How much is to much?

I recently experienced an issue with my Thunderbolt display or more accurately daisy chaining my Thunderbolt display. I have a 15 inch MacBook Pro and 2 Thunderbolt displays powered through the daisy chain. This set up has worked fine for about a year. Then recently the display at the end of the daisy chain stopped working. When I tried plugging it in straight to the MacBook it worked fine as did the other display, which lead me to believe there was an issue with the daisy chain or maybe the graphics card in the Macbook Pro.
I contacted Apple support and spoke to a Senior Advisor called Jake who took me through a series of tests across a whole week. The result of this did not lead to any conclusions. Except one of the so called Apple experts coming back to Jake to inform him that you can’t daisy chain a 15 inch MacBook Pro.  I informed Jake that it had previously worked for about a year, that the sales guy in the Apple shop told me that it would work, that the Apple website said it would work and that the only reason I bought 2 displays was indeed because I was assured that it would work.
After another week of back and forth Jake told me to take my MacBook pro to a service center and that they would fix it. I did. They wanted to change the motherboard, not sure why they thought this would fix the problem but I’m not the expert so I said sure. Surprise, surprise changing the motherboard did nothing to fix the problem and just added another week to the problem not being fixed.  3 weeks on, I get back on the phone with Jake at Apple and tell him about the issue. Jakes runs me through the same test he already ran me through with the same results. 4 weeks on and getting a little frustrated I ask Jake if he can’t just get someone down here with their own 15 inch MacBook Pro to test it and fix it on site. Finally after 4 days of internal Apple negotiations they agree to send someone down. After missing the appointment 2 times Micro2000 in Singapore finally managed to get someone to me. The guy arrives with his 13 inch MacBook pro, a MacBook known not to have the ability to power a daisy chain, none the less he insisted on wasting my time and trying it. One hour later he concluded that it wouldn’t work with a 13 inch MacBook Pro and left. I quipped that I now understood why Micro 2000 has so much trouble getting to meetings on time or at all.
At this stage, we are now 2 months into trying to get this issue resolved. 3 times I was told it could not get fixed. 3 times I directed Apple specialists to their own website to assure them that it could and did in fact work. There are even videos in Youtube I told them. Finally Apple decide that it might be a good time to pick up my Thunderbolt displays and MacBook and take it in for testing and repair. I said sure. Micro 2000 (oh noooo…) came and picked up my products, I singed a form and they were off.
2 days later I get a call from Micro 2000 informing me that they have had lengthy discussions with Apple about my problem and that Apple concluded that you cannot daisy chain a 15 inch MacBook Pro with 2 thunderbolt displays. “Funny that” I replied and rattled off my by now well rehearsed and memorized answer to the “this won’t work” statement throwing in a few technical words for good measure.
2 months and 3 weeks in, I phone Apple to do Micro 2000’s job for them. I speak to Michael Perks, who in the typical very well trained manner tells me that he agrees with the ridiculousness of the situation and that he will now take personal charge to fix it. “Trust me this will get resolved even if I have to buy you a new MacBook Pro and hand deliver it” (maybe not that but its not far off). “I will call you back the day after tomorrow as tomorrow is my day off” I was assured.
The day came and went. I tried to call and sent 2 emails. The weekend came and went. I called again. Monday, Tuesday came and went. I Gave up and called the standard hotline. I was greeted by another chirpy chap in the usual perky what is your first name I’m your buddy manner. “Oh this is terrible, let me get a senior advisor for you” I wait 20 minutes and finally get put through to Rajeev Anand who assured me that he is now the main man (so it was never Jake and not Michael but finally the main man) and he will come to my rescue. I am to expect a call back in 2 hours but really I am expecting that I will have to call back day after day to be given the same smarmy customer service lines, empty promises and of course the standard this will not work answer.
It has now been 3 months since my Apple products stopped working. It has been 3 weeks that I have been without my Products and I have gotten no closer to a solution than I was at day 1.
I was once the biggest Apple fan. I have the IPhone (all versions except 5, IPad, a MacBook Air, Time capsule, MacBook Pro and 2 thunderbolt displays. I even have Apple TV, the old version and the new version. I got my wife hooked on Apple and we use Apple in my company. Recently Apple brought out a mediocre product in the IPhone 5, copied Samsung with the IPad mini and has gone from a company that leads in innovation to a company that follows in innovation and I fear that the straw that broke the camels back will be that they don’t know what their products can or can not do and that they can’t back up their intuitive and slick IU/UX with an intuitive and slick after sales service. Of course, Apple won’t care about losing me as a customer, they have millions more but I wonder if this is not an isolated case and ask you is this the beginning of the end at the top for Apple? For me…, I think it is…
Now…, can some please help me fix my MacBook / Displays?

The length of your post is to much. Try a rant in 25 words or less.

  • How Much is Too Much?

    Hi everyone,
I have recently been using my macpro more and more for high-def video work. I usually leave it on 24 hours a day as at night I set up a batch of files in compressor to run over night. Essentially, all my CPUs are maxed almost all the time. I am wondering if this could become a problem? I have read a little about average loads but don't fully understand what they mean. Mine are: 8.60, 7.58 and 7.42 and I am getting pretty high temps on my CPUs, power supplies and hard drives (about 44C, 54C and 39C average respectively). Am I pushing this thing too hard? How much is too much? Please see my system specs below.
    Thanks a lot!
    ~ Philip

Don't let the drives get to 70C! they can take 50C safely. Memory and graphics are more of a concern. The cpu will protect itself.
smcFanControl can insure that your fans stay above the default minimums, which is worth taking a look at (freeware).
Fluctuation in temps between extremes can stress a hard drive and memory.

  • I have created a book  in Photo Essay that is extra large (10 by 13") and I just realized that I want a 8 1/2"by 11" book.  Can I transfer all the pages to the smaller sized book.  If so, how?  Thanks so much for your help.

I have created an extra large (10"-13") Photo Essay style iBook in Aperture and just realized that all my other iBooks are 8.5"-11".  How can I transfer all the formatted pages to the smaller book size without having to start over?  Thanks so much for your help.
    Apple Phan

    Apple Phan,
that will require some extra work. If you change the book size, some of your edits will probably be lost, because texts and photos that will not fit the smaller layout will be removed. The best you can do will be to save your current book, so you can compare. Try the following:
Create a PDF preview of  the current version of the book and save the PDF, see:  iPhoto, Aperture: Previewing an order in iPhoto or Aperture
Duplicate the book: File > Duplicate
Then change the Book Sizeof the copy  (from the Theme Button) and compare, what is missing, hopefully not to much.

  • How much is too much to wait for the computer to work

I need some help and ideas on this one since I am about to throw out every Apple product I have out the window.
Let me try and keep it short:
got my iMac end of June
    it crashes mid September
took it to authorized service, told it will be fixed in two days, took them 35 days
since I got it back it was always crashing and not working properly even though they said they replaced the hard drive and logic board and that that was the original problem with it
about 20 days later when I saw there are too many problems with it to me something minor (internal mic never worked since I got it back from service, crashing all the time, iMovies won't open because of some mess in iPhoto library, etc)
Apple sent on site repair, the guy replaced 7 parts in the computer!
7-10 days later, the computer shuts down in the middle of the movie and won't turn back on.
Before sending on site repair guy, the senior adviser told me that if the repair doesn't get my computer to stay working, I will get my computer replaced. After the computer died this last time, I called him and can not get him to call me back. I actually called him twice this week, in his work hours and didn't get a call back. So I guess all their "I am so sorry for the inconvenience, we will get to the bottom of this and get your computer working or replace it" is just bs they tell you to get you off the phone??
Now the new senior ad. says I will get replacement if this repair doesn't work. Also was told I will get a call back from repair service in 24 hrs, which didn't happen. So here we go again! I even called the very first sen. ad. I got the number from - yes, you can guess, never heard back from her either.
I have a list of 4 or 5 senior advisers that all tell me to call them if something we agreed on doesn't work, but I never can get to them nor do I get call backs.
So out of the 5+ months I had the computer so far, it worked as much as it was broken. Now with holidays coming, who knows how long will I have to wait.
This is really frustrating, to be told they will fix it or replace it yet I keep having to deal with not having a working computer.
Is there anyone that is above the people that keep giving me their numbers without actually following up that I can contact and find out when can I get a working computer that doesn't have parts breaking down every week!!?!??!??!?

It's been almost more than a month since nokia released it,,, and it was supposed to be a worlwide release on oct 24th,,,, i don't feel like waiting for christmas nokia,,,,, we want the symbian belle preferably before the end of november at least..
Belle firstly has not been released.
secondly Belle will not be released for existing symbian ^3 or symbian anna phones till after the whole world has Anna, to which Canada and Australia and some other places still do not have.
And lastly Nokia do not do world wide releases, they are released based on carrier approval.
So when it is released it will be given to the carriers first for testing then once approved it will then be released to the public. If it is not approved due to errors it will be taken back and fixed, then resubmitted for testing and so on until it is approved. However if the carrier just says no they dont want it released, then Nokia will not release it at all to any customers that are on that carrier.
So just like Anna, you will have to wait till it is ready and testing has been completed and the carriers give the approval.
Skyee has confirmed that Belle will not be released until after the Anna roll out is completed.
    Please be patient

  • How much is too much music on itunes?

im uploading a lot of music onto my itunes, for two different ipods, and i dont know if i put too much music on if there will be a lag or anything
can someone please tell me how much music a computer can take before significantly slowing down?

As long as there's at least 1GB of space free on the hard disk at all times and the iTunes library isn't stored on the Finder's desktop, you shouldn't experience a major slowdown regardless of how big the iTunes library gets.

  • Neo4-How much is too much?

    I have a k8n neo4,athlon64 3500+ clawhammer,2x512 corsair VS pc3200.
I have been reading about oc'ing for a while. Finally got the nerve to try.
I am currently at 230MHz FSB without a hitch.I did set the HTT to 4x to avoid the 1100MHz cap mentioned.
    CPU temps are still 38C-40C.
Am I shortening the life span of my components by doing this?
What FSB will the corsair value select ram start to crap out?
    Thanks
    BTW this thing is flying

oc does shorten lifespan of components. howmuch is anybody's guess but i read somewhere that it could take off upto 5 years.
as for ur ram, the only way is to oc ur ram and see how far it goes. the easiest way to do this is to drop the cpu multiplier to something like 6, raise fsb and probably vmem as well.

  • Managing projects or how much is too much? 40Gb+ library and growing

Hi all Aperture users. First let me tell that I'm quite happy with 1.0, 1.5 and new 2.0 versions.
One question still bugs me. How big Aperture library can be, is there a limit. My library now is 40Gb, I've started using referenced images when it was 10, but with every time I plug my card in, and import images to my Library, it becomes bigger and bigger.
Backing up those files is not a big issue. My referenced files have 4 copies (2 copies on DVDs, one in DMG file on computer and DMG file backed up with Time Machine). Same goes to my Library, Time Machine takes care of that, and every now and then I open Aperture.library package and manually drag and burn those projects and folders.
    Here's a question:
With library file constantly growing, is there a limit on the size or is it just the size of my HD? Every time I add Gbs to my library, I notice Aperture performance decreases. What is the size of you Aperture library?
And the main thing is, would Apple ever consider changing Vaulting feature in Aperture so you 'extract' project or folder of projects completely out of the library, back it up somewhere and load it back when you need it without replacing whole library? There is a way of doing it manually, Show Package Contents, remove folders, project files, burn them and rebuild library next time Aperture loads. But it's not really 'Apple way', it's not cool nor pretty.
    What's your take on this?

"if it sounds good it is good"
I do not disagree with what has been said but personally I do not use this above statement as the "final say" in my work. By definition it is only as true as your monitoring - and your ears! Your ears can get tired and mislead you. What sounds great in the studio can be a nasty surprise elsewhere (or just the following morning!). You obviously cannot eq anything without listening and your ears obviously lead what you do with a mix.
All I'm saying is that as you get experienced you will also do what seems right to your head as well as to your ears. If I have to eq a vocal by 15dB I know it will likely sound "eq'd" and unnatural. That might be what I want. that might be what "sounds good" but if I'm trying to achieve a natural sound I might wonder why I need to apply such gain and consider alternative solutions.
I think the fact you have asked this question demonstrates you are on the right lines with how you are working. I'm an advocate of cautious eq. never twiddle knobs (virtual or otherwise) randomly until "it sounds good". Sit back, listen, think about what you need to do and then try it.
Don't forget about cutting as well as boosting. Indeed most folk find that reducing frequency bands rather than boosting tends towards a more natural result - so if you want something to have more "middle" pull back the "top" and "bottom".
If I'm struggling with a mix it is nearly always due to bad or excessive eq. It is rarely the other way round.

  • Wrap in bubblewrap if you ever need to use "Warranty" (or how Apple make so much money)

    I have ipad 2 - 9/10 months old - probably my 10th apple product from the ipod/iphone/ipad range.  The £700 64G with 3G model.
It has developed the "common" (design fault?!) microphone problem where all it records now is crackles.
Sent off for repair under warranty.
But guess what there is some cosmetic damage to the dock connector.....oh by the way no it has no affect on the performance when i dock it with anything and you may be asking what has that got to do with the broken microphone.......the answer is nothing however it does allow apple to ensure that they never have to fix anything that is broken (especially when its something that clearly is breaking down left right and centre).
ha ha and they want £280 from me to fix their broken microphone because CLEARLY I DID NOT READ THE PART THAT SAID NO WEAR AND TEAR OF ANY KIND WILL BE TOLERATED IF SOMETHING YOU PAID A LOT OF MONEY FOR EVER BREAKS DOWN.  SO MY RECOMMENDATION TO EVERYONE ELSE IS BUY AN IPAD, NEVER USE IT, PUT IT IN BUBBLEWRAP SO THAT WHEN IT BREAKS DOWN WITHIN 12 MONTHS THERE IS NO CHANCE THAT IT COULD BE ANY WAY COSMETICALLY DAMAGED SO THAT THEY DONT FIX THE PROBLEM.
THIS HAS BEEN THE WORSE (AND IT TAKES SOME BEATING) CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE I HAD EVER HAD IN MY LIFE.
My husband was considering an Ipad 3 - no longer.
I work for a large financial services organisation currently piloting ipads for business use....suppose they will find this interesting to know as well.
I reckon the customer service people must hear it all the time because they dont give a s**t at all.
Anyone recommend an external microphone as there is no way on earth I will be putting any more money in Apple's direction if this is how they treat customers?

To get to the second question, I use the Vericorder Mini-Mic and am very happy with it so far.
To answer the second question, I've taken in iOS devices (two phones) with "cosmetic" damage (scuffs, etc) and have not had any problem getting service. I've found their customer service to be excellent.
I see you're upset - but ALL CAPS is considered to be yelling/screaming in online discussions, and doing so makes it less likely you'll get any support.

You should be able to run many maps in parallel, depending on the resources of your system. Not quite sure what you mean with recycle.

  • How much is too much heat?

I just got my Macbook last week and have seen the issues with the operating temps. I installed the CoreDuoTemp utility today and have noticed that my notebook is running around 122 degrees (F) while it is in use. Slighly lower when it is sitting idle. This is on a flat desk surface. I dont really hear my fan running at any time either. Should I be concerned with this level of heat or isit somewhat normal.?

I've heard these new MacBooks are getting pretty hot, though I don't know how normal that is. I used a Powerbook G4 titanium for years and it got pretty hot as well... don't know if the new MacBook's get just as hot or hotter since I haven't used one. On another note, seem even PC laptops get hot as well though, my ex had a Compaq laptop and that thing got hot enough to cook an egg on underneath. Sooo... I think for the most part, this scenerio is normal, especially with laptops...
And "ovenbook" ... like that term!

Connect phone to laptop, AutoPlay Box appears, click open Device to view files, internal storage, DCIM, Drag all Pictures/Videos into folder on desktop. Message pops up within a few seconds, Saying  'A Device Attached To The System Is Not Functioning.'
    Can any be of assistance?
    Many Thanks.

Is the computer in question connected to the Internet, and if so, is the Internet connection working correctly?
It is possible that Adobe Reader tries to check for updates when it is launched, then finds a faulty network connection.
Check the Device Manager for non-functioning network devices.
Also try http://fixitcenter.support.microsoft.com/ to find other potential problems on that system.
