I tried to update my iphone 4s to the ios5.0.1 and it erased everything and now it says i do not have a backup!
Hi, I just tried to update my 4s to the new 5.0.1 update and after it was done my phone went into recovery mode. Everything was erased and I had a backup in icloud and my computer but they are not showing up at all. Can someone help me?!

Also, check your hosts file to verify that it's not blocking iTunes from communicating with the update server. See the steps under the heading "Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > Mac OS X > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store." If you have software used to perform unauthorized modifications to the iOS device, uninstall this software prior to editing the hosts file to prevent that software from automatically modifying the hosts file again on restart.

If you are implying that you've never synced and backed up the device, well that is simply not smart.
User's can backup their iOS devices at any time by connecting to iTunes and selecting the backup option from the Summary tab or by backing up to iCloud.
Most people will regularly backup their devices and transfer iTunes purchases to iTunes on the computer for safekeeping.
Basically, you are stating that the device has not been used as designed and now data has been lost. Sorry, that's just too bad. But at least now you know how to prevent this in the future. -
I just went to update my iPhone 5S as it asked me to, and it got to the point with the apple logo on the screen and the black loading bar underneath, but then the screen went black and the phone now won't turn on? I went to plug it into my computer and it said "USB Device not recognised"..

All iTunes content that was on your iPhone should be in your iTunes library on your computer. If so, you can re-transfer the content to the iPhone via the iTunes sync process. -

You are in Recovery Mode.
You need to connect to iTunes and restore.

If you haven't been able to connect to the iTunes Store:
Make sure your date, time, and time zone are correct in Settings > General > Date & Time.
Note: Time Zone may list another city in your time zone.
Make sure that your iOS software is up to date by tapping Settings > General > Software Update (iOS 5 or later) or connecting your iOS device to iTunes and clicking Check for Update on your device's Summary page.
Check and verify that you're in range of a Wi-Fi router or base station. If you're on a device with cellular service, make sure that cellular data is turned on from Settings > General > Cellular.
Note: If connected to cellular data, larger items may not download. You may need to connect to Wi-Fi to download apps, videos, and podcasts.
Make sure that you have an active Internet connection. You can check the user guide for your device for help with connecting to the Internet.

Updating my Iphone 4 then it said error 1604 and now keeps saying that when i try to restore it
is there anything i can do or do i have to take it to apple?
I had exactly the same problem. It happened today after I upgraded to Lion and the latest version of iTunes.
Then I did some search on the net and got a solution and was able to restore.
What you need to do is, connect your iphone to a different USB port on your system, make sure it isn't connected through a USB hub, only connect directly. If that doesn't work change the USB cable you are using and try again.

You need iTunes 10.0 or greater to update your phone...iTunes isn't confused at all. If you're on a Mac, you'll need OS X 10.5.8 or greater to update iTunes to 10.0 or greater.

I tried to update my iPhone 4s to the ios 6 and it wouldn't download and my phone will not work. I started the download and it said that it had 6 hours remaining, so i just left it overnight. The next morning it was working fine, but the ios 6 didn't download. I looked at it later and it had the turning on screen with the loading bar under it. It stayed like that for a while and the bar didn't move. I needed to use my phone so I tried to make it go to the home screen, but nothing happened. I held down the lock and home button for a few seconds and everything went black. I tried to turn it back on and all it has done all day is stayed on the turning on screen. I tried plugging it into the wall, and nothing happened. I tried connecting it to iTunes, and nothing happened. I don't know what I need to do to get it to work.

When jailbroken, you cannot update the iOS on your device. The only way to fix it is to do a full restore through iTunes. Before you do this make sure you backup your device and everything on it.

iOS updates can take a while, try back in an hour or so. My iPad took half an hour for an incremental update. And that was on a fast home WiFi.
