IVD May Send Me Back to a PC

I switched last year from a Media PC (Sony) because my son assured me MACs were much easy to work with when it came to anything graphic. I am not so sure about that!
I have been converting my old VHS tapes to digital form (easily done so far) and editing the results using IMovie (also easy--so far my son was right). Burning the edited films using iDVD 6 has been a frustrating experience.
After hours of waiting for iDVD to prepare the movie and then waiting excitedly for the result I have over the past two week-ends for two different projects got halfway through the burn stage and then have my DVD disk ejected with the following message:
BURNING FINISHED. ERRORS WERE FOUND DURING THE PROCESS. THERE WAS A PROBLEM DURING MULTIPLEXING/BURNING.
Not a very helpful or enlightening message--I could have gotten that kind of help when I used PCs.
I have tried different disks from several manufacturers, all are rated at 8X or less. Can anyone help me finish the burn stage so that I have a DVD of my old home movies? Would buying and using Toaster help?
Thank-you.

Hi Gary,
Last night I converted a 1 hr 40 min MPEG [1.5 Gb] to 10 .dv files [approx 21Gb in total] using MPEG streamclip [available here http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/24055
I then imported the .dv files into iMovie [roughly 21 Gb]
I then shared that to iDVD [3.3 Gb out of 4.2 Gb]
I then burned the resulting iDVD project to a Disk Image [4.1 Gb]
Playing the relevant iMovie/iDVD/Disk Image file at each stage showed that all seemed to be ok [to my untrained, not very fussy eye]
So it can be done - even tho it takes a longer to do.
Ideally, iMovie/iDVD should be able to handle everything ok, BUT it's not totally Apple's fault. There are different ways to encode the data, different ways for the data to be used, etc.
Similar issues are happening with other "standards" - PDF's, RAW files, etc.
Fortunately, these forums and the very helpful people who use them make like much easier, and can usually help with most problems.
Best of luck !!
Peter

  • Apple sent me a new iPod touch to replace the one that stopped working. The new one has the same problem as the old one. Should I send it back?

I bought an iPod touch 4th genertion in August 2013. About 3 weeks ago, iTunes told me an update was available for my iPod so I clicked update. It then said it had detected an iPod in recovery mode and I had to restore my iPod. I tried to restore it when another pop up appeared saying an unkown error occured and it was unable to restore my iPod. I talked to someone on the online help page and they said I needed to talk to someone on the phone because it was too complicated to explain. The first person I spoke to on the phone could not identify my problem so she got her supervisor who said I needed to send it in for repair. I sent it in and yesterday I received a brand new iPod in the mail with a letter saying they could not fix my old iPod and this was a replacement. I plugged the new iPod into my computer to restore it and everything was fine. It said my software was not up to date so I clicked update and the exact same thing happened with the new ipod. It told me to restore my iPod and then said it was unable to be restored. They replacement arrived yesterday. Should I send it back?

What is the exact wording of the error message? It may be that there is a problem with your computer and is causing the problem, not a problem with the iPod.

  • Sending ibook back if can't find help

please, after two days of tech support with apple and my isp provider AND the local authorized dealer still no connection. i am going to have to send it back.
out of the box, it never has conneceted. everything indicates that it recognized the network but it just isn't connected. i carried it in to the AU and he picked up his network just fine.
i have a built in wireless airport, and a wireless router. i also have an IMAC that is conncected with no problem and a windows PC that is also conncected.
i get a message that my password is incorrect (i know i am typing in the correct one) tried the router password, modem password and the computer password. also message saying, "connection failed" in the set up assistant.
i plugged the modem ethernet directly into the ibook and it still didn't connect but my isp provider insist that it is the set up in the ibook not them.
also, a message saying no conncection.
    1. can i set up another network? and go from there?
    2. is there something i am not doing that everyone at apple is missing????
    3. is there anyway to "tap" into my IMAC without the internet conncection on the IBOOK?
please any suggestions would help. i really don't want to return the ibook but i am running out of people to help me.
    thank you in advance,
    movie lady.

I have a couple of suggestions for you, depending on what you want to do. I apologize if any of this is a reiteration of what was already mentioned.
First, if you want to hook the ibook right up to the cable modem then you may first have to power cycle the modem. Depending on the cable modem that you are using, and all but a few do this, it will remember the MAC (media access control) address of the ethernet card it was plugged into when it was initialized-- precluding the use of other ethernet cards with the modem. If its of any help power cycling of the modem while it is plugged into the ibook may help with the connection. Otherwise, you may have to contact your ISP and ask them to resend whatever commands they need to in order to have the modem reacquire the MAC address. (Each network device has its own unique MAC address.)
If you want to ibook to connect through the imac via airport and the imac has airport, then you need to open the sharing pane of the system preferences application and enable internet sharing from the imac's ethernet port through its airport card. Set the name of the network to whatever you like and make sure that the ibook can see it. Once you do this, you need to disable the firewall under the firewall tab of the sharing preference's pane in order for the ibook to connect to the internet. (The reason is that the firewall protects the imac on all network ports, not just the one connected to the internet. As such, the imac will reject all information that it does not request from either connection. The trouble here is if the ibook sends a request to the imac for some information from the internet, the imac will reject the ibook's request because, from the imac's perspective it did not generate that request. Alternatively, you can manually configure ipfw, but that's probably overkill for your needs.) After this, you should be good to go.
Third, if you are trying to use a router, then you first need to make sure that its configured properly-- see your documentation for this one because each has its own eccentricities. But a few tips include making sure that the wireless connection for both B & G is on to ensure compatibility, adding all computers to the access control list if you are using one, and ensuring that all the passwords match.
As I mentioned above, you may very well need to power cycle your cable modem, or even worse call your ISP in order to change devices.
    I hope this helps.

  • Windows always "send to back" when I open an application, so I cannot edit anything

    Hi,
I just updated my "OSX Snow Leopard" to OSX Lion last night. But something wrong with the windows when I first use the system today.
When I only an application such as MAIL, after about a second, the window will be "send to back" automatically - the window became gray and I cannot edit anymore. That means I can use the window for one second then I have to clike the window again to let it in front!
That drive me crazy. Any suggestions?
Or just tell me how to reinstall the OSX Lion system!
    Thanks.

You may have the Safari window in Full Screen mode.  This is where an app's window (Safari in this case) takes up the full screen, as a "space."  When you run another app, the Safari full screen space moves over to take you back to the Desktop space, to open the window for that other app.
To take the Safari window out of Full Screen mode, move your mouse pointer to the top of the screen, to drop down the Menu Bar.  At the top right corner of the screen, cick the button with the two arrows pointing in.  This takes the window out of Full Screen mode, back to the Desktop space.

  • Send to Back Puts Image Behind MASTER Elements

I have a full screen image on a master slide.
When I Send to Back an image on a slide using that master, it sends it behind the full screen image, effectively making it disappear.
It doesn't make any sense why master elements are "live" and part of this layering. I've tried locking elements on the master, but still no fix.
    Any advice?

This is unusual in my experience. The reason you may want some master elements live as you call them is they may be screening or partially masking an image (photo) so need to be above it. Are you using your own master or a shipped/3rd party one? You can always bring your slide elements forward or backward one layer at a time Opt-Shift-Com-B or sent to back and then bring forward Opt-Shift-Com-F.

  • Safari will automatically send me back to the previous page

Every time when I click a link on any website, it will automatically send me back to the page where I just was; or if I'm at the homepage and enter a website, it brings me back to the homepage. It only happens once per page but it is very frustrating having to do everything twice.
    Thanks,
    Tiffany

HI Tiffany and welcome to Apple Discussions...
Empty the Safari Cache from the Safari Menu Bar, Safari/Empty Cache
    Relaunch Safari.
If you still have problems, go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
If third party add ons aren't the issue, try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file.
Go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari and see if that makes a difference. If not, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder. If Safari functions as it should, move that .plist file to the Trash.
One more thing. Please click My Settings on the right side of this page and tell us which Mac you are using and which Mac OS X. Thanks!

  • Almost DOA hard drive- send it back or destroy it?

i have an almost DOA hard drive (WD eads) still under warranty. It worked just enough time for me to transfer some sensitive business information before the SMART status is all red and interdicts the drive from even mounting.
i can mount it on the desktop in an external firewire dock. It clonks and wil interrupt transfers, but it mounts. So I thought about mounting it over firewire to write zeros before sending it back.
    Questions;
    1) what do hard drive manufacturers do with returned SMART-failed drives? do what they can to refurbish? junk them? parts them?
    2) can the nature of a SMART status failure see that a drive be refurbished?
    3) given that sensitve info has already been written, should i just destroy it even if i can zero/3 pass/7 pass it?

I've read that while the head only changes the states of bits in certain places and always the sames places (where they're suppose to), that that magnetism also leaves its trace along side the bit path and that zeroing or writing over the bits doesn't necessarily erase those traces.
It's not as much a problem as it used to be. Early drives did not use track following, and tracks might not always write in exactly the same place. To allow for positioning inaccuracy, they left a small gap between tracks. They provided commands for the drive that could move the read head a bit to ether side to help in recovering data if a track was recorded too much out of position. If the original data happened to be recorded with the track out of position on one side, and the zeroing was written out of position on the other side, it might be possible to read the original data using the offset read command.
Certain agencies exlploit this phenomenon essentially bypassing the hard work needed to read the actual state of bits in their regular place.
There is still hard work involved. To do it properly, the platter must be taken out of the drive so it can be read by a system with a head made to read a very narrow track. This can be adjusted to pick up the edge of the original data only, and not too much signal from the adjacent tracks. Because of the narrow track, the signal will be weaker than normal, so getting accurate data is not easy, assuming there was enough of a position difference during the zeroing to leave much of the original.
There is another possible way to recover overwritten data. The exact signal read will depend slightly on what was on the disk before the latest track was written. With enough signal processing, some of the overwritten data may be recoverable.
If valuable data is known to be on a particular drive, it might be worthwhile to try these methods, but nobody is going to waste thousands of dollars just to look at a random refurbished drive received as a warrantee replacement. Also newer drives position tracks more accurately, so there is less older signal at track edges, and the gap between tracks is much smaller. This makes data recovery from track edges less likely. The higher data densities of modern drives also makes it a lot more difficult to guess the previous state of a bit by analysing the read signal. Even 90% accuracy would be useless since it would mean almost all bytes have errors.

Resetting may not be enough. When you add or remove a fair amount of files to the player you should do a Cleanup>Reboot to get rid of broken links ect. & in general tidy up the dri've. Instructions can be found here. Although there seems to be none for your particular player the instructions used for the Zen should bring that mode up. DO NOT CHOOSE RELOAD OS? (will erase your firmware don't want to that.)? http://forums.creative.com/creativel...cending&page=3

  • Charging issue - other ideas before I send it back?

I was given an 80GB iPod Video for my birthday last October. Since then, I've used my iPod on numerous occasions, although not on a daily basis. My iPod still seems pretty new to me, and I hate the thought that the battery is shot but I have no reason to believe otherwise.
    *Here's the scoop:*
Recently, I left my iPod on its dock overnight as I listened to music and charged it. The next morning I removed it from the dock and it was dead within seconds. I have tried charging it numerous times since then and it won't hold a charge to save my life.
Each time I pull it off the wall charger it shows a full-battery logo but upon attempting to play one song, it flashes a message about not having enough battery and then dies. When I pull it off the USB it simply dies immediately.
I have tried different USB cables and I have tried different wall chargers, but to no avail. I've read through posts, surfed apple.com's FAQ and forums, and troubleshooted (using the 5 R's recommendation).
I'm currently staring at my struggling iPod as it tries its hardest to gain a charge while connected to the computer...and I'm also gawking at the AppleCare Repair Service package they've sent me to return it to them in.
I'm fully prepared to send it back to the company but my concern is maybe I've overlooked another option? Apple sent me a confirmation email after I submitted a service request form and in it they explained that a fee may be assessed if they find my iPod is not in need of replacing, but only needs servicing. I'd like to avoid this if there is something I can do for it myself (even though I highly doubt it).
I just once again toggled the Hold switch and followed through by holding the Menu and select button at the same time. It lit up with the Apple logo and then faded out. I've watched it light up with the Apple logo a few times since then and each time it fades away and returns to the "Please wait. Very low battery." logo with the animated spinning symbol below it. Meanwhile, I can only do this while it is connected to the computer or I can't do it at all as, well...it dies.
I am succumbing to the fact that I need to send it in, but this is where I turn to you for any last minute ideas before I ship this baby back.
Thoughts and suggestions welcome. Thanks for your input and your time.

    So I figured...
I just wanted to see if there was anything else I could possibly try before I sent it off as Apple seems pretty stringent on their policies.
I have scheduled a pick-up with DHL this afternoon, so it's pretty much a done deal and it's going back.
    Thanks.

I can't sign on to icloud. It says I need an icloud account. I click the help option it send me back to the same page. I reinstall it nothing.
    Download the iCloud Control Panel.
To enable iCloud on your Windows PC, first set up iCloud on your other devices, then install the iCloud Control Panel for Windows (Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 or Windows 7 required).
ok I can't seem to set up iCloud on any device I don't understand... Ive already installed it three times.
    Turn on iCloud.
From the Windows Start menu, choose iCloud Control Panel.
Enter the Apple ID you used to create your iCloud account and select the iCloud services you’d like to enable.
For mail, contacts, and calendars, you can use iCloud.com or Outlook 2007 or later.
there is no iCloud control panel but I click on i cloud. Then entere the Apple ID you used to create your iCloud account - WHAT!!!!? where is this I keep trying to find out how to create and iCloud account but I keep getting these stupid directions!!!
    Enable automatic downloads.
To enable automatic downloads for your music, apps, and books, open iTunes > Edit > Preferences > Store and select Music, Apps, and Books.* (Requires iTunes 10.5 or later.)
    - This is the only step that makes sense and already did it...
Turn on iCloud for the rest of your devices.
To get the most out of iCloud, set it up everywhere.
    This is soooo frustrating!!!!
Also I want to be able to look at duplicate songs on my itunes but after I downloaded the new version I can not figure out how to get that back. If the duplicate setting isn't in the new itunes I want the old version back.

Did you ever resolve the iCloud problem.I am in the same position and its driving me mad!!! If you have a link to an solution I would appreciate it.
