How to use MacPro SATA ports 5&6 in Vista

Just spent 2 days figuring this out, so in case someone else is banging their head here's the fix.
To get Vista to enable all the SATA ports on a new MacPro ( so you can add eSATA or extra drives ) you need to force vista to use the "Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller" instead of the "Intel 631xESB/6321ESB...-2680" driver.
Additionally you need to follow the instructions at Enable AHCI booting in Vista after installation.
Ignore the other posts about using Grub, and hacking the firmware, booting Linux and other kinds of crazy. The intel chipset supports AHCI if you force it to use the right driver.
Once finished you need to restart your mac and you should now see 3 x "Intel 631xESB/6321ESB...-269E" adapters, and ATA Channels 0-5, after windows redetects everything.
You may need to download the latest (8.2.x.x) drivers from Intel to get the best results, but it should work with the latest Bootcamp drivers once you force the correct AHCI driver.
You still probably won't be able to get Vista to boot to port 5 & 6 drives (maybe with some Ghost magic), but at least you can use them for something. I've got an external 3.4 TB eSATA array, works great with nothing more than forcing the correct drivers.
OS X already see's the extra ports so nothing needed there.
My install was on Vista x64 with SP1 & Intel 8.2.
Hope this helps.

I wonder if he is referring to this, the closest I could find after Google and trying to find AHCI driver.

  • How diagnose the extra SATA ports on the Mac Pro (early 2008) logic board?

I have had two SSDs in an OWC multi-mount in the second optical bay, one for Lion and one for Photoshop scratch. However, I recently began having intermittent boot problems. Sometimes there wouldn't be an Apple symbol upon boot/reboot, yet sometimes there would and the computer would boot. I have not experienced any crashes, kernel panics or such.
I thought the Lion SSD was faulty so installed Mountain Lion on the scratch drive, a Mercury Electra 3G which I have recently received as a replacement from OWC due to a previously faulty SSD. However, immediately there were boot problems from that SSD.
I have a feeling there is something wrong with the two extra SATA ports on the logic board. I am now booted off the Lion SSD placed in an external USB enclosure, which works but is a bit slower (I will get a bracket to install that SSD in the ordinary internal bays).
My question is how I can diagnose the logic board generally and specifically the extra SATA ports. I have Tech Tool Pro 6. I also thought I had AHT but on the Leopard DVD 1, which came with the Mac Pro (10.5.2) and on which AHT is supposed to be there is no trace of AHT. Odd. Booting from that DVD will only bring up the Leopard installer.
Btw I do think the Electra is broken because I am unable to boot ML from it in the USB enclosure.
Grateful for any ideas how to check my logic board.
    Cheers
    /p

If you could move the drives easily to another location then you could test the drives and also - make backup images! just to be safe. SSDs and their firmware and problems are almost all too common, even this last June a large issue with SandForce which OWC uses in some/most of theirs, and I get the feeling they are usually behind in testing and sending out firmware updates.
Corsair, Crucial and Intel have all had issues since it surfaced in May.
Diagnosing a motherboard with Apple Service Diagnostic CD is one thing. Swapping out SATA cables though no. WD Lifeguard does check communication to an SATA device drive and can - but you need to see the device in Windows or their boot CD (linux I imagine). Quite good utility though maybe not for an SSD.

  • P67a-gd65 - how to enable marvel sata ports 7-8?

    built my first pc.
    using p67a-gd65.
ports 1-6 are managed by intel code, if I understand correctly.  They work fine and I can see them in the bios.
ports 7-8 are managed by marvel code, if I understand correctly.  They do not work and I cannot see them in the bios, but I do see a reference to marvel at boot-up.
is there something special I have to do to enable ports 7-8?
I searched the forum and can't find anything on this.
thanks in advance for any help you might provide.

I must be missing something; exactly where and how do I enable the controller?
when I look at 'system status' I see
    sata port1
    sata port2
    sata port3
    sata port4
    sata port5
    sata port6
and it shows the devices I have plugged in, and that is good.
    I then see
    e-sata port1
    e-sata port2
where 'I thought' sata port7 and sata port8 would be listed, and they show a status of 'not present'.
    thanks

  • How to use non-standard port for vnc?

Our Windows users who use RDC to connect to their desktops from off-site come in on a non-standard port number. Part of our security setup.
I'd like to do the same with Mac users who use screen sharing and vnc to connect remotely.
How can I specify another port number at both ends to accomplish this?
I can find nothing in the Network Utility app, or in the KB.
Surely there's a short sequence of Terminal commands that will do this?

I haven't tried this so don't know whether it will work. But I think it will. Presuming the target machine is a Mac, see if editing its /etc/services file will do it. Find the two lines that start with "vnc-server" and change the port number there. Launch Terminal.app as an administratively privileged user, sudo pico /etc/services, ^w to search for vnc-server, make the changes, ^x to exit, y to save and overwrite. Also, you will need to have screen sharing enabled in the target machine's System Preferences' Sharing, and the authorized users defined there, too. Reboot. Now, on the remote client, assuming it is also a Mac, the user would type ⌘k in the Finder (or mouse to Finder > Go > Connect to Server), and enter something like vnc://123.45.67.89:55900 where you substitute the actual IP address or host name for where I have entered 123.45.67.89, and where you substitute the actual alternate port number where I have entered 55900. Of course, in the clients' Screen Sharing's Preferences, they should choose to encrypt the entire session, not just the login. Like I said, I haven't tried this because I just tunnel my vnc stuff through ssh, but I'm thinking that this should work.

  • H97M-G43 how to turn off SATA port in a BIOS?

Hello, i've installed Ubuntu on my first hard drive (SSD) and recently bought the second drive (SSD). I plan to install Windows 8 on it. It is possible to turn off sata port with first hard drive in a BIOS?

Quote from: Nichrome on 31-August-14, 04:20:07
    Hello,
Not really disable SATA port, as if something is connected then it will detect this. If not, then no.
Go into BIOS and change boot priority order in order to set HDD or SSD to be #1 when booting. Also when you install Windows, it will actually show you all partitions (both HDD and SSD).
Thanks, how can i correctly change the boot order (Step by step, please)? And what is Hard drive BBS Priorities? And UEFI BBS Priorities?

  • Cannot use ASMedia SATA ports

I can't get my ASMedia ports to work using standard HDD in AHCI mode. Has anyone else had this issue and have any solutions? I had a similar issue with my ASRock Z77 Extreme4 motherboard but that issue was resolved by rolling back my IRST drivers to version 11.2 WHQL. The IRST 11.2 drivers won't install on this motherboard saying my system doesn't meet requirements. I am using IRST 13.1 with ASMedia 2.8.0 drivers. I get the PC to boot, used Disk Mgmt to format the drives and reboot. Every time IRST starts the ASMedia drives fall out and are no longer detected. I currently have 5,708 errors in my Event Viewer saying Drive4 is not ready for use Event ID 15. It is a 1 TB Seagate Barracuda drive.
    http://forums.tweaktown.com/asrock/53481-asmedia-sata_3-port-causes-irst-stop-responding-solved-print.html

I resolved the problem by deleting the ASMedia drivers and using Device Mgr to "Update Drivers / Browse My Computer" and selecting the Microsoft default drivers. So far my 1 TB Seagate drive is running fine with my CD/DVD Combo on the other port. I don't know if there will be issues if I connect two HDD to the ASMedia ports or not. I thought I would post this in case it would help someone else having issues. I haven't ran any benchmarks for performance but it seems fairly snappy when copying files from my SSD to the HDD.
BTW, I am ditching my EVGA 680 SLI for a new MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4G which will be here tomorrow. It matches my motherboard color scheme and layout perfectly. I am really looking forward to seeing that lighted dragon logo inside my PC's window. I am hoping this MSI video board serves me as well as my EVGA boards have in the past.
EDIT: I spoke too soon. After copying several folders to the Seagate drive my PC froze up. Keyboard and mouse were unresponsive and it required a hard restart. I tried switching ports for the mouse and the light only flickered briefly when I plugged it in. The Seagate drive is working fine on my free Intel SATA port. I have abandoned the notion of running 3 Samsung drives in a RAID array because benchmarks show a performance drop off. Two SSD in RAID_0 seem to be best for optimum performance. I'm still looking forward to my new MSI video board. Maybe this mobo needs RMA? Maybe power issues with the ASMedia SATA ports? IDK, I need to RMA sooner or later because one of the BIOS is fried.

  • How to use non default port 1521 while 11.2.0.1 grid upgrade to 11.2.0.2

    Hi Team ,
We are planning 11.2.0.1 Grid infra rolling upgrade to 11.2.0.2 with out any downtime.
But while up gradation due to default scan port 1521 , 11.2.0.1 databases are not able to connect (remote connections)
We are using 1900 port for existing 11.2.0.1 grid infra scan.
While up gradation it is taking default port of 1521 insted of existing port 1900.
Please provide the solution to use non default port while 11.2.0.2 up gradation.
After upgrade the status as below.
    grdoratst104:/apps/grid/grdhome:+ASM4> srvctl config scan_listener
SCAN Listener LISTENER_SCAN1 exists. Port: TCP:1521
SCAN Listener LISTENER_SCAN2 exists. Port: TCP:1521
SCAN Listener LISTENER_SCAN3 exists. Port: TCP:1521
Here I was getting TNS:no Listener errors from the client connections.
I have modifyed the scan port then it is working fine.
    grdoratst104:/apps/grid/grdhome:+ASM4> srvctl modify scan_listener -p TCP:1800
    grdoratst104:/apps/grid/grdhome:+ASM4> srvctl config scan_listener
SCAN Listener LISTENER_SCAN1 exists. Port: TCP:1800
SCAN Listener LISTENER_SCAN2 exists. Port: TCP:1800
SCAN Listener LISTENER_SCAN3 exists. Port: TCP:1800
    grdoratst104:/apps/grid/grdhome:+ASM4>
Here the problem is we need to do the grid infra upgrade with out downtime, but due this default port issue clients are not able to connect to the database.
    Thanks

Why are you using a non default port? It does not improve security. It makes network management more complex. And causes the type of issues that you are facing now.
So before changing defaults, make sure that your reasons are technically sound. And using port 1900 when 1521 is available, is not technically sound by any means.
As for addressing the problem you have created for yourself by mucking around with port numbers. Use a NAT firewall (on each RAC node) to rewrite packets headers received on port 1900 and send these to the server's port 1521 instead (on the VIP or static IP as required).
This can be fairly easily done using iptables if your o/s is Linux. You need to:
    a) create a pre-routing NAT rule
    b) create a post-routing NAT rule
    c) create a forwarding filter rule for port 1900/tcp
    d) create an input filter rule to accept traffic on 1900/tcp

This Dot Net web service has one port and 2 partner links (one for each operation). I created a client wsdl which also has 2 operations(say client1 and client2). Client wsdl contains one port and a partner link.
I also created 2 different BPEL processes for client1-provider1 and client2-provider2 operations, i want to create a composite application with both this bpel. If I deploy my composite application I can able to see only one connection from client1-provider1. How to add soap binding manully so that I can test both the processes. • How to use front microphone port for Vo

Hey guys, I'm using a trusty old audigy platinum, and I recently grabbed a headset to hop into gaming chat and VoIP with friends. The microphone works fine, because I can hear myself speaking through the headset. However, when I try to use it, no VoIP software recognizes it. I believe that the problem is that it's plugged into Microphone/Line-In 2 on my front panel. It's not a software-specific problem, because both GTalk and Skype have it. I do know there's some way to do a software work around, because some of my sound editting software allows me to take the input from the front(such as a guitar) and record and play fine.
What I need, is some way to pass off Microphone/Line-in 2 as Mic port , or some specific work around to make both Skype and GTalk work with the front ports. Putting it in the back is really not an option.
Thanks in advance for any help.

To use it with skype, go to options and under audio devices there should be an option called "Let Skype adjust my sound device settings." Untick this box and manually set the recording source to be "Mic2/Line-In 2."
The it should work with Skype without a problem

One more thing when we need this type of constructor.

In a multi-homed machine (i.e. more than one Network Card) you can bind a socket or server socket to a specific IP address to associate it with a certain subnetwork, or can bind it to the local loopback address.
However, the IP must be either a valid and available Multicast IP, local loopback, or valid IP aasigned to any network adapter on the machine.
