IPod/iPad cannot be used, required software not installed

Hi,
This problem just started after the last update to the latest iTunes for Windows.  When connecting to the computer, iTunes shows a popup that says:
"This iPod cannot be used because the required software is not installed.  Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install the 64-bit version of iTunes."
I've ran the installer and done that several times.  I've rest both iPod and iPad, but I still get the above error when trying to connect.
Bob

I finally had success!!  I saw in another forum a post where the person had the same problem and removed QuickTime and then iTunes, restarted, and then re-installed iTunes.  This person said it worked.  So, I took it a step more and did this:
1-Uninstalled QuickTime
2-Uninstalled Apple Moble Device Manager
3-Uninstalled Apple Software Update Manager
4-Uninstalled iTunes
5-Restarted Computer
6-Installed iTunes
7-Restarted Computer
After that, all is well.  You might not need to do all that, but that is what worked for me on my Windows 8 machine after the last iTunes update.

    Hello Negaz
When you uninstalled iTunes, did you uninstall it by using the article below or just uninstalled iTunes? The best practice is to remove not only iTunes, but also other associating software in the order that the first article give. If that does not work, then check out the second article for more troubleshooting options for connecting your iPhone to your computer.

I am using an older ipod touch with version 4.2.1 software (newest available).  I am using itunes 64-bit version 10.7 (newest).  when trying to connect i get this error message...."This ipod cannot be used because the proper software is not installed.  Install 64-bit itunes software."  As mentioned 64 bit IS installed.  Everything was working just fine a couple weeks ago.....no idea what happened!  I have run all the troubleshooting guides mentioned by apple....uninstall, reinstall, reset ipod, etc.
No clue what is going on.....any possibility there is a "hidden" file within itunes that is causing this problem?
Thanks in advance to all who help!!

Yes...have done this numerous times.....even found some files that normal uninstall does not delete (.itl type).
This really weird because I have several other computers in the house that all work just fine.  ALL run Windows 7, ALL have iTunes vers 10.7, ALL sync just fine.

  • Ipod touch required software not installed although reinstalled 3 times, help please

I had an ipod nano and itunes work fine, i bought new ipod touch 4G and connected it to itunes and get a message that say this ipod cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the itunes installer to remove itunes, then install itunes again. i have done this 3 times with latest itunes but still the same message ad ideas? Any help would be appreciated thanks

If you have a PC I would try:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
    or
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP

  • Required software not installed

When I open itunes with my iphone plugged into a USB I get the following message
"This iPhone cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, the  install iTunes again."
I have done this several times and it makes no difference. I have also run the troubleshooter which has, again, not worked.

Try disabling any antivirus and firewall software you have installed, then remove and re-install iTunes. Don't re-enable the antivrus/firewall until after your first successful sync.

  • Iphone cannont be used required sofware not installed

I finally got ITunes reinstalled on Windows XP after many laborous hours.  Now when I plug in my Iphone 5 I of course get a new message.
THIS IPHONE CANNOT BE USED BECAUSE THE REQUIRED SOFTWARE IS NOT INSTALLED.  RUN THE ITUNES INSATLLER TO REMOVE ITUNES THEN INSTALL ITUNES AGAIN.
Really, I have uninstalled and reinstalled this thing I cannot tell you how many times.
If anyone can help, please let me tell you I am by no means very computer savy with some of the lingo.  I need exact instructions if you know what I can do.  I am afraid to uninstall it again because of how long it took to even be able to pull it up after the reinstall.

EDIT: sorry, I initially posted the wrong instructions for you. We're supposed to be trying a standalone AMDS install not a standalone AAS install.
Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, does your device connect without that message now?

  • After 2.0 "Iphone cannot connect due to software not installed" error

Hey everyone, I have an original iphone 8G running it on XP (which is the first problem im sure) I have never had a problem updating untill now. I just updated to 2.0 It took about 20 min to do the whole update process. When it finished, i got an error message saying the iphone cant connect due to an unknown error with an error code "0E0000015" I tried re installing itunes, tried deleting itunes, and downloading the newest version, But nothing is working. I plugged it into my macbook, and it works perfect, it finds the phone and shows the new 2.0 software. But nothing on my XP, it wont connect. Any help would be awesome! -Jason

  • This iPad cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes then install the 64-bit version of iTunes

I have seen others post this same question but the answers provided does not resolve my problem. My iPad Air is running iOS 7.1.2. I have been using this same computer for three years. It has Windows 7 home premium, service pack 1,  64-bit Operating System, Intel 3.4GHZ computer and 16.0 GB .  I used this same computer with my iPad2 for several years. I purchased an iPad Air a year ago. I never had a problem with either iPad using iTunes. About a week ago, my computer would no longer recognize the iPad Air. I thought it must be a driver problem or iTunes somehow became corrupted. I uninstalled all of the Apple products except for iCloud and deleted any Apple software left in my Program Files and Program Files (x86). I then downloaded from Apple, iTunes64Setup.exe which is a 110,833 KB program. I installed the program without a problem. It installed Bonjour, Apple Software Update, Apple Application Support and iTunes. These programs I had previously uninstalled. I then brought up iTunes.  I now plugged in my iPad Air and a popup message appeared "This iPad cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes then install the 64-bit version of iTunes". OK, I did as instructed. I used the iTunes installer to remove iTunes then ran iTunes64Setup.exe. I brought up iTunes and got the same message. "This iPad cannot be used because the required software is nt installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes then install the 64-bit version of iTunes"  In general, I have found the Apple software to be robust and reliable. This situation however is very disappointing. I am hoping that someone has an answer that I can use to resolve my problem.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it, which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
The section Install missing components has advice on breaking down the iTunes installer into the individual .msi files which might prove useful if one component, such as Apple Mobile Device Support, won't install normally.
In your case I suggest you start with a clean download of the setup file using the direct link. If reinstalling AMDS alone doesn't work try tearing everything down again.

This ipad cannot be used because the required software is not installed
I got this message  when i update itunes on my pc, I  have uninstalled itune and re instail using  revo unistall  over 10 times and gone through every thing solution on this forum to no avail. I please I need help.  I did try extracting  intune using winrar  and got his message "iTunes requires a newer version of Apple Mobile Device Support.  Please uninstall both Apple Mobile Device Support and iTunes, then install iTunes again."   I have tried to do that repeatedly. Although iTunes will install, Apple Mobile Device Support won't.  It looks like it is installing and then it rolls back and says "Apple Mobile Device Support wasn't install on your computer.  The installer encountered errors before Apple Mobile Device Support could be configured.  Your system has not been modified.  To retry these operations at a later time, please run the installer again." Please I need help.
    Thanks.

Try uninstalling iTunes, apple mobile device support and apple appliation support (via the control panel. add/remove programs) then reinstall iTunes.
THere seems to be a bit of a conflict between the most recent iTunes update and  possibly a windows update.
I had to uninstall all 3 of those programs to get my iPad to syn last night

  • HT1386 Why can't I sync my iPad to pc, it says this iPad cannot be used because the apple mobile device service is not started

Why can't I sync my iPad to pc, it says this iPad cannot be used because the Apple mobile device service is not stated, the last time they were synced was December and I had no problem.

Log in as an Admin User on your PC. Type 'Services' in the search area above when you click on start. (or see control panel and select Admistrative Tools.)
Select the Services shortcut.  In the window that appears with your listed service, navigate to ipod service, Apple Mobile Device service, and, Bonjour Services.  Doubleclick them to get the property page.  Change startup to automatic, click apply.  Then click start,
There is a known issue that when iTunes updates it incorrectly sets the Service startup type - this is normally due to installations on Vista and win7 services and  drivers that run in the Local Sstem requiring Admin account permissions that are not always granted with User Account Elevation, when running installations or updates in User account.
Normally the Local System is set to inherit the User account permission token when being set up - but Apple in their infinite wisdom have a higher token in place for their services.  so a standard user cannot derogate the required elevation, even with the UAC to admin prompt, since the local system is owned by the Machine account and only Admin, bBackup, Restore, Machine, operator accounts carry the same descriptor permissions on process ownership to set these services correctly.
Third party security programs, such as Kaspersky can also limit installations by User account installations, which adds to the problem.  I have had a few installations fail, even in Admin mode - because Kaspersky sits on par with the Main Machine Administrator account for watching program and installation directories and registry keys - (which have  higher privilege levels in some respects than the ordinary Admin account you normally start a new machine in before you add any other user accounts- all very confusing - but that's Microsoft all over for you.
Follow Ralph's advice if you do not have the necessary software already installed.  You should install Apple's Application Management Software - which will look after the installation of all required elements for you and notify you of updates pending.  In options have it set to Notify only - not all updates may be requred, and this option allows you to see what is being installed.  It is good practice to set all updating software to Notify only - especially any thirdparty software - much of which carry all sorts of little 'extra's' you  may not need or want.
It is also good practice to keep an eye on your Program and Features option in control panel, just to see what is being installed and when - including Windows updates.
Sorry about the long reply, but with December being your last sync - a lot can change in the meantime. Best be prepared.
    Best wishes, Ct
