ITunes not recognizing iPod Classic 6th Gen

Hi, here's hoping somebody can help with this problem.
My iPod has 105GB of music on it and it works fine but within the last few days has kept requesting me to run a disk check to fix files which I've done but it does not connect to iTunes.
After running disk check it reports that files are fixed but clicking on details, it reports that volume created on 15/09/2014 refers to a disk that appears to be a non-windows XP disk!
I would certainly appreciate some help in trying to sort this problem out.
With thanks, Brian.

Hi brianfrombourne end,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your iPod is working but is not recognized by iTunes or your computer.
I recommend starting with these two articles to troubleshoot the issue:
iPod appears in Windows but not in iTunes
iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows
From:
iPod not appearing in iTunes
These articles have a lot of good steps that can help, whether your iPod is not showing up in iTunes or Windows.

Jeremy

  • ITunes not recognizing iPod Classic

Ok, so this post is going to be a little long since I need to explain what is happening with my iPod Classic 160gb.
I noticed a few days ago that songs were 'disappearing' on my iPod when I would listen to it through iTunes on my computer (When I say disappearing an exclamation mark would appear between the song number and the song title in iTunes-- when I would try to start the song iTunes would automatically skip to the next song-- acting as if the song wasn't there). I disconnected the iPod after I was done listening, shut down the computer and turned off my iPod.
The next day I started up my computer and plugged in my iPod. Windows came up and said that it recommended a disk scan. I ok'd the scan. Afterwards, all of the songs had disappeared off my iPod and now iTunes doesn't recognize my iPod. Windows recognizes the iPod-- itunes does not.
**As a side note, in the iPod menu, in settings, the window on the right hand side of the screen show about 37GB of free memory. This was about how much was left with all my music on the iPod. However, if you go into any other menu, eg songs/artist/playlist it says there is no music/artist/playlists.
I've gone through all of the troubleshooting steps listed for the iPod classic and windows 7. iTunes is still not recognizing the iPod. I've also tried on another computer-- stil no luck.
I understand that the classic cannot be reset without iTunes (this is a stroke of brilliance on Apple's part). What can be done if after all of the troubleshooting steps iTunes STILL does not recognize my iPod? Has this iPod given up the ghost?
    Thanks, Mike

    Hello there,
I would first start with this article assuming you are running Windows. Be sure to attempt each and every possible troubleshooting procedure as needed to try and resolve the issue.

  • ITunes not recognizing iPod Classic; tried many solutions but none seem to work

    Dear Apple Support Community,
I just dug up my 6 year old iPod Classic from the grave and would like to start using it again as my HTC's headphone jack is extremely faulty lately. My iPod Classic is completely empty - I have no music, no photos, nor videos on it.
My problem is that on my Windows 8 Laptop, Windows is able to read the iPod, however, iTunes cannot. I went over to the Support page and tried almost every recommended solution out there, and nothing seems to work.
    I have:
    Tried different USB ports
Performed a Restore/Recovery after selecting 'Format' from Windows ExplorerIt is interesting to note that, whilst iTunes doesn't read the iPod normally, it did show up in the button (Spotlight button?) next to the iTunes button when performing a Restore
Uninstalled and Reinstalled every Apple application and program from my Laptop, including iTunes, Mobile Support, Bonjour, and more, and also, deleting any remaining folders related to Apple.
I have tried alternatives to iTunes such as CopyTrans and Syncios, but all seem to fail.
    Troubleshooted my iPod various times
Restarted any Apple related Service as well as any Processes from Task Manager
Searched for Updates on Device manager -> Apple Driver and everything is up to date
    It's worth pointing out that:
When opening the iPod folder in Windows Explorer (after enabling Hidden Folders), inside the 'iPod_Control' folder, there is no 'Music' folder; not sure if this is intentional or simply because there is no music file on my iPod.
The Software Version (which displays prior selecting 'Restore') is 2.0.1. If this is outdated, the option to Update Software is greyed out and unavailable.
My iTunes is up to date.
iTunes does tend to freeze up when attempting to read the device, but is perfectly fine after a while, it just does not display the device (implying it must have failed to detect it).
It is the first time using iTunes on this laptop (laptop is 4 months old), and has never had an Apple Device connected to it before.
iPod and iTunes used to work fine 6 years ago on a different PC which is no longer at me.
If anyone could shed some light on this problem, I would greatly appreciate it. Please do not hesitate for any further information related to both iPod or Laptop.

  • Itunes not recognizing ipod classic, windows does, help

I have an ipod classic that has not had new music installed on it for over a year. I have vista 64, vista recongnizes it itunes does not. I checked connection to itunes with my sons itouch and it works fine. I have done everything i can think of through apple support except buy support including uninstalling itunes, quicktime, etc.. and reinstalling, did not work. I installed itunes on a clean version of xp on another computer, with the same results. I have put ipod in disk mode, itunes still does not recognize it. what else is there to do? format ipod? will this help?
Thank You in advance, grandpa will be very please to have new music to listen to.

Hmmm. If no iTunes is recognising it, it might be worth trying a disk check on the iPod itself. Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors:
[Check your hard disk for errors|http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Check-your-hard-disk-fo r-errors]
Does the disk check find/repair any damage? If so, can you get (at least) enough recognition to do a restore in iTunes?

  • Does iPod Classic 6th Gen support a headphone remote for pausing/playing, adjusting volume, and advancing the track?

I know that the 7th Gen does support this feature, and my iPod video (5th Gen) does not.

    The listing for Apple's EarPods
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD827LL/A/apple-earpods-with-remote-and-mic
under Compatibility, shows it supporting back to "iPod classic 120GB (2008)."
The official list of iPods does not actually name iPods after the 5th gen model by a "gen" name, but if you look at the list
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353
it is clear which one "iPod classic 120GB (2008)" refers to.  There is an earlier "iPod classic" ("6th gen") model from 2007 that is apparently NOT supported by the EarPods.  But it's possible that Apple's older headphones with remote control works with it.

  • 160GB ipod classic 6th gen cant be recovered by itunes 12

My 160GB iPod Classic (6th Generation) cannot be recovered by iTunes 12. I plug the iPod into my Macbook Pro and it shows up in Finder. Then an iTunes message appears: "iTunes needs to prepare your iPod for recovery. Please leave your iPod connected." Then it is says that it is preparing my iPod for Recovery and then that dialog window closes and the iPod screen is a flashing Circle with slash and the line "Do not disconnect." under it. At this point the iPod is not visible in the side bar in iTunes 12 and this message goes on with no progress. I have left it for a while doing this and there is no change. After a while I'll disconnect and it if I try again the same thing happens. I have a dual-booted computer with both Mac OS Yosemite and Windows 8.1 and on the Windows 8.1 side iTunes is able to restore and set-up the iPod, therefore I know the iPod, the USB, and iTunes are all working. All my music is on my Mac side though, so I need to get this working on the mac side. I need help getting iTunes 12 on the Mac Side to restore my iPod.
    Thanks in advance for help!

disk utility is normally correct. you can try putting ipod in disk mode and control + click > get info on the ipod. see what the capacity is and it should have the 160 GB. in disk utility you can try verify disk. I would try to return the hard drive.

  • My new iPod Classic (6th gen) is completely frozen. Should I send it back?

My iPod seems to be defective. I just upgraded from my last iPod classic (4th gen) to the newest model for more space, so I now all the tips and tricks to reset and restore a malfunctioning iPod. I have tried everything: checked the hold button, reset it, connected it to various adaptors, connected it to the computer, but nothing seems to work. I bought it maybe two weeks ago, and I don't have the receipt (stupid move, I know), so I'm wondering, since I registered the product, if I can send it to apple for fixing or replacement. Thanks.

I'm an idiot. Thanks to anyone that was willing to help anyway:)

  • My ipod classic 6th gen. has a dark blinking screen with lines over it.

My ipod classic 6th generation has a dark blinking screen. Any suggestions?

    Greetings MarkSaved1989,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your iPod only shows a blinking screen, first try to reset it using the steps at this link:
Reset your iPod - Apple Support
If the iPod can't be reset using these steps, try restoring using the instructions found here:

  • My iPod Classic 6th gen won't charge on wall charger and it's not even recognized on iMac or Windows

Hi! I hope someone can help me with this. I have had this 160 Gigs iPod Classic for a couple of years now and never had this problem before. I have tried to connect my iPod with several cables (which work fine with my iPod Touch and iPhone, by the way), two wall chargers, 2 windows computers  and an iMac and none of them recognize my iPod anymore, it doesn't even appear in Disk Mode.  I have also reseted it several times and still nothing.
It's was working fine but it ran out of battery now so it just says "Connect to Power" when I try to turn it on. What else can I do?

The iPod itself has bent pins or the cable?
If the connection on the doc connection inside the iPod is bent you'll need to get that part replaced.
Indeed that problem would lead to a false indication and give you the problems you just mentioned above.
Can you take a picture of the connector and upload it here?
I've repaired many iPod classics so, I think I can help you out. !!!

  • Itunes 11.1.5 not recognizing ipod classic 160gb

After updating itunes my ipod classic 160 gb is not recognized by itunes and now simply crashed...  any help please?

Well, my 3rd gen and 4th gen iPods from 2003/2004 (as well as my 1st gen iPod shuffle) still work fine with the latest iTunes, so Apple not supporting older devices is nonsense.  The owner DOES need to take care of them, so that they do not break.
If the iPod "crashed" and is not responding, the first thing to try is a Reset (restart)

  • Itunes not recognizing ipod touch, but recognizes ipod classic....?

This is my second time syncing my ipod touch and I've had my classic for forever and just use it to play in my car. I tried shutting down and it still did not work. Help? Thanks a bunch
Also...my computer recognizes both of them (Asus, Windows 7)

  • Help!  Itunes not recognizing Ipod Nano.  Have tried several things already.

Itunes does not recognize my ipod nano (6th generation).  When I plug it in to the computer, nothing happens (except it charges).  I have tried several of the recommendations (reinstalling itunes, resetting ipod, etc. etc.)  I have Windows 7 on my computer with the latest version of Itunes.  Interestingly, when I plug my Ipod into my other computer (which still has an older version of Itunes), it syncs right up and is recognized.
What can I do to get Itunes to simply recognize my Ipod?  I am beyond frustrated.

  • IPod Classic 6th Gen - Distorted sound :-(

Hey folks, my friends iPod Classic 80gb 6th Generation iPod has a crappy distorted sound when tunes are played from it.
He sent it away to get fixed thinking it would be the headphone jack that was the problem - they got back to him and said that it was the Logic board at fault, and charged over £79.99 +VAT for this repair.
When it came back, all seemed to work okay, except a very short battery life.
A week later, the iPod froze with no backlight (the menu was still visible but not reacting to any button presses)
Nothing happened when the charger was plugged in, so we held the Menu Button + the Select button, and it rebooted successfully however the orginal problem came back of distorted sound....:-(
Very unhappy as £79.99 was a lot to pay for it be broken again so soon.
Can anyone shed any light onto why this may of happened?
Was he right by saying it was the logic board at fault?
    Cheers
    James

I haD the same issue, and was thoroughly ticked off until doing some research and then trying couple things.
I was able to change the volume limit, that WAS set at half.  I adjusted it to max volume, set a lock passcode, and away I drove.
Then, upon hitting "play", I began to get a little ticked off.  I realized after a few minutes, I couldn't hear anything playing.
It was so quiet- and I-95 is noisy, with me regretting buying another Apple product, after is wrote not to.
So- after reading through a couple of these threads, I just adjusted the volume limit, and VOILA!
    It reverted to 50%.
So, I did a total wipe, factory-reset it as new iPod.  I checked setting=>volume limit and it was at the 50% point again. First thing that I did was go to the last selection under settings menu, "reset settings" and noted it doesn't delete sync days, solely sys settings.
I adjusted the volume limit to 100% immediately afterwards, set a new passcode and then.....
    Hit play.
It worked. Plays just as loud as my original 3rd Gen iTouch.
So Dylan1219, maybe try that?  It's so simple, I am shocked that's how I fixed it.  It had been set- and always snapped back to the 50% mark.
So, MAYBE that could solve the problem..?  I have hearing loss from rock & roll and concerts, etc...so, thankfully this isn't a bunk product.  Just had a bunk setting.
It has stayed at Max level for hours now, and can state it solved it for me.
I would hypothesize, all iPod classics are made the same, except for the "options"  of storage and color.  Maybe a small "governor" or a piece of extra firmware is added after the fact, or only "every 9th iPod" who knows for sure...?
