Kernel dumping messages to console
I have some modules that have been bugging me for a year now that keep dumping info to the console instead of the klog.
Well, I was just perusing the system commands by typing names and tabulating a completion when I found this:
setterm
The manual for it says `setterm -msg off' disables kernel messages on the console. So I switched over to console 2 and tried it out on my wireless card module: brcms (one of those culprits making my system look broken... during bootup and login)
So now that I know how to disable these messages, how can I make this command run before almost any daemons startup and what not so when the boot status is scrolling I don't hear about *dev*lun* and *pci* during the system startup?
Is it safe to run terminal commands in rc.conf? Kind of a newb question but I'd like some validation/suggestion on this if possible before I reconfig.
I've decided, that the messages never show up before the "Arch Linux" logo (in /etc/rc.sysinit) at boot so what I've done is insert the command just after the logo is printed. Will reboot and see what happens.
It has certainly hidden the udev kernel messages. Some logs are still not being caught. I don't want to see these notices during boot. If it doesn't say:
message [SUCCESS|FAIL]
I.D.G.A.F. ! That's what log files and recovery environments are for!
logging in to a tty, the kmod messages are still showing up from the brcms module I would like to say I'm aggravated, but I'm beyond that; I'm gravely dissapointed at this point.

Great tips. Thanks again. But I'll have to disagree with your self contradiction: I'm not awesome this community (of which you are a member) is
I see this alot on the internet. People who like to visit the forums often, forget that others aren't so well adjusted to that environment. You should always remember this. There is nothing wrong with asking for guidance in the most trivial of situations because in the end, new documentation related to a specific issue is made available. Even if it is a redirection, it increases the number of relevent search engine hits.
I had this installed before I went messing with my libs and screwed the system up royally:
pacman -S arch-firefox-search
Indispensable Tool for an Arch Enthusiast it is. Nice hat.

Please help interpreting kernel panic message
Hello.
Could anyone please help me to interpret the kernel panic message (below) I received today. I have had several such events recently, and I have already read and implemented the suggestions regarding resolving kernel panics listed on the X-Lab's X-FAQs website. I have run all the repair and diagnostic stuff that is usually recommended to other people posting questions about resolving kernel panics. I don't have anything plugged into my Mac except the keyboard and mouse, and I know that I could take my computer to a shop and have someone look it over.
My specific question is this: Can anyone interpret the actual content of this particular kernel panic message and give me any clue as to the likely source or cause of the problem, or what is happening?
I hope that no one is offended by my posting since I am not an expert who regularly uses this forum.
Thank you very much!

Was this a one-time problem?
I claim no particular expertise, but I don't see much in the panic.log that helps to isolate a specific underlying cause.
That is, except for Maxit's rationale. Because the backtrace indicates that the exception occurred upon loading the IOAudioFamily .kext (driver, or extension "family"), related hardware &/or driver compatibility would typically be worth exploring. Please check to be sure that you've disconnected all non-critical peripherals & disabled login items and any "system enhancers" while you're troubleshooting this problem.
The 0x300 DAR (data access register) trap is probably the most common type of exception that causes kernel panics. It simply indicates that the processor couldn't perform a data memory access. This could be due to a programming issue or a hardware problem (e.g., "bad" RAM, HD corruption).
If the problem recurs without any more specific indication from a panic.log or, e.g., console.log entr(ies), I suggest you diligently work through the course of action presented in Resolving kernel panics.
Sorry I can't offer anything more magically insightful.
Good luck!

Strange message in console after upgrading to ML
Hi!
I recently upgraded my system to ML. The operation went fine and the only issue I had was that VMware fusion stopped working, as it was outdated. Everrithing seems to be working nicely well, indeed much faster than OS X 10.7.4. However I'm getting the following error message in console log and have no idea what the reason could be.

The console log is much larger, this messages will repeat ciclically no matter what applications I'm using, numbers between brackets will vary (I can't see them in activity monitor so I'm not sure if they're PIDs)
Things I've done until now:
- Looked for corrupted preference files
- Repaired permissions and searched for wrong preferences files.
- Cleaned the system from potentially troubling user agents and daemons
- Removing third party apps from launch at login
Any clues?
Thanks.Hello:
Your English is excellent...far better than some who claim it is their mother tongue
My answer was a bit flippant, sorry
I looked at my own logs after reading your last post. I note all sorts of incomprehensible (to me) messages - some indicating errors. I have no clue what the sandbox messages indicate.
The other problems could be caused by a number of things - including hardware problems.
You might try resetting the PRAM and SMC. Those are not cure alls, but they cannot hurt anything either.

MBP crashes Kernel dumps of doom!
I have not figured out the problem...I know when tge tinted screen comes up that asks me to restart I check to logs to send out to apple and it says its something to do with the airport? or my wireless? Is this issue common? I tohught it was time machine because I constantly hear my external drives turning on and off all the time...any clues as to why this could be happen? I know the software is buggy and all...
P.S. ive never had kernel dumps like this ever on this computer. I take care of it. Might I mention the damned disk utility to fix permissions does not work either?

Kernel Panic Message...Caused by new RAM???
Hey guys, just purchased 2x1gb ram from otherworldcomputing.com for my powerbook G4, im currently running the latest version I can possibly run which is 10.5.8 Everything seemed great when I put the RAM in, seemed like my computer was running pretty fast campared to the 512gb that came with the computer. All of a sudden, while im searching the web, it throws that kernel panic message up at me. I restarted and a few minutes later while im still on the web, bam, the same message.
I am currently in safe mode while Im writing this and nothing has happened yet(update:a few mintues after I finished typing this thread I received the same message, I have turned the computer off and jumped on my wiftes computer to type this I am thinking about putting the original 512mg ram back in to see if I get the message again)
Wierd, the first few days witht the new RAM everything seemed fine and then all of a sudden I got those messages. I have never had the problem ever before so it makes sense that its gotta be the new RAM right? Here are my specs

Crashed Thread: 0To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: Testing RAM @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc (the AHT is on the Install/Restore DVD that came with your Mac)? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
Cheers, Tom -
What is causing these Youtube-related kernel panic messages?
I receive Kernel Panic messages while I watch videos on youtube. I have seen this problem cited in other forums, but I have been unable to find the solution. I am aware that it is not the site itself that is causing the problem. I can watch other videos and use video editing software without incidence, but youtube videos always cause the kernel panic after watching about a dozen (or sometimes fewer) videos.
Below is a copy of the kernel panic report for your information. I'm looking forward to finding the solution to this.
Thanks in advance,
Requina

Dump "Message X" when converting plan.order in APO (Operation classified)
Hello,
We are using master recipes. One operation is classified with work center class type 019 assigned. Operation is classified with two values so I get two alternative modes in APO PDS.
I can drag and drop between alternative modes in the Planning Board, and then save so I can see the mode change also in the order processing view for example.
However when I am triggering the conversion of planned to process in APO then order is never converted. An error queue appears in the qRFC inbound monitor in ERP stating that a short dump has occurred
Short dump "MESSAGE TYPE X" Information on where terminated
Termination occurred in the ABAP program "SAPMSSY0" - in "%_ORDER_FORM_LEVEL". The main program was "SAPMSSY1 ".
Thanks in advance
CarlosHello Carlos,
Have you updated alternative resources with the values in the user fields of the operation. ?
Also assign the work center class for the operation (same class which you have assigned for the work centers)
Best Regards,
Roopesh

Trace a mapped_file in kernel dump back to a user/process
I am troubleshooting a paged pool consumption issue (MmSt and other tags related to ntfs.sys being top consumers) on a Windows2003 R2 SP2. I see from a kernel dump taken when server was unresponsive, using !memusage, around 80000 files listed as mapped_file
s, I presume these open files are causing this large pool allocations. In fact all those are old log files and should not be touched by any process for any purpose. Now we are not sure which user or process is opening these files, apart from some guess work
like AV, Backup, AppReports..etc but no conclusive evidence so far.
I would like to know if there is a way trace a mapped_file entry back to a user/process who opened those files from the kernel dump that I have?
Any help would be very much appreaciated, thanks in advance.Hi,
I don't think
there is a way trace a mapped_file entry back to a user/process who opened those files from the kernel dump. If you want to perform debugging using kernel dump, please contact

Artwork Not Loading - Error Message in Console
I am having trouble loading Album Artwork. I have tried fetching it via Advanced option in ITUNES both logged in and logged out of the STORE.
I noticed following error message in console:
22/10/2009 20:44:20 [0x0-0x5a05a].com.apple.iTunes[697] Thu Oct 22 20:44:20 Tommy-Gargans-Computer.local iTunes[697] <Error>: doClip: empty path.
Presume this is significant but I am afraid I don't understand it. Any help appreciated.
ThanksI think I have read somewhere this is a "non issue" but I still get the error message in my console messages. Wish they'd fix that. It's hard enough to diagnose problems using console without having messages appear that don't mean anything.

Hello All,
After upgrading a Cisco ASR 1001 using sub packages from XE 03.07.00b.S too XE 03.09.01.S (following the instructions detailed in the Cisco documentation but without redundant OS/RP) the device is continually reboots with the following error:
%IOSXEBOOT-4-ABORT: (rp/0): Command ‘cp –r /rmp/sw/rp/0/0/rp_security/mount/3pa/etc/* /etc’ failed
%IOSXEBOOT-4-ABORT: (rp/0): Command ‘cp –r /rmp/sw/rp/0/0/rp_security/mount/3pa/etc/* /etc’ failed
Starting IOS XE Kernel dump from previous failure.
Expected completion time is less than 5 minutes.
System will automatically reboot within 5 minutes.
The original sub packages are still present on this devices bootflash:
As per the documentation II basically copied over the consolidated image, unpacked then copied to the root of bootflash: then used the issu loadversion rp 0 file command to upload rpaccess, rpios and rpcontrol packages. Then used issu commitversion and reloaded.Hi ,
i have the same problem, new asr1001 router:
the router dont come up, only rebooting.

After i upgraded a new firmware v4.1.1.01-sp (Dec 6 2011 20:03:18) , i got many problems in NSD. Both of Modem always hang 5-6 times a day. I had read some solutions from this community. But it couldnt be solved.
and today, i just saw the log line :
Apr 26 03:31:16 2012 Kernel last message repeated 2 times. ( It takes around 5-6 times per hour).. Please tell me what it is and please explain me how to solve the modem hanging problem.
Best Rgds,
Kriengsak L.Kreingsak,
Is that the whole error message?
What type of Modem are they?
What is the ISP for Both?
Is it just the WAN locking up or the LAN as well?
Are you in Load balance or Smart Link Backup?
