HP laserjet m1005 printer

I have never understood how printing works in linux and this adds to my woes while installing printers. I have this HP printer and am using cups 1.6. Once
the printer is plugged in I can see the following with dmesg
[    2.629357] usb 2-1.6: new low-speed USB device number 6 using ehci_hcd
[    3.980041] usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 5 if 1 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x03F0 pid 0x3B17
[    3.980060] usbcore: registered new interface driver usblp
I assume that this means that the kernel detected that a printer was plugged in and registered an "interface driver" (I do not know what an "interface driver"
is).  Now, cups needs to detect this printer. I do not understand why it does not? I mean, the kernel has already identified it as a printer.
Then, I am confused about what hp-setup does. In the wiki about cups, hp-setup was not mentioned. Nevetheless, when I run hp-setup as root I find that
it detects the connected printer
Using device: hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_M1005?serial=KJ2SR56
but it has its own issues: all this mess about python2, python3 and python-dbus. May be I will be able to install this printer by reading "n" number of forums
but I want to understand the process of printing right from the point I connect my printer so that I can be satisfied that I have learnt something. Can
somebody please explain what is this process in simple terms ? Please let me know if any other information is needed regarding my printer.

The "interface driver" is usblp, which is the kernel module that creates (I believe) /dev/usb/lp0. I'm not 100% sure about the device location, because I've had issues with CUPS 1.6 and my printer doesn't like the usblp kernel module.

As 12eason suggested, you probably won't need to do much to get your printer working. Judging by a quick Google search, it doesn't appear that your printer requires the firmware to be uploaded to the device at connect time. That means hp-setup probably won't do much for you beyond setting up the print queue in CUPS if you follow through the entire series of questions. It doesn't work on my printer (HP LaserJet 1020, requires firmware), but it may on yours. Check your /etc/cups/printers.conf for entries after you've run through the entirety of hp-setup.

Truth be told, you might be better off asking this on a CUPS-related mailing list. CUPS is complicated software and the process is further affected by which backends you have available (hplip adds new ones, for instance).
Are you mostly interested in how CUPS works or are you having issues getting it to work with your printer? I suspect the latter, but I'm also curious what you got out of the Arch Wiki on CUPS and what you've tried (you have tried using the web interface to add the printer, haven't you?).
In short: Just because the kernel is reporting a printer attached doesn't mean it knows how to print to it (it doesn't--the kernel isn't responsible for that anymore than it should be responsible for HTTP). That's the job of CUPS. You also have to have CUPS configured with the correct PPDs for your printer since, AFAIK, CUPS essentially treats all printers as PostScript devices; the backends and PPDs simply translate PS to the native protocol of the printer (mine is a Zjstream protocol printer, which requires either hplip or foo2zjs--yours is different). If CUPS isn't configured (read the wiki; also, you may need to futz with /etc/cups/cupsd.conf if you have trouble accessing http://localhost:631), it won't print, regardless of what the kernel is reporting.

  • No driver for HP LaserJet M1005 in OSX10.9 Mavericks?

Trying to connect a HP LaserJet M1005 printer to a TimeCapsule via Bonjour and add this printer to a fairly new Macbook Pro 13 Retina with Mac OSX10.9.
It used to work fine before I upgraded to 10.9. Now it can´t find any driver even after I run the Software update. It says it´s not available on the apple server right now.
On HP website it says the way to install is to use Apple Software update. Can´t even add the printer with USB, same thing no driver installed.
    So now what?

It doesn't look like there is a Mavericks-compatible driver for your printer.
    Your options are:
see if you can use AirPrint or a generic driver: OS X Mountain Lion: If the software for your printer can’t be found
see if there is a driver for your printer at Gutenprint for Mac OS X
go back to Mountain Lion: How to revert OS X back from Mavericks: Apple Support Communities

  • HP Laserjet M1005 MFP won't work with a DLINK DPR-2000 Print server.

I have an HP Laserjet M1005 MFP and am trying to connect it to a DLINK DPR-2000 Print server.  After the setup no matter what I do the Laserjet shows up as offline on the print server.  The print server recognises it as the correct model it's just always offline aned hence I can get nothing to print.
I have done the latest firmware upgrade on the printer to 20120910.
    Any ideas?

Sounds like you are having an issue getting this printer to be recognized fully on the network the print server is set up on. First of all, what all can you tell me about the network environment it is operating on? I would suggest that you try installing the PL6 drivers fro this laserjet after removing the original software and see if that gives you greater control over the machine and its functions :

  • HP LaserJet M1005 MFP and Windows 7 - Won't Install

I have just acquired an HP Notebook which connects well to an old HP LaserJet 6L as a local printer, but it won't connect to the HP LaserJet M1005 MFP.   It does not find drivers when it searches on the net, and the drivers won't install from the CD which came with the printer either - it just hangs after a while.
I read some posts from other people who also have related problems.   Can anybody help please?

The Windows 7 32-bit Print/Scan driver software can be found here <http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=1839459&...>.
The Windows 7 64-bit Print/Scan driver software can be found here <http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=1839459&...>
You are correct though, the installer on the CD does not support Windows 7 and there are no driver in Windows 7 or in Windows Update for this product. Hope this helps.

  • Cannot scan with HP LaserJet M1005 MFP

I updated to Snow Leopard 10.6.3 yesterday. Big mistake as I cannot now scan with my HP LaserJet M1005 MFP. I have been unable to find a solution here or via Google. Does anyone know if this is possible? I realize this device has never been "Mac friendly" (one might even say, not compatible.... despite HP's over-generous claims), but I would have thought there would be a new driver for SL by now.
If not, could anyone recommend a non-HP scanner (not MFP) that works well with SL?
    thanks!

    Hi @3Digit ,
I see that you are having issues scanning, there isn't any scanning software in the HP folder. I would like to help you out today.
Open the HP Scan window with one of the following methods:
Double-click the HP Scan icon () for your printer on the Windows desktop.
Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click the HP folder, click the name of your printer, and then click HP Scan.
If you are missing the HP Scan software altogether, then the full software didn't install on the computer.
If that is the case, uninstall and reinstall the printer software. Here is the link for the newest drivers. Software & Drivers.
First do these steps, before installing the software, just to make sure it fully installs.
I would disable all the start up programs and temporarily turn off the Antivirus Software and any Real Time Scanning in the Antivirus Software also, to see if that is causing the issue. How to use MSCONFIG . Click on the Startup tab and click Disable all, Then click the Services tab and check Hide All Microsoft Services.
I have provided a document for how to scan. It is for Windows 7, but the steps will also work for Windows Vista.
Scan from Windows 7 With the Full Feature HP Software for HP LaserJet Multifunction Printers
How is the printer connected? (USB/Ethernet/Wireless)

  • HP LaserJet M1005 MFP

Our company is using a HP LaserJet M1005 MFP all in one printer. this machine we purchase when our organisation had 2 staffs. but now we have 8 staffs and found difficult to handle this printer especially for scanning purpose.
kindly advise us, how can we convert this unit into a network printer and scanner. i am told by the supplier that we can convert this to a network printer but scanning won't work. we have to have a lot of scanning works to do from all the staffs.
    For Suhem

The printer only has USB connectivity.  Its not impossible but very difficult.  I would recommend getting an MFP with network capability.

  • HP LASERJET CP1525nw print error when printing online Gmail emails with Google Chrome

HP LASERJET CP1525nw print error when printing online Gmail emails with Google Chrome. Extra large font sizes and weird formatting issues only when printing emails from Gmail within Chrome. No problems when printing the same email from Gmail+Internet Exolorer or Thunderbird. Using the IE Tab extension in Chrome prints the email correctly but the style of Gmail's message window is completely weird ie: formatting bar is spread out vertically instead of horizontally. I believe it is clear that this is an application specific issue between the HP LASERJET CP1525nw printer and Google Chrome + Gmail. This printing scenario does not occur when printing anything else or when printing via another printer. I would appreciate receiving any suggestions to solve this issue.

  • HP LaserJet 4300 prints gibberish for one user, but prints OK for all others on a Windows 7 32-bit

HP LaserJet 4300 printer installed via LPT1 using Universal Print Driver v5.2.6.9321 on an HP 8100 desktop running Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 32-bit.
For one particular user, this printer prints gibberish no matter what type of document she attempts to print.
Not sure when the problem began, the user uses a network printer to work around this issue. She can print to any of the other HP printers on our network OK, including another 4300 down the hall.
Anyone else can log on and print the same documents OK on this desktop using this printer.
Have tried rebooting the HP 8100 and power cycled off/on the 4300. Also uninstalled and re-installed the 4300.
I have updated the firmware on this 4300.
Changing the print processor in the printer properties did not help either.
Virus and malware scans have not detected any issues.
Any advice for this issue would be greatly appreciated.

  • How can I determine how many pages my Laserjet 1020 printer has printed in its lifetime?

I am trying to be proactive in determining whether I need to plan to replace my Laserjet 1020 printer.  I know that I have seen printouts from resellers/refurbishers which show the number of pages that a printer has printed in its lifetime.  I am just trying to figure out how to get this information from my printer so that I can see how much life it has left.  Can anyone tell me how to generate this report?
    Thanks!!

    Adhvaresh,
"attach" is a word we usually use for plugging in cables - but I don't think that is what you mean.
If you want a driver for that model laserjet, I suggest you use the foo2hp set of drivers. Install Foomatic and ghostscript from here:

  • HP Color LaserJet 1600 Printer

I really love my HP Color LaserJet 1600 printer but haven't been able to successfully install it in my brand new MacBook Air 1.7 despite several attempts.
I have downloaded the correct Firmware Upgrade 20120928 v2.4 from HP Drivers web page. Unlocked RFU to ON position and installed the firmware. Added HP Color LaserJet 1600 Printer via USB, as required and my MacBook correctly identifies it as such. Though the driver I have chosen is HP Color LaserJet 2605 since the one for 1600 is not available in the database. The printer responds positively during the upgrade but later does not print. I can see the print command being transmitted to the printer but it stays dead.
Please help and let me know stepwise how to do it correctly.
