IMAP Mac Email disappearing & Reappearing

I am on OSX 10.8.3 using Mac Mail 6.3. I have made sure allof my siftware is up to date. I set up my email to use IMAP not POP. It has been working great for a while but now my email disappears and reappears. I had like 50 unread messages and now it says I have eight. I checked my mail server and I have 50 on the server. Also, even though my email says I have 8 unread, when I go to my inbox, it is empty. Then, all of a sudden, they will reappear. I have run the synchornize command and according to the Activity screen it just runs and runs. So then after they reappear, I can read my emails, etc. like normal. Then all of a sudden it starts all over again.
Any thoughts/ideas as to why I am seeing this weird behavior?
Thanks,
Clay

What sort of regular maintenance? No such maintenance is required. You don't have any of that "clean up" software do you?
I wrote a little diagnostic program to help show what might be causing these problems. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/download/EtreCheck.zip, run it, and paste the results here.

  • Syncing IMAP.mac email/ical/contacts across 3 computers - HELP PLEASE

I swear and promise to all of you - I have faithfully combed these discussions for several days now and tried a number of different things - and no can get/find the right answer... tried posting before & didn't help ---
    1) have IMAP .mac account - only email I use - and its IMAP everywhere - no POP
    2) have iMac G4 at home, eMac at school, and macbook laptop - eMac is only one not running Tiger yet but it's at 10.3.9....
    3) I have 2 projects and 3 different classes of students going that all talk to me via email - and I need the same contacts, emails and calendar info on all three machines...
    4) I first set up 16 mailboxes LOCALLY ON MY MAIN IMAC G4 COMPUTER, with rules configured for each - main rule is mostly - if sender is a member of group "A" (for example) move the message to group "A" mailbox.... Needless to say - I have these different member groups configured in my addressbook.... Also in a few there are more rules like "if subject line contains this key word - move it to this mailbox" etc....
    5) I then set up the EXACT SAME mailboxes and rules ON THE .MAC SERVER (meaning on the giant cyberspace mailbox in the sky where everything is supposed to go)
to repeat - I have 16 mailboxes under the little "on my mac icon," and the exact same 16 mailboxes under the little earth globe icon on the server - the .mac icon.... and I did it from scratch - I didn't drag anything down to copy it - it's all original, set up each one and chose the pull down menu bar "set up on server" when it asked "where do you want this mailbox stored."
SOOoooo - when I open mail I have 32 little mailboxes down the side of my mail window........Everybody with me?
    6) I then configured the rules to ALSO say - if sender is a member of group A - MOVE message to this group A mailbox stored locally on the computer, then ADDED THE RULE - if sender is member of group A - COPY same message to group A mailbox ON THE SERVER....
ok. I get mail - sometimes correctly, sometimes not... Sometimes the mail I get on a local mailbox doesn't always seem to copy to the same mailbox stored on the server.... Sometimes I don't get the little number flag on the side (the one that says you have 1 message unread etc)- occasionally a piece of mail just shows up in a mailbox without saying its there... Its just weird where things are showing up....
obviously - I'm on the wrong track here....
    suggestions?
    so.
    WHAT HAPPENS ---
IF I ONLY HAVE MAILBOXES SET UP **LOCALLY** ON EACH COMPUTER?
can I see them on all? answer them on all? what happens if I delete a message on one computer - is it still on the other two?
    or conversely ---
WHAT IF I ONLY HAVE MAILBOXES ON THE SERVER, none on the local computer?
can I see them all on all three? answer them all on all three? what happens if I delete a message on one computer - is it still on the other two?
ANNNNDDD - THE "SENT" MESSAGES - how do they show up - I often need to backtrack and find info [or remember what I told someone] in a sent message - is there anyway to see my "sent" messages on all three?
Am I out of my mind? Will I be excommunicated forever from the discussions for the length of this post?
FINALLY - (for you blessed blessed persons who might actually have stuck with me thus far) this question is also another aspect of the above --- when I try to SYNC my computers - I keep getting a message that the synchronization is failing, something didn't log on....
So, basically, nothing between the 3 computers is syncing correctly - and I have crucial info in address book, calendar and email I need on all three....
Getting divorced was less easier than this, I swear to God...
Oh please, please please please, I hope someone can help.... Classes start in two days, and so far I have been unable to prep effectively because this hath driven me mad, mad - I tell you, mad mad mad....
Thanks be to these discussions and the selfless, dedicated people who answer.... If I still have valid soul, it is only because of you guys....
    my deep gratitude....

Huh? What are you talking about? What's patronizing about my post? I just pointed out what you seemed to be missing. What's wrong about telling you where is the information that you were missing? How was I supposed to know whether you had read articles that you hadn't mentioned when some of your questions are clearly answered there? And even if I knew you had read them, what's wrong about telling you what you were missing there?
If it's the last sentence that you have a problem with, it seems to me that you missed the smiley at the end. Your post was very long and confusing. Thoroughly reading and understanding it all requires way more effort than usual. My last sentence was just an humorous comment about the fact that I couldn't deal with all of it and I might have missed something.
An answer like this makes me hesitant to post again
Well, at this point, I don't care at all whether you post again or not. I can tell you for sure that I'll never, ever, answer a post from you again, so if that's what you're concerned with, you don't have to worry about that possibility at all...
You might consider trying to check your ego
It seems to me that it's someone else who needs to check his/her ego...

  • GoDaddy IMAP automatically deleting/disappearing emails from Inbox, solved!

We're running a unibody Macbook 13" with Mac OS X 10.5.8, all patches, and Apple Mail 3.6.
When we moved from Earthlink POP to GoDaddy IMAP, we almost immediately started losing emails from the Inbox.  They would literally disappear before our eyes.
We checked online, found others with the same problem, and no actual fixes (some workarounds, such as switching to GoDaddy Exchange email).
I called GoDaddy for help today.  Aside from the usual run-down: Are you sure it isn't configured as POP?  Did you check that any other devices aren't getting the emails as POP?, we finally got a new solution I hadn't heard before:
    Turn off Auto Purging.
If you log into GoDaddy Webmail, right-click on the Inbox, and click Auto-Purging, a little setting pane comes up.
If Auto Purging is already turned off, turn it off again anyway, and make sure the little pop-up confirming the setting has been saved comes up in the bottom right corner.
This seems to have fixed the problem.  We've gone for about an hour now without the emails disappearing.
What's more, I got lucky and found that the emails had been thrown into the Trash by the Auto Purge feature, so I could retrieve them (some of them disappeared before Time Machine could back them up).
One important possibility:  I discovered that I had mapped the Trash folder to Deleted Messages and not to GoDaddy's Trash folder.  So I set this to point to GoDaddy's Trash thinking that this might help.  It MIGHT have been what fixed the problem, but it's not likely.
A few other notes to help you guys:
    1) We weren't losing emails from any IMAP folder except the Inbox.
    2) I tried setting the IMAP folder path to / but that broke the subfolders.
    3) After turning off the Auto-Purge and dragging the deleted emails back into the Inbox from the Trash (using Apple Mail to do so), there were duplicates of these emails in the GoDaddy Webmail Inbox that did not show in the Apple Mail Inbox.
    4) Using other mail clients like Thunderbird didn't help.  The iPad and iPhone would eventually lose the emails too as everything sync'd up with the server.
    Hope that helps somebody!

I've had the same problem...  As with MOST of the e-mail problems with the PRE the best solution is to delete the account and reload it...  I've had to delete and add my account twice!!!
PALM better fix the e-mail functions or a lot of people (my self included) will get real fed up deleting and adding the account every two weeks...
PALM - ARE YOU ADDRESSING THE PROBLEMS???

Try rebuilding the mailbox. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.

  • IPhone 5 - IMAP emails disappear after 1 read, but still present in outlook.

    Hi,
I have a client who is experiencing a weird issue.  They have 3 email accounts on their iphone 5 all with the same @blankdomain.com IMAP address.  Only 1 of these accounts is having this issue, the others are set up the same, but do not experience it.
It receives and sends fine from that account, but after an email is read, the email disappears off the device.  It is still present in the inbox in Outlook on thier PC, but very inconvenient it does not remain on the device.
Right now I have suggested taking a screen shot of the email once opened so they can later reference it, but also clearly not ideal.
Any idea's what might be causing this? Or troubleshooting steps to try?
    Thanks!
(sorry if this thread is out there already, I searched and found similar threads but not exactly what I was looking for)

Does anyone from apple ever read these questions, or are questions the community doesn't know anything about just left here to rot lol?

  • Some (not all) emails disappearing / deleting themselves from folders in the Mail app on iPhone 4S

I am having an issue with some of my emails disappearing on my iPhone 4S and I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing similar issues and might offer a solution? I have three email accounts on my iPhone 4S and iPad 2 (of which include my iCloud @mac.com and Yahoo!) and all are set up as IMAP so that I can be sure both devices remain in sync at all times. The issue occurs when I go into any of my archive email folders, in any one of my three email accounts and let the iPhone sync with the server so that it is up-to-date. Sometimes - not everytime - I will watch as one of my most recent emails that is cached on the phone suddenly vanishes as it pulls down the rest of the emails archived in that folder. As soon as that email vanishes, it will then automatically remove it from the server (being that it is IMAP) and that email is then gone for good. It has not been moved to trash or any other folder because I can subsequently log into Yahoo! mail for instance and do a complete search for it and it won't find it at all. At first I thought it was my fat thumb (!!!) that had acidentally hit delete on the email but it is happening around twice a week and it has only happened since getting my iPhone 4S. I have contacted Apple support by phone and they suggested completely wiping the phone and restoring from backup, of which I have done. I have changed various settings such as showing 50 recent messages rather than 1000, turing on "organize messages by thread" and "ask before deleting" and trying that for a week but none of that has helped. I have a feeling this is an iOS5 issue rather than a hardware issue because my iPad 2 has started to do the same thing and it never did it before I upgraded to iOS5. Nor did my old iPhone 3GS that I had for two years. I am losing important emails and I'm getting to the stage of thinking about never opening the Mail app on either device for fear of losing any more important emails. I'm considering resorting to logging into Yahoo! and iCloud webmail via Safari instead which is a bit of a pain. Very sorry for the long message but thought i'd best be as thorough as possible. If any of you guys have had similar issues, or if you have any suggestions please feel free to chime in. Many thanks.

Thanks to everyone for their replies - I thought that it was just me with this issue but clearly not. Also thank you to Mil_Prep and S2Linda's suggestions, unfortunately all three of my email accounts do not have a "Mail Days To Sync" option - I believe that this option only appears in Mail settings if the account is an exchange email account. Even if I was able to adjust the time period of emails to sync, I don't think that it would help because the email(s) that are going missing can be as recent as one day old, leaving all my earlier emails in the same folder intact - some of which can go back to the year 2002 for instance. I am still convinced that it is a bug with headers in iOS5. Last week I even had a related problem where I had a new email merge with an old email. The senders email address, subject title and date remained the same but the body of the text was replaced with an old email from 2006! Very odd....

If this is your iCloud email account, whcn you delete an email from any of your devices, they are moved to the trash on all devices/computers, then the trash is automatically deleted after 30 days.  That's how IMAP accounts work.  You can't delete them from your device and keep it on the server because you are reading and deleting from the server itself.
If you want to keep them on your Mac, you'll need to move them to a folder rather than deleting them.  When you do, they will be moved to the same folder on your other devices.

  • Email disappearing from iPad when I download in iMac

My wife is having the problem that looks like the ISP's (GCI.net) email server is deleting email from my iPad.
With her iMac off, when she is traveling, she can download and read email on her iPad. All the email stays there, unless she intentionally deletes something.
BUT, when she get home from a trip and goes to check email using Apple's Mail on her iMac, which is set to "Remove from server ...," she can WATCH as the email disappears from her iPad -- I have watched this. This has been very frustrating, as I have tried everything I can think of to no avail. My old PowerMac and my older iPod Touch has no problem with GCI email. I have gobs of savedemail on the iPod with the same Mail settings on the PowerMac (I do plan to upgrade to an Intel Mac, this fall, btw).
Searching the web and here inthe Apple forums, I have so far not found anyone with this situation. It acts like the email content on the iPad is only what is on the GCI.net servers. When my iMac removes those, they disappear from the iPad. But, I seen no settings on the iMac or iPad that will fix this. I have tried everything I can think of.
Her Gmail account works fine on her iPad.
The iMac is set up with POP account. (As is my PMG5). The iPad was forced to set up a POP account (as a possible solution) for GCI email because the default IMAP is where we first discovered the issue of the server appearing to delete email from the iPad.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Some of the older 30-pin-to-USB cables have catches on the iPad end. The connector block on them extends further from the iPad than the ones without the catch; they are almost square. You have to squeeze the sides of the connector to disengage the catches.
I'm not sure what being in iTunes has to do with it, though.

  • How do I upload an 'On my Mac' email archive in Mail to an 'On my computer' folder in Outlook for Mac??

I've installed Office for Mac with Outlook and want to import an archive of 'On my Mac' emails from Mail to a new folder created in Outlook's 'On my computer' section.
When I recently upgraded to Mavericks, I was able to import this archive back in from a system backup I'd made beforehand. I thought I would be able to do the same again now, but Outlook's import function won't play ball, not even after I have led it to the 'Mailboxes' folder of MBOX data that I've saved onto my desktop. Outlook's 'import' button remains greyed out and unresponsive, even after I've opened the 'Mailboxes' folder to expose the MBOX data.
I now know I am not alone in being unable to complete this task by the only method suggested in Outlook's 'Help' that is open to me - ie, to "import messages in MBOX format". I got nowhere at all trying the alternative, to "Import Apple Mail messages", where, after clicking 'File / Import', the options encountered bore little resemblance to those described in 'Help' - eg, to import, specifically, "Entourage information from an archive or earlier version" rather than the more general "Information from another application", whilst there was subsequently no mention whatsoever of "Apple Mail" after clicking "the right arrow to continue".
I've since learned from trawling internet forums that Apple and Microsoft MBOX folders are not the same, which is presumably at the heart of this. There are also various solutions proffered, involving either uploading the archive over an IMAP connection (which I do have, to Gmail) to a shared email account, or using proprietary software that either converts email data from Mail to Outlook friendly or enables it to be uploaded from one to the other. However, none of the simpler solutions are relevant (they tend to be restricted to particular mail clients, etc) whilst the others require programming familiarity and skills that I don't possess.
It's hard to believe that Microsoft could produce this suite expressly for Macs and, in the case of the Outlook component, implicitly to replace its Mac counterparts, yet for it to be incapable of doing so in the crucial, basic area of importing pre-existing Mac email data.
Whilst I have taken this up with Microsoft, I'm just hoping there might be someone out there in the Mac community who might know the answer . . .

Connect in recovery mode and restore, you'll get the option to rest the passcode during this process:
iOS: Unable to update or restore and iPhone and iPod touch: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.

  • Emails disappeared after a move, followed by an undo.

I have completely lost 28 emails that I was trying to move to my "action" folder - I can't find them in my trash or with Spotlight.
Here's what happened: I selected all the emails remaining in my inbox; there were 31. I grabbed them, intending to drop them into my action folder. I dropped them instead into my archive folder. Panicking, I immediately went to undo in the menu, hit undo "move 31 messages," and then clicked on my inbox. 3 of the 31 messages were there, and the other 28 are completely gone.
Is there any hope? I'm a blogger, so there were emails from people I don't know; with no way to recover them, I'll never be able to respond to them.

In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/ and check whether the affected mailboxes have more .emlx files than messages show up in Mail.
Have you checked whether the messages are still on the server? What type of mail account is this (POP, IMAP, .Mac)? If POP, what are your Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove copy from server settings?
If the .emlx files associated with those messages are gone and you don’t have a backup, you may try to salvage as many deleted .emlx files as possible with a data recovery tool such as Data Rescue II or FileSalvage. Stop using the computer right now if you want to try that, as anything you do with it may cause the deleted files to be overwritten.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • Unwanted GMAIL - how to disable in mac email

I am a member of a volunteer organization and as such I am currently using a gmail account on that organizations behalf. At some point, that account will be
    managed by someone else.
My issue is this: The emails from the gmail account are showing up in my mac email. They show up right alongwith the emails that come from my verizon account (which is the only email account I have set up on my mac) I NEVER went in to my mac email and added the gmail account! Also, I have verified that the POP and IMAP settings on the gmail account are disabled.
I am at a loss to figure out how to remove the gmail from my mac email.  At this point I think it is some sort of setting or configuration on my mac that is still causing the problem and for some reason I can't access it. Any suggestions or ideas are greatly appreciated.

In Apple Mail, click the Mail menu, then Preferences, then Accounts. Do you have only your Verizon account there, or Gmail as well? If it's only Verizon, then somehow your Gmails are being forwarded to Verizon (which has nothing to do with Apple Mail).

  • "Other" login option disappears/reappears.  Need help preventing this!

I administer a Mac lab with 20 old 10.4.11 Macs.  There are a variety of login options available on startup, most for specific grades in our school.  One catchall login option is "Other".  Once "Other" is selected, students have to enter their network login ID/password.  This specific login process lets the 5th graders access their legacy (OS 9) keyboarding program.  They save their work to their network folders (OS 10.5.8 server).  Normally this works fine, but on several of the IDENTICALLY CONFIGURED Macs, the "Other" initial login option "disappears"/reappears.
This is a significant problem for the keyboarding class, so anyone who can tell me how to fix this problem will be rewarded in Heaven.  Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Thanks for the reply.  The deal is that I AM the Network Manager.....  and my Mac background is limited.
There are enough similarities between Active Directory (what I'm used to) and Open Directory that I can function in our computing environment without problems (usually).
This situation is just plain odd due to its sporadic nature,  This problem will eventually go away when we replace the 10.4.11 Mac workstations and the really old Classic keyboarding program.  Until then, I will check DNS.  Thanks.
While I'm here, do you have any idea why I can't map a network drive from our Windows 7 PC laptops to our Mac OS 10.5.8 server?  The Mac workstations connect to the server with no problem.  We have one subnet so being on different subnets is not an issue.

  • Error message when setting up .Mac email account on iPhone

Hi - I've tried Apple support, iphone support, and the submit a question/problem to the mac people with no luck. So, I'm taking my question to the next higher level -- you all.
So here is the issue. I have had a mac email account for years. I buy my cool new iPhone a few weeks ago, and add my main apple mac email account to the iphone. All is good, and I can send/receive email messages from my main account. Then I add = three other email accounts I have on mac for internet/web surfing, and all is good there too. So, now I can access my 4 apple mac accounts on my iphone.
Here is the problem -- a few days ago, my main apple mac account stopped working on my iphone. I can still send/receive email messages via web based mac mail, and I can access all my mail on my laptopn (just like usual). But, now, when I go to check my main mac account on my iphone it says unable to verify username or password.
So, I have tried 100 different times now, all to no avail. I deleted it, rebooted it, tried it as a mac account, an IMAP account, POP account, etc.
I have all the latest versions of itunes, iphone, etc.
So, can anyone help me (pleeeese)......
    Thanks, Drew
