Help,Permissions always broken, Why?
Any time I use disk utility since X .3 I get tons of permissions that need fixing. Even if I run it right after I have just run it.

Before installing the 10.4.4 update I ran Repair Permissions (and it actually found a few REAL errors to report--I had installed the latest greatest Flash whatsit the other day, which left behind some permissions errors) and again after the update. My, what an impressive set of advisories! What an amazingly clunky way to do this! I used to re-run it if it actually repaired anything. The returned list of "We are using special permissions..." is so dang humongous as to make it very difficult to see whether anything actually got repaired or not.
There is NO reason to run this every day. If you run it after you install something or if you are having a problem or before running a system update you will be fine.

I don't claim to be a 'tech expert' but my understandings seem to work for me. If I'm wrong, I'd be just as interested in other opinions as yourself, so FWIW;

The list you see doesn't mean that anything was wrong, just set to something other than what the original permissions called for. If there is a problem you will usually get a red listing indicating a failure of some sort. Although the value of arbitrarily repairing once a week if no OS/app installs or upgrades is questioned by many, the consenus opinion seems to be "it can't hurt".

As I understand it, you are doing the right thing. Some rather knowledgeable folks actually say this is the 'better' way because your version of the OS has most likely been updated to something newer than what's on the Install CD. IOW, you should Repair Disk Permissions based on the same OS version you are repairing.

There really isn't that much that needs to be done other than following the suggested 'proactive' approach pertaining to perm. repair, standard cache maintenance (if you run your system 24/7 it's automatic, or you can run the routines manually if your comfortable with Terminal. Otherwise, a utility like OnyX -free- is readily available.)
As long as you aren't constantly downloading, installing & removing every piece of junk you can get your mouse on you should be OK.
And as former PC Windows user - why is there no "Find
disk errors" type of app? Does Repair Permissions

Repair Perms doesn't, but the OS does a much better job than Windows, which needs such a utility because it creates the errors in the first place. Disk Utility does include a Repair Disk function which requires starting up from a different boot disk, but it doesn't need to be used as a matter of 'routine' maintenance.
In the event you do run into problems, these Discussions are one of the most invaluable resources available to you. Don't hesitate to ask & you'll get some excellent advice & guidance on any situation you may encounter. Just wait for considered responses before taking any response at face value.

After I remove the Block Diagram, The VI under RT target is always broken.
Why the VI is always broken under RT target if I remove their BD?
My LabVIEW Version is 2012 f1. I remerber that I have done a lot of remove in the last year and works well on RT. Really don't know why it's not work this time. Even for a very simple diagram...I removed it's BD and put it under a PXI Real-time target. It says:
"This VI has a bad connection to or cannot find a subVI or external routine but it has no block diagram to show or fix the error. You must find or correct the subVI or external routine. Check for more information in the Explain dialog box in Get Info." -

if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
A screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too,
etc.,

This is what's causing the crash, and it sounds related to PrintFab.
From googling, it looks like removing /library/printers/ppd plugins/printfabpde.plugin will get rid of the crash, but I don't know if that will make the driver unusable.

Repair permissions - always the same ones need repairing (Shockwave)
Each time I do a Repair Permissions after doing an installation (in this case Security 008 update for Intel on my MBP) the same permissions always are repaired and ONLY these. Here's the report I always get:
Permissions differ on ./Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Shockwave 10/Shockwave 10 Preferences, should be -rwxrwxr-x , they are -rw-rw-r--
Owner and group corrected on ./Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Shockwave 10/Shockwave 10 Preferences
Permissions corrected on ./Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Shockwave 10/Shockwave 10 Preferences
Does this seem logical? correct?
I know they are repaired since when I go to do the next installation and begin by Repairing Permissions, nothing needs repairing. Yet I know that after another installation the Shockwave permission differences will rear their heads again.
I do know tht Shockwave is an Adobe thing and I believe it is needed for Quicktime. Could there be something wrong with my Shockwave - or is this typical of Adobe products?

So, I have now updated the Security Update 008 on the G4 and guess what, the same Shockwave Repair permission issue. It DID NOT appear when I repaired permissions before and after the other updates (Java, QuickTime, Migration DVDCD..., etc) But Shockwave repairs did appear after Security 008.

...but, I don't know if this is my problem.
In any case, I just have to update iTunes (only on G4) and Safari (on all my Macs) and then I'm good to go - or at least good to go and figure out what is wrong with Shockwave!
Oh one more update to do - a casual remark I made in reply to another poster has led me to learn that I can update my Appleworks 6 and get it to work in X. Hurrah!

I use Help frequently, particularly with a new system but also with applications. In Leopard the Help window is always on top. Often I find myself in the position of wishing to keep the Help file available but have an application window come to the front to work in the app. While the window of said app will become active the Help window always floats on top. I find it very annoying.
Is there a preference to change that behavior? A hack?
thanksI too think this behavior is goofy in the extreme. You have the Help window open so you can work back and forth between Help and whatever you are doing: if the Help window is always on top you can't see what you are trying to do. What were they thinking? I was unable to find any way to fix this, although there might be such a way by modifying a plist somewhere and tell it to turn off always frontmost. Afraid I'm not enough of a hacker to know how one would go about this. Let's hope somewhere there is such a hacker who is annoyed enough to do it. You can't even hide the thing, it is always frontmost and will not hide, the best you can do is minimize it to the Dock. Sent feedback to Apple about this:

Why do permissions always need repair?
Whenever I go to disk utility and ask it to verify my computer's permissions, it always identifies a series of files where permissions need repair. Why is this?
