HT1353 2nd gen iPod isn't recognized by iTunes nor Windows - What to do?

I have an iPod A 1019 (2nd gen?). When I connect it to the firewire connector on my PC, the unit screen shows a checkmark and "OK to disconnect." I tried to reset with Menu + Select (=nothing happened) but Menu + Play works. Still, PC + iTunes won't recognize iPod. Help? I suspect that the software on the iPod itself is too old but since the device cannot be discovered, I can't update it. I tried iPod transfer software, but nothing recognizes my oldie. Sigh.

Hi, Griff W.!
Thanks for taking the time to offer me the troubleshooting steps. I tried them all, but unfortunately to no avail. I can listen to the iPod, but once I connect it to my PC with the firewire cable, it still isn't recognized in iTunes or in Windows. I checked the Universal Serial Bus controllers. The iPod is nowhere to be seen. I checked the version of the software on the iPod and it's 1.5. Maybe that's the problem: the software is too old?
BTW, the firewire cable is charging the iPod.
Maybe if I could find someone with an old PC that has a firewire port?  But even if I were to make the iPod visible, would I be able to copy the songs onto my new iPod? From what I've been reading probably not. It's really exasperating. They music is legit, copied from my CDs or purchased.
I am looking at my new superslim iPod Touch 5th generation and right next to it the clickwheel iPod 2nd generation that's more than a cigarette pack sized. Progress. I guess.
Thanks for helping out. If you have any more ideas, please let me know.
Best regards,
D.

  • Ipod isn't recognized by Itunes or Windows

    Hi all,
I have recently sent my Ipod, which is less than a year old, to be checked over by the Apple technicians as it would not switch on nor be recognized when I connected it to the computer. They returned it saying there was no problem and if there had been, it had been resolved during their tests. Once safely knowing it worked again I ran a virus check on all the content I sync to my ipod and when nothing came up, I put it all back onto my ipod since it had been removed due to apple technician testing. Now the same problem is occurring. The Ipod wont switch on and seems to be in a continuous mode of restarting but not actually doing so. I can't restore the ipod as it is not recognized by itunes or windows, what can I do?
    Thanks for all your help

    Hi Mark!
Just checking on something. You've seen all of the info contained on these articles, correct?:

iPod displays a folder icon with an exclamation point
iPod displays a sad iPod icon
If you've already seen that, then I would suggest that you check out this helpful post by Mitch, another forum member here on the Discussions, about what to do with a Sad iPod icon or and folder icon on an iPod's screen:

I recently got a new 30gb iPod and a few days ago, i plugged it in. Then i went to iTunes and my ipod wasn't connected. So i went to apple.com and the whole nine yards. I did everything it said to do in that specific situation and it still doesn't work. So i have no idea what to do. Today I updated itunes just to give it one more shot. It still doesnt work. So i need to know how to fix this problem.

I have this problem as well. All you have to do is plug it in BEFORE you power up the comp.
I also have a question. After installing iTunes, my computer has been acting very odd, not running any programs but Steam when I start it up. If anyone can help, please post.

  • My 5th generation iPOD isn't recognized by iTunes?

When I plug my iPod into my computer, iTunes opens, but my iPod isn't recognized. Anyone else have this problem or any suggestions?

By all of those suggestions, do you mean the ones I mentioned in the paragraph about or the ones in the support article I linked? Does this 5G iPod via still power on?  DId you try connecting it to another PC or Mac to see if it is recognized there?  Did you check the dock connector for any signs of debris or damage to the pins that could be preventing a connection to your PC?
Any idea how long the average iPod should last? Ours if from 2006.
Most people never get the iPod to last 6 years, so consider yourself lucky. That's quite a time span!

  • IPod isn't recognized by iTunes and iTunes opens very slow!!

    Hey!
So here's my very urgent problem (go on vacation tomorrow!!!):
Everytime I click to open iTunes, it takes about 5 minutes until it opens! I have a Windows XP and have also updated iTunes to the newest software. I don't know what the problem is...
And second, my iPod doesn't connect with iTunes, it won't be recognized by iTunes! Windows recognizes it, but iTunes doesn't. I've already tried at every USB connection, but it doesn't work! Well, once it worked and I thought that was it, but the next time it didn't work anymore!
I've got a pink iPod mini (4 GB) and I dropped it some times, but the man in the Apple Support store said, it's got nothing to do with the hardware. Really?
Who can help me please - very fast??!
    Thank you!
    Chrissy

    Sorry, don't real understand! ;-))
OK, I closed all other background applications when using iTunes. But the problem is that I couldn't do the next step because iTunes always tell me: "The software required for communicating with the iPod isn't installed correctly. Please reinstall..." So I can't drag the iPod icon from my computer (and anyway: where is "my computer"??) to iTunes application (where is that one??)
But at least it's good news that nothing's wrong with the hardware (couldn't afford a new one! ;-))
Please reply soon, it would be real cool if you'd help me with further steps... and everyone else too of course! ;-D

  • 5th Gen iPod Not Being Recognized by iTunes

    5th Gen iPod w/Updater 1.3. iTunes Ver. 7.6.2.9
Two weeks ago purchased music with no problems; sync'ed library w/iPod w/no problems.
Purchased music a few days ago- no problems. Started iTunes today to sync iPod and got msg saying registry values missing for certain drivers for burning discs, etc. Cause could be from other programs that burn discs etc.(???)
Plugged in iPod, got the tone beep and then a message that iTunes doesn't recognize the iPod attached. Disconnect and reattach. Did this several times - still doesn't work. I can play tunes from my iTunes library and my iPod OK - just can't sync them up. Anyone got a solution??
    Thanks, Unicorn39

Well, after digging into the 1000's of msgs regarding problems similar to mine I found something I thought might help at (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538). I teied it and found that my drivers were OK so that wasn't the problem. While trying things I suddenly got the iPod recognized and it started sync'ing. I think the solution to my issue was to connect the iPod first; wait for it to be recognized by the pc (the tone beep) then go thru the acceptance of iTunes agreement, etc., iTunes then opened and the sync process began. I tried it with iTunes open and it won't work. It sounds like a hokey way to do it but at least I have my library and iPod in sync.
My next problem to work on is there seems to be registry problem with iTunes drivers for importing and burning CD's. Got to figure that out and fix.
Since I do have CopyTrans I may just re-install a back-level of iTunes and copy my iPod into the new iTunes library.
