HUGE 10.4.11 PROBLEM

last night i installed apples new update for tiger, 10.4.11
i installed it, and shut down my computer rather than restarting it. i started it back up this morning, and waited for it to boot up. i received a promp screen which i have never seen before, then it switched to a blue screen with a small gear spinning.
i shut down and restarted my computer mutliple times, getting no help.
i called up apple, and they walked me through some things. i installed the disks that came w/ my macbook pro, and now everything is back to normal, with one thing.
i am back to 10.4.6.
i'd rather not install 10.4.11 to my mbp again, it scared me that i did that last time.
what do you suggest i do? should i install 10.4.11 or find 10.4.10 and install that? can anyone find me a link to 10.4.10
please and thanks in advance

Problem solved.
After turning off the computer via the power button, every attempt to restart was leading to a grey apple startup screen stalling with the fans blowing at full speed.
Turned off the computer and turned back on to find the same results, while trying to restart in safe mode.
What did the trick was resetting the PRAM (3 or 4 times) and after releasing the combination keys the machine went through the startup process, login process and desktop launch.
Everything works now.
I don't know what the advice will be for future upgraders, but just be aware that there might be some unexpected issues. Keep a copy of a fresh system disc handy.

  • HUGE 2.0 software problems on both a 1st gen iPhone and new 3g TWO BRICKS

So I waited in line for several hours for the new 3G yesterday like most people get it home and it had the occasional random program crashes etc. No big deal par for the course for being first on the block with a new device - even a Apple product.
My headache started with turning my "old" 1st Gen 16gb phone into a iPod. I installed the 2.0 software through iTunes and all went well until I was testing it out and it restarted. Weird since it gave no problems before. No big deal since I could go back to iTunes and restore it right?
    Wrong.
    Dead wrong.
It will not get beyond the Apple logo restart screen (yes I left it alone - even over night). I tried different computers, restarting the computer and iTunes. Also tried reinstalling iTunes - nothing works. Okay no big deal since it just going to be my extra iPod.
EXCEPT A HOUR LATER MY 3G IPHONE STARTED DOING THE SAME THING!!!!
Now I have two 16gb iPhones that will not restart or restore - AND NO CELL PHONE SERVICE.
Very, very frustrating. Even as a huge Apple fan I can't recommend this product until it's bit more fully developed.
Now waiting for technical support for well over a hour . . . Thank god I didn't go ahead and cancel my home phone like I have been meaning to.
Any one out there have any ideas?

It looks like a 3rd party application might be the problem.
The good news is tech support got me back on track. The secret? Power down the iPhone, then press and hold down the home button while connecting it to the computer with iTunes up and running. This will get you to the recovery screen. You should be able to then restore the phone. I would say be wary of some of the applications out there.

  • Iphone 5 - anyone having huge cellular data usage problem on ATT

I upgraded from Iphone 3g to Iphone 5. Over a period of last year, My average monthly data usage is approx 400MB (total less than 5GB in a year). AT&T is reporting that my Iphone 5 data usage crossed 6GB in a 3 day period . I called AT&T and have to listen to LTE, Iphone 5 and Multiple app running in background  non-sense as an explanation for 6GB data usage over a 3 day period. My Itune and app store does not download over cellular network. Even though Iphone 5 automatically creates an Icloud account during initial setup, I am not connected to Icloud on Iphone and never even logged on to Icloud account. IOS 6 setting for sending data diagnostic over cellular network is set to no.
I feel this is same bug which Verizon user are reporting and ATT is not commenting on it till now. How can I consume over 6GB worth of data over a 3 day period which is more than my total data usage for a year. That is equivalent of streaming hd video (approx 300 MB per hour) for 20 hours.

  • HUGE Outlook Express database problems!

I had a hard drive failure. The problem is that my Outlook Express Identities folder was stored there. I recovered the Identities folder using Data Rescue and I discovered that the file called "database" is truncated.
I can do a rebuild of the database but then all several thousand emails are missing. After some trial and error, I confirmed that it is the database file that is screwed.
I can use a backup file from 10 months ago but then the last 10 months of emails are missing.
    Database - 70 MB
    Database Cache - 20 KB
    Messages - 750 MB
I think everything I want is in the larger Messages file even though I also see messages inside the Database file. (I'll never understand the MS programming philosophy)
Are there any Mac utilities that will extract the emails from these database files?
What about my damaged database file? Since it's truncated, is there anything I can splice to the end of it to fool Outlook Express into properly rebuilding it?
Can these be transferred to a PC and then repaired using one of the dozens of Winbloze utilities available for database repair and then converted back?? If so, how?
I'm stumped and I'm hoping anyone here can help.
    Thank-you.

I never had a problem with OE, but it uses the same
MS programming philosophy as entourage, where I do
know you can't get out of a truncated databse…
Sorry, and if the automatic Rebuild routines won't
    fix it, it's just gone.
    Not quite...
I was able to recover about 99.9999% of the 28,000 "lost" emails using a neat little utility called "Emailchemy".
It scours nearly any email database file in almost any condition, pulls out the messages, and then saves them ALL to a generic mbox file that ANY email program can read. It also preserves the attachments!
FYI- For Outlook Express in OS 9, the file called "Database" contains all the outgoing emails and attachments. The file called "Messages" contains all the incoming emails and attachments.
I just ran Emailchemy on both of them and imported two mbox file into Entourage for OS X. That created two folders, each containing all the messages PLUS attachments from each of the two files.
In Entourage for OS X, ALL incoming and outgoing emails plus attachments are stored in the file called "Database". For this program, there's no such thing as "Messages" file.
So anyone reading this, DO NOT delete your corrupted Microsoft email database files, lock them, back them up, and do NOT give up hope. Even if you couldn't extract the information, you can still open the file in a text editor and see your messages inside (minus the attachments, of course). As horrific as this process may sound, at least you can search for something specific if needed.

  • HUGE TRANSITION CROSS DISSOLVE PROBLEMS

Ok, I copied everything to a new project - same problem (unrelated frames in the background of a transition between 2 other clips). But now on top of that, sometimes it doesn't even create any transition at all! I have no files in Render media. People are telling me to dump preferences - what exactly does that mean? Please tell me step by step. Go into User Preference? which folder (general, editing...etc)? Do I just uncheck everything? Also, the apple8 isn't working as default transition anymore - it's just gone light grey & I have no idea how to get it back.
    Please help...
    Thanks,
    Billy

Trashing Prefereneces is done by closing FCP, then navigate to this website: http://fcprescue.andersholck.com/... nice little utiltiy to do that.
Not sure it will help, but won't hurt.
Apple 8 is a keyboard shortcut to open the log and capture window... command (apple) +T is the keyboard command to add the default transition.
Control click on the cross Dissolve in the Effects tab in the Viewer, and select "make default transition"...
Most of the time, when a transition isn't added it's because you don't have enough unused media to accomodate it. (you've edited in all the media that's available from a clip or subclip). Take off 15 frames on either side of an edit point that has this prolblem, and you should be able to add a 30 frame centered transition that way.

  • Huge Ipod nano screen problem

I have a big problem with the iPod Nano screen. It just doesn't work. I have tried reseting the ipod, restoring it but it just doesn't work.
It is not a screen problem because when I plug it on to the PC the screen lightens up with just white on it.
I could listen to the song by "blindly" selecting Shuffle. But now I can't even do that.
I would REAALY appreaciate any help.

If you can get one sent or brought down to you, you can replace it yourself It is not that hard to do, or I am sure you can find someone to do it for you. I live in Mexico and it is hard to get parts to us, there is also no repair place close, but we have people come from the states every once and awhile and they bring us parts so we can repair our own. Go on ebay and you will find screens for under 15 dollars U.S. and it comes with the tools that you will need to open your nano. Hope this helps.

  • Sync problem on iPhone4 IOS5 and iTunes 10.5: Sync service failed to start

After painful upgrade to IOS 5.0 on my iPone 4 which suffer from er 3014 unt I do full restore in other computer. Now two new problems cropped up again:
    A.
When I sync IPhone with iTunes, the sync process started and freeze at "waing f sync service to start" and for 5 minutes or so, it end up with a dialog stated that the iPhone could not be synced because sync service failed to start
To remedy, I have to click t start Sync again, and thios time, it will be completed.
To solve tjhis, I have done the following, and the probelm still persist:
    a. Reinstal,l to repair iTunes
    b. Delete the Lockup folder
    c. Reset sync history
    d. reboot iPhone
All cannot solve the problem. Help please, how to solve this problem?
Also, when I backup my iPhone, it freeze at "Backing up iPhone" fr about 10-15 minutes, then start backup, until nearly finished, then it restart backup process again by itself, and again, freezing at "Backing up iPhone" for another 5 minutes, then it start backup and complete. I check the backup time in Preferences, it's correct.
To solve this, I delete the backup, and start new backup, the process went OK. But when I start backup again, the above symptom (backing up, and restart backup again to complete) persist
I have quite a rough experiences with iTunes-iPhone-iPad sync and backup all the times. Can the sync and backup process mad better and real trouble free Apple?
Help and suggestion please. I sync iPhone and iPad2 with WIndow XP PC. iPad2 do not have problem. The problem is with iPhone4 IOS 5 32 GB (less than 2 GB free space on iPhone remains)

I have very similar problems with my brand new iPhone and iTunes.  iTunes is virtually unusable even after multiple installs, uniinstalls, and reinstalls. Sync fails silently. Drop-down menus won't stay visible long enough to click any options.   Phone-support blames it on the fact that I use Windows XP however the iTunes page says right there: "iTunes 10.5 for Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7".  The only program I have problems with is iTunes.
He said I have to revert to iOS 4 but he also said he thought that was impossible.  What does the OS on my phone have to do with the behavior of iTunes running on my computer?  iTunes crashed and had failures both before and after I updated to iOS 5.  Typical bad tech support just like every other company.  I thought Apple was different. Apple really stepped in it this time and it stinks.  I've seen a huge number of new problem reports here and elsewhere.

  • Uninstalling/reinstalling problems

    I am having trouble uninstalling/reinstalling itunes. My add/remove files list says I can not remove the program. When I try to repair or reinstall it. I get a box that pops up that says "The feature you are trying to use is on a network that is unavailable" "Click OK to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'itunes.msi' in the box below" then the choices are;
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple\Apple Software Update\
    and
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer\Installer Cache\iTunes 8.0.0.35\
I am not a very tech savy guy so any help dumbed down for me would be a huge help.
The problem arose from me trying to run itunes and this message apearing "This action is only valid for products currently installed"
The library is all still there it now has the songs as quicktime files. Thanks

In addition to having iTunes open, you must also have at least one track selected for          these features to work. Note that you must have tracks selected,           rather than playlists, albums, etc.

  • Cache problem is the limitation of 500,000 images. REMOVE

Mac Pro OSX 10.6 thru 10.9.
    I have Bridge CS6.
I have a DEDICATED HARD DRIVE for nothing except Bridge Cache.
    My problem is....
Bridge only allows for 500,000 images to be cached.
I have nearly 3 million image files.
    1. Is there a way to remove this limitation?
    If not....
    PLEASE !!!!
Provide an option in Bridge Preferences that allows this limitation to be removed.
Simply include a Dialog Warning explaining that Bridge Cache can use up huge amounts of disk space.
Warn the user that this "No Limit" option requires a Dedicated Cache Hard Drive (internal or external) otherwise there will be crashes and hangs and the potential to use up a system boot drive's space.
For those of us who have more than 500,000 images, this change (suggested Bridge Upgrade) would be extremely helpful.
Please do not make me repeat myself.
I have a DEDICATED HARD DRIVE for nothing except Bridge Cache.
This Bride Cache Hard Drive is huge.
My only problem is the limitation of 500,000 images.
    This restriction needs removal.

I understand your frustration, but then I'm not Adobe.
This is not a conduit to communicate with Adobe.  Remember, you are not addressing Adobe here in the user forums.  You are requesting help from volunteers users just like you who give their time free of charge.
Supposedly there are dedicated Adobe forums for feature requests and for reporting bugs.  I lost track of where those are, probably because posting there is as futile as posting here.
Perhaps searching the forums directory or searching the forum itself may provide you with a link.

  • AVCHD import is HUGE!

I have a Sony HDR-SR11 HD camcorder that I use for taking home movies. It has a 60 GB drive that holds 7 hours of full 1080i video. Recently, I tried to import a few videos that took less than 1/8th of the total hard drive space on the camera. But when I imported them into Final Cut (or iMovie for that matter), they balloon in size to over 100 GB total as Quicktime .mov's.
What is the software doing to the video when it imports it? It seems that just under 8 GB of data being bloated to over 100 is a HUGE (no pun intended) problem. If I was to capture 1/2 of the video on my camera, my Mac and external drives could not handle it.
Does anyone have a solution to this, or is there one?
    Message was edited by: barry_zundel

I found this in another thread, but here is how you can archive your ORIGINAL footage very easily:
    1. When you plug in your camcorder to your Mac, it will show up as a drive.
    2. Open up the drive in a finder window.
    3. Copy ALL folders from the camera to another folder on your Mac or external drive.
    4. Once that is done, open Disk Utility and go to File>Disk Image From Folder.
    5. Select the folder you saved your camera data to.
    6. Name the image file and choose where it will go.
    7. Hit Create (This takes a long time for 50 GB)
    8. Once that is done, turn off your camera.
    9. In a finder window, find your new .dmg file and double click it to mount the image.
    10. Open iMovie and click on the camera button to import clips.
    11. It should recognize the mounted .dmg file as the camera and allow you to import clips.
For me this worked like a charm, and I archived 50 GB of raw data without any problems, and I can import into iMovie easily and quickly.
I will probably be posting a screencast of this process soon. That's so much easier to follow.

  • Nested folder problems in XP via Bootcamp

I'm running Windows XP on my iMac via Bootcamp. It runs pretty much fine, with the exception of some fits over mouse/keyboard/DirectX drivers that I guess everyone is having.
However, it has one really huge annoying and flummoxing problem: if you have too many layers of subfolders, XP stops letting you drag files into the nested folder, won't open them if they're text or jpg, etc.
For example, suppose I create a "Beretta" subfolder at this level:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Kate\My Documents\Games\Particular Game\Downloads\Weapons\Handheld Weapons\Guns\Handguns\Pistols\Beretta\
XP won't let me drag any files into the "Beretta" folder without an error message saying "Cannot move file RKELLY: The file name is not valid or [is] too long. Specify a different file name." I can drag the "Beretta" folder to another location further up the tree--or to my Desktop--and drop the RKELLY file in. If I check, the RKELLY file will open fine. I can even move the "Beretta" folder back to where I wanted it, under "Pistols." But then the RKELLY file inside the folder won't open. I can't delete it or do anything else to them, either, until I move them back to my Desktop or another less-nested folder. Instead, just get a "ding" sound.
Is there some sort of limit in XP I don't know about? Or it is a BootCamp issue? I can't figure out for the life of me why this would be happening, and it's a huge pain.

Long File Names and Maximum Folder Depth
    Fat32
The FAT32 file specification from Microsoft does not specify a maximum directory depth. There is no official published NTFS file specification...however, under NTFS the directory depth is limited by the 255 character file name limit; directory depth cannot be more that.
The following is taken from Article No.: Q148754
Long file names are limited to 255 characters in Windows 95. However, the maximum path length in Windows 95 is 259 characters. The maximum path length represents the length of the file name, plus the number of characters used to represent the drive and folder where the file is located. For example, the path length for the file
    C:\Windows\LongFileName.extension
is 33 characters, but the file name is only 22 characters.
Because the path length is limited to 259 characters, a long file name is limited to less than 255 characters if more than five characters are needed to represent the drive and folder where the file is located. If five characters or less are needed to represent the drive and folder where the file is located, the long file name is limited to 255 characters, even if the total path length is less than 259 characters. For example, if a file is located in the root folder of a drive, the long file name is still limited to 255 characters, even though 256 characters could be used before the maximum path length is reached.
    NTFS
NTFS File name has a repeatable attribute for both long and short file names. The long name of the file can be up to 255 Unicode characters. The short name is the 8.3, case-insensitive name for the file. Additional names, or hard links, required by POSIX can be included as additional file name attributes.

  • Problem with my Apple Care Service

Hoping a "veteran" up here might help me through a big problem.
DVD drive is out in my G5 iMac. Tries to spin up, but eventually ejects all disks.
Did all the diagnostics, system is up to date. no disc issues, tried logging in with test account, etc. I have Apple Care.
Called them yesterday, got very helpful CSA, who, after discussing the troubleshooting I performed, said there woiuld be no problem, just call your local Apple Store to make sure they had drive in stock, and they could probably swap it out for you within an hour or so. Since this is a critical work station at my business, this was a music to my ears.
It was another world entirely when I called the Thousand Oaks, CA Apple Store.
There was no way they would swap the drive unless their techs performed all their diagnostics (which would probably include wiping the drive) and require that I leave the unit for their prerequisite time of at least a week.
I'm in a huge quandry - a simple problem now threatens me with serious, irreplaceble down time- especially when I do get the unit back with a new drive, I'll have to add another day of reinstalling all our apps.
Making it worse will be setting up another replacement machine, and havving to use network to move all files off machine. We're talking days of work for a simple problem. I could swap the drive, myself in less than a half hour. Buying a new drive out of pocket and installing it myself seems my only viable option.
    Any thoughts?
    TIA

Called Apple Care back, explained the situation. She transferred me to a Product Specialist who pretty much explained that it was Apple's guidelines that the stores had to follow. They needed to test the unit first, and then replace. It was up to the store as to how they handled it timewise. I asked if he could send me out a drive, and I could do it myself. He said that Apple considered the optical drive to be a major component, and not something like a keyboard, so couldn't do.
He gave me numbers of other shops I could try who might be able to do it faster.
BTW- he said Apple couldn't issue a repair order for this, to avoid having to not go through the testing.
I then called another shop (not Apple Store), who said that Apple required him to test the unit, then order the part, which would arrive the next day. Apple tells him to tell the customer to expect 84 hour turnaround (although I know he was prepared to do it faster). He also gave me the number of another Apple store that I could try that might have it in stock. Helpful guy.
Then, the Product Specialist called me back, apoligized that he hadn't looked at the entirety of my situation, and because of Apple Care, they would send a technician out to my business to fix the unit!

  • IPhone 6 plus space gray screen manufacturing problem

I found out that some iphone 6 plus screens aren't the same as the ones which were sold close to the launching event due to huge demand and manufacturing problems... now unfortunatly no glass screen protector fits snugly as it should...
Being more specific my iphone is one of this iphones and I am shocked apple has never informed or talked about it...
This is the messege I got from the company iloom after informing them about their glass screen protector.
    The messege:
"Okay, so this is a case that is well known to us, is this is the explanation below: Thank you for the photo verification. We've gone ahead and processed the full refund for your order. Please be advised that it may take two to ten business days, depending on your credit card company, to have the refund reflected on your statement. After our investigation, we have found that this issue affects about ~20-30% of all iPhone 6 for Space Grey ONLY. The root cause, at the moment, is believed to be from the glass manufacturer that Apple uses for iPhone 6, as they've had issues with supplying glass parts for their screens. Instead of sticking to one particular screen display manufacturers, they have used several others in order to meet demands. If you have purchased iPhone 6 Silver or Gold, the glass specification is same as others, but this is not true for iPhone 6 Space Grey. At this moment, we have to inform you that whatever tempered glass you use from iloome, it will NOT be compatible with your particular iPhone 6. I don’t want to discourage you from repurchasing, but it will have the same outcome, so I would leave it on if you want the full cover protection until we come up with a solution to this issue! (Early April) Thanks for your patience and we apologize for any inconvenience. Best regards, Brendon Iloome"

I am sure that expected date is not accurate anyway. It has changed many times for me. I was one of the ones that got up and ordered a few minutes after the pre order opened. Talked with cs and in store reps many times and all say the same thing. That expected date is only based off of all of the many pre orders coming in no matter the time you ordered it. So since there are many orders out there then that is why this date now says unavailable. All the reps that I talked to said the date that first showed up on your confirmation when you first bought the phone is the date you are going to get it. For me that is 9/19. Read a lot of posts and all many say that this happens every year when the iPhone comes out. Just hang in there till next week when the pre orders are verified.

  • Huge Cellular Data Use / Drain, While On Wi-Fi

Anyone else got this? I'm very concerned as my 8gb / month data allowance is being swallowed up, and my carrier, Vodafone, just advise it must be the handset - and charge me for extra data, and Apple so far haven't diagnosed the problem...
On my iphone 5s I'm having a huge cellular data drainage problem, seen in Settings > Cellular > System Services > Docs and Sync  and I'd be very surprised if there aren't many others with the same as it seems to me to be fundamentally linked to the iOS or the handset.
In the first 12 days of this billing month ( since Nov 22 ) my cellular data usage was nearly 8GB - my limit is 8GB and usually I use around 500mb of that. So I'm now paying Vodafone for extra data.
Spent a couple of hours online with Apple Support today  - my cellular data usage increasing from 3mb to 30mb  as we spoke  - and much of the time I was on wifi.
Result was that Apple had me restore iphone as a new phone over itunes and reinstall 8.1.1 afresh; theory being that a fresh restore ( ie none of my apps, non-Apple mail accounts, or media on the phone ) should clear anything that may be causing Settings > Cellular > System Services > Docs and Sync to show high data usage.
But with Settings > Cellular Data switched on, and no apps open or any activity on my part,  I'm seeing he exact same thing - around 45mb of data use in Settings > Cellular > System Services > Docs and Sync in less than an hour.
Feels like the phone has been hacked in some way.
    Update the following day:
I've kept the phone on the full  restore (ie not reverted to any of  my backups, as I had planned ) today - kept a record of the apps i installed and Settings changes made... the data drain has continued, so in Settings > Cellular > System Services > Docs and Sync the data use is now 108mb - and this is while being on Wifi the whole day except for around 30 mins walking to / from a restaurant.
I've seen this iPhonedata drain issue raised elsewhere on the web, dating back to 2012 - but the posts I see never update to a conclusion.
Another talk to Apple tomorrow. If anyone has had this issue and resolved it I'd really like to hear from them!

I haven't been able to solve the problem yet but I think I'm getting closer. I've noticed that the data drain stops when my iMac is turned off, and that the data drain on the iPhone starts immediately once the iMac is turned on!!
I turned off my iMac on Friday and had no data drain all weekend. As soon as I turned the iMac on today the iPhone "Documents & Sync" started to go crazy again. I logged out of iCloud on the iMac and the drain on the iPhone stopped! So, I don't think this is an iPhone hardware problem at all!
To me it seems it's a bug in the iCloud service. Although all the configurations on the iPhone are saying that it should not use 3G, and that it should use the WiFi, it still uses the 3G somehow for some sort of synchronisation with my iMac. This is clearly a bug as I don't have anything on my iCloud drive and I have set Calendar/Contacts and Notes to sync only on WiFi. Apple please sort this one out. For now I'm switching cellular data off on the phone when I'm working on the iMac. It's the only solution at the moment.

  • ITunes on external HDD via Thunderbolt 1 showing Permissions Problems

I have ITunes Media on a Pegasus R6 unit since it is large and my Macs have SSD drives which are firstly not large enough & secondly I prefer to keep most important things externally. It works fine !
But when I run Disk Utility Verifying Permissions on the SSD I get a huge amount of permissions problems they dont seem to effect the performance but there must be over 100 problems I can run Repair Permissions and although it claims to have sorted them if I VERIFY THE PERMISSIONS IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE PROBLEMS ARE STILL THERE ! I have re structured iTunes since it had a Media folder within the Media folder the problems still show.
I did not have this problem with OSX 10.8 the system seems unaffected by the permission problems but it is odd that in spite of repairing Permissions the problem continues .
I should add there does not appear to be any problems running iTunes I am a little ****** at having sent quite a lot of time remioving all the media from the disk I use for iTunes copying it to another disk and then starting afresh which also meant creating all my playlists again.
Here is a screen shot of the problems showing after Verifying permissions this is after running Repair Permissions .
I hazzard a guess that this is a Mavericks fault and is very minor but irritating.
Is there a solution I can do or will a future Mavericks update take care of this.

Yes pleAse do move it over the permissions verification shows ACLs language store settings etc none of which actually effect the performance I run disk utility either after software updates or before a weekly shutdown and it shows these faults if my Pegasus unit is attached and since I use it for photos time machine back ups etc it is connected all the time I have verified the Pegasus disks and they are fine although obviously I can not verify permissions on any of these disks .
