Hyperlinks from PDF to CHM

Hallo, it's me again,
In this post I lamented the problems I had linking from CHM to PDF and said that I expected no problems the other way. Famous last words, it seems.
I wish to create a link in FrameMaker which will allow the user to click in the PDF and open a particular Topic inside a CHM file.
On a command line I can type hh MyHelp.chm::/MyTopic.htm#MyBookmark and get the result I need, but I have not been able to create such a link in a PDF.
The best I can mange is a Marker of type Hypertext with the text "message openfile MyHelp.chm", but this opens the CHM on its default home page. I have been unable to persuad it to go to a given topic, let alone a bookmark.
Anybody able to help?
--- Derek

I have made a dent in the problem, can't say I've cracked it yet.
RoboWizard has a page describing the use of HTML Help Shortcuts which is got me started (thanks Rick, if you'll post here I'll give you a "Helpful Answer").
The procedure I now use is, in RoboHelp: Insert > HTML Help Controls > Shortcut. I fill in second part of the wizard like this:
so that it calles Acrobat to display the PDF (full path given), with parameters to search for a string "bookmark_2".
Then in the PDF I add a comment using Comments > Tools > Highlight and edit its properties like this:
When I compile the CHM and click the link, Acrobat opens and searches for the string. I made sure it was unique so the user is brought to the correct place.
Now it's a bit clumsy since you have to add the bookmark manually after creating the PDF from Frame, but it does work.
The other problem is that the HTML Control is not editable except in RoboHelp's HTML view. You can edit it in Design view but the edit doesn't stick. In HTML view the link details are present three times and you have to edit them all.
Anybody have bright ideas to streamline this process?

    Instead of cross-posting unformatted code you could have taken a look at the API, because there you might have come across a method named getLinks...Even though it's not documented, I really suspect that it will return the Hyperlinks on a given page.

  • Opening Hyperlinks from PDF in a new browser Window

    We have a web based (ASP.NET) tool to author HTML content. Authors can create/edit HTML content, preview, and save the file as PDF. A 3rd party component- abcpdf is used to convert HTML into PDF. The converted PDF form will be distributed to consumers.
    The PDF typically contains Hyperlinks, text boxes and submit button.
    Clicking the hyper link in PDF should open the HTML in a new browser instance. It should not hijack (overwrite or reuse) existing browser instance that may be active in users computer irrespective of browser setting. Changing the browser setting IE: Internet Option > Advanced > Reuse windows for launching shortcuts is not acceptable by users.
    Please let us know the solution if any

    Hi Sarah ,
    You can right click on the link and choose properties and then in the actions tab you can select the desired action you want .
    You will get a list of various actions specifying how and where do you want to open that link.
    Try this and let us know how it goes.

  • Text Hyperlink from PDF (converted Word doc) to specific Excel cell in same Portfolio

    Good Morning,
    I have created a Word document with an embedded Excel sheet (both Office 2007) and created a text hyperlink within the document that points to a specific cell on a specific tab. My company wants to send our document to a customer, but will only send PDFs. When converting to PDF the hyperlink does not work any longer.
    To make the behaviour in Word one must open the embedded Excel object to the specific sheet and then copy the specific cell in question. In Word choose Paste as Hyperlink. Press Alt+F9 and then change HYPERLINK to hyperLINK. Press Alt+F9. Edit the Settings of the Hyperlink and change the Text to Display.
    Is there a way to do this with Acrobat 10? The plus side would be that the Excel document would not be embedded in Word although it would still need the Document ID of the Excel file in the portfolio. Futhermore, the Word document won't be included in the portfolio.

    While Acrobat cannot pass opening parameters to non-PDF files it can do so for PDF (under specific circumstances).
    See the "Parameters for Opening PDF Files" document at:

  • Hyperlink from pdf

    create a hyperlink in a pdf file

    Yes, the problem is that ID generates a link to a web page, but the web
    page has a file:// URL (instead of an http:// URL). What's needed,
    apparently, is a straight link to a file, which is maybe not even a URL,
    just a file path, I'm not sure. The link that I finally got to work in
    Acrobat doesn't show anything when you hover the cursor above it, so I'm
    not really sure what it would look like in ID before exporting. If you
    edit it in Acrobat it shows an absolute file path. But if you move
    everything to a new folder and edit it again, it shows the new absolute
    file path, so I'm even more confused about how I would spell out the
    link in ID before exporting.
    Thanks for putting in the time on this.

  • How to keep hyperlink from excel to PDF?

    I have some Hyperlinks in excel, and when i convert to PDF, they dont work.
    I already installed the Adobe Acrobat PRO XI (Trial version)
    How can i do this?
    tks

    Step 1. Install PDF Editor
    1) Download PDF Editor and install this software by double clicking the exe file. During the installation, please follow installation message and choose the right option according to your needs.
    2) Once the installation finishes, there will be an icon on the desktop. Please launch this software by double clicking the icon.
    Step 2. Remove Hyperlinks from PDF
    1) The following snapshot is from the software interface. Please click option Open to add PDF file to software interface. Or you can simply drag PDF file to software interface.
    2) Please find option Edit Link then click it. The mouse will turn to cross. Please drag area around the picture which will lead you to website.
    3) Then there will be red rectangle frame around it. Right click the red frame and choose Property in the dropdown list. Then you will see the dialogue box like I showed in the left named Link Properties. Here you can set link actions, like open a page in a document, open a file or open a website file. Those options are useful when you need to add hyperlinks. Meanwhile it is helpful when you need to remove hyperlinks.
    4) If there is link on the image, the link will be shown on the Property tab. Please simply remove it here and then click button OK to back to the main interface.
    5) By this way, the link will be removed successfully.

  • Hyperlinks from CHM to PDF

    Our documentation comprises On-line Help as CHM files, and User Guides as PDF. Up to now the user guides were printed but we wish to provide them as PDF for on-screen use.
    Now we also wish to have hyperlinks from CHM to PDF and vice versa. We can presumably (I haven't yet tested this) handle PDF-to-CHM using the context-sensitive help functionality, but when we make links from CHM-to-PDF we are unable to go to a specified location in the PDF.
    The calls we use are of the type:
    <a href='SomeDocument.pdf#page=10'>
    <a href='SomeDocument.pdf#G1025448'>
    <a href='SomeDocument.pdf#nameddest=SomeChapter'>
    and they work in the preview window but not from CHM; the PDF opens on page 1 rather than at the specified page or marker.
    I had some success embedding the PDF call in a batch file and calling that, but that will be unmaintainable.
    We use RoboHelp 8 and FrameMaker 7.1. Would updating to TCS2 (ie Frame 9) help us? From what I could find on Adobe.com TCS allows importing from Frame but we do not want to import, just to cross-refer, preferably with links which can be updated automatically.
    Anybody who can advise us?

  • Hyperlinks from placed PDF

    Hi
    Is there any ways to pick up hyperlinks from placed PDFand convert them to InDesign hyperlinks (or buttons)?
    Of course there´s no native text in placed PDF but converted hyperlinks could be for instance rectangles on the top of the original hyperlink.

    Importing PDF pages
    Using the Place command, you can specify which pages you want to import from a multipage PDF: You can place a single page, a range of pages, or all pages. Multipage PDF files let designers combine illustrations for a publication into a single file.
    The page range options appear when you select Show Import Options in the Place dialog box. The dialog box includes a preview, so you can view a thumbnail of the pages before you place them. As you place each page, InDesign reloads the graphics icon with the next page, letting you place the pages one after the next.
    i InDesign doesnt import movies, sound, links, or buttons when you place a PDF file.

  • Remove a hyperlink from a PDF

    Hi. I need to remove a hyperlink from a PDF in Acrobat Pro 9. When I googled this, the answers all referred to editing a 'box around the link', which I can’t see. does anyone know how I can make the box visible?

    Acrobat - - Standard or Pro - - any version provides the Link tool.
    With Acrobat 9 Pro you can access this tool by opening the Advanced Editing toobar.
    Select the Link tool icon.
    Now any Link annotation on any of the PDF's pages will display as a rectangle.
    Select the desired link annotation / annotations.
    Press the Delete key on the keyboard.
    The link annotations are deleted.
    Do a File :: Save As on the open PDF.

  • Hyperlinks missing from PDF when using Adobe Printer.

    Hi,
    I am not sure if this is in the correct spot or not. I have a group of users that are ALL experiencing the same problem. When they generate the PDF of their work using the Adobe Printer, ALL of the Hyperlinks in the document are gone (the text remains). This has been working up until August 20th of 2014. They are using Word 2010, and Framemaker 9 to create the source, and Acrobat Professional 8 for the generation of the PDF. I have used Libre Office Write to test it with and I get the same result, however if I go in to Acrobat and create a document and add a hyperlink it will work.
    Anyone have any thoughts as to what is wrong?
    Thanks
    --Mike

    Let us get a few items out of the way first.  How and what does the PDF generation:
    - The Adobe PDF Printer doesn't generate links EXCEPT in a very special case where the PostScript file has special markup embedded in it called PDFMARK.
    - Both Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader have a preference that will read the text of a PDF file and dynamically create hyperlinks from that text that are clickable. This preference can also be turned off.  Check it to make sure that for some silly reason this hasn't happened on your users machines.
    - Microsoft Word has a Ribbon at the top called "Acrobat".  Use this Ribbon and the Create PDF button in it to create PDF files with hyperlinks
    - Microsoft Word also has the option of Saving as PDF with a Microsoft Addin that has nothing to do with Adobe.  It's somewhat functional in the hyperlinks department but Acrobat's Ribbon is much more fully featured.
    - FrameMaker is a bit different because it actually uses that special markup language I mentioned previously called PDFMARK and then runs it through the Adobe Acrobat PDF Add-on (a.k.a Adobe Acrobat Distiller).
    - Libre Office uses it's own mechanisms to create PDF if I remember correctly.
    My Thoughts:
    Figure out what process your users have been using if it is not a documented process.  Document that process.  Train your users as they come to the job on exactly how you want the PDF files generated.

  • How do I generate PDF and CHM files from the a command line in windows?

    I am trying to set up a PC to build some documents during the night. I was looking for a way to get framemaker to generate PDF and CHM files via a command line in windows? How is this done with FrameMaker 12
    Thanks for the help
    Alex

    Hi,
    The part with generate a PDF via a jsx seems to work OK, except when FrameMaker decides that it will not work anymore. I must say I am not impressed with the stabillity of FrameMaker 12, there is room for a lot of improvement!.
    I have given up on how to figure out how to get FrameMaker 12 to generate chm files via jsx scripts, any pointes are still very welcome.
    The route I have taken is I make a RoboHelp project for each chm files I need to generate. The only thing this RoboHelp project contains is a link to the actual FrameMaker project I want to generate a chm file.
    To make the chm I start RoboHelp with a script that
    1) Opens the desired project
    2) Sets the desired output chm files name
    3) Generates the chm file
    4) And finally quits RoboHelp
    Below is a copy of the jsx in case anyone can reuse anything.  And yes parameters are transfered via enviroments variable. I have later learned there is some way to read the parameters given at a command line but this seems to work so I stick to this for now.
    // Get parameters
    var RhProjName = $.getenv("RH_PROJ_NAME");
    var RhChmName = $.getenv("RH_CHM_NAME");
    var RhLogFileName = $.getenv("RH_LOGFILE_NAME");
    var RhLogFile = new File(RhLogFileName);
    RhLogFile.open("w", "TEXT");
    RhLogFile.writeln("RH_PROJ_NAME : ", RhProjName);
    RhLogFile.writeln("RH_CHM_NAME : ", RhChmName);
    doc = RoboHelp.openProject (RhProjName, 1);
    var sslmngr = RoboHelp.project.SSLManager;
    for(var i = 1; i<=sslmngr.count; i++){
      var ssl = sslmngr.item(i);
      if(ssl.name == 'Microsoft HTML Help') {
        // Set the output location and file name
        ssl.setSpecificProperty("DestinationProjectName", RhChmName);
        if (doc.saveAll(true) ) {
          RhLogFile.writeln("saveAll returned TRUE");
        } else {
          RhLogFile.writeln("saveAll returned FALSE");
        if ( ssl.generate() ) {
          RhLogFile.writeln("ssl.generate returned TRUE");
        } else {
          RhLogFile.writeln("ssl.generate returned FALSE");
      } else {
        // alert ("Found " + ssl.name + " dont do anything");
    doc.saveAll(true);
    RhLogFile.close();
    RoboHelp.closeProject();
    RoboHelp.quit();

  • Setting Hyperlinks in PDF Portfolio

    Hi all,
    I have the following question concering Acrobat Portfolios in Verion X on Windows:
    The Portfolio is used for large summaries with lots of documents and folders. I need to set hyperlinks from one document to another, which basically works, but I cannot set the hyperlink to a document in a different folder structure inside the Portfolio.
    Am I missing something or does it not work.
    Thanks for replies in advance
    mannikaltz

    Moving PDFs to a portfolio changes the directory structure between the PDFs, so you have to manually edit all of the links between the files within the portfolio.
