How would you set up this network?

ingredients: Mac Pro, Macbook Pro, Apple TV, 1 G airport express, 1 N airport express, Airport Extreme Bass Station, 1 medium sized 1 floor apartment.
the current problem is that the network runs perfectly except for my main computer - the Mac Pro (1 year old) which always disconnects and gives me constant problems. would be nice for everything to work well so i can finally play music throughout the place.
wireless N? G? mixed? extend the wireless signal? interference robustness? and most importantly - how can i choose a channel that i know the neighbours aren't on?
any help appreciated! this has been driving me mad for 6 months now

thanks for the help! by going N I lose 1 airport express but it's worth it if it will fix things.
Like many people on here i have changed settings 9000 times to try and get the airport expresses from dropping out when streaming to them.
The main problem is the airport card in this Mac Pro - I think it is a bad one.
Running a cable would fix things probably although I dont really want cables running through the apartment, I think I will do this to avoid any further headaches.
Thanks for the input! Maybe in 1 week I will be able to buy a new Mac Pro with a new Airport card - depends on the expo!

  • How would YOU set up your disks?

I asked about this a year ago when I was first setting up my system (thanks Harm and everyone else who responded then), but there wasn't any clear consensus then and there have been a few threads touching on this since, so it seems there are more than a few people interested in this.
In my workstation I've got 7 x 1TB internal SATA drives (not counting the system drive, which is not even on the RAID controller). When first setting them up I couldn't decide whether the best performance could be achieved via a huge RAID, separate disks with one type of media on each, or some hybrid. I elected to go with one huge RAID5 with a hot spare, netting me about 5TB capacity, but I still keep wondering if assigning each media type to a separate drive might be faster as we could then be sure we're not trying to read and write to the same drive at any given time, nor would we ever be trying to get multiple media reads from the same disk at once.
Using CS3 with Cineform Aspect, but have ordered upgrades to both. Pretty tricked out system but I want to keep that part out of it and just focus on the disk setup, all else being equal. Have been pretty happy with disk throughput so far but am always wondering about that perfect balance of performance and stability. My intention in the next few weeks is to quadruple-boot system with XP 32, XP 64, Vista 64 and Win7 and try to do controlled experiments with each, so I want the OS to be the only variable.
Obviously I've read all the Adobe Help, articles and wiki material about this but would like opinions from those on this board. The Adobe material tells you what you CAN do but not what you SHOULD do...
One possible "hybrid" setup I am considering:
Captured video on 4-drive RAID 5 with hot spare (should give me about 2TB capacity)
    Captured audio on drive 5
Previews and media cache on Drive 6
    Output renders on drive 7
Or maybe I am just over-thinking this and performances differences will be insignificant.
So you're staring at 7 drives that could be configured any way you like. What would YOU do?

Yes, I probably should have gone a little bit in to the type of video I mostly do, but I thought I should keep the experiment generic and theoretical. Nonetheless, I do mainly two types of projects, always in HDV with Cineform Aspect HD:
--Multicam edits of stage productions, which usually results in four one-hour long continuous clips edited in multicam mode. Very little effects applied; maybe a few titles and cross-dissolves, but that's about it. Some color correction is sometimes necessary. I generally break each act into its own project, and each scene gets its own sequence.
--Sports videos, which usually have close to a thousand clips (!) in the project panel and end up using perhaps 500 or so, very short shots, averaging about a second or two each. Some sequences involve multiple effects on each clip. These may be broken up into several sequences, each of which sometimes gets its own project. As you can imagine, with this many clips projects are pretty slow to load, even on a fast system, and as the sequences get more complex Premiere bogs down a lot. One five minute sequence consisting of a hundred or so shots, with motion, speed, opacity or color correction applied to every clip (sometimes more than one effect) takes about 90 minutes just to render a preview. That is, when it doesn't crash. I nearly always get an out-of-memory or other unexplained error and have to shut down, reboot, and render a section at a time. CFHD-AVI exports work fine, no crashing, but are time-consuming.
Harm, good suggestions. Right now I've got all 8 internal slots filled so adding an 8th disk may not be really practical. I probably should have reiterated that I have the system drive on channel 0, and the 7 workdrives on channels 1-7. I do have an external USB drive, but I use that only for archive and backup. Experimentally, my plan is pretty much what you outlined, except in reverse -- test the four OSes with my current config (which is all one big drive, but with spanned volumes due to the 2TB limitation in 32-bit OS) and then, based on the fastest OS, kill all the others and spend some time with different disk configs. A middle step will be to add 16 extra gigs of RAM for the 64-bit OSes after testing all 4 with my current 4 gigs, just to try to tease out any differences of OS alone vs. just the presence of extra RAM.
These are all great ideas. As before, it seems there are as many ways to do this as there are users. Sometimes there is just too much choice.
Thanks to all who've posted ideas -- keep them coming. Once I get all the OSes installed and figure out licensing/activation issues, I'll post results.

  • How would you set up your hard drives if you had these to work with

    So I currently have :
    1 internal 1 Tb 7200 HDD
    1 internal 300gb 7200 HDD
This is all im using right now, but I also have a 3 TB external that I use to store media and also edit from. I was bringing the footage into the internal drives to edit from but space was growing thin.
I bought other drives to redo my entire hard drive set up while incorporating the old ones as well
    1 2 Tb internal 7300 HDD
2 250gb SSD (They are however not the same brand.)
If someone could please give an opinion on how they would set these up from scratch that would be swell, or you can also recommend adding in another drive into the mix as well.

    ok, the internals Im using now i can't get in to see the model numbers, but for the others they are;
    Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST2000NM0033 2 TB 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Newegg.com
Kingston SSDNow V200 Series SV200S3/256G 2.5" 256GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive
    SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA

  • How would you react to this?

Might not be a bad idea to show your director the cost savings of having you do the upgrade versus a consultant. Since you did the upgrade from 2003 to 2010, I'd be curious whether or not Exchange was considered mission critical then. I think you're director is being short-sighted considering the support scenario when something goes wrong. On one hand, we have a local person (you) doing the upgrade and can potentially address issues immediately, or we have an external person doing the upgrade, who doesn't know your network inside and out, and will have an inevitable delay with presenting a solution. On a personal note, it sounds like it's time to look for the next gig. Of course, I don't know the entire situation. I could see using a consultant as a way of validating your ideas or offering a second opinion. However, this reads as if the...

Little bit of background, been at my company for 8 years. Small IT staff: director, network admin (myself), a help desk tech, reporting/salesforce admin, and an intern. 2-3 years ago, got a title change to senior network admin. We've been investigating moving to O365. Not exactly my preferred thing to do, but we've been looking into it. Director went to a consultant to investigate cost of sticking with on-premise and having the same level of redundancy and upgrade to 2013/16+upgradingeveryone`sofficeversions, etcvs going with O365.I noticed professional fees to upgrade exchange ($10k) and inquired why this was there, as I performed the last upgrade myself (2003 to 2010) w/ no issues. I was basically told, since Exchange was a mission critical system, we would rely on the consultant to do the upgrade, since I wouldn't have done such an...

  • How would I set up this table of Contents?

I want a TOC that looks like this:
    Chapter title.......................................author's name......................................page number
Is this possible? I have always done it manually.
    Thanks
    Ian

I can give you something that will be a little less manual, although not completely automated. It might seem like a lot of work, but it only takes a bit of time in the setup, and after that, it's all copying and pasting. Have a look at this screenshot:
I put in some placeholder text, created a headline style, and another style (the 6pt magenta text) called For TOC. I put in the title and author placeholders, separated by a tab and set the width of the text frame to something just below the width of the text frame that holds the body text, and I collapsed the height to fit the text. I set the placeholder text frame to non-printing with Window>Output>Attributes, copied the frame, and pasted it just after the headline paragraph (with a space between the headline and the now-anchored placeholder frame).
I then set the inline object to a custom position so that no matter where the headline was on the page, the anchored frame would be at the top of the page away from the spine. And, because the inline frame is set to non-printing, it won't show up on printouts or when exported to PDF. Once that's all set up, just copy the anchor and the space (you can use the story editor to make sure you are selecting just those two things) and paste them next to any headlines (or titles, in your case). You then copy the titles from the main text and paste them over the Title in the placeholder (I used Edit>Paste Without Formatting so that the style of the headline would change to the style of the placeholder). You would also type in the name of the author when you are entering the title into the placeholder.
In the table of contents, you would select the For TOC style, instead of the headline style for inclusion into the TOC. Make a paragraph style for the actual TOC, and set the tab stops there, and you will have:
    Title..............Author................Page #
The placeholder will travel with the title, so as long as you remember to update any text in the placeholder if you choose to update the titles, you should be good to go.

  • How would you use these Apple devices to create the best network?

I have the following devices and want to create the best network for my 3 story home:
Time Capsule 3GB, latest generation (needs to be located on middle floor in a corner room by the Comcast modem)
    Time Capsule late 2009
    Airport Express 2010
More data, the devices that connect to this network:
New MacBook pro (in same room with new Time Capsule)
New iMac (in same room with Time Capsule)
    2009 iMac (on second floor)
    Iphone 5 and 5s
    ipad Minis
    ipad Airs
    Apple TV second generation
I've done some testing and the signal is pretty good on the second floor (meaning that the download speeds on the second floor iMac are the same as those in the same room with the new Time Capsule).  But the upstairs bedrooms have speeds cut by 50%.
There is no reasonable way to connect the new Time Capsule by ethernet to any other devices.
Would it be helpful to extend the wireless network "wirelessly" with the old Time Capsule in an area upstairs with strong signal?  Would the old TC then "re-pump" the signal into the bedrooms which don't have line of sight with the new TC?
How would I best do this?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Time Capsule 3GB, latest generation (needs to be located on middle floor in a corner room by the Comcast modem)
    Time Capsule late 2009
    Airport Express 2010
So, the old Time Capsule and AirPort Express are near the new Time Capsule and connected to it with an Ethernet cable.....or are the old Time Capsule and Express not even in use at all?
Would it be helpful to extend the wireless network "wirelessly" with the old Time Capsule in an area upstairs with strong signal?
While it would be better if you could connect the old Time Capsule to the new Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection, the old Time Capsule might help things out a bit in the bedroom area if it is located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the new Time Capsule.
This is one of those situations where performance cannot be predicted and you simply have to try it out in your home to see how well it will work. It could not hurt to use the old TC to extend the signal wirelessly to the bedroom area, if you want to give that a try.
You did not mention the AirPort Express, but it could possibly be located downstairs if you need more wireless signal coverage in a given area. The trick again, is to find a location where the Express can both receive a strong wireless signal and also provide additional wireless coverage.
Setting up the old Time Capsule or Express will only take a few minutes if you want to give things a try. Post back if you need more details on "how" to do this.

How do I use the time capsule to share itunes music between multiple apple devices? Also, is it possible to control the music on one device using another, and how do you set this up?

unless i'm missing something, i think you got mixed up, this is easy google for walk throughs
i'm assuming this is the new 3tb tc AC or 'tower' shape, if so, its wifi will run circles around your at&t device
unplug the at&t box for a minute and plug it back in
factory reset your tc - unplug it, hold down reset and keep holding while you plug it back in - only release reset when amber light flashes in 10-20s
connect the tc to your at&t box via eth in the wan port, wait 1 minute, open airport utility look in 'other wifi devices' to setup the tc
create a new wifi network (give it a different name than your at&t one) and put the tc in bridge mode (it may do this automatically for you, but you should double check) under the 'network' tab
login to your at&t router and disable wifi on it
add new clients to the new wifi network, and point your Macs to the time machine for backups

  • How do you set up for AirPrint an HP110A wireless printer without a PC on a wifi network using a Verizon FIOS router)

Purchasing an HP110A wireless printer for my 85 year old father who has and Ipad
This pritner is fully compatible with Airplay per HP site
    My dad has no PC
    He knows the router passcode.
    What is the process?
Will the HP printer to be purchased shortly work out of the box w/no drivers
How do you set the printer up to work on the iPad?

    Richard-
I have the HP D110 AirPrint printer.  As I recall, it was configured in Ad Hoc network mode when first received.  It was necessary to set it up to access my WiFi router before I could use it with the internet connection.  Then, as part of the setup process, it downloaded the latest firmware update from HP.  This was all done from the printer control panel, and no PC was needed.
As Pvonk mentioned, your router must be able to correctly handle Bonjour data for iPad to print to an AirPrint printer.  Go ahead and try it, it may work.  If the iPad can't find the printer, you will need to contact Verizon for help in configuring the router or getting a different router that is compatible.
By now, you should realize that a PC is needed to update the iPad.  I assume your Dad visits you when he needs use of a PC.

    Thanks!

    That is poor type layout.
European languages read left to right, a ragged left edge is the worst possible layout for listed data.
The only circumstance you should use the left/right alignment is in header/footers for running heads and page numbers wheer they are widely separated and therefore easy to scan as individual short snipetts of text.

  • I need to change my apple id in my ipod (it was an old email address).  How would you do this?

I need to change my apple ID in my ipod touch (it was an old email address).  I have changed to setting in itunes.  How would you do this? - not sure what my OS is.

Go to Settings>Store (or Settings>iTunes and App Stores for iOS 6) and sign out and sign in with the other/updated account.

  • Advice - how would you do this?

I have a compound path (an inner rectangle and an outer one) in an opacity mask. I have to apply an b/w gradient from the outer to the inner ractangle.
I can only find a feature to add circular an linear gradients!
    How would you do this?

    haemse,
Transitions like this are made with Blends; Object>Blend>Options to ensure the options you want, then Object>Blend>Make.
    In this case you may:
    1) Object>Compound Path>Release;
    2) For each rectangle, set Stroke to the Fill Color and set Fill to None;
    3) Select both and Object>Blend>Make (keep it Smooth).
In other words replace the Compound Path with a Blend.

  • HT1175 how do you set the airport time capsule as the primary base station rather than as a network client?

how do you set the airport time capsule as the primary base station rather than as a network client?

The Time Capsule needs to connect to a simple modem......not a modem/router or gateway type of device that is often furnished by Internet Service Providers.
So, the first logical question here would be......
What is the make and model number of the device that you call your "modem"?

  • How Would You Do This Effect in Logic?

I'm trying to figure out how I would best achieve the vocal effect in Kesha's song "BLOW."
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_USZ2D0GTxo
In the chorus, there is the catchy "blow....oh...oh..oh..oh..oh..oh" section. Someone suggested she sings the entire line, which gets interrupted by a gate, which could be triggered by a keyboard, so everytime you hit a note, it stops the steady note she's singing. If you guys think that's what they are doing, how would I set this up? This kind of thing goes on in modern pop all the time and I have to find a way to do this effect before it drives me crazy;)
I get hired to do karaoke tracks all the time and whenever there is one these to day it is always a pain due to my being more a traditional guitar, keyboard "organic" producer than synth/FX guy.
    Thanks for any help.
    Tom

    Thanks David.
The plug ins you mention don't really help though, because they can only be set to preset patterns. This is a specific pattern of course. I know The Bee Gees did this in Robin Gibb song from the 80s called "Boys Do Fall In Love" ....there was a section that went "B......B...B...Boys fall in love." They did it by sampling the phrase into the Emulator back then and playing the phrase. I guess I could do that with EXS.
The best solution would be if there was a way to make a gate respond to a midi track, so I could play the rhythm on the midi track, quantize it, then use that as a trigger to the gate...gonna try that...Guess I could also record the midi track as a sidestick or something and use that audio track to trigger the gate....hmmmm.

    Hi,
is there any way i can stop the pop-up box displaying to open pdf file in sharepoint document library? Right now whenever i am trying to open pdf file, asking "how would you like to open"  Read only or edit mode. currently MIME Type is setup
    but still pop-up message box.
    Thanks in advanced!

    Hi ,
As far as I know, This is a default feature. and is not recommended to delete or deactivate this pop up.
This is a feature of office and there is a dll called owssupp.dll which is responsible for getting the popup to open.
You can go to IE tools> addon settings and deactivate the above dll (sharepoint open document class). But if you do so, then the other office office files which are word/excel/pptx etc.. would aslo gets affected and they also wont get the popup.
    Hope this helps.
