Java too complicated?

I don't write software for a living, but I have had to write small utilities & apps periodically to get certain things done. I've worked with a few languages over time- but I would never say I "mastered" anything. Lately my focus has been Java, and I must say it is quite overwhelming! How many years do you think it would take to really know what you are doing with Java? I can't imagine less than 5. By "really" I mean more than just core java syntax - using the class library effectively.
I've been working with Netbeans, JBoss, and the J2ee tutorial examples.
It requires a 12 page howto document to load ONE of the example apps into the IDE, configure JBoss, Ant, etc, and run the app!
It looks to me like I could spend several years just learning a few pieces of JBoss. And by then, 2 major versions of JBoss would have flown by & not to mention Java proper and the many other common utilities & infrastructure would have changed.
I realize Java, JBoss, & Netbeans are all different things, but many of the OS projects out there use an application server and other utilities - so it's just all part of the learning curve to me. And I thought Netbeans looked like the "training-wheels" IDE when compared to eclipse, so I thought I was taking it easy on myself by using it...
The point of my post: I'm really giving this everything I've got, and am starting to feel like I am way less intellegent than the average fella. Is it normal to have to do 2 weeks worth of research to get your average open source j2ee project to compile and run?

That's not a problem with the language at all.
Also, I'd consider a 12 page configuration manual for a piece of enterprise software, a large IDE, and a development environment together a rather small document.

The problem isn't Netbeans but JBoss.

It took me 2 years in fact to get Linux to install and run on my laptop...

Java - too many levels of symbolic links

Today I've tried to launch eclipse and I noticed this strange error :

Inspecting the /usr/lib/jvm folder revealed the issue:

How certain are you the superdrive ONLY is at fault?
That depends on your skill level, if you grew up tearing things apart and putting them together, its absurd how easy it is.
For some however its too daunting. On a general skill level for the "average" person its about a 3 out of 10 in difficulty.
Can you order same? yes.

File too big or too complicated

I cannot convert the file I need. It says it is either too big or too complicated. What else can I do?

Try disabling the 'Recognize text' function and then convert the document again.

Help! Lenovo G500 Laptop too complicated for user

Hi,
My son is overwhelmed with his new Laptop and am trying to help but just too many screens & choices for him to get used to! He upgraded from another laptop brand which had a simpler interface and wondering if it's possible to set this up simpler i.e. one screen/desktop. Just a "traditional" type with links for internet, documents, photos, etc?
It's just too complicated with Start, Desktop, sidebar, toolbars, etc.

DOM to String & String to DOM too Complicated

Hi Java Comunity,
I'm just wondering why one of the simplest tasks on the XML development such as creating (parsing) a DOM from a String and viceversa (Obtaining the XML as String from a DOM Document) is so Complicated.
Obviously I'm a newbie in JAXP, but not in XML, the common sense dictaminates that these tasks should be as simple as something like:
String xmlString = "<mytag>...</mytag>";
org.w3c.dom.Document xmlDoc = new org.w3c.dom.Document(xmlString);
and
String anotherXmlString = xmlDoc.getXmlString();
I already know how to perform these conversions, but I'm just wondering why you Java Developers enjoy making suffer all the programmers in the world with such complicated (and not intuitive) ways to perform simple tasks.
Comunity, what do you think???

I am now getting transcoding errors when I try to burn a DVD. Usually this can be overcome, but my latest project resists burning. Is it possible for a project to be too complicated?

    I am using Première Elements 10 on a Mac Pro
    I was trying to burn to DVD-VIDEO widescreen, although I tried all the
options in desperation including folders!
    Space required was about 3.7 GB, but instead of filling the space
available, as it didn¹t work, I tried 2.5 GB without success.
    I use all Timeline menu markers including red ones to indicate the end
of a movie, as there are several in the project. Scene markers and stop
markers can therefore be close. Where there were red frames around button, I
moved the buttons away from each other as required.
    By complicated, I meant that my movies tend to include transitions
throughout movies and stills background music titles - clipart and
dialogue, which I considered might be too much for the system to handle!
    Since I posted my query, I have taken a lot of transitions out of the
movie (I usually choose a default transition of ³cross dissolve² between
each video/still in the set-up). This has worked, and subject to re-viewing
the movie, I am hoping that it is the cure and I will reset the defaults
accordingly.

Auto download Java too silent

I use the activeX control to auto-download Java when users start my web start application. It works fine, but there is one problem with the auto-download. It is too "silent". It dose not indicate that the installation is in progress. Not even a hourglass. What can I do to solve this?

Bookmarks are shown permamently on the left of the screen.How do I get rid of them,so that the screen is not limited. I also do not have "print" oe "file"tabs at the top. I think it is all too complicated.

The Bookmarks are shown permamently down the left had side of the monitor acreen. I cannot find a way of removing them. I usually see the Bookmarks via the Firefox tab at the top left hand of the screen .
You information pages refer to tabs such as "file" ,"print", "view" etc on top , but I do not have these either.
