Interfacin​g LabView compatible DAQ board w/ third party DAQ boards

Dear NI-team and board-members,
In my current project I'm using a third party Direct Digital Controller which supports customizable Programmable Logic Control (PLC) via a graphical programming software. Therefore, I'm acquisitioning temperatures (etc.) from my miniature-HVAC application via physically attached and mounted sensors, connect them to a dedictaed analog input (0-10VDC typically) and in further assign the analog input to some selected PLC modules with the help of the graphical programming software, and finally after doing the computation (calculator block) or control (Proportional-Integral-Derivative block) I assign the resulting control signal to a dedicated analog output (typically 0-10VDC as well).
So far for the previous history, NOW I actually want to be able, to manipulate these analog values in a way, that I'm not interested in the physical acquisitioned value from my real-time operating equipment (e.g. temperature sensors), more than that, I'm interested in assigning a certain level (e.g. +5 VDC) to that dedicated analog input, which in turn would represent a temperature e.g. in this simple case (+5VDC) 50degF.
Now to the questions, can I possibly interface the physical ANALOG INPUT (0-10VDC) of my third party DDC unit, with the ANALOG OUTPUTS (0-10VDC) of a NI DAQ board? In that way, I'd be able and with some additional help of LabView to program time intervals, where I raise the voltage level every 5 minutes by 1VDC, and in turn can proceed with my intended purpose.
To sum that up, are there physical limitations (e.g. ground loops, damage equipment, shorting) connecting an analog output of one board, to the analog input of another board?
Also, which DAQ of NI might be best suited for my intended purpose, using a NI DAQ board for "simulating" temperature values (etc.) onto the analog inputs of another third party board.

Hi Sandro,
If both boards are in the same computer I wouldn't be too worried about ground loops or damaging equipment. The ground reference to the AO board will be the same ground reference as the computer and AI board. You would have to check with the specs for your third party AI board to see what overvoltage protection it has and whether or not our AO board could give a voltage high enough to damage it.
I would suggest one of our AO boards to do the job. Depending on what kind of control and precision you want, we have static update boards available in PCI form. The static board will be cheaper but you are limited to software timed voltage updates (instead of clocked buffered waveform output).

I would suggest the AO board (PCI-67xx) instead of our M series multifunction boards because the AO boards have 8 or more output channels. The multifunction boards only have two output channels.

    I've stated that I've rebooted my router , disabled encryption and updated the firmware none of which have fixed the problem. 
    Also, I've stated that my wifi works with my iPhone 4s when I'm at work, it doesn't work with my wifi at home so I know that it is a driver issue related to older routers.  My girlfriend's ipad 3 stopped working on our home wifi after the update as well. 
    I can confirm that my wifi issue is with my home network not my work network.  I've tried changing encryption types, disabling encryption all together etc. 
    You can only restore in DFU mode if you use iTunes to backup your iPhone which I don't since I back everything up to my iCloud.

    I have seen WiFi problems regarding iOS 6 all over the Web. These were problems with the WiFi, but how many try WiFi other than their home WiFi. Your home WiFi is a problem. The fix for some users is DFU Mode Restore of iPhone. If you would like to try a DFU Mode Restore.

    "You can't.  I think NI bought Pharlap, and they do not offer board support packages (BSPs) for non-NI PXI controllers.  There is no way to get LabVIEW-RT running on a controller not purchased from NI.  You will have to use a standard RTOS like Linux,VxWorks, or QNX.

    You can install LabVIEW RT ETS on a third party PXI controller just as if it were a PC.  Check the requirements that a PC needs to have in order to run LabVIEW RT ETS.

  • Third party installer and LabVIEW/VISA RT engines

    I would like to use a third party installer (Q-Setup) for a stand-alone application I recently built using LabVIEW 7.1. The program was developed to run on Windows XP/2000/98 and requires serial communication with multiple devices. I realize LabVIEW and VISA RT Engines are required for this application, but am unsure if there will be issues with using a third party installer especially for builds across the different windows platforms (i.e., different RT engines for different platforms). The Application Builder provides options to 'silently' install the RT engines without problems, but I would really like to use a third-party installer. If anyone can provide some feedback about how best to include the RT engines using a third-party installer, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

    There are not different run-time engines for different versions of windows. Both the LabVIEW run-time, VISA serial only  run-time, and regular VISA run-time engines are .msi (Microsoft installer) files that are available on your LabVIEW CDs. If the third-party installer can handle .msi files, you should be okay. One thing to mention, though. You said the app is for XP/2000/98. LabVIEW 7.1 is not supported for Windows 98 and neither the 7.1 run-time or application will install on 98. The last version of LabVIEW to support 98 was version 7.0.

    I have attached an example that uses the "Call Library Function Node" that accesses the "user32.dll" file that is responsible for manipulating with the windows such as minimising it. 
    After opening the VI you have to enter the name of the window you want to minimise, you can hard code that as a constant. Also on the front panel the control "nCmdShow" can be changed to dictate the action you want to do with the window. 
    Furthermore, please look at the Microsoft Developers Network to find more useful ways to use the property node in your project.

  • Can I use third party DAQ boards with Labview real time?

    I have an Adlink DAQ 2010 card that I curently use with labview. Will this card also work with Labview real time? What requironments are there for 3rd party cards to work with Labview real time?

    Your question is too vague since you give no information as to this third party application. Is it an application you wrote? Is it an application that you cannot change? Does it have a programming interface? Can you eliminate this third-party application and control the photon counter yourself?     As described in the web links below, the only way to run LabVIEW Real-Time for ETS on a third-party system would be to follow the procedure for desktop PC computers. You may find that your third party PXI controller may meet the requirements listed in the below link and you will be able to run Real-Time on the controller. If you decide to do this, you will need to purchase the LabVIEW Real-Time Desktop Deployment license (also linked below). After purchasing the deployment license, you will be sent boot disks that will install the real-time OS onto your system. There is no need to purchase Pharlap ETS from Ardence directly.

    Instead of using LabVIEW Real-Time for ETS, you could use LabVIEW Real-Time for RTX instead. This system allows you to run Windows and the Ardence Real-Time eXtensions (RTX) real-time kernel concurrently on one machine. Currently device support for LabVIEW RT for RTX systems is limited to RIO devices. This is all described in the below link.

  • LabVIEW Interface for third party EtherCAT slaves

    I have a third party EtherCAT hardware (slave) and software. I am using and industrial PC with Intel PRO network card as the EtherCAT master. This setup works fine, and I can talk to the EtherCAT modules using the thirdparty software. 
    Now, I would like to develop a LabVIEW interface to talk to the EtherCAT slaves for testing purposes, since most of my test programs are written in LabVIEW.
    Is it possible to write EtherCAT software in standard LabVIEW 2013 using an inustrial PC as Master?
    If I use the DLL of the third party software, do I need LabVIEW Real Time module for etherCAT communication?

    Hi rosh,
    I think it will depend on how the DLLs are designed. If you call the DLL at the right rates, you may be able to avoid using LabVIEW Real-Time. If you want to run LabVIEW Real-Time on your PC, you would need to replace the existing OS with LabVIEW Real-Time. Once you do that, you may be able to run your existing DLLs but compatibility is not guaranteed. This KnowledgeBase article describes the process of determining if your DLL is compatible with LabVIEW Real-Time (NI PharLap ETS is what installs when you replace the OS). For our other Real-Time operating systems on different targets, you would need access to the original source code so you could recompile for the new target.

     i am using third party DAQ (HBM MGCplus ML01 amplifier).. i installed the instrument driver in my labview, wer i cud see my DAQ in Functions - Instrument I/O - Instr Drivers - mgcplus..
    Now pls let me know how shud i configure the inputs and other settings when i interface the daq with labview, whereas with NI DAQ, we configure using measurement and automation explorer..

  • Need information on USB frame grabber Labview compatible (planning to buy)

    Hello all,
                      I am looking USB based frame grabbers which are compatible with LabVIEW only.  I need atleast 50 frames/sec acquisition rate. I am using PULNIX P2013P analog or monochrome CCIR camera with LabVIEW 8.2 version. Please suggest me any of such frame grabbers even third party products if they are available and also only compatible with LabVIEW.

    There are no USB frame grabber cards provided by NI. The only form factors that are supported for frame grabbers are PCI, PCI-e and the PXI platform. If you are interested in using USB cameras, then all you need is NI-IMAQ for USB driver (the driver is not officially supported by NI) and a USB camera that is supported by the driver.

    Les's answer about 488 is right on. 488.2 is just a superset of the original 488 - nothing about the electrical interface has changed. You question about low cost cards has a different problem however. The GPIB functions in LabVIEW will only work with an NI card. If a vendor offers a VISA driver for their card, then the LabVIEW VISA functions will work but I have had some problems with very old instruments and VISA. If the vendor offers GPIB drivers for LabVIEW, then use those. If all they have is a DLL that you need to call, then you've got a lot of software development ahead of you. All of this means is that the cost of the hardware is just a part of the overall cost of a project. If you manage to save $100 on the board and then have spend a week or two o
    n the basic GPIB software, you really haven't saved anything.

    The PCIe and PXI cards you mentioned are specifically RIO.
    But you managed to program a USB-6225 with LV FPGA?  I'm not even sure there is an FPGA on there to program.  It is an M series DAQ board.

    I know what you are asking and in the other thread, you were told it was for 2010 only. There is some support for 2009 but not for your old version. Go with the dongle suggested or upgrade your version of LabVIEW.

  • How do you add a third party sensor to LabVIEW for Lego Mindstorms​?

    I recently purchased an IR Sensor from Mindsensors (DIST-Nx-Long-v3) which I need for a SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping Application) that I am developing using the LabVIEW for Lego Mindstorms software.  I installed the Mindsonsors IR Sensor, and it works under NXT-G and RobotC, but am having trouble finding a way to get LabVIEW for Lego Mindstorms to install the sensor.
    The Mindsensors website gives the following instructions for installing the IR Sensor:
    1.Unzip the folder mindsensors.com LVEE
    2.Open a blank vi in LVEE
    3.On the Block Diagram Go to Tools->Advanced->Edit Palette Set...
    Unfortunately, on the Block Diagram of the LabVIEW for Lego Mindstorms, there is no "Advanced->Edict Palette Set" under Tools.
    As an alternative, I consulted the documentation that came with LabVIEW for Lego Mindstorms.  The Schematic Editor of LabVIEW for Lego Mindstorms lists several sensors, i.e. the Lego Mindstorms sensors and several Hi-Teach (HT) sensors, but there are no procedures listed in the documentation for adding other third party sensors to the Functions Palette.
    So, how does one go about adding a third party sensor to LabVIEW for Lego Mindstorms?

    As you can see from my Word document, I am a little light on the proper terminology.  That's because LVLM comes with inadequate documentation.
    I have already followed your recommended protocol for installing a 3rd party sensor (in fact, its the protocol recommended by Mindsensors) with the application set in the Remote Mode (.lvrbt), and it does create a sub-palette with all the Mindsensors functions on it.  But when I drag the Mindsensors icon to the Block Diagram and select "Distance Sensor," the Distance Sensor (an IR sensor) doesn't work (even though the Mindsensor's Distance Sensor does work with NXT-G, RobotC and LVLM under other circumstances (see below)).
    If I repeat the above process with the application set in the Direct Mode (.vi), I also get the sub-palette with all the Mindsensors functions on it.  When I drag the Mindsensors icon to the Block Diagram and select "Distance Sensor," the Distance Sensor does work.
    What I need for my mapping application is for the Distance Sensor to work in the Remote Mode.  I called NI tech support and the first engineer told me to simple drag the Mindsensors Functions (.vi) onto the Block Diagram.  I did this, but when I selected the Distance Sensor, the icon appeared, but the sensor did not work.  Since I have no idea what's under the hood of the vi or a function, I assumed that simply dragging the vi/function onto the desktop didn't install the vi/function properly.  I went back to the Applications Engineer, and he confessed that he did not understand the LVLM product.
    My frustration is being punted to new people, none of whom so far (other than you, of course) understand LVLM.
