Installing Arch on a MacBook Pro Retina

I've spent many hours trying to install Arch on my macbook pro to no avail (over 14 times I've tried), I've learned a lot through this process, but apparently not enough. I get the system installed and blessed (in OSX), but when I try to boot into it I get stuck on "loading initial ram disk." (Previous errors were a read-only file system, but this one is latest) My hunch tells me it has something to do with the mkinitcpio.conf (I was told to add "ahci" to MODULES and "keyboard" after "autodetect" in "HOOKS") and I know the mkinitcpio -p linux command creates the initial ram disk environment (thanks to the docs).
Here are my steps, the bash scripts I created to do all this. Does anything look out of the ordinary to anyone?
cgdisk /dev/sda #(setup partitions as below, sda1-3 not shown)
#partitions: (sda4 == 128MB Hfs+, sda5 == 256MB Linux (boot), sda6 == 30GB Linux (root), sda7 == 70GB #Linux Home)
#first script
mkfs.ext2 /dev/sda5
mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda6
mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda7
mount /dev/sda6 /mnt
mkdir /mnt/boot && mount /dev/sda5 /mnt/boot
mkdir /mnt/home && mount /dev/sda7 /mnt/home
pacstrap /mnt base base-devel
genfstab -p /mnt >> /mnt/etc/fstab
arch-chroot /mnt /bin/bash
#second script
#install wifi (dmesg | grep firmware still says no firmware tho...)
pacman -S wget b43-fwcutter
wget https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/b4/b … are.tar.gz
tar -zxf b43-firmware.tar.gz
cd b43-firmware
makepkg -si --asroot #kosher?
rmmod b43 && modprobe b43
echo arch > /etc/hostname
ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/US/Central /etc/localtime
hwclock --systohc --utc
useradd -m -g users -G wheel -s /bin/bash dmj && passwd dmj
sudo pacman -S sudo
nano /etc/sudoers #comment out wheel portion
sudo nano /etc/locale.gen #pick locale
locale-gen
echo LANG=en_US.UTF-8 > /etc/locale.conf
export LANG=en_US.UTF-8
mkinitcpio -p linux #someone said i need "ahci" in modules?
#make boot loader, copy to usb
pacman -S grub-efi-x86_64
grub-mkconfig -o boot/grub/grub.cfg
grub-mkstandalone -o boot.efi -d usr/lib/grub/x86_64-efi -O x86_64-efi -C xz boot/grub/grub.cfg
mkdir /mnt/usbdisk && mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/usbdisk
cp boot.efi /mnt/usbdisk/
umount /mnt/usbdisk/
sudo pacman -S dialog wpa_supplicant iw
exit
umount /mnt/home
umount /mnt/root
umount /mnt/
sudo reboot
I finally got a descriptive error message and am very excited to show everyone.

Ok, so I managed to boot into arch. The issue was my fstab. The custom settings I was using were incorrect. Going with the defaults helped. Also, the version of grub I was using was broken. See this link for the fix: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=164101
So after I tar -xvJf xxx.tar.xz the fixed version I was able to generate a boot.efi, copy it onto the 128MB HFS+ on OSX and then bless and boot.
A whole new slew of errors occurred.
First, the video mode error occurs "No suitable video mode" (and something about a font).
I found a fix for it here: (but it didn't work) https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GR … d.22_error
I added
cp /usr/share/grub/unicode.pf2 ${GRUB_PREFIX_DIR}
Then add:
UEFI systems:
insmod efi_gop
insmod efi_uga
After that add the following code (common to both BIOS and UEFI):
insmod font
if loadfont ${prefix}/fonts/unicode.pf2
then
    insmod gfxterm
    set gfxmode=auto
    set gfxpayload=keep
    terminal_output gfxterm
fi
Gist: Add these few lines to your grub.cfg, result: no luck still this error
What I'm not sure is if if this is affecting my ability to start the xorg-server.
Then after that the network became unreachable (which is strange because the ethernet worked ootb on install)
systemctl enable dhcpcd@enp0s10
systemctl start dhcpcd@enp0s10
allows me to ping -c 3 google.com
Lastly, I cannot start the xorg server. Says the nvidia module is bad. I installed bumblebee, and ran startx (not from root) and I get a black screen. This is after installing: xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-server-utils xf86-input-synaptics nvidia acpid
Then running: systemctl enable acpid nvidia-xconfig
My graphics card is a Geforce 650M and I've read I should be using the nvidia module, not the open source noveau module.
startx just boots into a blank screen now and I'm unsure why.
Any speculations, ideas, or thoughts would be gladly welcome.
Thanks ahead of time!

I just Installed Yosemite update on MacBook Pro retina late 2013 will not boot flashing folder with ?

dunno, Lynn--maybe Etrecheck. trying running disk utility to verify the status of your hard drive. That may give you a basic idea. Perhaps tech tool pro.  As for it running hot, I can't say for sure. try shutting it down and using a vacuum clearner +crevice tool around the back of it.  It's been my experience that hard drives usually fail without a lot of warning, luckily you have a backup. Afterwards you can say "Yup, that went bad".  I've done a little research and found out that your MacBook Pro doesn't come with a conventional hard drive as such, but an SSD (solid state device) . It's upgradeable (up to 1 TB ) but not cheaply
go here for more info (OWC) :http://eshop.macsales.com. For right now, I'd recommend resetting the SMC/PMU, maybe zapping the pram . to do that, reboot, hold down Apple+Option, P+R keys while rebooting. Hold down for 3 chimes, let go and let it boot. as for the SMC thing....
I'm assuming your battery isn't removeable-shut down computer, plug in MagSafe cable . On built in keyboard, on left side, press Shift-Control-Option and power button at the same time.  release all the keys and the power button. press power button again to turn on computer
    that is all

  • There is already installed mavericks on my macbook pro retina 15 inch but ı want to create recovery disk

Hey guys ı really need your help. I bought macbook pro retina 15 inch 2 weeks ago and it came with installed mavericks of course but ı want to create a recovery disk and to do that ı need to download mavericks installer from app store but when i click to download mavericks from appstore purchased part ı get a message says " Your purchasing process couldn't complete. OS X Mavericks cant be installed to this computer." How can ı solve this problem!??

One way around tis is to borrow a Mac that can run Mavericks and then the download will work.  You can use these instructions:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1167857/how_to_make_a_bootable_mountain_lion_ins tall_drive.html
Though they are for Mt. Lion, the same steps will work.

  • Error while trying to install safari extensions on Macbook Pro Retina

    Dear All,
Yesterday I had to re-install Mountain Lion OS on MacBook Pro Retina. Everything went smoothly however after the installation process and updating sytem to the newest possible version, I am not able to install any Safari extensions. I was trying to find any information in the internet about this but so far I am unsuccessful in solving this issue. I am currently running Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and Safari 6.0.1. I would be grateful for any help.
    Best Regards,
    Jan

    Back up all data now.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:20 ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ 2> /dev/null
Be sure to select the whole line by triple-clicking anywhere in it. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar. A text window opens.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

I got Photoshop Elements 10 for Christmas and now I just finally got my new Macbook Pro retina that doesn't have a cd/dvd drive so now I don't know how to install it?? Help please!!

  • Can I install Windows 8 on MacBook Pro retina?

I need to install Windows 8 or 7 in Boot Camp in order to run my embroidery software. What specific form of Windows do I need to install a full version (not an upgrade, since I do not have Windows on the MacBook Pro)? Also, I understand that Boot Camp 5 will not run Windows 8.1. Should I buy Windows 7 and steer clear of 8 altogether?
My Bernina and Floriani embroidery software will run on either Windows 7 or 8.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Joanna

Yes but with that version, style, it is tied to the first set of hardware, computer, it is installed on. So in theory it can't be moved to another set of hardware, computer.

  • Clarification required as to installing Arch Linux onto Macbook Pro

I own a 13 inch Mid 2010 Macbook Pro with the base configuration. When partitioning my hard drive what hexadecimal flag should the 100 MiB boot partition be given and what format should it be formatted to? Also upon running iwconfig wlan0 does not appear how can I get wifi to work? Thanks in advance.

Unless you're installing a new hard drive, I would recommend reusing the factory formatted ESP. (You'll definitely want to do this if you're dual booting with OS X.)
In regards to wifi (and other installation and configuration issues), I would recommend (re)reading the MacBook Wiki. Most of the MacBook specific installation issues have been worked out and documented there.
    Good luck.

  • Why won't Maverick install on my 2012 Macbook Pro Retina?

I can't sign onto the Apple Store, when I click install app it does nothing, what's going on?  Running OS 10.8.5, plenty of disk space remaining.
This isn't the first time this has happened.

I'm afraid that didn't solve my issue.
I've shut down and restarted my MacBook Pro many times attempting to resolve this.
To reiterate, I can't sign onto my account at the Mac Store on this machine, it simply does nothing when I click on "sign in", therefore I can't do anything at all at the store as far as buying an app.
When I click on the Maverick Free Upgrade button, it turns green.  Then I click on the green button, within less than a second, it turns from green "install" back to the "Free Upgrade" gray button.
I've used Macs since 1984, yes really, and never been as frustrated as this since the OS 7.0 debacle over a decade ago.

  • BSOD when installing Windows 7 on MacBook Pro Retina

I tried everything I could but I'm unable to install Windows 7 on my MBP Retina using Boot Camp because of recurring blue screens always happening at exactly the same time.
After creating a new partition with Boot Camp and restarting to the point where the MBP is supposed to boot from the Windows 7 installation CD or USB flash drive (tried both), the black and white "Windows is loading files" passes without problems but I ALWAYS get a BSOD a few seconds after the Windows splash screen appears.
Here are some examples of the errors I get:
I tried reformatting and reinstalling Lion on my SSD several times, I even ran extensive memtest batteries but the RAM appears to be OK. I really don't know what to do anymore.
I read that Windows has issues with the HFS file system which can cause BSODs but since the error appears before I can even install Windows I cannot modify anything in the Windows installation. Then again it could be a ton of other things...

Could be you khave a corrupted Win 7 install file/files.
Try downloading the Win 7 ISO for the version you have from here.
    http://www.mydigitallife.info/download-windows-7-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit- direct-download-links/
Then burn that ISO to a USB or DVD, USB would be better.

  • Installing CS4 on a MacBook Pro Retina

So, I seem to be having all sorts of issues re-installing Photoshop CS4 on my new MacBook Retina. I've erased completely the version that came in via my transfer from Time Machine (which wasn't working) and started my re-installation via the original disc. The problem is, it get as far as Adobe AIR, then gets totally hung up and ceases to upload. Any ideas of how I can get this bloody program back on my machine and working properly?

It may never work. Even CS6 apps have issues with Retina MBPs. The general recommendation is to enable half res mode (somewhere in the monitor settings) for legacy compatibility to begin with, at least that's what I gather from reading forum posts. In your case you will/ may/ should also run the Creative Suite Cleaner Tool to fix your defunct installer stuff. Still, it might still not work since the next issue is CS4 vs. OSX 10.7.x/ 10.8.x not working all that well. Anyway, you might wanna investigate this stuff a bit before jumping into the action...

  • Thundrbolt firmware update 1.2 will not install using yosemite on macbook pro retina

Cannot install thunderbolt firmware update 1.2 on macbook 13 in retina running yosemite.  Have tried disconnection all peripherals.  No success.

Probably your Thunderbolt display is already up-to date. To check this, follow these steps:
Choose About This Mac from the Apple () menu.
Click More Info and then click System Report.
Click Thunderbolt in the list on the left and locate the Thunderbolt Display section. If the Firmware Version is  26.2 and the Port Micro Firmware Version is 2.0.7, you won't need this update.
I bought my ATD one year ago, and according to Apple it is "up-to date"... But I still have serious problems with it (follow this thread).

Late late last night I solved the problem
I have  both Adobe Acrobat X Pro and Adobe Reader X
I could neither update Reader nor install Reader X1.
On a hunch,  I launched Acrobat Pro , was notified of update which I could not install, either.
Same error message about  a changed environment  as I had received when unable to update Reader .
Recalling I  had similar Adobe issue one or more years ago, I UNINSTALLED Acrobat Pro and reinstalled from scratch

Others come up with ridiculous suggestions. Given I have spent $1k on software for no benefit, is it possible to pay someone from Abobe to install it so that it works?
