ERP means enterprise Resource Planning means planning the resources of an enterprise in an efficient way
there are so many erp packages like SAP, PEOPLESOFT, BAAN, JD EDWARDS, ORACLE APPLICATIONS etc
SAP is the ERP package which suits best for the COMPANY's to plan their resources efficiently and perfectly such that a 100 percent integration is achieved between the different departments (modules) of an organization. Beacuse of its best integration among the functional modules it became famous.

ABAper has to take care of the all technical developments involved in the project like by writing the bdc/lsmw's to upload the master data into sap, by writing the reports and desinging the custom transactions and writing the enhancements as and when required as per the business process.

SAP was started by 3 employees of IBM in WALDORF germany in late nintey's and became popular after 2000. initially people thought that it suits to only fortune 500 company's but after that it was implemented by so many middle comapny's and now a days , so many small scale company's also going for SAP.
HR module was not in SAP originally but afterwards it was included.
