JDeveloper, ADF, lack of support and bleak future

Hi,
I'm a seasoned Java and .NET developer, used to many environments and frameworks. A happy user of Oracle databases.
For a very Oracle oriented client I started with a team of developer a project using JDeveloper (no choice). After 4 months of using JDeveloper, ADF to build web sites, here are some thoughts I would like to share. This remarks only focus on that products, because I have a lot of respect for the Oracle databases and had a lot of success with them.
I am starting to get depressed about the very few blogs (most from Oracle) talking about JDeveloper and ADF, the lack of books, and the Oracle forums.
Moreover, most of the time you never get an answer to your problems, sometimes untested not working 'solutions', and a very very few times a working solution. Help is sparse, the community is missing.
If Oracle wants to promote its framework, it has to boost the number of tutorials, examples and support.
Googling about ADF is most of the time a non sense since you always land on the same 3 blogs and the Oracle forums.
Proof of non use by the community ?
If you try on www.indeed.com to find statistics about JDeveloper or ADF jobs you get another frightening proof.
Sometimes you find a piece of code or a tutorial that may help, but you realize it works only on some specific release of JDeveloper.
What makes me angry is when you ask why your code works on the x.x.x.x version but not the newest version, and the only answer you get is stay with x.x.x.x version (I won't bother to fix your 10 lines or code or even give you a direction to do it (maybe coz I don't understand myself were the breaking changes are)).
JDeveloper is damn too slow ? You should have a dual-core and at least 2 Go of memory, you poor thing ! Is Java for rich people ?
Debuging is a nightmare. Compared to Eclipse or others it is not practical at all.
I'm happy when I can create a few pages drag and dropping controls. Business components are also a good thing. It speeds up my development. But since development is not just UI and generating business components, I lose a lot of time every time I want to write code, every time I do something "exotic" it becomes a pain in the ass.
My problem here is that the architecture and JDeveloper constraint the developer a lot. I don't even talk about the fact that everything is only Oracle database oriented (openess ?). Even changing your page layout is a pain. Positioning controls is non trivial. As a whole, I would say that this whole thing imposes you to adapt to it, it doesn't adapt to you and your way of working.
Most results I saw look like the Oracle websites.
I could go on about the various bugs and problems that plague JDeveloper. Like the refactoring (when usable) that leave old and annoying stuff in your model XML, like the bugs in the diagrams, like problems related to auto-binding on the page and manually changing controls ID, various synchronization problems between pages and backing beans, adding upload is a mess, OrdDomain types are buggy, regions doesn't work well in the designer, and so on...
My point is that I feel the whole thing is not mature. And Oracle seems to fix some issues with the release of JHeadStart. Sometimes you fix things by integrating JHeadStart stuff. JHeadStart is probably a great thing and a time saver if you don't do too much "exotic" screens and code, but does it means that JDeveloper+ADF and classic development becomes a second class citizen ?
This is sad, since the ADF framework and JDeveloper look good and are worth of a more widespread usage. But marketing and support are way way far behind other commercial and open-source solutions. When I see what is planned for JDeveloper 11 and I compare it to others (Java or not). When I look at the developers needs and expectations, I feel we are losing the race.
Maybe Oracle would like to hand over some of the framework to the community, but my feeling is that the community is already commited on other exciting and less constraining frameworks and tool, and this community may well work in a way that doesn't fit Oracle vision. Future will tell.
Cheers.

Hi,
thanks for the detailed comment. I appreciate the time you spent writing this up as this helps to improve the product. Below is a first - quick and brief response to some of your statements.
... for documentation and tutorials
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/adf/learnadf.html
Especially the ADF Developer Guide for 4 GL developers earns a lot of praise among J2EE developers.
http://download.oracle.com/docs/html/B25947_01/toc.htm
... for books
http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/java/jsf.html

Of course samples need to be created to some point in time with a specific version. We have SRDemo as our main - maintained - reference demo I suggest you download this sample from OTN using help--> check for updates. Note that SRDemo contains code solutions for most developer cases and also is available in 10.1.3.1
I'm happy when I can create a few pages drag and dropping controls. Business components are also a good thing. It speeds up my development. But since development is not just UI and generating business components, I lose a lot of time every time I want to write code, every time I do something "exotic" it becomes a pain in the ***.
What is exotic, and what are the questions you didn't get an answer for ? I see that this is your first posting on OTN, so I am wondering under which account you posted the other questions that did not get an answer.
Googling about ADF is most of the time a non sense since you always land on the same 3 blogs and the Oracle forums. Proof of non use by the community ?
Isn't OTN a community ? I don't think that we need another discussion forum and looking at OTN it appears very active.
I don't even talk about the fact that everything is only Oracle database oriented (openess ?).
Not true. Please prove your claim.
Even changing your page layout is a pain. Positioning controls is non trivial. As a whole, I would say that this whole thing imposes you to adapt to it, it doesn't adapt to you and your way of working. Most results I saw look like the Oracle websites.
Now you are barking up the wrong tree, blaming ADF for what is JavaServer Faces layouting. You don't have to use JSF but can go for JSP /Struts and/or Swing development. What is the view layer technology of your choice that allows you to do better layouting ?
I could go on about the various bugs and problems that plague JDeveloper
Yes, please post them all
... regions doesn't work well in the designer, and so on...
Of course, because regions are not officially supported. JDeveloper 11 - I know you don't want to hear future - will have full templating (going far beyound of what facelets do) and region support
My point is that I feel the whole thing is not mature. And Oracle seems to fix some issues with the release of JHeadStart.
JHeadstart is a consulting offering and not meant to fix the product.
... but does it means that JDeveloper+ADF and classic development becomes a second class citizen ?
No comment for this statement as it is based on a wrong observation
This is sad, since the ADF framework and JDeveloper look good and are worth of a more widespread usage. But marketing and support are way way far behind other commercial and open-source solutions. When I see what is planned for JDeveloper 11 and I compare it to others (Java or not).
Note that only a fraction of new features in JDeveloper 11 leaked out so far or have been mentioned in the recent statement of direction. JDeveloper has many more features that we don't yet promote because the software isn't available.
Please note that we give ADF to the community. Its just we are not giving it to the open soutce community but the J2EE community (JSR-227)

well just been in touch with support to find out if a new bios is coming out to support graphics cards that most people have. • Xperia Z3v - Lack of support and synergy with existing Xperia software

So far I like my Xperia Z3v but don't love it. Among the reasons, the most glaring one is the disconnect from Sony Mobile Support and Verizon Wireless, neither cares about owners of the Z3v...
I understood that the Z3v was a re-branded and modified Z3 for the Verizon network, so some minor differences (size, battery, etc.) would be present. I was unaware, however, that Sony would basically turn a blind eye to the phone and Verizon wouldn't do more than basic support (if it 'aint broken, we don't care).
    Here's what I mean:
    - No PC companion support (Z3v will not be recognized by the program. I've done a support chat with Sony Care and they said that was because Z3v is only supported by Verizon and not Sony....Imagine if Apple said that about the 'Verizon' version of iphones...no itunes integration, users just had to upload files directly to iphone with no programs or interface... )
    - No Media Go support (same as above)
    - No Wireless connect to computer (it's tied to the PC Companion issues, I believe)
    - No way to transfer contacts or files from previous phone (again, PC Companion) without buying an extra connector
For a company that is seemingly struggling to stay afloat in anything besides Playstation related stuff, you would think Sony would try a little harder to be there for customers who took a gamble and bought their product.
I have a few days to decide if I want to keep this phone and if I don't hear any noise about Sony working on a way to get the Z3v to play nicely with their PC Companion and related software, I will likely return it and pay the re-stocking fee to get a phone that is actually supported by the company who made it.

Thank you Rickard for your response, but the standalone installation did not result in any changes.
I recognize it was probably Verizon's fault to some extent with their desire to create a custom version of the Xperia Z3 instead of just using the standard model, but I still cannot see why the PC Companion or Media Go cannot be updated to recognize and work with the Z3V system and structures.
I have been a life-long sony fan and have been happy with the way Sony reacts and supports their users for the most part. That is probably why I feel this slide in support is so discouraging.
Again, I don't see any other brand of phone makers (that I know of) turning a blind eye to their newest phones just because it's on a different network or a slightly different build (mechanicaly and software wise). My understanding is that all i-phones must be different slightly for Verizon and AT&T networks due to the network and setup requirements, but Apple doesn't limit itunes compatibility with just one network's version of the phone, it works across all Apple products. I made the leap from Apple to Sony because I like Sony, but this is not a good start for my experience with this phone and Sony's software.
I do appreciate your support and recognize you have limited ability to fix the situation, so I do hope you forward my sentiments to the appropriate internal teams.
    thanks again.

  • Jdeveloper ADF  4 DBs: oracle10g and SQLServer

We have 4 international partners with databases (3 Oracles and 1 SQLServer). All databases have exact the same data model.
We have to develop a WebApplication(s), that do all data available for small number of users.
Is it possible with one central WebServer and one Web Application, that connect to 4 DBs?
Or it is better to use 4 WebServers with 4 Installations of the WebApplication?
Is it possible to develop this System with JDeveloper11, ADFs and using then Tomcat as WebServer?
    Thanks in advance,

  • Frustrated with the lack of Support and Attention to the Thunderbolt

I was under the impression when I upgraded to the TB, that it was/is the "Flagship" for 4g Android phones (at least it was back in March).  Unfortunately, that's not the case and I should of kept my Droid X a little longer.
Although the Droid X is not 4g, the device now has Gingerbread and seems to be getting a lot more attention from Verizon, then the TB..
I marked this down as lessons learned.

The DX is a great device even by todays standards. Anything that is as solid as the DX that has the latest OS is a keeper in my book. I to did the exact same thing and " upgraded " to the Thunderbolt but quickly regretted that choice. I got the TB the day it was available and figured I'd deal with some issues. I even went as far as Emailing HTC and calling VZW on a regular basis whenever I had an issue they might want to be made aware of but that got me no where. Then the update came out and that seem to add even more issues. So I threw in the towel and got the Droid Charge as a replacement for the Thunderbolt. I don't email HTC I have called VZW a couple times and that's it. Sure it's a Samsung and it might never get an OS update but for now it's a actual upgrade as apposed to the Thunderbolt.

  • Maximum Number of Columns that adf table can support in JDeveloper 10.1.3.1

    Hi All,
    I'm using Toplink 10.1.3.1 . In JDeveloper 10.1.3.1 .
I'm Trying to display the columns of a table which is having the more than 380 columns.
When I'm trying to display the columns in adf table, it is getting hanged. The console of the displaying that "too long".
If Execute the Application with nearly 50 columns, It is working fine.
what is the Maximum number of columns that adf table can support. Is there any other solution for my problem.
    could anyone help me out.
    Thanks in advance,
    regards,
    Satish

    Hi,
I am not sure there exist a limitation in columns and if the application hangs then this probably is a bug either in the business service or the view (which can also be due to that the server runs out of memory because of the created object instances).
However, in my opinion a table with 380 columns is a loud cry for denormalization

  • ADF Faces RC browser support and browser market share

    hi
Given the current browser support in JDeveloper 11g (ADF (Faces RC)), for IE 7.0 (not IE 6), FF 2.0, FF 3.0, ...
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12839_01/install.1111/e13666/OJDIG.htm#BDCJBGBC
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/htdocs/jdeveloper11gfaq.html#P0
(Why Oracle has chosen to do so has been discussed before, in threads ADF 11g: Browser support for Internet Explorer 6, Browser certificaion clarification JDev 11gr1, ...)
Given some information available online about browser market share ...
    http://marketshare.hitslink.com/browser-market-share.aspx?qprid=3
    http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp
    http://www.w3counter.com/globalstats.php
    http://www.thecounter.com/stats/
... it looks like about 20 to 30 percent is still Internet Explorer 6 (which is not supported by ADF Faces Rich Client components).
Which role should this play in a decision to choose for ADF Faces Rich Client components to build an internet application today?
Maybe some can share their experience in making such choice.
    many thanks
    Jan Vervecken

    Hi Jan,
(e1) That's a really good example, but the deciding point is different than browser version imho.
In that example, the hospital control its technological infrastructure so I would say it's safe to ask the users to upgrade as the hospital team is actually going to do it. In this case it depends if the hospital itself is willing to upgrade its apps, not the users. However, the patients are a special kind of users of which at least a small amount will be physically disabled to some point so you'll have to evaluate the accessibility potential of ADF Faces RC and, as most rich libraries, it's not that awesome. So, in that example, I think you would have to use pure Trinidad instead as its accessibility support is a bit better or at least reduce the usage of rich features in RC (like no drag-drop since it's a nightmare for both blind and mobility reduced users).
(e2) imho, no it wouldn't be safe to use RC if the target date is within 1 year since you don't control the user base in that example and not supporting a browser might cut your customer base and thus reduce your revenue.

  • ADF Faces: is mixing JSF RI and ADF Faces tags supported?

    Hi,
I'm looking at ADF Faces as a future possibility for our application that is currently based on JSF RI.
When looking at the ADF Faces demo it strikes me that all pages are almost completely built up from ADF Faces tags.
    For instance
    af:form
    af:commandButton
    af:inputText
are used instead of the equivalent core jsf tags f:form, f:commandButton and f:inputText
I'm wondering if this is mandatory if we would like to use some ADF Faces components mixed within our existing application.
In other words: are ADF Faces tags supported in the environment of conventional JSF tags? And mixing ADF Faces JSF components with JSF components by other vendors?
Another thing that strikes me is that pages are constructed using ADF Faces tags for any and all markup content.
I guess this is meant to support several different clients (normal browser applications, mobile clients, voice activation over telephone) using different renderers.
In my experience abstracting markup this way inherently means loss of control over the exact markup that is sent to the client. This is not acceptable for all projects and customers.
Is embedding ADF Faces tags within template HTML, within f:verbatim tags or not, supported?
    Regards,
    Joost de Vries

You absolutely can mix JSF RI and ADF Faces tags. This is very much supported! You can swap in <h:form> and <h:commandButton> and <h:inputText>. Our versions support some features that the JSF tags do not, as described in our release notes.
Your point about using tags to produce all markup is a very cogent one. For some projects, absolute control over HTML will be a necessary requirement, so we do support that style of development. But we believe strongly that the future does not lie in constant handcoding of HTML, but instead in building more powerful, flexible, and reusable components and assembling those into pages. This was one of the themes of a talk I gave with two coworkers at this past JavaOne.

  • Lack of support for Canon G7 and G9. Alternatives?

I am really disappointed about the lack of support for the Canon G9, and looking at the list of compatible cameras (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306835) I notice that Canon G7 - even if it does not have a RAW format, is not supported either.
I am thinking that the purchase of the G9 may have been premature and that I may need to sell it and get another cam that is supported by Apple/Aperture.
What would you guys do? Is there a cam out there similar to the G9 at the moment that has a Apple-supported RAW format?
    Best regards,
    Kjell Are Refsvik

I think the camera closest to the G9 that has RAW support from Apple are the Panasonic DMC-LX2/Leica D-Lux 3 twins. Don't know where you are, but in the US, the Panasonic costs about $400. 10MP, 28-112mm (35mm equivalent) Leica lens, very compact body, and RAW output. The Leica costs $599, and has that classic look.
I don't know much about that cameras, but you may want to investigate.

  • How to implement hierarchical structure of managers and reportees using jdeveloper adf

I want to display hierarchical structure(which can be expanded and compressed) with 3 columns(Employeeid, fist Name, lastname) of managers and his reportees on selecting a top level manager.
In this i'm going to use programmatic view objects.
    I have employees table.
    Here is my detailed requirement:
On selecting a user from drop down list, i want to display the list of users reporting to him.
From the displayed list on selecting a manager, list of users reporting to him has to be displayed in a tree format with the correspoding just being listed below the current selected manager
    Example :
Top Manger  has been selected from dropdown and clicked submit.
    Output(a table as mentioned below):
    Manager1
    Manager2
    NonManager1
    Manger 3
    On clicking manager1,
    output:
    Manger 1
      Manger11
      Manasger12
      Nonmanager11
    Manger 2
    NonManger1
    Manger3
on clicking manager1 again, tree has to be compressed and the output has to be just the same as first output.
Please help me on this by sharing information or any references on how can i achieve this implementation using Jdeveloper adf concepts.
Will be waiting for the inputs.
    Thank You,
    Dev

Obviously, you can only display one picture.  So then the question becomes which picture to show.  Therefore, you will have to create some sort of preference of one pattern over another.
I would use a FOR loop so that you can loop through your available patters and their possible results.  Use the Conditional Terminal on the FOR loop so that you can stop the loop on the first match.  Then you just wire up the selected value for the ring outside of the loop.

  • SQL Azure Support Team And Lack of Support.

    Hello,
I purchased an Azure Support Plan seeking help as a
Developer.  For more than two Month the Azure SQL Engineers failed to help me.
I wonder! Is my case beyond help or Politics and racism are involved.
    1-
My site has a political message. It is about launching a much needed political movement in the Middle-East. The Site invites people to register as members and hopefully bearers of this Political Call.
This Political Call is not to the comfort of some powerful groups that could be behind the lack of support that I am getting.
    Details of the case.
    2-
On my local machine, the process of posting a completed Registration Form is completed without any error and the data is stored on the local MS SQL.
    3-
When posting a completed form over the internet, however, one gets a blank page and the process of Registration is aborted.
    4-
The Connection String that connects my Asurewebsite to the already linked Azure SQL is not formed correctly, and so I believe.
    5-
I used “MSDeploy” to upload the site to the Azure Platform, “All the files and the MS SQL”.
On the Azure remote, I already linked an Azure SQL to my Website, 1gb and paying for it. This Azure SQL copied its schema and data from the MS SQL that “MSDeploy” uploaded.
On the Azure Platform, I can manually access my linked Azure SQL Database, edit its schema, as well as, the
listed data included during the process of uploading.
    6-
The Problem: The process of linking the Azure SQL to my site generated the required Connection
String on the remote, however, the Connection String of my Web.Config file on the remote still refers only to the uploaded MS SQL.
Believing that this could be the cause of aborting the registration process I decided, after many unsuccessful attempts to include the Azure generated Connection String to the Web.Config file, to seek the help of the Azure SQL Engineers by
purchasing an Azure Support Plan as a developer, more than 2 Month ago, and paying for it.
    7-
I submitted a Ticket, asking for help to connect My Azure Website to the already linked Azure SQL using the already generated Connection String.
Instead of focussing on the connection issue the MS Azure SQL Engineer kept asking me to read irrelevant, mutually referring
and retired articles including one that deals with how to connect to MS Server 2005.
Many emails were exchanged for about 4 weeks and absolutely there was no intention on focussing on the Azure SQL connection need.
    8-
Three weeks ago, I submitted another Ticket, voicing my displeasure of the treatment that I received.
However,  the second Support professional kept trying to pass me on to other people, departments and finally suggested to set up a Tele-conference that includes many participants. Believing that it is another way of avoid
the issue,  I insisted on only discussing my SQL connection need, but this insistence was completely ignored.   Details of the
    Site are:
    A-
The URL of the Site is:
    http://ozza.azurewebsites.net/.
    B-
The Azure “Ado”  generated Connection String:
     Server=tcp:fv9wkz2vsk.database.windows.net,1433;Database=ArabUnity;User ID=ArabUnityServer@fv9wkz2vsk;Password={**my password**};Trusted_Connection=False;Encrypt=True;Connection Timeout=30;

Most ADF sites are internal to a company or just for specific users. There are however several public site built with ADF.

  • Netflix and lack of support for iPhone

Is it just me? I've been trying to stream a movie via netflix on the iPhone 4, however, every time it starts saying Loading Movie... it sort of "crashes" back to the video selection screen. Of course my first thought is to search every support and search engine known to man but that yielded no results. Netflix has no support for the iPhone app on their website at all, why release something when there's no support, isn't that called a beta? Please help if anybody has experienced this problem. Thank you in advance.

I have the same exact problem on my iPod Touch 3rd gen 32GB. On my iPhone 3GS however on the same wifi network everything works fine.
When the iPod Touch first boots up I get the Alert: "Cannot reach netflix.com. Please try again later." (subsequent times, this error is not shown, but the movies still do not play) Pressing ok continues to launch Netflix and shows movie "Like"s and selecting Instant Queue menu has no problem showing my own Instant Queue. The problem occurs when you attempt to Play a movie. Pressing Play results in a message "loading...", then for a brief second the Netflix landscape red screen appears and returns back to where I pressed the Play button.
Tried updating to 4.1 and tried reinstalling Netflix without any luck.
