JPEG multiple editing. Is it destructive?

Hello... Could you help me please?
I'm testing Lightroom and I selected to "Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF, and PSD files" and " Automatically write changes into XMP" (from catalog settings metadata options).
My question is :
Will JPEG image quality be deteriorated to any extent if I change (inside lightroom only) its developing settings (like, exposure, blacks, color saturation, croping..., ...) frequently?
Thats because I really do that several times.

If I understand the whole lightroom concept correctly, LR only records the "changes" to an image and leaves the original image file totally unaffected.
HOWEVER... Lets assume that you now want to do something with the image file with the LR adjustments. You will now need to export the original JPEG with all the recorded LR adjustments that have been saved in the XMP file to a ALL NEW JPEG file which WILL BE ALTERED.
The newly created JPEG will be an ALTERED JPEG with all the adjustments that you've made via LR. It would be the same as if you had pulled the jpeg file into Adobe Photoshop and done the alterations.
The IMPORTANT thing to remember is that UNTIL you've exported the starting image file to another format, ALL the modifications are like notes and are not really modifying the original file. If you pull up the image file in another software package, you will be seeing the UN-Modified image.

Having searched around I can't find an answer to a simple question. If I open a jpeg and edit it "with or without" layers, then flatten (In the case of layers) the image and select the "Save As" command and rename the file or select "As A Copy", will my original jpeg suffer from and adverse effects if I don't save the original file ???. I keep hearing about destructive editing and layers etc. I have tried editing the same photo three times without saving the original and the file size is the same, suggesting that its non destructive, but would like a definitive answer. Note: Lossless rotating and flipping requires the image size to be a multiple of 1 MCU block (i.e. 8x8 for a jpeg image without chroma subsampling, 16×8 for 4:2:2 subsampling and 16×16 for 4:2:0) as the top and left edge of a JPEG image must lie on a block boundary. When a losslessly cropped JPEG image's bottom or right side does not coincide with a block boundary, then the rest of the data from the partially used blocks will still be present in the cropped file and can be recovered.

16bit? Pixels extending beyond the canvas? (from a crop with delete unused pixels turn off). Have you previously been saving PSD files?
IME you sometimes have to tell Photoshop that the first save of a session is JPG, and it remembers from there on. The way to 'tell' Photoshop that JPG, or PDF, or PNG etc are now your preferred format is to Ctrl (Cmd) click on that format in the Save As drop down list. So long as the file does not have parameters that your chosen format does not support, then this should work for you.
[EDIT] Just noticed that you did include 'Crop' in the subject line. Do you have 'Delete cropped pixels' checked?

Hi Guys, I upgraded from FCPX 10.0.6 to 10.0.78 and discovered to my immense frustration that many of my 100+ FCPX projects would not load.
Symptom:
FCPX 10.0.7 appears to hang ("spinning beachball") with either high CPU% on a single core or with 1-2% CPU busy (activity monitor.app) when a FINAL CUT PROJECT is selected. No logs error information in /var/logs ..hmm
notices that the "status circle" spins around endlessly.
Actvity Monitor.app shows "Final Cut Pro (Not Responding)
and also I notice in some cases that an OEM filter ("NEAT VIDEO NOISE REDUCTION") is in progress to be loaded. FCPX V10.0.7 must be FORCED QUITtted to remove it from system.
History: Upgraded FCPX from V10.0.6 to V10.0.07.
"FINAL CUT EVENTS" and "FINAL CUT PROJECTS" on a single file system on SAS 16TB disk array (768MB/sec read via AJA system test) and 60% utilised capacity… FCP EVENTS has 400 events in it .. some 5.2TB of Prores essence etc .. all works fine! (i.e. the storage system is first class and is NOT the issue)
32GB of RAM on MAC PRO 2009 Nehalem 16 x Vcore with ATI 5780 card and ATTO HBA's (i.e. plenty of resources!)
As usual with any "upgrade" to FCPX 10.0.? all the EVENT objects need to be upgraded. In my case this takes an hour or two.. so I do that when asleep.
After experiencing above, I restored the FCPX EVENTS LIbrary of that file system from LTO4 tape archive (BRU-PE ) and still had the same issues as above.
WORKAROUND:
FORCEd QUIT FCPX V10.0.7
RENAMEd "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects" to "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects_original"
created (make) a new "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects" (use finder)
For each project !!! in "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects_original", (do one project at a time!!!)
MOVE "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects_original/one_fcpx_projext_nnnn_folder" to "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects"
Make sure you move ONLY one project at a time. If you have a subfolder of projects, please do each project one at a time (serially!)
Launch FCPX V10.0.7 and BE PATIENT!!! .. DONT click or fiddle with the UI.. it seems when you intervene it locks up as well…
Let FCPX V10.0.7 settle….
select the project you just added above and RELINK any objects it needs. Thumbnails and proxies will be rendered again.. just be patient
wait until ALL the rendering as stopped.
QUIT FCPX V10.0.7
(now if FCPX locks up, just force it out and start again as above).
repeat for all projects in "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects_original" (go to step 4 ad do until all projects moved)
When all is COMPLETED MAKE SURE YOU ARCHIVE an instance (or make a backup ) of "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects"
If this procedure has worked the folder "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects_original" will have zero (nill, none) projects in it.
I have managed to restore ALL my "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects" this xmas between drinking etc. I'm satisfied that its all ok.
Other issues:
use DISK WARRIOR or TT PRO 6 to make sure that the file system volume where your "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects" are is physically ok. I noticed some entries in file system's volume table that represented objects in "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects" were at fault when I used these utilities… FWIW.
SUMMARY: yes this took ages to d, however luckily I had everything in at least 3 instances in an archive which has saved me many time in the old FCP& and prior days… it was just a matter of time to put it back together.
I put this outage down to may be my own impatience when I first fired up FCPX 10.0.7 after the upgrade.
I'm interested if this workaround is helpful to others and in addtiion if others have a more satisfactory remedy.

Hi Eb, yeah I could not see any "memory leak" or unusual consumption of REAL memory whose less availability would cause excessive PAGEing and SWAPping as seen in the Activty Monitor.app
I watch this carefully especially the use of REAL MEMORY by 3rd Paryy apps. BTW there are a few that cause ALLOCATED but NOT USED memory (blue in the A.M.app UI). Simply a unix PURGE command can release that memory and help clean up the PAGE and VM swap files (its alleged!).
Yes, you may be might with the element of "Luck" involved. I would add though, that having MULTIPLE project displaying in the STORYLINE window and loading always caused my FCP 10.0.7 jam up at startup with h symtoms and observations I described.
TIP: I might also add that for a super speedy launch of FCPX one may also emply setting each PROJECT's UI to show only AUDIO thus negating the need to contstruct or reneder out a PREVIEW ui in each clip in the storyline.
Your/Apples suggestion of the movememt (rename) of "Final Cut Pro Projects" to "Final Cut Pro Projects Hidden" is similar to what I proposed above to stop FCPX 10.0.7 accessing and building it up at startup. This workaround has been useful inthe past as well.
ALso one might also get the stick out and remove (delete/rm) the ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.apple.FinalCut.savedState in one's home ~/Library so that FCPX wont do such a neat job reinstating FCPX last time you crashed it... This has been helpful also in diagnosing my issues.
Lastly I have noticed that:
impatience clicking on the FCPX UI when in the unstable state causes it to lock up with NO visible CPU% busy.... as if its waiting on something which is usually me MEMTERMing it via FORCE QUIT and
the projects where I have employed the NEAT VIDEO Noise Reduction OEM filter for FCPX seem to exasserbate the PROJECT loading issues when several PROJECTS are available at FCPX startup time.
As of yesterday I have some 400+ EVENTS Final Cut Pro Events and 130+ projects of varying compexites in a single file system on Final Cut Pro Projects all working fine and as good as gold again!
Oh and one more thing, I had to RE-RENDER many projects of them again... strange as the FCP PROJECT library was renstated from a recent LTO archive as of V10.0.6 FCPX.. strange that...I would have expected if the projects and events were 10.0.6/7 compatable as proposed by Tom, that this would not be necessary... hmm straneg that

How can we add multiple editable region in template

Hi,
My issue is when I am going to create a new template I want to add multiple editable region in template and I want to use those editable region per page wise so that in page editor I will add different text for each page for those editable region.
I can use incontxt editor to change those area for different pages although is it possible to use online editor to add different text for different pages.
I also have a plan to solve the issue ... that is also not working.
Plan is .. if we can use tag (not the default one in template), want to use different tag like {tag_headding},{tag_sidebarcontent} in template so that we can use those tag in template and fill the field in the page online editor, so when differnt page we will create we will fill those field for those tag and that will show in the front view of the site.
Please help me. I am really stuck on this issue.

Yes, if you look at many of the commercial BC templates available the way they are getting around it is with Content Holders and multiple templates.
Now I know you will say that multiple templates is high maintenance ..... not if you use Content holders for both recurring content and unique content.
Think of Conent Holders as 'Includes' ... I have been doing it this way with templates that I build from scratch as well. Easier than you think.
And that way the client can change content such as footer information or whatever that appears on all pages without editing the template itself.
Only drawback is that if you are using Design View in Dreamweaver the content holders don't render. But other than that Content Holders are awesome.

Opening Jpegs for editing same as Raw

Can anyone please help me?
I use Photoshop Elements 6 and when I want to open a RAW image, I get a set of sliders on the right hand side that allows me to do basic editing there before actually opening the image. I like to use this method of editing. Is it possible to get the same screen when I open up a jpeg for editing? I have attached a screen of my preferred method.

Barbara your instruction is correct but when I do that I was ask to fill up width and height in pixel. I try to use the original file size but it says the size is larger than the original. I tried to use smaller pizel and it says it is too samall. I open it anyway and what I saw is just dot scatered all over the the photo. Will you please help me what size I have to use?

Converting a single edition into Multiple edition

I have created a single edition ipad app (Game Drive - A Safari Guide), which is selling well. But now I want to create an iphone app multiple edition app. I submitted the iphone app, but Apple rejected it as they say that it is not compatible with ipad. So to be able to have an iphone app, I have to have an ipad version of the same app. My problem is that it is the same app, i.e. if I have a multiple edition app called Game Drive, it will be the same as the single edition app that I already have on the app store.
My questions are: 1. What is the tendancy - do people buy multiple edition apps more, or single editions? i.e. will I loose out if I convert to a multiple edition app on my ipad?
2. If I keep the single edition of the app on the app store for the ipad, will people get confused because there are two apps with the same name? Has anybody done that before?
3. Is it worthwhile putting it on newsstand?
My existing app is selling quite well, and don't want to mess with something that works. But to be able to create an iphone app, I have to have a multiple ipad app of the same thing.

Can I save multiple edits of the same photo?

I'd like to take one photo and edit it several different times and save a copy of each edit. Is this possible?

Duplicate the photo first. (Photos -> Duplicate). This means that you will have multiple copies of the master as well as the edited version.
If you use versions like this often and wish to have only one master then you can do this with Aperture.

Hi! Is there a way to highlight multiple portions of a waveform within the same file to then apply an edit? For instance, if I wish to reduce the volume of breath intakes on a vocal by 10 db in six spots in the file. Can I do this all at once by highlighting all six breaths, then do the edit? Many thanks!

How to store multiple edits of the same file

When I edit photos I typically create several versions of the same photo. The first edit I will end the filename with an "x". The second edit I will end with a "y", etc. For a black and white edit the file name ends with "bw". An edited version scaled down for sharing will typically end with it's long side dim i.e. IMG_2345_960.jpg. I'm new to Lightroom and it looks like only one version is stored in the data base. Can multiple versions be saved in the catelog? How would I set my version system up in Lightroom? Thank You.

You can also use "snapshots". Snapshots are saved and when you open a RAW file just select the snapshot you want and output the image.

IPhoto cannot convert Tiff to Jpeg after editing.

I have a set of very high resolution scans made on an 11" x 17" Epson scanner that I would like to edit in iPhoto. iPhoto imports these files (which are 450 MB or so in size) (sometimes) allows me to edit them - - and sometimes it crashes when I attempt to edit these files - - but when I attempt to export them as maximum resolution jpegs it says it can't do so. Once I've quit iPhoto and then start it again the edited image disappears when I double click it. My guess is that file is simply too large for iPhoto.

I Additionally, when I convert the file using the save as command in Preview, I can convert it into a jpeg or jpeg2000 and it is much smaller (71GB for example), but the same anomalous behavior occurs when I finish editing the file and quit iPhoto- - when I double click the thumbnail, the full sized image appears briefly and then disappears. leaving in its place a completely black window. I would be most appreciative of any insights.

How to view multiple edits on a picture

Hello All,
I am using lightroom 5 and a lot of the times i will edit a raw file in various settings. here is a example;
First edit will sharpen and tone the picture
Second edit will be in black and white.
Any any time is there a way to save the two edits so i can switch back between them so i can export them as jpeg? when i view the rar picture in lightroom develop mode i see the the +- box on the picture however, i only see the last edit i did (in this example it was black and white)
i am sure there is a way to do this i just don't know how

LR doesn't auto import Jpegs after editing in PS

I have searched the internet and cannot find an answer for this. When I am in LR and right click and choose to edit in photoshop, then retouch it and then save as a jpeg, LR does not automatically import the jpeg into the catalog. So I synchronize the folder and it imports them in but then won't put by the original, even when I sort by name. I want this to be automatic. It was on my older version of LR but the new one I downloaded doesn't do it automatically and I can't figure out how to auto import the jpegs.
I am not tech saavy so go easy on me.

Ah, I think I have it figured out. My Canon software was also setup to push the image into LR as a registered application. With that disabled the auto import seems to be doing what I want. For anyone reading this later... Simply set the current image view to the preview size you want and all the imported images should open up at that preview size.

Should I use Camera Raw 5.0 for JPEG photo editing?

I have Camera Raw 5.0 through Bridge CS4 and I shoot photos on my Nikon D40X in JPEG. Should I NOT be using Camera Raw to edit my non-RAW photos? Is it degrading my images? I noticed when I did some editing and saved the photo, the new photo size was about 25% of the original JPEG size.

To tell you the truth, you might be better off just shooting RAW in the first place... but I'm surprised by your decrease in size... I can only echo the suggestion to check the JPEG quality box and the file format used. You didn't crop it to some different resolution, did you?
PS: I'm getting into photo editing pen tablets. You might try one some time for editing.

How to change RAW to JPEG without editing

Normally, when I import RAW files into iphoto, edit them, and click Done, iphoto will convert those RAW files to JPEG.
The problem is printer cannot print RAW files, but it can print files in JPEG format.
However, there are many times that I don't want to edit my RAW files, but I want them to be JPEG so that I can make a card, calendar, or album (in iphoto) and print it.
I have tried to click Done without editing images, but it failed to convert to JPEG.
Please help.

I find the same issue to be true. Any image that was rotated by iPhoto (even though the 20d settings tell it to auto-rotate), iPhoto considers this image edited, and therefore will have created a jpg copy. Now my issue is not how to retain the raw image, but I export mass amounts of photos to batch directories where I watermark and put on my website. I would like to actually just be able to drag my images to a desktop folder and deal with them as jpgs. Problem is, only the ones which were rotated are considered jpgs since they've been modified. I found if I select all the landscape images, rotate them and then rotate back, then I'm good. But I would rather not have to do that. Any ideas how I can just copy a bunch of images without having to trick iPhoto, and have them end up as jpgs???
