"Incompatible files" No install disk. Now what?

I have an old iMac -350 MHz G3 running OS 9.1- that I only use with my workhorse of a scanner. I've tried to network via Ethernet and a router with my newer iMac -1.8 GHz G5 running OS 10.3.9- with intermittent success. Sometimes an icon comes up on either computer usually after restarting one or the other, usually not.
*My problem is this:* My old iMac hangs up at the restart. Everything loaded, I could see the desktop but all was frozen for a few minutes while the system did something with "HP LaserJet Engine" (an old printer which I no longer have).
Having forgotten the ol' extensions-manager-magic, I went into the system folder and trashed the file, any file with HP. Now it hangss even longer at startup, at least 5 minutes. I tried to rectify it with the extensions manager, no dice.
Disk First Aid says it appears to be ok. I ran Conflict Catcher and IT says the following files are incompatible: Apple Enet, AppleShare, Open Transport Networking Group, and Shared Manager Library... in other words, the extensions I need for networking.
*My question is this:* I don't have the original OS 9 install disks anymore, although I did find one for OS 8.5. Can I retro-install 8.5? I don't need anything on the computer except for the scanner and Photoshop 5.5 and both apparently work with 8.5.
To summarize, I really am trying to eliminate the freeze at startup without losing my networking capability.

Hi, gillian -
OS 9 is preset to reconnect to all hardware present the last time it was shut down. This includes a printer - it is difficult to get an OS 9 install to ignore all printers, that is, to accept a no-printer status.
However, try this -
• Go into the Printing Prefs folder (System Folder >> Preferences >> Printing Prefs), locate and throw away the file named LaserWriter 8 Prefs, and any similar preferences file which may be there, especially one carrying the HP or the printer designation.
If you had set up desktop printing in the past, also go into the Parsed PPD Folder (which is in the Printing Prefs folder) and toss out the ppd file bearing your old pronter designation.
Then restart. Zap the PRAM on this startup (this will clear any preset printer config which may be lurking in PRAM). If you're not familair with doing this - immediately upon hearing the startup chime press the Command-Option-P-R keys (it's not an accident that it usually takes two hands to press all four at the same time), keep them held down until you've heard three additional sets of startup chimes. Then let startup resume.
• If that does not clear the issue, then you may need to set up a virtual printer. You can do that using the Desktop Printer Utility which was installed as part of a standard OS 9 install (you may need to use Sherlock to search for it). Select the "Printer (no printer connnection)" item and follow the prompts.
Another item which can cause a long delay at startup is the machine trying to connect to a no-longer-available server. To fix that, open the Servers folder (in System Folder) and trash the aliases to all servers you do not want to have the machine auto-connect to at startup. If the machine is stand-alone, you probably need nothing in that folder.

I am using OS X and am trying to set up a HP ENVY 5660 e printer and the drivers are not listed.  I read somewhere not to use the install disk.  What do I do?

Your suggestion was a good one and what I found was that to use this and any other printer I looked at is that I need to update the operating system to a later version.  I have been reluctant in the past to do this after reading update horror stories and since this computer does what I need and very well.  Was glad I moved over from windows and this is the first problem I have had.  Thanks for your help and any other suggestions you may have.

  • I had osx version 10.6.8 i reinstalled osx with the install disk now i have 10.6.3

i had osx 10.6.8 i reinstalled with the osx install disk and now i have 10.6.3 and some of my apps are not compatible any suggestions please and thank you

It is possible you had used the Combo or software update to move from 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 prior to the reinstall.   Then when you reinstalled, the install disk took you to 10.6.3 and as MichelPM says, you will need to update again.
The appropriate combo updater is Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1   It's a big update and can take 40 minutes or more.
But you will still have to software update to pick up the latest security and iTunes updates.
Don't forget to back up your files first.

  • Aluminum Macbook missing install disks. What to do?

I recently purchased a used 13" aluminum macbook, and it did not come with install/restore disks. I purchased a larger hard drive and want to install the OS.
I understand that I cannot use versions of Leopard older than what originally came with the computer (v10.5.5) to install/restore the OS.
My question is, if I purchase version 10.5.6 will it be "computer-specific" to my macbook? or do I need to find a 10.5.5 version of Leopard? Does apple sell additional restore disks?
    Any help would be appreciated.

you should demand the original install disks from the seller. they are useless to him/her and they should be bundled with the computer.
Whether asking nicely or demanding anything of the seller, consider that Apple binds the license to use the software on the system disk set to the Mac they came with. If the disks are separated from that Mac, in effect the license stays with the Mac, not the disks, so anyone using those disks with anything other than that Mac is in violation of the licensing terms.
This is why Apple will (usually) provide new system disks for a nominal fee for a specific Mac -- you aren't buying a new license but just a set of replacement disks.
Note that this applies to all the software on the system disks, not just the OS. Thus, buying a retail version of the OS installer disk is not equivalent to replacing the system disks because the retail disk does not include any of the bundled apps that come with the Mac on its system disks.

it's when I access the photos through my pc, i go into the iphone file, then the file where the photos are and there are 100 of these small files named 'local disk' just before all the files for my photos

Message this morning that Adobe updates needed to be installed on my work laptop. But after the process, the "Update Complete" message indicated that only 3 of the 14 updates had successfully installed.  "Some components of the following products could not be updated successfully."  The error log provided no detailed information as to why. So now what's my next step to complete all the updates?

  • Extract Remote Disc Files From Install Disk

Can the remote disk install files be extracted (maybe the wrong word) from the install disk or be downloaded from somewhere so that I can put them onto a USB drive instead of carrying around my Macbook Air install disks? I'd rather not carrying around my original disks.
I tried to create a disk image of them, that worked out fine, but couldn't get them to fit onto the 4.7 gig DVD's that I have....
TIA for any and all help.

I know I sound Lazy but there must be someplace to Download the installs for the Remote Disc online somewhere? If not can someone please post it somewhere. It makes no sense to have to carry a DVD around. Pretty Please?

  • Installed Boot Camp w/o having Windows Disk, Installed Parallels, now what?

I installed Boot Camp not really knowing what was required, thinking that it was a download, not knowing it came with the computer. I then deleted it, thinking I could re-download it later since I didn't have a copy of the Windows OS, and now I still have it installed, but I would like the original back on my laptop since I got Parallels and have a windows disk. I just don't know where to go from here.

    Hi,
you can use eiter Pacifist http://www.charlessoft.com/ or these instructions from Apple http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1889 to reinstall the BootCamp Assistant in OSX.
Once done use the BootCamp Assistant to repartition your harddisk back to a single-OSX harddisk.
I would propose to have/make a recent backup of your OSX just in case.

  • File system verify failed, now what?

I was about to upgrade to Snow Leopard from 10.5.8 and before that tried to back up my drive to a new G Drive. Using Carbon Copy Cloner the process quit in the middle when the G Drive unmounted itself. I ran Disk Utility Verify on the G Drive and it showed up ok. I then tried again and CCC again stopped but this time with an error message I do not recall. Then I tried SuperDuper and the backup hung on an App (Garage Band) for 15 minutes and I aborted the back up. I ran Verify on the G Drive again and it was fine so I ran Verify on the HD and got the following message:
Disk Utility stopped verifying “Macintosh HD” because the following error was encountered:
    Filesystem verify or repair failed.
    Invalid volume file count
(It should be 1111231 instead of 1111232)
    Invalid volume directory count
(it should be 242475 instead of 242474)
The volume Macintosh Hard Drive needs to be repaired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
I have not tried the repair yet as I'm nervous I'm going to lose something. The drive isn't making noise but is slow. I've read suggestions of booting from the installation disc and then running Verify. My disc is 10.5.4, will I encounter issues after since I'm 10.5.8 now? Can I get a little hand holding here?
Machine is iMac, 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo, 4GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, OS 10.5.8
    Thanks,
    Stuart

No, you need to start from your Leopard Install disc and run Repair Disk.  See #6 in Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing  Disks.

  • Installing FCS2. Did Archive and Install. Now what?

I got studio 2 today and didn't like the idea of installing it over Studio. I searched and the gurus say don't do it. I'm confused about archive and install. If I do it do I just drag all the Studio apps in the trash after I do the Archive and Install or do I drag the apps in the trash before then install FCS2.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Erik

You got that right. I cloned my drive with SuperDuper then used Migration Assistant to move all my settings and users files over. No applications where moved. It was pretty easy. I'm still loading all my programs which is a drag but everything else is already been moved and that would have been a whole lot harder to deal with. I have three users on this Mac. Lots of files and folders. This was the first time I have done this and I did learn a few things. I have been making images of all my software and the updates keeping them all in a folder on a separate drive. next time I have to do this I will just open the image and sit back. No sticking disks in. And its faster. I have Leopard sitting on my desk but not brave enough to try it out just yet. I need a stable edit bay right now. I wish I could get a Intel mac just for FCP. Now that would be sweet. The G5 is still kicken but il bet this Studio 2 upgrade will be the last one for a G5.

  • Error installing Leopard- now what?

i tried upgrading from 10.3.9 to Leopard. There was any error halfway throught the install, now i cant boot up at all. Cant even access the OSX installation off the DVD. Can i re-install 10.3x from the grey cd without losing all my data?
    HELP!

    Welcome To  Discussions meida!
Did you choose to do a Simple Upgrade, an, Erase & Install, or an Archive & Install?
Did you create a backup of the system before the failed upgrade?
"Can i re-install 10.3x from the grey cd without losing all my data?"
Is that the system disc, for the original version of OSX, that was pre-installed, when the PowerBook G4 was manufactured?
If so, are you able to start up from that, to run Repair Disk?

  • BI installed but now what?

    Hi all,
I installed all parts of the Oracle App Server 10G (infra, midtier, and BI) and have been using the portal without problem. Now I'd like to pull in Discoverer portlets for my portal, but I cannot figure out how to do it. I tried to register Discoverer as a portal provider but that did not work. When I log in to the Enterprise Manager, I see Intra and Midtier, but I don't see the BI part.
What step am I missing here??
    thanks,
    christine

    Hi Christine
Before you can see Discoverer (OBI) in OEM alongside the Infra and Midtier you need to attach it. First of all lets make sure the Discoverer components are up and running. To do this, follow this workflow (the following assumes you are using Windows XP so you will have to insert the appropriate command if you are on a different platform):
    1. Launch Settings | Control Panel
    2. Select Administrative Tools | Services
    3. Expand the box and look for the services that begin with the word Oracle
    4. There are two that launch OBI, these are [OBI_HOME]ProcessManager and [OBI_HOME]ASControl. These need to be started in that order but only after you have started the Application Server database and your infrasructure.
If the Discoverer components are up and running you should be able to launch the OBI OEM URL. It should be the same as the one that you use to launch your normal OEM except try replacing the 1810 with 1812, or vice versa depending which one you installed first. To attach the OBI mid tier to your application server farm, follow this workflow:
    1. Launch the OBI OEM
    2. Enter your IAS_ADMIN userid and password
    3. On the top of the screen, click the Infrasructure link
    4. Under Identity management, click Configure and add the name of the server and the port for the OID you are using on the infrastructure - port is normally 389
    5. Under Default Metadata Repository, click configure and add the metadata repository
    6. Now when you launch your normal OEM URL you should see Discoverer as part of the farm. If this is true you should also be able to add portlets and get the portlet provider configured.
    Hope this helps
    Regards
    Michael

  • Re-installed everything, now what...

my daughter's laptop l305-s5499 (see attached) failed completely. nobody could fix it for less $$ than what a new laptop would cost. windows os would not reload, but I managed to "format C" after installing Fedora OS (interesting that fedora loaded).  please don't say that was "dumb". trust me, it was the only option, short of taking a sledge hammer to it. i found an old copy of windows xp, installed it and SP2 & 3.  i got it functioning with few downloads from toshiba (wifi and utility software) and flash player/adobe stuff. so far running great, but the sound does not function. what do i need to do?
also, any required toshiba downloads that are "a must" to install?
what's a toshiba "bios" download and do i need to worry about this?
Also, it originally came loaded with windows vista basic, but no disc.  the key code sticker is still on the laptop.  can i download a replacement vista basic without purchasing a new set?  or, should i leave it alone, since it's working (so far)?  i have over 35 hours in getting to this point and i'm frustrated with the entire process. i hate to start over if xp will be fine.
i'm not a "computer guy" so please dumb-down replies.  thank you, in advance.
