Is Tech Care Live assoc with Apple?

My iMac gave me a security alert today and with it indicated that I should immediately call 866-782-9808.  The alert would not go away or allow me off the page.  They charged me $399.99 for a cleanup, which I am okay with if they are a legit business. But if they are not how did they get ahold of my computer? I am too old for this.

You were the victim of a crime, but there's little chance of prosecution, because the perpetrator is almost certainly in another country with a weak legal system.
The only way you can be sure that the computer is not compromised is to erase at least the startup volume and restore it to something like the status quo ante. The easiest approach is to recover the entire system from a backup that predates the attack. Obviously, that's only practical if you know when the attack took place, and it was recent, and you have such a backup. You will lose all changes to data, such as email, that were made after the time of the snapshot. Some of those changes can be restored from a later backup.
If the attack happened too long ago for a complete rollback to be feasible, then you should erase and install OS X. If you don't already have at least two complete, independent backups of all data, then you must make them first. One backup is not enough to be safe.
When you restart after the installation, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process for a new computer. That’s when you transfer the data from a backup in Setup Assistant.
Select only users in the Setup Assistant dialog—not Applications, Other files and folders, or Computer & Network Settings. Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled.
Reinstall third-party software from original media or fresh downloads—not from a backup, which may be contaminated.
Unless you were the target of an improbably sophisticated attack, this procedure will leave you with a clean system. If you have reason to think that you were the target of a sophisticated attack, then you need expert help.
That being done, change all Internet passwords and check all financial accounts for unauthorized transactions. Do this after the system has been secured, not before.

    Did your friend call Apple or did someone call your friend saying they discovered his computer was hacked? Apple would never call--the latter is a common scam.
    I can't imagine Apple referring someone to a third-party help source when there are many Apple Authorized Service providers. To me the whole thing smells of yesterday's diapers.

    Apple doesn't use pop ups - those are mostly from scammers. After you call your credit card company, consider this:
    Did you allow the scammers access to your computer remotely? If so, I would seriously recommend that you make a backup and erase your hard drive completely. Then reinstall the OS either via recovery if lion or later or get out your original install disks and start over. After that, only bring over your important files just in case the scammers left anything behind on your machine.

    I have tried with an Ipad Air and Ipad using Op System 8.0.2 to mirror their contents to the screen of my Samsung Flat Screen Flat TV via the latest make of Appletv.I have spent over 2 hours going through all settings etc with Apple Customer Service Live Chat.They cannot find or replicate the problem and says it is all working fine.My TV screen displays, when i go into mirroring,  "ready for connection - on your device launch Allshare Cast".Nothing happens although i have agreed with Apple Support that all settings are on and are correct.Can anyone help please, as Apple Support cannot?

    I need to speak to someone about a way to fix the only means of communication the schools have to get ahold of me about my children if something were to happen.  Ive tried to schedule appointments that are within the driving limit for me due to being disabled but that was blown off like oh well not our fault.  I was told I could send it in but then no way for me to know the school has called.  Ive been a diehard apple consumer that brags about your products and when there is an issue I get this.  Its not right and needs to be fixed.

    If you're talking about calling in to Apple Support, a Senior Technical Advisor is the highest level of technical support available.

    I believe Express Lane can provide live chat via email. At least this is what I've just been told by someone in Applecare Agreements Administraton. Haven't tried it myself because right now there's a system glitch and it's not accepting my particular serial #.

    I'm all of a sudden missing old mail in my inbox labeled .live - I used mBox to set up my hotmail account with Apple Mail. It's not in the trash nor on my hotmail account online anymore. Hmmmm??? I already tried to rebuild and my mbox folder in the library seems fine. Anyone?? I only have about a month's worth of mail which made me think I had mistakenly selected some 'time frame' for keeping inbox messages but that doesn't seem to be the case. 

    Try re-indexing the mailboxes. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.

    My MacBook warranty will expire pretty soon. So, I ordered my Apple Care Protection Plan from Apple online store in Thailand since September 9, 2009. It arrived this morning (September 15, 2009).
    When I try to register Apple care for my machine, Problem was starting. I do following on screen process, put my Macbook Serial No. and Apple Care Protection Plan registration No from package. Screen Show "We're sorry, but this registration number is not valid. Please check your information and try again."
    I tried to contact Apple Care representative in Thailand. He was kindly enough to ask Apple online Store about this. He came back with answer that there are some problems about Apple care registration and I have to wait for week for response!!
    Why product from apple online have this kind of problem? And customer have to wait for one week without knowing anything!!

    You should be fine. The good thing is 1) you bought it from Apple and 2) you have contacted them about it before your initial warranty expired. Just be sure to follow up with them. If you haven't done so... you may want to give them a call back just to get a case number so you can have something to reference in case they don't get the problem sorted out before you warranty expires.
