IPod Touch 3rd generation is not turning on and gets really hot when I plug it in but is not charging...

I have an iPod Touch 3rd generation and yesterday I was using it and noticed that it reset to a different time zone and when I dug a little deeper realized that it reset the date to December of 1969. I just went in and changed it all back. I was out of the house all day today and didn't take it with me, when I went to use it, it wouldn't turn on. I assumed it was dead, so I plugged it in and got ready for bed. I realized that the charging screen never appeared and it never made the little noise it does when you plug it in. I picked it up and right near where the charger plugs in, it was very hot. I use it when it'd plugged in from time to time and it is NEVER that hot. I then tried to plug it into the computer where it again didn't do anything and didn't show up as a device that was plugged in on my iTunes. Again, it got very hot very quickly. I am using the cord that came with it and an actual Apple brand wall charger. I don't know what else to do. Some people said to hold the two buttons down for a little bit, but nothing happened on mine. Please help!

Warm is normal, too hot to handle, literally, is not.
If you're concerned, make an appointment at your local apple store and have them check your charger out.

Likely that the battery is dead. I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store to confirm. Apple will replace the battery for this price:

Sorry, but without a working home button it is not possible to reset or restore your device. You should visit an Authorized Appel Service Provider or Apple Store to get it serviced. More information: The iPod ran out of battery late thursday night and I plugged it in to charge. The charging symbol appeared but within 20 minutes, the ipod had gotten very hot and had gained no charge. It hasn't been dropped and it hasn't gotten wet. It's a year and a half old. I use an otterbox as a case, but this problem began three days ago, despite my having been using the brand of case for over a year. It's super important that I find a way to fix this. Help please?

I was trying to restore my iPod touch because it was locking itself and flashing. When I tried to restore it, the iPod turned itself off completely and won't turn back on. I've tried pressing the lock button and the home button at the same time, and I can't do anything from my computer because my iPod isn't showing up under Devices or Computer. If I put it in the USB port it opens iTunes, but isn't showing that it's plugged in. I have used different USB cords, switched USB ports, and tried charging the iPod, but it still won't turn on. You can always take your Mac in and give it a check-up for free. What will cost you is the repairs you select to have preformed. I recommend shutting your Mac down before you go to bed. Problem solved. There is no need for you to keep it running if all applications are quit. Why do you need it on?

i am having the same issure and i did put it into recovery mode and itunes tells me to restore, but when i click restore it tells me that "software for this iphone is not currently available. make sure you have the latest version of itunes and try again" but it's obviously not an iphone.

- Are you also having problems with the Home button? Maybe it is sticking a little since to take a screen shot you depress the Home and Power/Sleep buttons at the same time.
- I have not seen your problem discussed here before.
- I would first try resetting the iPod:
Reset iPod touch: Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Next would be to restore the iPod via iTunes. First from backup and if problem persists, restore to factory defaults/new iPod.
