HP OFFICEJET PRO 8600 PLUS UNABLE TO SEND OR RECEIVE FAXES

I've had this Officejet 8600 about a year with no problems whatsoever. I scanned a document to computer earlier this week and when the scan finished, I received the message "unable to send or receive faxes."  I've been all over the forum, tried everything on the "Cannot send and receive faxes" page.  My connections are all good, I'm using a two-wire phone cord.  Just out of the blue, it quit.  Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.  Thanks.

Hello aimtheflame,
Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you're receiving a message stating "Unable to send and receive faxes" using the Officejet 8600 Plus. I will do my best to assist you! Just to clarify, are you able to scan or copy a document successfully?
If so, then I need to find out what type of added features do you have on this fax phone line? Did you change anything recently on this line? I would suggest following this entire HP document on Cannot Send or Receive Faxes. Try running a fax test report to verify if anything fails.
Also, try turning off error correction mode on your printer:
1. Press the Right arrow, then press setup (Wrench)
2. Press Fax menu, press advanced fax setup
3. Press error correction mode to off
Please post your results, as I will be looking forward to hearing from you. Have a great night!

  • Officejet Pro 8600 Plus will not send or receive fax

I have connected the fax machine to the phone outlet, the fax machine dials to another fax machine, the connection sounds like it is being made (the receiving fax machine sends out a noise signalling that it has received a phone call) and then the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus says that is is "Connecting" but no fax is sent. Nor can I receive a fax, even though the phone rings on the Officejet Pro 8600 Plus.   The error code I get is Error 388 which is that a communication error occurred during fax transmission.  However, this message occurs regardless of the fax number that I send to, and I had the recipient check that the receiving fax machine was working fine for transmittals from others.
Is it possible that the proble is that  I cannot send or receive faxes through a digital phone line?  That seems odd to me given that almost all phone lines in the modern era are digital.  How do I send and receive faxes with the Officejet Pro 8600 Plus if the only phone lines available are digital?  Also, 4 months ago, I used the same phone line for the same machine, and the fax function worked, but my phone provider assures me that the only phone lines that they have ever provided are digital.
    Thank you.

    Hello,
I am sorry to hear you are having issues with the fax functionality on your Officejet 8600 plus. I have found a document that has several troubleshooting steps you can try to narrow down the issue. I know some of these steps you have already done, but there might be a few that you haven't, like there is a HP test fax service you can use to test functionality.

  • HP Office Jet Pro 8600 N911g Unable to send or receive faxes

Product purchased on April 14, 2014 -  worked fine until July 03, 2014.  When I turned it on, I received the message "Unable to send or receive faxes"  All I can do is click OK.  I also lost the icon on the computer desktop a the same time.  The phone line is working.  I have a dial tone and can receive and make phone calls.  I uninstalled and reinstalled the software.  The icon is back on the computer desktop but still receive the same message "unable to send or receive faxes".  I don't use this feature much, but I will need it eventually......
Also, had HP look up the warranty status so I could find someone local to troubleshoot the issue.  HP said it was out of warranty - purchased in 2012!!??  I've sent in a copy of my receipt for proof of purchase, waiting for a reply from them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

    Hello,
I apollogize for taking so long to reply.  Life got in the way....school, health, holidays....
HP was NOT able to resolve this issue.  They sent me a replacement.  I was happy that they shipped it quickly (within days).  However, I was very unhappy with the replacement unit.  Although it looked new, the lid didn't feel tight and solid.  I thought it would break every time I lifted it.  I reinstalled everything, and it worked for a few days.  Then I started having different issues.  The scanner would not work properly.  It kept going into a "loop" and could not recover.  At first I thought it was because I was scanning multiple pages, but it also happened on single pages.  I do a LOT of scanning, more so than faxing.  I would have to shut the unit off - as in unplug it from the wall outlet - AND reboot my computer.  Then it would work for awhile.  The machine was also noisy when going into a print cycle.  I kept waiting for a paper jam.  I ended up calling HP Support and asking to speak to someone higher up the ranks.  No can do, until they go through the whole process of troubleshooting, an hour on the phone....all I wanted was another replacement - NEW.  Corporate was nice enough to replace the unit again.  However, they explained that there are NO NEW units upon replacement.  They are considered refurbished even if they are new, due to some "law".  Whatever.  Send me a unit that has a tight lid and works properly.  This unit took longer to arrive than the first replacement.  Long story short, worked fine for a short amount of time and then the same problems.  Now it gets hung up during printing AND scanning. (I have not bothered with the fax.)  In my opinion, it has to be a software problem within the unit.  It's a shame.  I really like the software program when scanning; through the years, I've tried Canon and Epson before returning to HP.
In my opinion, I think it is a KNOWN issue to HP and they are unable or unwilling to fix it.
My solution - I wasn't going to call HP and waste more time.  I went out and purchased something else for Christmas.
I will say that I had to visit my insurance agent when all this started, and I noticed that she has these units in her office - about four of them.  They work great, she has never had a problem.  However, she doesn't use them for faxing as she has a separate machine for that.  In a way, I wish I had kept my original unit and just given up my fax capabilities.  Hindsight is 20-20.  Hope my experience will help you make a decision.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus - no longer able to receive faxes

I can no longer receive faxes!  I consistently get error message 281.  My bookkeeper and I exchange faxes multiple times a week and it has always worked in the past.  She is able to send and receive faxes from her machine.  I am able to send faxes to her, but I cannot receive any faxes.  All other functions (i.e. printing, copying, scanning, and sending faxes) are still working.

This means there are noise on the line, or you are using a non traditional phone line like from a cable company.
Check with your phone company first.
On the fax, try the following:
turn off ECM (Error Correction Mode)
    set a slower transmission speed

  • "unable to send or receive faxes"

Trying to fax using VoIP.  Have a phone already plugged in.  When i plug into the telephone (fax) port on AIO unit it knocks out my phone.  Whenever i turn on the AIO it tells me "unable to send or receive faxes."   I've tried adjusting settings and restting them.  Nothing.  Is there someway i can test the port on the AIO?  Can i get inside the unit to check it?  Can i check using a multi-meter?
    I'm stuck.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer N911g wont send SD imapges to computer

    HP Officejet 8600 pro Plus  N911g  model # snprc-1101-01
I insert an SD card full of photos into the built in card reader - but have no option to send the photos to a file on my computer. Does this product only print but not send to a computer?  I need to edit the photos before printing.

    Hi @Rodney88,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand that your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer N911g wont send SD imapges to computer, and I am happy to help!
According to your printer's user guide found at this website, HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g User guides, as well as this guide, Printing From a Memory Card or USB Flash Drive. This printer only supports printing from SD cards.
In order to transfer the files to your computer, you will need an SD Card reader for your computer.
Hope this clears things up for you, and have a good day!

  • Unable to Completely Scan Legal Size Documents with Officejet Pro 8600 Plus

I am trying scan legal sized documents on my new Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. I have reviewed the forums, and this has been a recurring problem in the past (see link---  http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Scanning-Faxing-and-Copying/Scanning-Legal-Size-Documents/m-p/35416#M14...   ), but does not appear to be resolved. Whether I use the document feeder or the glass, the document is cut off at the bottom, and appears to be stopping at the 'A4' size, vs. legal. I cannot locate any setting on the scanner itself, or in the HP Utility software to change this, or even to be able to identify the current setting, if it is one.
I am using a Mac Pro, system 10.6.8, just installed and started using the printer a couple of days ago, and everything is up to date software-wise. Everything else on this machine has been working beautifully.
Can anyone identify what's going on here and how to correct it?
Thanks for your help--I specifically chose this particular unit over the next model down due to the legal sized glass/bed, and if I can't use it to scan legal docs, well, that's a problem. Thanks for your help!

    Please try the following steps:
    1. Open the HP Utility and select your device.
    2. From Scan Settings open the "Scan to Computer".
    3. Click the "Scan Tasks" tab.
    4. Select the Scan Shortcut used to scan, then click Edit.

  • Configuring "Scan To E-mail" on HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g

This is the same issue reported by several other users in this forum to which no solution has been provided.
I have been unsuccessful in setting up the scan to e-mail option for a HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g purchased on August 12th 2012 and using the firmware CLP1CN1150CR.
I am trying to do this through the Embedded Web Server interface to the printer from an iMac running Mac OS X 10.6.8 and HP Utility 5.8.0.  More specifically the page under "Scan -> Scan to E-mail -> Outgoing E-mail Profiles".
I have tried 2 different SMTP outgoing servers, each of which works well to send e-mail from the computer: Apple iCloud e-mail service (formerly known as Mobile Me, formerly known as .Mac) and AT&T Net e-mail service.  I verified that the server name, port number and authentication login/password values were all correct.
When scan to e-mail is used from the printer, I get an error message:  Cannot connect to server.  Check server name and address.
When tested from the computer during the setup of an outgoing e-mail profile, I get an error message:  The device could not send the test e-mail message. (EmailAccounts-timeout).
When I try to configure the page under "Settings -> E-mail Alerts -> E-mail Server" and use exactly the same values as the ones in the outgoing e-mail profile above, the Save and Test option fails with an error message:  The device could not send the test e-mail message.
Interestingly enough, I am able to use the computer's e-mail client with the option Scan To Computer -> E-mail as PDF or E-mail as JPEG.  With this option, the file is scanned and added as an attachment to a mail message from the Mail client under Mac OS X.  When I press the Send button, the e-mail is sent successfully through the same SMTP server.
All the error messages seem to indicate that the printer's e-mail client software is unable to establish a connection to the SMTP server.  However, it is not clear what configuration parameter is the one that could be causing the problem.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

After further research, I noticed that there are other possible default Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) port values:
Port 25 is the standard SMTP port number.
Port 465 is the port number for SMTP over SSL, Secure SMTP (SSMTP).
Port 587 is the dedicated port number for a Mail Submission Agent (MSA) that uses a variant of the SMTP, as specified in RFC 6409, which requires that clients are authorized and authenticated to use the mail submission service.
I had been using port  number 25 as this is the standard one.  However, all tests were failing.  Hence, I decided to try the tests with ports numbers 465 and 587.
Port number 465 failed with the same errors listed above.  However, the tests passed with port number 587.  After saving the successful configuration with port number 587, I tried the scan to e-mail option from the printer and it worked.
A mail submission agent (MSA) is a computer program or software agent that receives electronic mail messages from a mail user agent (MUA) and cooperates with a mail transfer agent (MTA) for delivery of the mail.
Historically in Internet mail, both MTA and MSA functions use port number 25.  However, many Internet Service Providers (ISPs)  and enterprise or institutional networks restrict the ability to connect to remote MTAs on port 25.
With a dedicated port 587, it is always possible for users to connect to their domain to submit new mail.  Availability of a MSA on port 587 enables nomadic users to continue to send mail via their preferred submission servers even from within others' networks.  Using a specific submission server is a requirement when sender policies or signing practices are enforced.
I know that many users may find the technical details boring or confusing, but I just wanted to include some background to those who actually care about this level of detail.  I also wanted to provide a possible solution to other users who are experiencing the same problem.
So, in a nutshell, if the Scan To E-mail option is not working for you using port number 25, then try one of the other SMTP port numbers listed above.  If none of them work, check your mail provider for other possible outgoing server port numbers.

  • PDF from Google Apps gmail/gdrive by Cloudprinter failed on HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One

    Dear forum contributors,
    1. HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One
    2. Linux OpenSuSE 12.2 64-bit
    3. Failed , after the failed message is a very long URL to my gmail attachment.
    4. This issue occured from the beginning, I have this printer only for one week.
When I print different kinds of PDF's from Google Apps (gmail and gdrive) by Google Cloudprinter I got a failed message at the HP eprinter Recent Print Jobs list.
Other prints from Google Cloudprinter, for example a webpage or a Google Docs document (not PDF) is working fine.
Also sending the same PDF's directly to my @hpeprinter.com e-mail address is working fine.
Is this a problem by Google Cloudprinter or HP e-print? How to solve the problem?
    Thanks for helping,
    Jurjen

After much research, I was unable to obtain a direct answer for two reasons: HP doesn't support Linux or Cloud Print beyond initial setup.  I was not very satisfied with this answer as I knew you would not really be either so I found some links and this may be the last I can provide any assistance here due to the two reasons above.  These links cover everything and should provide for you additional links to all of your questions I believe.
--Serving a Printer to Google Cloud Print from Linux--
    --Google Cloud Print on Linux--
--Installing Google Cloud Print on a Linux Server--
Otherwise, if ePrint is not working within the apps using a Windows-based computer I am more than happy to assist you.  You may continue to get support here from other community members regarding Linux but I may not be of much assistance.  I can say the first place to check is www.eprintcenter.com and see what the error messages say there under the print history, cancel any pending print jobs and try again.  Keep me posted on any additional information you may want to add regarding a Windows PC, otherwise I should direct you over to some great support provided by Google Cloud. Linux is suppose to work with these functions so I will leave you with this final excerpt from a Cloud Print Help site:
"Why is my document not printing?
    1. Make sure your Google Cloud Print connector is running on a computer with Mac, Windows, or Linux.
    2. If you're using Windows XP, make sure you also have the Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) installed.
    3. Confirm that the computer connected to your printer is powered on and that you are logged in."
This printer should support this feature so to make sure, you can log into www.eprintcenter.com and select ePrint Settings under the customized email address on this page and ensure you have Print Services ON.  I wish I could be of more assistance however.  I strongly recommend contacting the manufacturer of the apps you are having the problem with as these functions work when you use them like ePrint was intended (via email and mobile devices).  Good Luck!

  • Officejet Pro 8600 Plus scanner failure

I have an Officejet Pro 8600 Plus all-in-one. When I first got it, all of the features worked fine: print, scan, and copy. A few weeks ago, it started to not scan or copy, and printer was hit or miss. I have managed to resolve the printing issue, but it still wont scan or copy. I have tried uninstalling the printer both from the hp folder and control panel and then reinstalling the driver (I have the full feature one). I have tried the scan and print doctor, and it doesnt make it past the second step. The error message the printer displays is, "scanner failure: unable to scan, copy, or send a fax." I have also followed the steps to go into services, and both of the necessary dependencies are listed for the WIA, and the RPC and shell hardware are both started. Please help.

    Hello ld2hx,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having an issue with scanning, copying and faxing.
First off, please make sure that you have the printer power cable connected directly to a wall outlet and not a power bar/strip. Here is a document that uses a LaserJet printer as an example but it is meant for HP products in general. Please click on the following link that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
Please click on the following link for A 'Connection Error' or 'No Computer Detected' Error Message Displays during Scanning.

  • My officejet pro 8600 plus drops the LAN network connectivity , eprint works, and fixes LAN

OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus , computer running XP service Pack 3,  Wired to ethernet network with static compatible IP address.
When printer sits idly, loses LAN connectivity. Scanner and printer not seen by the computer. Unplugging cable, restarting printer does not solve the "Unable to communicate with Printer" error message.
The printer remains connected to the internet and sending an ePrint job from my Blackberry phone wakes up the connection between the computer and the Printer and scanner.
Any idea what is going on here and is there a better fix then sending a print job from my Blackberry?

I have the same problem. I'm even able to print from the EWS (Embedded Web Server) website since, even with this problem, I still have a working wireless Internet Connection. To do this just enter 192........ as the URL. The "192..." is the IP address of your printer.
I was online for over 3 hours in a chat session with an HP tech which proved totally worthless. These guys work out of a script (which is wrong in many instances) and are essentially useless unless you can get to a higher level of tech support. In fact, there can be serious damage to your computer if you blindly follow their advice.
My next step is to go higher up in the HP "food chain".
    Good Luck

  • HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus - "Scan to Computer" issue on Mac OSX 10.8 or 10.9

    Hi...
I have started experiencing the notorious "scan to computer not working" issue on my 1-month OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus, after having used the feature a number of times flawlessly.
There are a lot of potential solutions mentioned in dozens of relevant posts for both Mac and Windows, e.g.:
"Failed to open a session on the device"...
Scan to computer does not work...
Problem scanning to computer with an 8600 wireless
Unable to enable print to computer...
Enable Scan to Computer - Communication Error
Officejet Pro 8600 Utility does not show my Mac computer in scan settings
A 'Connection Error' or 'No Computer Detected' Error Message Displays during Scanning
HP Wireless All-in-One Printers - Communication Error between the Scanner and Your Computer...
    Etc.
However, in my case, no solution works, after several frustrating hours of trying to fix the issue, in Mac OS X Mountain Lion (10.8), or after upgrading to Maverics (10.9).
The behavior of the device points to a software issue, since:
The printer is visible on the network
The print function has been working fine
    The HP Scan function works
The generic Scan function from System Preferences works (although in earlier times it did not, or it stopped working soon after invoking it)
The "Scan to Computer" option does not appear in the HP Utility screen (although occasionally, after random sequences of unistalling and installing the software, it reappears)
The HP Installer crashes before completing the installation (this is a latest symptom, apparently happening before unvoking the HP Setup Assistant, which still works fine)
As already mentioned, I have tried all possible solutions, including software and firmware updates, Apple drivers, HP drivers (full featured software), clean (un)installations, followed by computer and printer restarts. Nothing seems to work.
The "Scan to Computer" feature of the 8600 always works on my Windows 7 laptop, after initial configuration.
The next step will be returning the device for a refund, but before resorting to that, I am giving it a last chance, in (the unlikely) case there is something new I have not tried yet.
    Thanks,
    PNS

  • Printing wirelessly on officejet pro 8600 plus

I have recently purchased an e printer (Officejet pro 8600 plus).  I have set it up on my laptop as well as mobile phone.  I have printed photos from my phone, emails from my phone, emails from my laptop, word documents and excel documents from my laptop.  It will only print sometimes.  I think it may have to do with the printer going to sleep.  On my mobile phone, I get a message saying ePrint job delayed  because the printer is turned OFF or not connected to Internet.  Well, it is on.  When I actually go to the room where the printer is located, if I touch the screen and press Apps, sometimes, the printer says "connection error", unable to connect to the server.  Other times when I have done this, it does make the connection.  It seems that if I wake up the printer, I can eventually get something to print.  But that defeats my purpose of the wireless capability.  Can you help?

I will need some more information in order to help out. What make and model of router do you have?  Does it ever  fail regular wireless jobs sent from the computer to the printer? Or is it just ePrint jobs that it fails/delays? Also what is the IP address for the printer?

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus (All-in-One) - Incoming Fax but mistakenly answer phone

I have landline phone service.  On this line, I have multiple phones, an answering machine, internet service via wireless Uverse setup, and the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus as a fax.  It's also a printer/scanner - but that uses the wireless Uverse service.
The unit works as a phone, if I answer in fewer than 4 rings.  The answer machine picks up after 4 rings.  If a fax, the fax connects after 6 rings.  (Auto answer function is turned on.)  This works.
If I mistakenly answer a fax call with the phone that the HP 8600 is connected through, I can press: 1,2,3 and the fax will answer.  This works.
Problem: If I mistakenly answer a fax call from one of the other phones in the house (same phone line is ringing as before - but the phone is NOT the one through which the HP 8600 is connected) - 1,2,3, does NOT work.  If I rush to the HP 8600: pressing the "fax" button on the unit does not connect the fax call; nor does the HP 8600 give me the option to "Accept" the call, when the phone as been answered.
Does anyone know what buttons to push to get the fax to connect when the phone line is answered at a phone?  Either at the answered phone OR if I can get to the HP 8600 when I hear the fax tone - buttons I can push on the HP 8600 to get it to respond to the fax tones coming in on the line?
Thanks to anyone who can help.

    Hello Vandy73,

I see that you have some concerns when it comes to answering a fax call by accident from another phone.  Pressing the 1.2.3 on the fax is the proper way to remedy the issue when you answer from the fax, however this feature will not work from another phone.
I do realize that this is an inconvenience.  The only resolution would be to contact the sender of the fax and have them resend.
    Thank you for your time.
    Cheers,
