IMovie 08 version 7.1 not responding - spinning rainbow

Hello,
It seems like there are a lot of people reporting that after the update to iMovie 7.1 - they can't use iMovie with their pre-existing data (pictures/movies/projects/preferences).
Here are some steps to see if you have the same problem that I had, some steps to isolate the issue, and one thing that worked for me to get iMovie 7.1 working again (by deleting my old projects and preferences)
Please read over one other article before attempting to move your preferences - it covers the basics of isolating software issues - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25398 - you'll also want to make notes on paper when you start moving folders in case it doesn't work and you want to undo the changes you make.
1) Do you have the problem?
If activity monitor and/or force quit window show that iMovie is drawn in red and not responding for more than 5 minutes. If you normal quit the program (command Q) - iMovie will exit promptly - there should not be a need to force quit the application.
2) Isolate the issue.
Your mac could have other problems and iMovie might not be the issue. I would make a new account in the account preference pane, log out of your accout and log in to the new account. Fire up iMovie - if it hangs there too with no prior preferences, no old events, no movies in the iPhoto library - you can be pretty sure there's something else going wrong. It might be worth re-installing the updates or reloading your OS - but the workaround I will propose below won't likely help you find or fix your problem.
3) Workaround
Set aside your old preferences and movies to get iMovie 7.1 working again. Then you should be able to re-import the raw video again and do some work with your current version of software (since there is no uninstall for this update). This won't actually fix your data or the iMovie program - you'll have to wait for another article or tool or update if you can't leave behind your old data... If you have lots of time, you might try things one by one to figure out what exactly was wrong - but I didn't have the time or inclination to debug this further - so I'll document what I've done in case it helps someone else...
a) Quit iMovie (heck - quit all apps you can since I will propose moving the caches aside)
b) Make a folder on your desktop called "old" or whatever you please and move these things there:
Your iMovie preferences stored in ~/Library/Preferences
Your iMovie data folders (Projects, Events, etc...) stored in ~/Movies
Your Caches folder stored in ~Library
c) Log out of your account (so any programs using old Caches are forced to make new Cache files)
d) Log back in to your account. If you are not paranoid - fire up iMovie - it should start fine. At that point you can pick to leave the old projects behind and start again - or quit iMovie and move the old folders back (trash Caches - move the other items back to where they were before overwriting the "new" Preferences and folders...
e) If you are paranoid or firing up iMovie still didn't work - download and reinstall iLifeSupport81.dmg and iMovie_710.dmg to be sure you have the latest versions installed correctly.
Good luck,
Mike
p.s. I don't think anyone that has this problem could have fixed their data to prevent this "lock up" - and since it's fairly widely reported - I'm hoping a new update might be able to let iMovie 7.1 handle the same data that iMovie 7.0 was using just fine before the update. For those that program - here is a sample of my iMovie when it locked up...
<pre>2007-09-27 21:33:37.299 sample[405\] threadreadstack: stack appears to be corrupt
or in inconsistent state. Truncating stack.
2007-09-27 21:33:37.309 sample[405\] threadreadstack: stack appears to be corrupt
or in inconsistent state. Truncating stack.
2007-09-27 21:33:37.309 sample[405\] threadreadstack: stack appears to be corrupt
or in inconsistent state. Truncating stack.
</pre>
(the stack was really corrupt - this line was printed 598 times while the sample program was trying to see what iMovie was up to when the beach ball was spinning - it's not normal for a properly running program to have a corrupt stack so I'm not surprised that iMovie could never regain it's wits once it went off the deep end so to speak while looking over the files it was preparing to work with)
Here's the good part of the sample that seems to show the program in the process of building up the list of media it needs to work with (which needs to happen when the program starts and before we get to use the program)
<pre>299 -[ILMediaGroupsTreeController reloadAllGroups\]
299 -[ILMediaGroupsTreeController filteredGroupHeirarchy:\]
299 -[ILMediaBrowserView _shouldDisplayMediaGroup:\]
299 -[ILMediaGroup filteredAllMediaObjectsCount\]
299 -[ILMediaGroup allMediaObjects\]
299 -[ILMediaGroup allMediaObjects_SearchedGroups:\]
261 -[NSArray containsObject:\]
261 _NSArrayIndexOfObject
175 _ArrayIndexOfObject
97 objc_msgSend
</pre>
Again - I don't have source code for iMovie - so I may be way off on my guess - but it seems like the program version 7.0 wrote or handled data in a way that makes 7.1 mighty unhappy.

Mike,
I also had a bunch of bugs appear when I got the automatic update.
I went and offloaded this file
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovie71.html
And the bugs were not there after I reinstalled.
Hope that helps,
Cheers,
I'm now tryign to figure out the volume controls.....

  • IMovie 6.0.3 - Not Responding.

Hey All, I've been searching for the past month for help online over this. iMovie was working ok (Although I never really used it a lot, till I needed to Edit a video) When I tried opening it would do the normal options screen, I clicked Create New and it started loading, and loading, and loading I looked to Force Quit and it said it wasn't responding. So I tried again, this time it went straight to where it left off. I found where it was saving the file and deleted, So I started it again, it went to the options menu, Clicked Create new.. but same thing happened.
I deleted iMovie and Reinstalled using the Apple CD and it still does this! I deleted the preference folder (which was "com.apple.iLife.plist", "com.apple.iMovie.plist" wasn't there) and it still not working!
This problem has been happening since before 10.4.10, I thought the update would fix it, but it didn't.
I honestly don't know what else to do! I am thinking there some other files corrupted I figured reinstalling the program would update those files and fix the problem.
One other idea is corruption from another video software, what other softwares beside Quicktime should I worry about?
    ANY help is Highly appreciated!
    Thanks!
    God Bless

Wow I didn't expect a reply that fast! THANKS!
I don't have Flip4Mac and no Plug-ins for Quicktime, I'd have to try the Disk Util tool.
NOW, its funny how you find things by mistake. I mistakenly clicked on the Guest account on my computer while log-in just now and I tried iMovie just for kicks. well, it WORKS So its definitely something on my Account.
I had 3 Accounts before for my cousins, and I had tried it there but, it didn't work then. I was scared they were taking up too much space, and I deleted both the other accounts; but made a guest account instead just about a week ago! (I guess new files)
So, it HAS to be something extra thats on my side! I can always just make another account for Using Movie editing tools. If I can't find what's the bug.
I am just very excited I can stop using my old Laptop PC (In which Id have to be on the look out and save every min cause of all the crashing) to edit videos. :P moments like those are the ones that make me appreciate Macs even MORE!
    Thanks again Bengt!

  • I have a problem with the latest version of itunes not responding when i open it.

Every time i open itunes on my PC i cant do any thing and have to use task manager to close it as it keeps not responding

Thanks but I had already read this, and it was no help at all.  Under the Summary tab, "Options", there is no check-box to manually manage my stuff.  I suspect this is because it is a 2nd gen iPod, with ONLY manual management.  The only way to delete my stuff seems to be to reset the entire device.
I like to listen to podcasts.  What is particularly frustrating is that the 4th gen shuffle CANNOT play podcasts, but ONLY music, which I discovered after a lot of research and multiple visits to an Apple store.  So I have to resort to an older version of the shuffle to play podcasts  And now with the latest version of iTunes there seems to be no way to delete any podcasts on the older version.  Apple just makes it harder and harder for us podcast-lovers, driving us away from Apple -- driving me away from the entire brand and from ALL Apple devices, not just iPod.

  • New version of Twitter not responding on my BlackBerry

I recently upgraded my Twitter app and downloaded the newest version 4.4.0.11 onto my BlackBerry Curve 9320 with OS7 (via BlackBerry World) but every time I open the app it says, 'Twitter services are currently unavailable.' It had previously worked, but only for a day. Is anybody else experiencing this problem? Is there any way to solve the issue? Or can I revert back to an older version of Twitter and if so, how?
    All answers appreciated. Thanks!

Picasa is not an Apple product.
You should ask the developers why they have not updated their application.

  • I downloaded the last version, but is not responding since that.

I can't open Garageband since I downloaded the new version on my MacBook Air, the application is not respondig. I uninstalled and downloaded again, but it is still not working.

First things to try: trash preferences, repair permissions.

  • How to delete clips in old Imovie version instructions do not work

How can I delete clips in events in imovie? I get the red line but when i click send to trash nothing happens. Likewise when I press command delete together the clips are not trashed. Just a "beep" Help! My computer is full!

That is to rename the Sections within the template, not the name of the Template in the Template Chooser, and it is greyed out if there are no alternative sections.
It is clumsy but you either go to the Templates folder in your User Library and rename it there, or save it with the new name and then delete the old one.

  • Ordered Wrong QT Version - Apple will not respond

I accidentally ordered QT Pro for WIndows (why would I do that!) and recieved the key. I meant to order it for the Mac. I have sent three emails to Apple during the last 10 days with no response. Calls to their help line, and other numbers, are of no help - they refer you to the QT Web site -- it's a run around. It may only be $30 - but, there must be some way to have them correct an honest error. Apple should be provising better support. Suggestions? Anyone?
I may dispute the cc charge and see if I can get them to respond that way.
    Thanks - Rob

I think you're right - they will not reverse the charge -- but, I did dispute it -- we'll see.
What really gripes me is a total lack of response from Apple -- no email back even saying you are out of luck - sorry. Apple's customer support model leaves a lot to be desired. It's difficult to talk to someone who can actually resolve an issue - and, with QT, you can't talk to a human -- it's all web based. To a large extent this discussion support site is good - plus, with MacFixIt most issues are resolved fairly easily. Also, there are very few "issues" with Mac products - for me anyhow.

  • Applications not responding after Mavericks upgrade

Just upgraded an IMac-2009 of a friend from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and faced Mail & Contacts not responding (spinning ball).
May be there coud be addtl applications not responding but i only checked the major ones and those 2 causes problems.
I just asked him to re-install OS-X (01:40) and i will see (am living far from him)
I have also read a lot of communities questions and have some lines of thinking like preferences & permissions.
    2 questions :
    1) Some ideas to help me
    2) is there a way to manage his IMac from home (I have a MacBookPro using Mavericks)
    Thank you in advance
    Best regards

    Hi,
Thanks for everything you provided to me : it helped me a lot.
The last status is (for info)
    - i decided to re-install Mavericks (for the 3rd time !!!) as the upgrade was so badly installed and i was surprised to see that this time, the re-installation shows "complements modules to re-install" (translated from french) with a schedule of 01:02 (against 01:40 before)
    - and apparently my friend called me later to say : everything is working fine. He recovered all applications.
Strange but I am happy by now.
    Thank you again

  • FCP X locks up (not responding)

Twice now on two different projects, once after hours of editing and just today after 30 minutes of editing, FCP X locks up (not responding), spinning beach ball, and I must force close it. When I go to reopen the program and open my project, it is completely BLANK, nothing in it.
I have the lastest upgrade to FCP X and this has happened on both my Mac Pro desktop (Early 2009 with 10 GB of memory and plenty of HD space) as well as on my new Macbook Pro on an external drive.
I HATE that I cannot save the file myself and that APPLE thinks I'm too stupid to do so. YES, I know I can create a whole new project, but that entails saving related files, etc. Just not as simple as a simple SAVE.
Can anyone help me? I am not comfortable starting on a large editing project, unsure if it will lock up and I'll have to start over.

My advice is to learn to use a new Application and get comfortable with it (working reliably) before you even contemplate starting an important project.
FCP X is working very well for a great number of people, but it does have its quirks too.
To be able to help you find out why you are getting crashes, you need to supply a lot more information than you already have - length of projects, what video codec you're working with, Whether your media is optimised, where your media, projects and events are stored - how the HDs are formatted etc etc.
Don't lose heart! It's an awesome application - you just need to see why it's not working well on your system.
Here are some of the most common ways to improve performance (you may have already addressed some of these but it's worth reading them.
FCP X runs very well (not perfectly, by any means) on my 2009 MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB
First, check the spec of your iMac against the system requirements:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/
Particularly your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended.
    Other ways to improve performance:
    Create optimised media.
Hide Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power.
Create folders in the Project library and put any projects you are not working on currently, in there. (Twirl it closed to hide them).
Move your Projects and Events to an external HD (make sure it's formatted OS Extended - with journaled on or off) and run from there.
The biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.

  • Adobe Acrobat webpage Printing spins/"not responding" in FF 3.6 latest release - please fix it

FF 3.6 (latest) Print web page to Adobe Acrobat v.9.02 spins and not responding. Earlier version of FF was ok w/Acrobat. I have the Acrobat Plug-ins in FF 3.6. Annoying to see FF 3.6 not ready for prime-time as prior versions. How can I go-back to FF 3.5? Thank you.

Hi, sorry it took me so long to reply. I finally had some time to troubleshoot the issue, and fortunately I found what was wrong .
But first, I must say that I am deeply ashamed, and I apologize to for coming here and blaming Skype, because it turns out the fault is completely mine. The problem was that a while back, a tech buddy of mine sent me his Windows "hosts" files (the hosts file allows a simple way to block unwanted and dangerous websites, as well as advertisements from loading on your computer). Most of the time, I do pay attention when I compile my hosts file, but this time I assumed my buddy's list of blocked websites was reasonable.
Turns out, he had the following entries in there (without the quotation marks):
    "skypeassets.com"
    "secure.skypeassets.com"
That means, any web page that needed to access these was blocked from loading. As a result, this is what broke the Skype Credit page.
I attached a screenshot to show what the Buy Skype Credit page looks like when it is blocked, so that way, if anyone has this issue and wonders why it's not working, check your hosts file (found in "C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc").
The Buy Skype Credit page now seems to work fine in all of my browsers (Firefox 32, Firefox 24, Opera 12/11/10, and IE8 ). I also tested IE6 just for giggles, but it gives a "Page Cannot be Displayed" error. This is very common with IE6, though. I'm just stating this in case anyone is still running that dinosaur browser (please don't, it's not safe or compatible).
Thanks, and I hope this was somewhat helpful .

    Hi All,
My iMovie opens and few secs later gets stuck! Not Responding!
Any idea? All up to date, OS X, MacBookAir...

Check memory and disk space (use Activity Monitor), and please report back. Also try closing all other apps.
What version of iMovie and OS X?

Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Why does Firefox frequently spin at (Not Responding) when navigating, then finally load after a delay?

I just updated to Windows 7 and Firefox 7. This has been happening navigating within the mozilla.com site, yahoo, and white pages (where I've noticed it so far). I will click to open something, and it will spin, and then the top line will say "Firefox Not Responding". Then after a while it usually loads. But sometimes it takes a minute or longer. I checked on Internet Explorer, and there is no delay for those sites.

The default of the pref network.http.max-connections has been increased from 30 to 256 in Firefox 6+ versions.
Try to decrease the value of the pref <b>network.http.max-connections</b> from 256 to 30 as used in Firefox 3 versions.
