How do i set up security again

For some reason my husband reset our lynsys modem and now our connection is non secure, how do I get it secure again

I put the following post in answer to another question, but since yours is about security as well, I will copy it here:
The single most important thing you can do to prevent unauthorized access to your network and data, is to properly secure your wireless network with WPA2 (or WPA if your equiptment does not support 2)  Do not use WEP as it is terribly insecure and can be trivially cracked.  The FBI cracked WEP in 3 minutes flat using the following:
Run Kismet to find your target network. Get the SSID and the channel.
Run Airodump and start capturing data.
With Aireplay, start replaying a packet on the target network. (You can find a 'good packet' by looking at the BSSID MAC on Kismet and comparing it to the captured packet's BSSID MAC).
Watch as Airodump goes crazy with new IVs. Thanks to Aireplay.
Stop Airodump when you have about 1,000 IVs.
Run Aircrack on the captured file.
You should see the WEP key infront of you now.
As you can see, this is not too terribly complicated and these tools are readily available (Please don't use this info to hack your neighbor's WEP network, I included the info simply to demonstrate how easy is is to break WEP)  Now the bad news, WPA/WPA2 has a vulnerability as well.  You do not want to use a short passphrase consisting of a word found in the dictionary.  This will leave you vulnerable to an offline dictionary attack  (A type of brute force attack where words found in the dictionary are thrown against a passprase to recover the passphrase) by someone using KisMac or coWPAtty.  (Two popular wireless hacking tools that are also freely available)  You will want to use a randomly generated complex passphrase consisting of at least 34 characters.  Most publications say 20 characters, but you get about 2.5n bits of security per character +12 bits (2.5n+12 total) in a passphrase .So, this would only give you 62 bits of equivelent security.  Bare minimum you want want 96 bits of equivelent security, so 34 characters will give you 97 bits.  Ideally you will want to use a 64 digit hexadecimal.   This will give you a full 256 bits of security, plus using a 64 digit hex avoids the hashing process used to create the 256 bit Pairwise Master Key, because the hex is used directly as the key.  It is this hashing process that leaves WPA/WPA2 vulnerable to a dictionary attack when short dictionary words are used as the passphrase.  Now the good news.  The brute force dictionary attack is the only known effective attack against WPA/WPA2.  if you use a 64 digit hex you will make your network reasonably secure against any sort of brute force attack in that each of the 2^256 possibilities must be tried since your passphrase can not be found in a dictionary.  This is a huge number
1.1579208923731619542357098500 869x10^77 or in decimal format:
1,157,920,892,373,161,954,235,709,850,086,900,000,000,00 0,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
Now the really good news.  to check each of the 2^256 possibilities, you would have to have a device that could crack a billion billion keys per second and it would still take you 3.671x10^51 years to check every possibility.  (3,671,743,063,080,802,746,815,416,825,491,118,336,290,905,145,409,708 years)  As you can plainly see this is significantly longer than the 3 minutes it took the FBI to hack WEP.  Now the best news of all.  The DES cracker Deep Crack (something your local wardriver is not likely to have) could only do 90 billion keys a second, and would take 4.0769221021355023274397357709461x10^58 years to exhaust all the possibilities. Newer devices can do 256 billion keys a second  These computing Goliaths would still take 1.4332929265320125369905321069732x10^58 years to exhaust the possibilities. The two most popular tools, KisMac and coWPAtty (something your local wardriver IS likely to have) can do 100 and 60 keys per second respectively.  Now, this can actually be subtantially increased to around 76,000 keys a second using precomputed hashes.  But, 76,000 still falls way short of even the DES cracker, and precomuted hashes in a dictionary attack are of no use if your SSID hash is not in the hash file, and your password is not in the dictionary file. But, for the sake of argument it would still take 4.8279340683183580193365292024362x10^64 years to run through all the possibilities.  In reality at 100 possibilities per second it would take 3.6692298919219520946957621938515x10^67 years to exhaust the possibilities.  So as you can see if you use a sufficiently complex and random passphrase, you can have a fairly secure network.  if you use something like:
toast
Thats exactly what you will be, and it will take anywere from 0.2 seconds to around 5 minutes to hack your network.  However, if you use something like:
DE9350EB9F96D947A962E5C9D71A6F5FC3DE5D006BF1340400050D30354AF49F
(a 64 digit hex)
Your would be hacker is going to be busy for quite some time try ing to hack your network.
If you don't have the means to generate these sort of passowrds, you can go to:
https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm
You'll want to get this on a  computer that is wired to your network.
Hope this helps.
P.S. if your equiptment does not support using a 64 digit hex, you can still use 63 character randomly generated passphrase like:
>66X>XC'kidz^7{u(,v}*C&-X\[|hl}?@O>Kc6w6>goGNB**wO"",0ADq]x*yUg
or
1ZuyAQP3yaqsoyJgBRu0XWidkTm2nWZj6iZVLcArL0C4zeKGyneEC7ZqmKRsyZ6
But be aware that this will only provide 169.5 bits of equivelent security.  So, this leaves only 1.0582402237152498756263674716231x10^51 possibilities to check.  At a billion billion keys per second, it will take your hacker only 33,533,609,137,426,479,695,108,863.5 (3.35336091374264796951088635x10^24 years to crack your passphrase by brute force.  By the way, the age of the universe is believed to be 15 billion years 1.5x10^10.  ;-)

  • How do you set a security password to control access to an external hard drive?

how do you set a security password to control access to an external hard drive?

The only way to reliably protect data, especially on an external hard drive, is to encrypt it.  Permissions don't have to be respected.  One way to encrypt data is to create an encrypted sparse bundle disk image with Disk Utility.  See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1578
(Be sure to use the 256-bit encryption.)
Alternately, you could use some whole-disk encryption, though I have no experience with any of the software for doing that.  You could try the following:

  • I lost the lan ethernet connection of an older windows 7 pc to my 3 Terabyte router when adding a new local printer to the pc. How do i set this up again so the PC is recognized and can get to the internet again through the time capsule?

I recently added a new printer to a 2005 vintage PC that is running windows 7. It used to go through a router in my wifes upstairs office to the time capsule by wired ethernet (cat5) but when I added her new local printer thought I would network it, big mistaked, lost all my ethernet connection and she cannot get to the internet. Wireless not an option. How do i set up again the ethernet connection and i will only USB the printer locally this time for the windows pc?
Tried windows diagnostics, and besides telling me to reset everything and turn router off and on etc. I am in an endless loop.
Other Mac products are not impacted by this issue.

I see no direct connection.. a printer and the computer setup for internet are not related.
But it sounds like the router in the wife's office is now in the wrong mode..
If you have an existing main router replace the second router for a switch .. that is the easy way.
Otherwise you need to bridge the router if it has that option.. most do not. Or use wan bypass.. where you turn off the dhcp server in the router and fix its ip to match the range of the main router.. this is the hassle of using router as a switch.
BUT I am making a huge number of assumptions.
What I need is the full network layout.. a quick picture would help.
I need main modem.. main router.. (maybe same box or different).. make model and current IP address and how dhcp is setup.
I need secondary router.. if that is what it is, IP and settings.
I want the printer type and model. How it is connected.
BTW I much prefer to see a network printer plugged into the network rather than usb.. it is only a matter of sorting the IP settings and driver pointing to the network rather than local.
Or you should think of it as a broken washing machine and call the technician.. who could fix the whole lot in an hour.

ast computer i was able to make 3 profiles and run 3 windows. each time it asked for the profile when i wanted to start each window. how can i set that up again

last time some1 set it up for me. i would only have 1 shortcut on my desktop. everytime i clicked on it, it would ask me which profile i wanted. even if i had 1 or 2 of the others open it would still ask me which profile i wanted to open. i want to be able to do it that way again.
yes i already set up the 3 profiles. but once i open up the one profile, and click on the short cut to open another, it just opens a brwser window with the profile in use. so i could open 10 windows, its only 1 profile, the first profile i used.
and yes i have the box not checked

  • Completely lost Time capsule in Mavericks. How do I set it up again?

I haven't been able to do a Time Machine back-up since installing Mavericks. I've tried to troubleshoot using various solutions and just made it worse.
Using the airport utitlity I tried to update and eventually ended up deleting it completely.
Now I only have internet through my airport base station.
I need to reinstall/configure my time capsule and then figure out how to get my time machine back-ups going.
I did copy my documents to an externam harddrive but not the entire harddrive.
So how do I get my time capsule back through the airport utility and get Time Machine working again?
So far, so not impressed with Mavericks. Sorry I upgraded but now no choice in going back.

    Now it's worse.
My airport is gone. I can only access the internet through an ethernet cable directly to my cable modem.
Airport says there is no configured time capsule available. I've tried connecting the time capsule to the laptop using an ethernet cable as I did for my first backup way back when and it still says there is nothing out there. Naturally it also says there is no wireless network available either.
This ****** me off. My Time Capsule was green and working perfectly except that it wouldn't back up. Now I've not only lost the ability to back up but I've lost my wireless network too.
Will a Mavericks update fix this?
Have I totally screwed my time capsule? Will I have to buy a new one even though my old one was working perfectly BEFORE the Mavericks install?
If I dump Mavericks and reinstall a previous operating system, do I have a chance of getting my Time Capsule back?

  • How can I set up a back up hard drive on airport extreme

I have an external harddrive that was plugged into my airport extreme. Apple seemed to eliminate my abilty to back up wirelessly in one of the updates. How can I set this up again? Does anyone know a way around this?
    Thanks,

Ah, I remember those links now.  I was thinking something along the lines of:
Never consider any computer a data storage device, rather a data creation ,sending, and manipulation device. Anyone who thinks data is safe on any computer, even copied upon multiple partitions is making a mistake.
Never backup your data exclusively upon magnetic hard drives or flash storage, nor consider same since magnetic storage degrades over time even under ideal conditions.
Store important data on multiple servers on multiple continents.
Burn important data onto multiple copies of archival DVDs and store same in cool dark fireproof safes, multiple places.
Don’t burn data onto junk DVD’s purchased from consumer level electronics stores. These are not archival long life DVD’s nor reliable, nor trustworthy. Archival DVD blanks such as Taiyo Yuden, rated for 100+ years are what the pros use, these are made by JVC and are professional grade DVD blanks.
Most people have never heard of archival DVDs, however their cost is only 30% more than junk-level DVD blanks which are only rated for 5-10 years. Also the reject rate on the inferior DVD is around 15%, the cost is almost identical between the WORST DVD blanks and the BEST DVD blanks.
Most importantly know that 2 copies of your data is 1, and 1 is none, and 1000 copies stored in one place or building, is also the same as none due to possible fire.
Always consider and expect your computer’s hard drive to completely crash anytime, at all times, and you should keep a cloned and updated hard drive handy at all times to return to immediate productivity and utterly avoid programs and parameter reinstallation.  Nothing is quicker than taking out a dead HD and tossing in a new updated cloned HD for getting back to 100% in under 20 mins!
    Decentralized Omnipresent Data (D.O.D.)
(something I coined an age ago)
    Backing up data to:
    Multiple HD in multiple locations
On multiple servers on multiple continents, private and public websites, anonymous data farms. (very easy actually)
Burned onto archival optical and magnetic storage
Have unclassified data possessed by multiple people in multiples places.
When your data becomes both everywhere and nowhere, accessible to all, destructible by none, cannot be collected together or permanently retrieved under any circumstances, you have Decentralized Omnipresent Data (D.O.D.) protection rivaling that of large governments.

    Hello Shane32784,
I'm not sure what security you are referring to changing.
The Digital Copies usually have a code that you have to enter somewhere in order to access, some digital copies work within iTunes, some within Flixster, depends on the production company. You should check the documentation that came with the disc. It should tell you how to download the digital copy.
