KDE datetime inconsistence (solved)

Hello all,
i've recently installed arch and I've a problem with date and time in KDE. Whilst the time and date are OK in the panel clock and the system ($ date ;-) on KDE apps like kontact (kmail, korganize) the time is NOT OK, it appears as -2 hours compared to the correct date (I'm on Europe/Madrid TZ, so now is UTC+2). I have the TZ var set up as 'Europe/Madrid' (it sets up every boot via /etc/profile) and KDE is also configured as being in 'Europe/Madrid' timezone.
Any suggestion?
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Arch.
I've had this problem for a while, and I solved it by changing from localtime to UTC in rc.conf (I left TIMEZONE to the correct values). Then changing the clock to UTC from the control center (not from the clock applet). And setting the clock to localtime from the clock applet.
KDE has some redundancies that like to interfere with itself. This seems to be one of them. Another good example is margins (at least in the past). There were two places that I know of that you could independently set margins, and they would add onto one another.

  • Thumbnail view is not availabe on fresh install -- kde 4.5 [SOLVED]

    Hello,
I've just reinstalled kde4.5 as minimal desktop. Everthing works great except in desktop folder the image preview mode is not working. Only icon view is available.
Could anyone help me figuring out what could be wrong? Perhaps, I forgot to install something needed for this feature. Before I deleted my full blown kde install, this feature was available.
The interesting thing is that when I open the desktop folder in dolphin the thumbnail view works fine. Only the desktop folder displayed on the desktop that doesn't show thumbnails.
I've already searched the net but found no answer to the problem.
    Thanks,
    jmak

Ok, the problem is solved. I created a second folder view in "Home mode" rather than "Destop mode" and the thumbnails showed up.

SOLVED! Update to the newest version of KDE 4.4 helped me!

  • KDE Help Needed [SOLVED]

After using arch on my laptop - I desided to use it on my desktop also..
    But now comes the problems:
my Hardware is Asus P5P800 Motherboard
    GeForce4 FX
After installing Arch Linux From New (0.7.1) and afterwards pacman -Syu
    I want to install kde.
I install the whole package - but first did a
    pacman -Sy xorg
    pacman -Sy xterms
then get the whole package from KDE - and afterwards hwd.
then I tried to start the Xserver -following is written:
    # X
    X Window System Version 7.0.0
    Release Date: 21 December 2005
    X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.0

            Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org
to make sure that you have the latest version.

After looking in /var/log/Xorg.log.0 there´s no errors.
after doing some ekstra reading about nvidia drivers and so I´ve installed those by pacman -S nvidia  and afterwars nvidia-xconfig.
My xorg.conf lies both /etc/X11/xorg.config and /root/xorg.config and looks like this:

  • Teamspeak3 in KDE - microphone problems [SOLVED]

I am in KDE4 (latest version as of now). I chose the GStreamer backend when I installed KDE.
I have a headset, plugged into the rear outlets on my pc.
    Sound output works fine.
I installed Teamspeak3 (Linux version, not Wine, but same problem in Windows/Wine version).
I can hear sounds just fine, but it does not register any sound from my microphone.
I went into alsamixer, unmuted everything, turned it up, etc., same problem. There is a 'rear mic' and 'rear mic boost' in the output section of alsamixer. when I turn that up, I can hear the microphone just fine through the headphones, so I know the microphone works and is picking up sound - Teamspeak isn't registering it, though.
The input section of Teamspeak settings shows either default or ALSA for sound system, and whichever I choose, it has two devices under microphone. I've tried all different combinations, no dice.
    Any ideas?

Apparently I didn't do my due diligence.
Teamspeak3 requires Pulseaudio. I installed it, now everything is working fine, both native and Windows/Wine versions.
Leaving this up in case anyone else runs into the same problems.

  • Fonts only rendering as squares (KDE at least) [solved]

I'm installing my second Arch box (hurray!) and I'm having a problem with fonts. When I start up KDE (including KDM), all the fonts are rendered as squares. I think I have the locale setup properly including rc.conf, and both the 75 dpi and 100 dpi xorg fonts installed. Xorg.0.log didn't seem to give any clues. Obviously I'm missing something silly. Does anyone know what it is?
Edit-->> OpenOffice works fine, so it seems to be a KDE issue.

I had to make some modifications to the script:
    Changed '/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts' to '/usr/share/fonts'
It seems to have done the trick. Thanks

  • Can't start KDE applications after update to KDE 4.9 [SOLVED]

After updating to KDE 4.9, I can not start systemsettings, kwrite, konversation, digikam or any other KDE application using krunner or from a shell. Non-kde applications starts fine. Any help deeply appreciated!

I got no messages on the terminal, and restarting KDE or even rebooting did not help. But killing some stale processes did, so now I just wonder where those came from...
    Thanks for your help anyways!

  • KDE Rectangle Selection [SOLVED]

    Hi everyone,
I finally found the time to install archlinux on my new machine, and this time decided that I was going to go with KDE. I absolutely love it so far, but there's one little feature that I miss. You see I've taken the habbit of clicking and dragging onto my background which draws rectangle that lets you select multiple desktop icons. The thing is, I don't use desktop icons at all - I just like using that feature to draw little rectangles over my background and pretending that I'm framing or hiding parts of it, like someone's face, the sun, or a small mountain. I've been doing this for years when I'm bored or when I'm thinking of something important, maybe even since the very start of my computer using years.
But sadly, that little feature seems DISABLED by default, or worse, INEXISTANT on KDE and I haven't found a way to activate or install it. Does anyone know where in the settings something like this could be activated, or if I could somehow download and install it?
I know this might not be clear; English isn't my first language and honestly I'm not too sure how to say what I'm trying to say. I'm looking to activate the rectangle selection feature that Windows and many other DE's have which consists of clicking somewhere on your background, holding and dragging over the icons you want to select, then release so that said icons are now selected. In KDE. I don't absolutely need it. I just want it because I love doing that shit. Like I'm having panic attacks without it.
    Thank you!

You can either put a FolderView plasmoid there, or set your desktop to be one big FolderView (it should be somewhere in the settings you get when you right-click on the desktop). I would presume FolderView does support selection by dragging.

I right-clicked on the background and switched from default desktop to folder view and it worked!
Thanks all of you. Feels awesome.

  • Replace blue launch icon in kde 4.1[SOLVED]

I'm not a fan of blue - does anyone know where the icon resides for the start button in kde4? I've tried under the oxygen icons to replace the kde.png, but that didn't work. It must be lurking somewhere else?

    Hi,
Running latest KDEmod using archlinux-oxygen icon theme with latest kde-Oxygen-svn icon theme, my start menu icon changed from to this image : and have no idea from where it comes from, as in /usr/share/icons/archlinux-kde and  /usr/share/icons/oxygen, the stat-here-kde.png icons are like this :
How can I make the KDE start menu use again this icon ??

  • Qt update rendered kde apps ugly [SOLVED]

I searched the forums and wiki, to no avail.

Hide wrote:It does, actually, thanks. Just tell me, how come that, regardless of what I set in qtconfig, only Clementine and SMplayer change, while k3b remains the same? K3B is a KDE app, not just a Qt app. SystemSettings > Appearance overrides Qtconfig for KDE apps, so, for them, use Systemsettings (in kdebase-workspace).

    - I can't set processor speed for powersave etc.
    Please help.

I dis the same as you some time ago, i.e. switched from kdemod to arch kde...I ran the command
    pacman -R kde-meta
to solve my problems.   When I tried to simply install kde I ran into a plethora of problems.  Also make absolutely sure that you have no kdemod packages lyinga around before you do the update, run
    pacman -Q | grep kdemod
and uninstall all packages.  Also least but not last, make sure you are not in the kde desktop enviroment when you run these commands.  Hope this helps.

  • Xfce Post-Installation problems

this is the first time i have installed xfce and so far its been great. but i could use some help with these problems.
    1) the audio comes out in jerks from the speakers but flows freely from the headphones. i had a similar problem while using kde but it solved itself after a kernel update. where should i look to solve this?
    2) the shutdown and reboot icons are grayed out. i checked the wiki and i have met all conditions for them to work.
       a) dbus is enabled in the DAEMONS array in /etc/rc.conf.
       b) i am a member of the power group for shutting down and rebooting.
       c) i am using exec ck-launch-session startxfce4 in ~/.xinitrc along with Slim.
    3) i am unable to install lib32-libsm (a dep. of google-earth-deb from AUR) because i cannot find a 32-bit version in either AUR or repositories (a x86-64 version is available in multilib). i already have a 32-bit libsm package installed previously but that isnt whats needed.
can the 64-bit package be installed in any way? or is a 32-bit package coming soon?

Hi. thanks for the info. so,would changing lib32-libsm to libsm in PKGBUILD work? do i have to do similar things for all packages starting with lib32? how would that change PKGBUILD and what should i do then?
EDIT : Thanks alphaniner. i tested it and it worked. but numlock in slim wont work. will find a workaround.
EDIT2 : i forgot to add a problem to the list. i have been getting something about "interface not defined" or another during bootup. i have commented out interface and its subordinate options in rc.conf since i dont use ethernet, but the problem remains.
    1. Have a look at "numlockx", you can then add it to xfce's startup programs.
    2. Add "dbus-launch" in .xinitrc after "ck-launch-session" to get your shutdown/reboot options.

    Hi,
Have you tried the suggestion Cyber_Defend_Team provided?
If the issue persists, start the computer in Safe mode to check the result:
If it doesn't reappear when you start in safe mode, you can eliminate the default settings and basic device drivers as possible causes. If a recently installed program, device, or driver prevents Windows from running correctly, you can start your computer
in safe mode and then remove the program that's causing the problem.
If it still in the safe mode, we may need to repair the installation with the recovery media.
In addition, please logon the problematic computer with the domain user account which works fine in other computer to test to see if it's the user account issue.
