Hyper-V 2012 R2 Virtual machine creation date resets to 01/01/1601 after host reboot
Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V stand-alone, no cluster. I created new virtual machine. When I rebooted host, I noticed that creation date of the VM becames wrong, something of 01/01/1601.
VM creation date does not persists between Hyper-V host reboots or restarting of the VMM service.
Yes, there's a known bug. While the VM is running, hit the stop service button (or net stop vmms from the command line) and restart it (or net start vmms from the command line).

How to Install Hyper-V on a Virtual Machine in Hyper-V on windows 2erver 2012 R2 ?
Hi ,
anybody know How to Install Hyper-V on a Virtual Machine in Hyper-V on windows 2erver 2012 R2 ?
I want to create lab but i couldn't I follow this article but the new VM is off
http://blogs.technet.com/b/gbanin/archive/2013/06/26/how-to-install-hyper-v-on-a-virtual-machine-in-hyper-v.aspx
one of hyper-v component is not running
thanksPreviously it has been blocked to install Windows Server in the VM and then add the Hyper-V Role.
However, it has always been possible to install Hyper-V Server inside a VM. (the free Hyper-V Server SKU)
The Hyper-V Server VM is fully manageable, but it cannot start any VMs.

I just applied update:
Update Rollup 3 for Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 - Virtual Machine Manager (KB2965413)
and (KB2965414) but it failed to install.
After a reboot I could not login to the VMM and the service would not start
An event id 0 was reported with:

After I removed the update the VMM was able to start, no reboot required.
When I have time I will try to apply both updates again successfully and see if the issue still occurs.
Vista Ultimate Dell XPS M1330FYI. I've had the same issue after I installed Update Rollup 3 (KB2965413), seeing the exact same error on event log. Tried to start the service manually, getting service unable to start error. This is a machine running
with Windows Server 2012 Standard. Solution for me is simple. I just install
KB2965414 (Update Rollup 3 for SCVMM 2012 R2), reboot the server, and the SCVMM service auto start up by itself. -
Backing up Windows Server 2012 R2 Virtual Machine
When I try to back my Windows Server 2012 R2 Virtual machine up to a NAS, using the Windows Server Utility I get the following errors:
There was a failure in preparing the backup image in one of the volumes in the backup set.
Detailed error: The process can not access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file.
When viewing the errors in Event viewer I get the following error:
The backup operation that started at '2014-03-12T10:23:08.681735200Z' has failed with following error code '0x807800C5' (There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set.). Please review the event details for
a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.
Any help will be appreciated.

Hyper V Virtual Machine Creation
While we try creating a new virtual machine for our windows phone application, we are facing the following error.
-Failed to add device 'Virtual Hard disk
-Hyper V virtual machine management service account does not have permission to open attachment.
ERROR: General access denied error(0x80070005)Unblock whatever it is that you downloaded.
Check that your antivirus software is set with the proper exclusions.
I don't recall anyone reporting this error before - as the installer for the phone emulator generally takes care of the machine creation and permissions.
I can only guess that you are attempting to duplicate the phone emulator VM. If so, use Export and Import.

Windows Update fails on Server 2012 R2 Virtual Machine
I have set up a virtual network with two virtual machines. The first VM is Server 2008 R2 and is set up as a domain controller. The second VM is Server 2012 R2, and has been joined to the domain. The DC (TestVM1) is also set up as a DNS server.
From TestVM2 (Server 2012 R2), I am able to log in using a domain login, and I am able to browse to a public website.
I was able to run Windows Updates from TestVM1, but when I attempt to run Windows Updates from TestVM2, it fails.
The Windows Update client shows "Error(s) found:" and "Code 8024402F".

This is blocking further work. Assistance would be greatly appreciated.I am having the exact same issue. Fresh build of Server 2012 R2 from the Microsoft Volume Licensing ISO. I tried before and after joining to the domain. Same error every time. Firewall is turned off. No AV. We do have a cloud proxy service, but I bypassed
that as a test and got the same error message. I also tried to stop wuauserv and cleaning out the folder and starting it back up. No joy as well. This is a VM server running on ESXi 5.1. Server 2008 servers dont seem to have
an issue. Server 2012 server don't seem to have an issue. Only this new Server 2012 R2 server. My logs are below:

Server 2012 cluster - virtual machine live migration does not work
Hi,
We have a hyper-v cluster with two nodes running Windows Server 2012. All the configurations are identical.
When I try to make a Live migration from one node to the other I get an error message saying:
Live migration of 'Virtual Machine XXXXXX' failed.
I get no other error messages, not even in event viewer. This same happens with all of our virtual machines.
A normal Quick migration works just fine for all of the virtual machines, so network configuration should not be an issue.
The above error message does not provide much information.Hi,
Please check whether your configuration meet live migration requirement:
Two (or more) servers running Hyper-V that:
Support hardware virtualization.
Yes they support virtualization.
Are using processors from the same manufacturer (for example, all AMD or all Intel).
Both Servers are identical and brand new Fujitsu-Siemens RX300S7 with the same kind of processor (Xeon E5-2620).
Belong to either the same Active Directory domain, or to domains that trust each other.
Both nodes are in the same domain.
Virtual machines must be configured to use virtual hard disks or virtual Fibre Channel disks (no physical disks).
All of the vitual machines have virtual hard disks.
Use of a private network is recommended for live migration network traffic.
Have tried this, but does not help.
Requirements for live migration in a cluster:
Windows Failover Clustering is enabled and configured.
Yes
Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) storage in the cluster is enabled.
Yes
Requirements for live migration using shared storage:
All files that comprise a virtual machine (for example, virtual hard disks, snapshots, and configuration) are stored on an SMB share. They are all on the same CSV
Permissions on the SMB share have been configured to grant access to the computer accounts of all servers running Hyper-V.
Requirements for live migration with no shared infrastructure:
No extra requirements exist.
Also please refer to this article to check whether you have finished all preparation works for live migration:

DPM 2012 R2 Virtual machine - can you backup to disk then to TAPE
I'm tasked with using DPM 2012 R2 to backup a 16 node 2012 R2 hyper-v CSV cluster. I will need to incorporate tapes in this scenario
my DPM server is a virtual machine, on a 2 node cluster.
what type of tape device can we use? FC or ISCSI?
Any ideas please let me know
ANNCEXAFAIK, DPM being deployed as a virtual machine should
work fine with ISCSI device. If the given device doesn't have ISCSI capability, you can utilize
certain 3-party tool in order to make device visible via ISCSI protocol. We're using similar approach with Veeam in our environment.

ODBC Problems with SQL Server 2012 on Virtual Machine
I am having problem with my application after my IT department upgraded to SQL Server 2012 with error "ConngetDataToModify.vi:1"<ERR>Object 0x2222222 is not valid. I have 4 servers running the same executable without problem before the upgraded. However, after the upgrade 2 of these Server are having the problem with the ODBC connection. Here are my setup, the application was created using LabView8.5, we have 2 physical server box running Window Server 2003, 2 Virtual Machine on Windows Server 2008, and a Virtual Machine with SQL 2012 Server. The 2 physical server running the executable without a problem after the upgrade, but the 2 Virtual Server were unable to connects to the ODBC connection. Anyone have any idea why this is happening , it is the problem with compatibility between my application with Server 2008 and SQL 2012 Server, or is there a problem with both beings Virtual Servers? As I said, the 2 physical Server seem to be running without any problem with the upgrade.
My guess is that the problem is not specifically with LV. This should be relatively easy to check if you create a UDL file and double click it. This opens a Microsoft wizard which allows you to configure and test DB connections (the UDL file itself is basically just a text file which holds a connection string). If it doesn't work there, it won't work in LV.
As for what the actual problem is, a common culprit is the firewall, which is easy enough to check by disabling it. Another option is the surface area configuration of SQL Server, which will not allow network connections unless you tell it to.
It should probably also be noted that LV 8.5 is not officially supported on Windows Server. I'm assuming that's not the issue, but be aware of it.

SCOM 2012 RC - SCVMM 2012 RC - Virtual machine manager management group is not getting monitored
Hi All,
I have integrated SCOM 2012 with SCVMM 2012 environment. I could see two strange behaviors. All these instance are running on Windows 2008 R2 + Sp1 OS along with SQL 2008 R2 for database.
1) I could see two instance of VirtualmanagerDB
in the Database State view under the Microsoft SQL Server, out of that
one is showing as monitored and another one is
showing as not monitored. Why it is showing two instance of the same database? How can I remove the not monitored one?
2) In the distributed apps- Virtual machine manager management group is not showing as a monitored item. However the SCVMM server is getting monitored.
I'd appreciate if someone could help me out in understanding and resolving this.
Regards,
Ren.Hi
I opened up a connect ticket on this on 17th Jan so sorry for not noticing your post earlier. The response was:
Health State dashboard view is targeted to two state views. "Agent Watcher State" and "Agent State". "Agent State" view (view with duplicate entry) is targeted to an abstract class "VMM Agent" which has below child classes.
VMM Library Agent
VMM Host Agent
Guest Agent
For the Dashboard view, we need to taget the view to "Host Agent" not "VMM Agent". When we install VMM, it adds itself as a Library server and that is the reason for duplicate entry (VMM Library Agent).
Cheers
Graham

WIN2008R2: No external network access from Hyper-V guest using Virtual Machine Bus - Legacy ok
Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise x64 Hyper-V host
HP DL370 G6, HP NC375i integrated Quad Port Multifunction Gigabit Server Adapter
Static IP (.11), internet connection via a Cisco switch and PIX firewall
External virtual network connected to port 1, allowing management OS to share the network adapter
Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise x64 guest
Static IP (.21) on the same subnet, same subnet mask and default gateway (.1) as host
* with Virtual Machine Bus network adapter:
- host can ping guest (.21), switch (.5), and has internet access
- guest can ping host (.11), but cannot ping switch (.5) and has no internet access.
- network map shows the guest and host connected via a hub (Microsoft virtual switch), connected to a gateway, then a red X between gateway and internet
* with Legacy network adapter:
- host can ping guest (.21), switch (.5), and has internet access
- guest can ping host (.11), switch (.5) and has internet access.
- network map shows the guest and host connected via a hub (Microsoft virtual switch), connected to a gateway, and no red X between gateway and internet
I installed Hyper-V before adding the HP network drivers (there's a known problem if you install Hyper-V after adding the network drivers), so that's not it.
This happens both with straight network adapters, and also when two are configured as a network team - no difference.
I don't want to use the Legacy network adapter as the performance is terrible, but right now I have no choice as otherwise I can't get network or internet access from the guest.
Any ideas?Hi,
Please refer to the following post to see whether you can resolve the issue.
Network Adapter (not Legacy) does not work on Virtual Machine after installation through ISO
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsserver2008r2virtualization/thread/b1e9d24c-e298-472e-ad72-90cf079f6fbd
By the way, did you only encounter this issue with one VM or all VMs? Please do the same test on VMs with other version of Windows such as Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2003.

Virtual machine performance data
Hi,
I have a cloud service in our lab environment. In that , i have one virtual machine and one web role. When i access that Virtual machine from azure console, i would see the dashboard and monitor tab. In that page, when i access that monitor tab , have measures
like grpah for cpu, memory, disk and network related metrics (attached screenshot1). I want to know
1) where or which location these data's are stored. How these data's are displayed in graph..
2) I am using the below link (REST API) to collect these details. But i didnt get the last five min data
http://convective.wordpress.com/2014/06/22/using-azure-monitoring-service-with-azure-virtual-machines/Hi;
Thank you for your post.
The data is stored in an Counter (Internal Data Base Table). The display works very similarly to what you would see on a OS resource monitor.
The data is refreshed every 5 min hence you might have noticed a lag.

Hyper-v Virtual machine creation as part of MDT task sequence
Hello,
I have an existing MDT 2013 environment where I deploy Server 2008 R2 core with Hyper V role to HP Microservers.
The next step is to use hyper v manager and remotely configure the network and build VMs.
I would like to try and bring this together, and am sure I have seen similar powershell scripts online, but have not been able to find them despite an afternoon/evening of searching.
Ideally what I would like to happen is run a powershell script as part of MDT task to do the following.
1) create switch on hyper v host
2) build two VMs with fixed hard discs
3) VMs to automatically start and either PXE boot, which will connect to my existing automated MDT environment, or load the MDT iso image to initiate OS install.
Is anyone aware of existing scripts which can do this?
Or have any links which could help me achieve this?
Please note i am only using server 2008 r2 OS at present.
Many ThanksBasically this has a little to nothing to do with MDT.
It's more about having the powershell scripts to do it, here's a good start:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/heyscriptingguy/archive/2013/10/16/powertip-create-a-virtual-switch-in-hyper-v-with-windows-powershell.aspx
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/jj933287.aspx
Once you have the script's tested and working, you can try to incorporate them into your MDT task sequence. Just add an "Run PowerShell Script" and refer to the script as: %DeployRoot%\Applications\Name Of Script\createVM.ps1 or something like that.
Good luck!
If this post is helpful please click "Mark for answer", thanks! Kind regards -
Hyper-V 2012 VHDX Fixed Disk creation
I know there is a tool that creates Fixed Size VHD's quickly but I was wondering if there was a tool for creating VHDX quickly. I wanted to create a 5TB VHDX Disk but after several hours its only a small percentage of the way finished. I'd rather
do fixed than dynamic but I'll do dynamic if it means I don't have to let it run for 48 hrs.
Vincent SpragueIn this case "higher performance" is actually very high performance.
The numbers that I have seen really show no benefit of using a fixed VHDX over the standard VHDX due to the enhancements all the way up the storage and file system stack in Server 2012. 4k blocks, growing in larger chunks, trim, etc.
The numbers show extremely close to native I/O performance. It is only in very high I/O VMs that I would ever think of doing fixed virtual disks any longer.
But, to answer your question: No, there is currently no built in way nor third party tool (that i have heard of) that will do what you are looking for.
