Installing iTunes 9.0.2 problem

After having problems installing iTunes 9.0.2 the straightforward way, I went through the proces of clearing the Temp file, uninstalling the old iTunes and getting the new one.
However this time I get a new error message, reading:
"Error getting file security: C\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\{755AC846-7372-4AC8-8550-C52491DAA8BD}\x86\GEARAspiWDM.sys GetLastError: 5"
Can anyone advise please?
Thankyou

In safe mode checked access, appears to be okay. If I was unsure I ticked the boxes for good luck next to my log-in but SYSTEMS was generally full access.
Renamed old {755AC846-7372-4AC8-8550-C52491DAA8BD} folder to something else.
Tried iTunes again. Was in checking "My Computer" as it installed. Came back with same access problem notice to GEAR.sys in same {755AC846-7372-4AC8-8550-C52491DAA8BD} folder, I assume it installs a new one every time. When the installation reverses, it deleted the newer {755AC846-7372-......} folder. So I am unable to check/alter access rights in safe mode.
In a similar fashion tried installing version 8.2.1, went into safe mode to delete {8CD7F5AF-ECFA-4793BF40-D842DBFF906} the file that contains the GEAR.sys folder, as couldnt do otherwise despite access rights seemingly okay when checked afterwards. Tried to install iTunes and get the error message:
"Error writing to file:C\ Docs and settings\All Users\Application Data\{8CD7F5AF-ECFA-4793BF40-D842DBFF906}\X86\dIFxiNSTALL32.exe. Verify that you have access to that directory."
Now when you cancel installation, iTunes deletes {8CD7F5AF-ECFA-4793BF40-D842DBFF906}, so I can't check access rights.
So seems something generic has changed for iTunes installation....?

I pulled my brains out trying to figure this bug out and I may have a solution for you.
All of it installed fine in my desktop, but a friend's laptop got the error you mentioned on quicktime, itunes, flash, officeXP and about anything else I tried to load for him.
If you look in: C:\documents and settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp there will be an iTunes install log...open it in Notepad and see if it isn't exiting with a 1619 error while running msiexec.exe
If this is the case, this fix should work for you.
Seems some configurations of XP (and possibly Vista) aren't allowing full administrator rights to the account you set up when you installed XP (even though User Editor says you do have those rights.)
I read 2 MS articles and turned off simple file sharing, then gave ownership of the entire C: drive to the administrator. Logged the admin account off, logged his "admin" account in, and then gave rights to his personal directory to his account (c:\docs and settings\<username>)
Once I did that, every install that had previously errored out performed flawlessly.
    The MS articles in question:
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316309 (1619 error)
    and
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308419 (how to set special permissions)
    Hope this helps!

A bit of repetition, mainly for the benefit of anyone else with the same issue. In your case the "for older video cards" version might be worth a try.
When cleaning folders you need to check both the Program Files and Program Files (x86) folders, which you may well have done but didn't mention in the detail above.
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The section Install missing components has advice on breaking down the iTunes installer into the individual .msi files which might prove useful if Apple Mobile Device Support won't install normally.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for performance issues or compatibility with third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • When trying to run after install: iTunes has encountered a problem and...

I just got my new Nano yesterday. I downloaded and installed the latest version fine, but when I try to run the app I get the the patented Windows error:
ITunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
    Send - Don't send
So I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, same thing.
Then I tried to install two earlier versions of 6. But I get the same exact error.
Also, when I try to open Quicktime. Nothing happens. All I get is the hour glass for about 2 seconds. But quicktime does not open.

hmmmm. i'm no great expert on MusicMatch installation troubleshooting. but we might be able to stop MusicMatch launching for you when a CD is inserted.
it sounds like there is a Windows AutoPlay setting on the CD drive, so that MusicMatch is set to launch every time you insert a Music CD. so let's try changing that setting.
in "My Computer", right-click on the CD drive and select "properties". click on the "AutoPlay" tab. in the pulldown menu, select "Music CD".
do you have MusicMatch set to launch? if so, change the action to something else (or select "prompt me each time ..." instead), and click OK.
does MusicMatch still launch when you insert a CD after doing that?

  • Can't install Itunes due to Quicktime problems

I have tried to install Itunes a few times, but every time I do I receive this error message, 'A newer version of Quicktime is already installed. This installation cannot proceed while the newer version of Quicktime is installed".
I have uninstalled Quicktime and searched through my computer for other quicktime files and removed them but still keep getting this message. Is there something that I'm not doing?

You could try an installer cleanup with the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility.
Download and install Microsoft Installer cleanup utility, there are instructions on the page as well as the download. Note that what you download is the installer not the program – you have to run it to install the program
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/
Then you should find the program in All Programs (or the equivalent in Vista).
Remove any references to QUicktime. Sometime you find a blank entry or one with just a version number.
Are you installing the latest versions of iTunes and Quicktime?

  • Installing iTunes 7, completely new problem

Hey everyone. I just bought a new ipod video today and have been trying to install iTunes since I got home. I've looked through every possible solution on this website(it seems like it). Everything I try fails. What happens is at the end of the installation a warning pops up and says Could not open key: HKEYLOCALMACHINE/Software/Classes/.m4a/OpenWithList. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key. Everytime I try to add permissions to that key it won't let me. What can I do?

at the end of the installation a warning pops up and says Could not open key: HKEYLOCALMACHINE/Software/Classes/.m4a/OpenWithList.
just doublechecking here. do you currently have permissions on the keys further up the heirarchy? if not, try changing the permissions at the highest level that you don't have permissions. (also make sure that you have "inherit permissions from parent" set.)

  • Problem installing iTunes 8.0

I am getting some kind of weird problem when installing iTunes.
The first problem was my AVG not allowing iTunes to install, i resolved that
but now i have this weird mini player unable to register.
    The exact error:
Module C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesMiniPlayer.dll failed to register.
HRESULT -2147023782. Contact your support personnel
wth do i even have a support personnel?

Found this on a support site and it just worked for me. It's an issue with AVG.
Uninstall and completely remove Itunes from your computer. Download Itunes and begin to reinstall it. After you begin to reinstall it, open up AVG.
Don't close anything and go to "tools" tab at the top. Select "Advanced settings" , then select "Exceptions" from the options on the left.
Then select "Add Path" in the upper right of the screen it refreshed. Then select both of these folders to add as exceptions:
    C:\Program Files\iTunes\
    C:\Program Files\iPod\
Apply the exceptions and hit "retry" on the itunes error. if it works, great. If not, just hit ignore - all is not lost. You'll get another error a little later - do the same thing (retry and/or ignore). ITunes will actually finish installing and then start.
    YAY!

  • IPhone is no more visibile in My Computer after installing iTunes 8

Hi all, after installing iTunes 8, iPhone isn't visible anymore in my Computer section in Windows. Previously, when I connected it, it was recognized as a photocamera and, from my Computer, i could access to it to see the photos that are stored on the iPhone.
Now, instead, iPhone isn't displayed anymore: except for this, it works correctly; iTunes 8 recognizes it and synchronizes it.
Notice: after the iTunes upgrade, when I've connected the iPhone for the first time, Windows says that he has found a new hardware and installed a new driver for an Apple Mobile Device USB.
Has someone else experienced my problem? Thanks in advance!

im having the exact opposite problem....my 3g is recognized inmy computer as a camera..but isnt recognized in itunes?
i have no pics downloaded from emails (as i researched this before)
the other night had same problem, had to restore phone, and re-install itunes..then no problem...but tonite trying to add new music and same thing again.
disabled iphone under imaging devices, and its only listed under usb controllers...computer recognizes it every time
there has to be a better way than restoring/reinstalling everytime?..has to be some little catch?
    HELP!
FYI, i phone not being used as phone, being used as ipod, and only using wifi..has no sim installed.

  • Need to re-install iTunes

I have a problem with my iTunes, everytime I try to sync my iPhone 4 it says "backing up" and doesn't seem to progress anymore. I need to cancel the sync everytime because it just doesn't do anything and then I need to end iTunes through Windows Task Manager as it freezes every time. My phone has also been forced to restore a few times too, and I've lost my backups so I've lost all photos, contacts, etc. and because I can't sync anything I have nothing on my phone. I have actually managed to sync all my music back on the phone though, after "repairing" iTunes through the control panel, but I can't seem to do a full sync.
I've been looking over the Internet with similar problems, and the only thing I can think of resolving this problem is re-installing iTunes completely and installing it again. Now, I'm pretty sure I know how to do this but I do not want to lose my music. I don't want to lose playlists, play counts, etc. either. Is it possible to completely re-install iTunes and keep everything I don't want to lose? Again, I'm pretty sure re-installing iTunes will resolve this problem I have, but if anyone has any other suggestions it'll be great. And I know its been mentioned before and I'm sorry for making a new discussion but nothing already mentioned has resolved the problem. Any replies will be appreciated

I don't want to lose playlists, play counts, etc. either.
These are stored in a file named
    iTunes Library.itl
I always make a copy of that and put it on a thumb drive before I reinstall/upgrade itunes. If the upgrade goes badly, I have a copy and I can revert back to the old itunes version and old library version.
That takes care of the itunes library database. The itunes library content is all the music, podcasts, video, apps, etc and should be in your user/Music/itunes folder.
Your phone's data backup is stored here
    \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Here is an article on backups. Make sure to "Expand All Sections" and read it all.

  • When I plug in my iphone 4s to sync to my windows computer it opens itunes but when it prepares to sync I keep getting a message that says itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. But this only happens when I connect the iphone.

I am able to connect my ipod and even just play itunes sucessfully. I have re installed itunes and the same problem presisits.

Make sure that your music is in the format supported by the iPhone. I use either MP3 or AAC.
A friend had the same problem a while back. All his music was in the WMA format and is therefore not playable on the iPhone and would not copy. Once he converted his songs to MP3 they copied to his iPhone without problem.

  • Trouble Re-Installing iTunes

I have received this error message when attmpting to re-install itunes, "there is a problem with the windows installer package. a program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."  I tried downloading and saving the itunes setup and doing the quicktime stand alone installation and it failed. Any tips? I can't have uninstalled and tried to install it all over several times, please help. Thank you!

Those ones are consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?
