How to troubleshoot intermittent Internet Issue at a primary school

I would change the password on your wireless and only hand it out to staff that need it or as they ask for it one by one.  That gives you a way to see what is connecting to your network and when it goes down you have a small number of staff that you know have the password.  I would be suspicious also of a AP possibly being set in a bridge mode and is causing a loop in your system.  The DNS could also be a cell phone or cellular enabled laptop/tablet that is sharing it's connection and causing a problem with your system.

I have been struggling for three or four weeks trying to resolve this issue. I am now of the opinion that there are two different issues here each contributing to the problem. To give you a breakdown. The school has two servers, one internet caching/filtering/proxy server, 20 computers, 45 laptops (most wired in, not wireless) and a dozen ipads.About three weeks ago I received reports that the Internet was very slow and timing out frequently. After spending some time troubleshooting the issue, I decided to shut down the children's computers (unplug from network), the wireless access points and the shared area computers. I only had one switch running as I connected everything to that switch.
I left it for about three days - everything seemed to work. So I added the kids computers. Internet continued to work without any issues, but we...

  • Intermittent Internet Issues

My internet (Uverse) has been really hit and miss in the last few weeks.  When I went to Troubleshoot & Resolve, it said "service issue detected", then the message  "We were not able to verify the connection to your U-verse Wi-Fi Gateway."  I have a NVG6510 modem and the wi-fi setup light is not on at all.  I can usually get internet on the computer connected directly to the modem but not on devices attached through the wi-fi.  When it goes off, I usually have to reboot the modem to regain service.

Hey there.  you're line readings are immaculate, so I wouldn't imagine that there is any physical line trouble, or anything wrong with the phones or filters that would interfere with your connection.    Intermittent problems are super hard to diagnose, so the more info the better.
Are you ethernet cable or Wireless on your pc
does the problem happen at night more or pretty much anytime,
how long does it stay down whne it's broken, and what are you doing to get it fixed (i.e. rebooting router etc...)
and what state are you in.

  • Exchange 2010 - how to troubleshoot intermittent Outlook slowness

I'm having users report intermittent Outlook slowness 2007.  I can't repeat the issue exactly but I have seen it -- you get a message that says "Outlook is trying to retrieve data from <Exchange Server>" and it takes it a noticeable
amount of time.  One of the difficulties in troubleshooting this is that I haven't seen it on my own machine, nor can I find the way to replicate the issue consistantly.
We actually just upgraded from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 and never had these issues in the past.   I've run a process monitor on the server (which is about 8 times better than our old Exchange 2003 server - 2 quad-core procs and 12 GB of
RAM for about 250 mailboxes) and find nothing abnormal in terms of CPU time or network bandwidth usage (4 teamed 1 GB/s connections).  I have also monitored several of the Exchange RPC items, and Client: RPCs but Client:RPCs does not return anything
at all (just 0 the whole time).   Are there other things I should be looking at with PerfMon?
I'm at a point where I'm not sure where to take my troubleshooting.  Does anyone have any ideas?  The fact that I (and most other users I've asked) never experience the issue leads me to believe that it might have something to do with a
local computer issue rather than a server issue, but I'm hearing reports from people with both Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010.  The other somewhat common thread is that
Outlook is NOT running in cached exchange mode, but it wasn't when we were on the 2003 server either and we did not have this issue.   Our Exchange 2010 Server is now running the new UM role, however, and we were using Cisco Unity before.
I have already disabled all Outlook add-ins and disabled anti-virus (client, but not Nod32 for Exchange).
Thanks, any ideas would be appreciated.

Forgot you're using 2010, the item counts are much more laxed, 100,000 per folder compared to 5000 in Exchange 2007. For your Outlook 2007 clients, can you confirm you're up to date on the last post hotfixes as of Feb 2011? Also I would disable caching
of shared calendars in outlook. Also note that outlook 2010 caches all shared mailboxes by default.
Turn off calendar caching. If you have Exchange in use then Outlook 2007 may well have the caching of people’s calendars turned on. This means that when you open a calendar you have to wait for the cache to populate, which can slow
things down a bit sometimes. To do this:
Go to the Tools Menu and select Account Settings
Select your Exchange Account and press the change button
    Press the more settings button
    Select the 2nd tab (Advanced)
Un-tick the “Download shared folders” option. Note that this will stop cached Sharepoint folders from downloading into Outlook as well.
Press OK until all options are saved.

  • How to troubleshoot JVM performance issues

We recently had a performance issue with our application running on Java 1.4.2 on Windows where the CPU utilization was extremely high. Using the +PrintClassHistogram option I was able to determine that a char array was utilizing more than 500 megabytes of memory.
My question is, is there another option I can include or process I can follow that would help me determine which object was creating this array?
I am not a Java programmer so I apologize if this is elementary question or if I posted this in the wrong forum. I am the SA they call when the application is not running correctly. I have been reading this forum and the manuals trying to find something that would assist me. The developers will fix the problem after I pinpoint where the problem is.
We do not have any type of JVM profiler so I am trying to troubleshoot this issue with thread dumps and JVM options. My assumption is that if a profiler can retrieve the information I should be able to. Is this a correct assumption?
Lastly, if we were to purchase a profiler does anyone have a recommendation on which one to use? Our latest version of the application utilizes Java 5 so we would need something that would work with both versions of Java if possible.
Any assistance or recommendations anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

This is a management problem. If you have a performance problem then you should be calling the developers and telling them to figure it out and that they need to fix it. You certainly shouldn't be looking at code or profilers.
Unless you have plenty of time on your hands and your goal is to become a developer.
    But regardless...
Buying a profiler is an option but if you go that route then to figure out a solution you will be a java programmer even if that isn't your title.
You should however figure out how to simulate load on the server, even with a profiler. There are tools that allow you to send things like http requests, web service requests, etc. Simulating load is a good idea even without a profiler. It allows you to estimate future system needs dependent upon future company growth.
Note that profiling really slows down an application so an app that can handle 10 requests a second might only be able to do 1 a second or less while being profiled.

  • How to troubleshoot sharepoint with Issues when connecting to SSIS

I am trying to insert into a sharepoint list with SSIS and am getting an error which is to vague. I am trying to troubleshoot but just don't know enough about sharepoint. I have looked at the log files but there isn't anything there.
There are also a tonne of options under logging configuration....how would I trouble shoot permission errors, updating/inserting errors through logs or see what messages the connections are generating?
From SSIS side all I see is:
[SharePoint List Destination] Error: Error on row ID="1": 0x80070005 - Unspecified Error - Check SharePoint Server Logs if possible.

component returned an error from the ProcessInput method. The error is specific to the component, but the error is fatal and will cause the Data Flow task to stop running.  There may be error messages posted before this with more information about the
    failure.
Any direction would be very very appreciated.

    Hi Caseypruden,
I think you are using the SharePoint List Destination adapter downloaded from CodePlex, right? From the following links, you should be able to see permissions related error in the SharePoint Log file:

If you are running the package in BIDS/SSDT, make sure the current Windows user has sufficient permission the SharePoint site to edit the SharePoint list. If you are running the package as a SQL Server Agent Job, make sure the SQL Server Agent Service Account
or the proxy account has the corresponding permission on the SharePoint site.

  • How to troubleshoot intermittent connection drops on Apple LAN (TimeCapsule   AirPorts)

Hi all, I have built out a wireless network for an office space. The network consists of a TimeCapsule acting as a router w/ dhcp and 3 Apple AirPorts acting as access points to the TC. I have gotten reports from users that there has been random connection drops (symptom: wireless internet stops working breaking AirPlay, etc.). Is there a way to review router logs to see what happened? Are there any proactive tools I can install to monitor connection drops?
I have Logmein Central and can make one of the computers a Logmein Pro client but the alerting on that is very weak, looking for something more. Please help!

You do not have the same problem. It is always possible to restore a backup made with a previous OS to the most recent OS. If you are having a problem restoring a backup from an older version the problem is not related to the fact that you have 8.3 on your device.

  • Intermittent connectivity issues

So I had a Motorola SB 6120 modem working for over 4 years with Comcast and all of the sudden I start getting intermittent connectivity issues at night (it could be during the day as well, but I am actively working and doing school work at night). The issue comes and goes. I call Comcast and they swear up and down its my modem - which I dont believe since Im the connectivity issues are not fixed by resseting it, just waiting it out. I go ahead and get a new modem (SB6141) and router - spending over $200 and guess what - still having the identical issue. I call in and the support person states that as far as the modem goes everything is fine but the signal is dropping (same issue, two different conclusions after a good amount of arguing on my end and $200 I wont see back). So I tech comes back but I have to be at work and leave my wife and brother in law at home to make sure he comes by. When I get home apparently the tech had stated that "the modem was not correctly registered". That means that my other modem wasnt? And that an uncorrectly registered modem works from time to time? ... Really? So I try to do a live chat since again, I have to work and cant waste my entire day waititing for comcast to fess up and admit their service is the issue. • 10.3.9 Internet issues

    Hi All
i have been trawling through the fourms and still cannot find a solution to my iMac internet issues. I have done a complete format and reinstall of Mac OS X 10.3.9 (to be fair i downloaded update on another computer and instelled via USB stick) everything works great can import into firewire from camcorder etc. Airport card can see the wireless connection but when i enter the password it states there is a problem and connot connect. I have tried everying (to what i can understand anyway) and teh main reason for a clean install was to get rid of any possible conflicts that may have been there.
everything else can use the internet including my MacBook (intel) fine. Some one did suggest once that DNS settings were not correct which to be honest i did not userstand how to alter them, plus if eberying else was ok why just this iMac playing up.
Please can you assist just want to this to connect so my son can upload his filming to pleople for his re school assignments.
    thank you in advance
    Peter

    Oops!
Could you specify what iMac you have, the specs of the system & computer,
as that may help research or find workable ideas for you to try. This would
help in troubleshooting, or in discovering Support articles to link you to in
    the course of a discussion.
I just re-read your post and had thought it was for a later
mac + OS X that would not run in PowerPC vintage!
(The mention of MacBook threw me off, as did a recent newer
OS X upgrade that may run -- in that newer hardware 10.9.3)
    So you've upgraded a PowerPC iMacG4 to Leopard 10.3.9
and the internet doesn't work? The wireless router may be
using a different security protcol than the old Airport Card
can support; you may have to test the unit via Ethernet to
be sure the computer itself is fully updated. It may go to
Apple servers to look for Software Updates.
The settings for the wireless security may be incorrect,
since later WPA2, won't apply to vintage AirPort card.
With a later OS X such as Tiger 10.4(.11) the odds do
improve for connectivity to the internet.
The DNS settings should not be an issue if you can use the
internet with a recent version computer and later OS X.
Not sure how to help, except to try as a test, to run without
the security you'd really want with the wi-fi (WPA2, etc)
turned on, to see if the old iMac can then use it.
Another issue would be the lack of correct frequency; a
newer Wi-Fi system may not be set to be backward
compatible to 802.11a/b, newer ones use 802.11/b/g/n/+
You may check to see if the router has a setting to allow
use of lower or older spec connection.

  • How to Troubleshoot iTunes 10.6 Download Failure in Firefox 14.0.1 ??

How to Troubleshoot iTunes 10.6 Download Failure in Firefox 14.0.1 ??
    posted Thursday, 02 August 2012 at 07:43AM PDT, by Matthew B. | @QHereKidSF
    SIMPLY-PUT !!
I am desperate to know of any possible workaround solutions that might resolve inexplicable failure(s) to download iTunes 10.6 (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/) in Mozilla Firefox 14.0.1 Browser for Windows 7 (64-bit) OS...!!
    FURTHER DETAILED !!
In an aimlessly ill-informed effort to troubleshoot the "Please install Apple Application Support" ERROR Message reported subsequent to my numerous attempts to "repair/install" the most recent and otherwise previously up-to-date versions of Apple QuickTime & iTunes on my HP Pavilion dv4 Entertainment Notebook PC, running on the Windows 7 (64-bit) OS... I mistakenly (perhaps?) thought it wise to attempt to execute a complete uninstall/reinstall of both QuickTime & iTunes. Oops... YIKES !!
Somewhere along the knotty entangled threads of my most circuitous web-research, as I browsed for information and instructional resources regarding proper procedure for (re)-installing Apple Application Support (amongst other peripheral software programs provided by Apple, Inc. as integral technical components essential to seamless & successful installation, application and operation of the most current/up-to-date versions of Apple QuickTime & Apple iTunes), I seem to recall reading explicit suggestions from well-rated community support contributors to proceed with the aforementioned course of action...
Unfortunately, now that I no longer have either Apple QuickTime or iTunes currently installed on my Win7OS HP Pavilion Notebook PC, I continue consistently to fail at initializing either a functional download or installation solely of iTunes 10.6 -- so far!!
When I link to the Apple iTunes 10.6 Download URL (listed herein, above!) and click the (blue) DOWNLOAD NOW Button located near mid-center of the left-sidebar in the presumably appropriate/correct browser tab window (fully framed and immediately visible in maximized view, on my screen), what seems then to occur is pretty much what one could only image/explain &/or describe as "zip/zilch, nothing/nada, absolute silence, stillness: a blatantly obvious failure to initiate functional download of anything at all, whatsoever...!!"
Not a single hint of code or even a mere bleep/beep/blink/blip in my Win7OS or HP Pavilion Monitor Display appears before for me; ultimately, suggesting without any real certainty whatsoever that a download of the iTunes 10.6 Software Installation Package has perhaps initialized, successfully...!!?
WHAT TO DO? What to do? ...ARGGHHH !!
I am desperate to find a workaround solution with which to troubleshoot and ideally resolve these persistent difficulties I continue to encounter when attempting to download iTunes 10.6 via Mozilla Firefox 14.0.1 on the Win7OS (64-bit) of my HP Pavilion dv4 Entertainment Notebook PC!!
Might there possibly be anyone -- anyone, at all!! -- out there, somewhere amidst the knotty entangled nets broadly cast far'cross the endlessly great and expansive waves of this worldwide cyberspace we share, who perhaps would know of a proper workaround fix with which I might troubleshoot my current web-computing technology crisis??
If indeed so, please do come diving face-first forward toward me... with any decent amount of valuably trustworthy information, instruction, advice, guidance, support or even encouragement that you might be readily willing and able to provide!! Please, please...!!?
Any worthwhile, effective assistance that's provided to me (in as short an order as possible) would be most sincerely appreciated & acknowledged widely across the web by me... with resounding cries of humble recognition, admiration, and deeply indebted gratitude!! At least, that's only as much as I can so far surmise to guarantee, at this point -- thus far and so moving forward!!
Yes, indeed...!! That's a promise which I intend to keep; should all issues be resolved well much for and in my favor, as well as much, much sooner rather than far-too much later -- hopefully, even by the end of the coming day; one might say... *sigh* Hehe. WINK/GRIN...
Boy o'boy, now... That sure would delight me to the nth-infinite degree, indeed! "As heck a'heaven-high: FOR SURE!!" I dare say...
