Kernel Panic - analyse
Hello,
i got Kernel Panic from time to time on my Mac Pro.
I guess, as Mac-novice, that it is USB related.
As you can see i am running an Elgato TV-Card on native USB and an USB Hub with several USB devices (i.e. Ipod, external drives etc..)
Questions:
a)is my guess regarding USB right ?
b) what can i do to continue debugging ? i.e. which device cause the panic
c) any other suggestions ?

The KPs are more than likely linked to one of the USB devices you are using. If you have daisy-chained any devices together, undo the chain. Also, look at the hub(s) you are using. Make sure they are all self-powered and can adequately handle the devices you have attached to them. Try removing the USB devices (including the hubs) and running the system for a while. If the KPs stop, begin adding devices back one at a time. When you either get to the device causing the problem, or to the point where the number of devices is causing the problem, stop and look at what is hooked up.
High draw devices should be hooked directly to your computer and not go through a hub. If you feel that you do not have enough in-system USB ports, there are some expansion cards available at good online sources that will add additional in-system ports for you.
Even if you call Apple Care support, the first thing they are going to ask you to do is disconnect the peripherals except the keyboard and mouse to see if the KPs still happen.
This should be pretty easy to troubleshoot and diagnose.

Kernel panic analysis... is there a place I can upload?
To my fellow MAC users,
I am getting some kernel panics on a MAC G5 PowerPC tower that has been checked and re-checked, OS uninstalled and re-installed, hardware diagnostics passed, permissions checked and repaired... with no luck. Is there somewhere within this community or within the Apple Support site to send your log file to to analyze what is going on?
Thanks in advance!

Kernel Panic analysis please?
I get these several times a week, and I can't figure out what's triggering it. The last time it happened, I had just fullscreened a video in quicktime 7 and it was playing for a few seconds, then panic. I have Mavericks 10.9.3, MacBookPro8,3, 16GB Patriot, Corsair P256 SSD, couple firewire drives daisy chained.

Mac OS X does not panic in this fashion. But you are no longer running Mac OS X, because you have added all these intrusive extensions to the kernel and made it unstable:
foo.tun 1.0
foo.tap 1.0
com.contourdesign.driver.shuttle 2.2
net.telestream.driver.TelestreamAudio 1.0.5
com.globaldelight.driver.BoomDevice 1.1
jp.plentycom.driver.SteerMouse 4.1.6
org.dungeon.driver.SATSMARTDriver 0.8
at.obdev.nke.LittleSnitch 4052
You can have your add-ons, or you can have a stable system. -
Kernel Panic - Hardware or Software?
Kernel Panic - Hardware or software?
Mac Pro Early 2008. 2 x 2.8 Quad Core. 16 GB RAM. OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
This morning my Mac Pro Refused to start.
It goes into an endless cycle of the grey panel message "Your computer needs to restart etc. ...... " with each restart failing.
Here is what I have done and discovered so far:
1) Disconnected all peripherals and network and secondary monitor leaving only principle Apple monitor, Apple Keyboard and Apple mouse. No help - Problem remains.
2) Done a recovery start up and repaired disks and permissions (nothing significant found there). No help - problem remains.
3) I can do a safe boot and have tried rebooting from this. No help - problem remains.
However inspecting the system from Safe Boot starts to show some interesting things.
4) If I open Acitivity Monitor and look at RAM it is completely clogged with Page Ins (Over 14 GB of them). The Pie Chart is completely red. This would look like a RAM issue. There is almost 160 GB of free space on my startup disc and 16GB of RAM Installed.
5) "About this Mac" Memory tab correctly finds and identifies all the DIMMS and shows their size and slots correctly.
No. 4 would seem to indicate a memory problem but No 5 would seem to indicate that the DIMMS are functional and the system able to address them.
I have tried removing the DIMMs and trying them pair by pair and in various different combinations. No change. The system can consistently identify them and their slots but the Only Safe Boot works and the Page In log jam is always present.
I am mystified as whether I have a hardware or software problem here. If it is software then a full clean re-install followed by a time machine restore may solve things. What worries me is that if I have a hardware problem and attempt this I may end up with no OS as well.
Any suggestions for further analysis? Any wisdoms greater than mine can explain the significance of the Page ins? Should I try re-installlng first or is it time to visit the repair shop?
Any help welcome please.
David MacSorry to be late responding. I have been unexpectedly bedridden since posting and only able to try your suggestion today.
Sadly I cannot get Apple's hardware test to run at all. Holding down the D key does nothing at all. Accessing the test by internet isn't going to work on a 2008 machine. Tried the original installation disc as suggested by apple. Doesn't work. Since Lion install I cannot start up from any disc pre Lion- it causes a black screen 'You need to restart ......".
So stymied for now.
Looks like I'll have to try ans see if a full clean re-install will work. If it doesn't then back to the shop.
I have the whole system fully backed up externally so nothing to lose in the long run. Just don't want more chaos than necessary ;o) -

Kernel Panic in Japan - Please Help!
Hi all,
I just recently moved to Japan and my wife and I just bought iPhones 2 days ago. Before the Kernel message came, I was getting messages on the computer that read that 'sync' something was having trouble and did I want to report the problem?... etc. I assumed that it had something to do with mobile me which we just started working with a few days ago. So I wondered if I needed to update the software. I started to do so and it asked me to restart. After I restart it tells me that it needs a start up disk or something like that... what I usually do at this point is restart the computer and hold down the option key, which is what I did... then something new happened. This popped up:

So here I am. 5 days old in Japan (I'll be here for 3 years). I'm hoping that I'll get some info here on how to fix it myself. Otherwise I have to take it into the Tokyo store which is very very far away.
Thanks for looking,
ChrisHI Chris,
Kernel panics are sometimes causes by hardware issues. Probably a good idea at this point to check the boot disk for errors.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Select your disk, and click First Aid.
Click Verify Disk.
If the disk needs repairs, do one of the following:
Insert your Mac OS X Install disc in your computer’s optical drive or an optical drive connected to your computer, and then restart your computer. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator, which looks like a spinning gear.
Follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click Repair Disk.
Checking a hard disk to see if it’s going to fail
You can check the health of your hard disk by checking its Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) status in Disk Utility. Most disk drives include S.M.A.R.T. hardware. Developed by IBM, S.M.A.R.T. hardware allows hard disks to test themselves for potential problems.
Starting up in “safe mode” may help you to diagnose problems you’re having with your computer.
To start up in safe mode:
Shut down your computer and wait 10 seconds.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key.
You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after your hear the startup tone, but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator (spinning gear).
To leave safe mode, restart the computer normally without holding down any keys during startup.

If the boot disk appears to be ok, you could try installing the 10.5.6 combo update available here;

Six kernel panics since installing Lion
So I've had six kernel panics since installing Lion on my sandy bridge MBP. Usually running safari, mail, and excel when they occur. Weird third-party process or something? I actually don't have many applications installed on this computer. Any thoughts?
Perhaps this has something to do with it but I don't know, when looking at my login items there's a flag next to iTunesHelper. I don't know what the flag means.
ThanksThe flag simply means hide this application after it automatically launches. It should have nothing to do with your kernal panic. You need to post the relevant log message for folks to analyse.
There are others who can help with that; I'm not really good at reading the logs.
Although it shouldn't be responsible, you might want to take gfxCardStatus out of your startup just in case. You can always put it back in if that's not the culprit. Others have used it without any kernal panics, so it's probably a bad WAG.

Thanks in advance for your help!!!Ciao, Francesco.
1. Your panic logs are flagging the M-Audio FireWire driver:
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.m-audio.driver.firewire(1.7.2)@0x9a7000
Assure that you are using the latest version of whatever M-Audio product(s) you are using: check their M-Audio Website for updates. Likewise you may wish to send the panic log to them for further analysis.
2. See also my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics. The FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work systematically through the end, i.e. the "If all else fails..." section.
Good luck!

Issue after kernel panic from update! Please help
Is anyone having issues with their computer after doing the reinstall? I too had the same problem yesterday as thousands of other people had. Took me 9 hours to reinstall lion. I was very happy when I realized I didn't lose all my data. (Guess I learned my lesson on backups) My problem is: Today after my computer is working again is is so stinking slow..... Im talking it has been 15 minutes to load the new mac commercial (30 second ad, on apple.com) In that 15 minutes it has only loaded 20 seconds of it. It is still trying to load the rest so I can stream it? I have never had an issue with speed. It is taking me nearly 4-5 minutes for every email I click just to pull up and read it. Something is wrong? I know it isn't my internet, we have 3 other computers in the house that work the way they always have. My laptop has always been the fastest of them all. I need help! Anyone have any suggestions? Is is possible if the update damaged the flash drive or something? All I know after 9 hours computer loss yesterday and my computer taking all day today to answer a few lousy emails is killing me, I need a solution. I have tried cleared the cache and reset safari with no luck.

Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator (spinning gear).
To leave safe mode, restart the computer normally without holding down any keys during startup.

Why do I a kernel panic if I connect my SCSI Iomega Zipdrive?
I have start up problems in 10.4.11 (kernel panic), if my SCSI Iomega Zipdrive
is connected to its AC power transformer and the Adaptec SCSI expansion card in
my G4 PowerPC. I can no longer start the computer even after multiple restarts,
the restarts always end in a new kernel panic.
As soon as I unplug the transformer power supply from the Zipdrive, I no longer have kernel panics.
I used the Zipdrive together with Adaptec SCSI CARD 2906 which came with its own software that after installation shows up as Adaptec290X-2930.kext driver, version 1.1.0, in System/Library/Extensions.
This setup has worked for me from OS 10.2 through all later updates up to 10.4.5, but has not worked since.
In trying to solve the kernel panics I examined the extension files in the system profiler, and noticed that there are suddenly all sorts of additional
Adaptec extensions, namely
Adaptec39160.kext
Adaptec29160x.kext
Adaptec78XXSCSI.kext
What do they do?
On the other hand I found that the original Adaptec290X-2930.kext I installed with the card no longer had any dependencies and was apparently not supported by the system.
I also tried to install, after reading some similar posts, the latest version of the card driver, namely version 1.2.0, which I had down-loaded from Adaptec's site.
I still could not start up with the Zipdrive connected as all I would get is more Kernel Panics.
If I switch the Start Up System to OS 9.2, I have no problem with start-up or kernel panics, even when the Zipdrive is connected, and it works as it should. The mystery of kernel panics when I connect my zip drive is getting more complex,so I have to add more info to my original post.
The original post had an error: I had downloaded Adaptec290X-2930.kext version 1.1.0 (not 1.2.0) from the Adaptec website, and installed it.
In the system profiler/extension I now get info that Adaptec290X-2930.kext dependencies are "satisfied", but its "integrity" is "unknown".
I also notice that the system profiler/extension (list) no longer lists any of the extensions named:
Adaptec39160.kext
Adaptec29160x.kext
Adaptec78XXSCSI.kext,
however in /system/library/extensions they are still there.
I also can now no longer see the zip drive on the desktop when I start in system 9.2.2, as a matter of fact I could do so only once.
I then went to delete OS 10.4.11 from one of the 4 drives on my computer, including its 9.2 system folder. After that I loaded system 10.2 from an old install disk I had onto that drive, together with its classic 9.2.
I then started that disk in 9.2, with the zipdrive connected - and it showed on the desktop. I was able to copy its floppy's content. I did the same with one more floppy loaded after.
OK I got it working, I thought. I now tried restarting the computer in 10.2,
the zip drive showed on the desktop, but when I tried to change the floppy the 10.2 froze with a kernel panic. I could not get it restarted, more kernel panics only, until I finally pulled the power cord from the zipdrive, then it started without problem.
I switched the start-up back to 9.2, on the same disk.
I could start the computer with the zip connected, however as soon as I tried
load a new floppy (I tried several) it would now also freeze up with kernel panics. Since I still could start it with the Zip connected, I opened the SCSI Control Panel in 9.2 and found that the Zipdrive was connected at port 7 and the SCSI properly terminated. In more detail I found that the Zipdrive cannot be loaded because of a system error "-36" which I analysed as an "I/O error - not supported".
I then examined the startup items in the system profiler and found at
/System/Library/StartupItems/Disks the following:
Provides: Disks
Requires: SecurityServer
Uses: System Tuning
I now suspect that this SecurityServer was updated recently to somehow mark all disks loaded on the external SCSI as "suspect". It seems to extent its control from my three OS 10.4.11 loaded disks on my computer to now even cause kernel panics in the one reloaded with OS 10.2.
It probably takes advantage of the "user" files which identify all disks on this computer by my name. -
I am getting these kernel panics
Out of nowhere. Just doing nothing, my MacBook now crashes and I have to hard reset it.
I enclosed the crash report, because I can't find the problem.
Also, I tried to wake the MacBook Pro the other time and it was just dead. After starting it up, the time was reset to 2001.
Here is the crash report:

Thanks, but as it said, "If you have performed all of the troubleshooting steps specified above in the Troubleshooting kernel panics section of this FAQ, and the source of the kernel panics remains unidentified, then you can post recent panic logs to the appropriate forum on the Apple® Discussions for analysis"
So here I am again. I don't know how to read the above kernel panic report to see where the problem is. -
G5 Wont Start Up - Maybe Kernel Panic Related
Last evening, my G5 went into sleep mode, but instead of properly doing so, it did the "wind tunnel" effect and wouldn't respond at all, so I had to hard shut down.
I left it overnight and just tried switching on now to try to find out what happened and how to resolve it. No go. I get a quick flash of grey screen, then blank, then back to grey screen, this time with a folder icon with a flashing finder icon in the middle alternating with a question mark.
I think the wind tunnel thing was a sign of a kernel panic, so am reluctant to try resetting PRAM and wiping out any logs. I tried Safe mode boot (hold shift down after chime, right?) and got nothing. Had to hard shut down again as the fans started getting increasingly noisy and I was worried about another kernel panic possibly happening.
I'm not overly tech- or Mac-minded, but not totally dumb, but have tried to search the site for tips on what to do and am not finding anything which is helping me go through this logically, step-by-step to figure out and (hopefully, hopefully, hopefully) resolve the problem, so I need some help on this. Will gladly search out how to perform tasks if need be, just don't know how to analyse/diagnose the problem well.
I installed new RAM (Crucial) a few months back, but I don't think that is the cause of the initial panic. I had peripherals on at the time, so unplugged all USB/other externals except screen and keyboard (both now plugged direct to G5) when trying it just now, but no go. I set up Airport recently with a Netgear router - this might be part/all of the cause? The internet connection was very slow prior to this problem, low signal despite it being about 3-4 metres from router and the only computer online at the time.
Could it be battery failure? I've had the G5 since 2003-04 and haven't changed the battery previously.
Any help on how to proceed with this would be hugely appreciated. Many thanks for rading and posting guys. Thanks, just printed out that page and will go through it.
I tried using the Tiger OS Install DVD to run Disk Utility. When I use the DVD, the Startup Disk section shows the Install DVD and "Network Startup" (I'm assuming a ref. to my HDrive) which is just an icon with a question mark on it.
Disk Utility and System Profiler (again, using the Install DVD) don't recognise my hard drive at all.
I removed the airport card, too. Experienced one kernel panic (full warning screen came up as I stated the comp, had to shut down and restart) straight after, confirming my suspicions that is the cause of the panics, but no panics thereafter. Still no recognition of HD and still getting the 'missing system folder icon' thing on startup.
Keyboard's operating/recognised, it just isn't effective, since the HD is absent.
Is it possible that the error caused by the airport card could have killed my HD? Obv, I'm really hoping not, and I'm not sure how it could, but would like to know just how screwed I am here.
I'm thinking of trying resetting the PRAM - am I right in thinking the kernel panic logs are less important to me now I'm pretty sure Airport is the culprit? And could a PRAM reset 'save' my HD (i.e. get the computer to recognise it again)? Or is that not possible?
Sorry for the mass of questions, I'll read through the link now.
Will probs order a new battery once this gets sorted anyways, as I'm sure that'll give out at some point in the next 12 months. -
Kernel panic since i bought my powerbook G4 (end 2005)
Hello,
I am desperate : i have had kernel panics since i bought my powerbook G4. I describe the kernel panic as a grey square that appears in the middle of the screen telling me to force my mac to quit in many languages. I have tried the apple care online call, then i have erased everything from my powerbook and reinstalled the system as applecare advised me to do. It continued. Then i went to ITechnique in Montreal to get some experts to analyse it, they didnt see nothing. Then i started to have these strange blackout screens, and these noises that was telling me that my mac is trying to reboot with no sucess. Everytime these black screens happens i have to force my mac to quit and it happens more and more. Then i gave it back to ITechnique, still they didnt see nothing. Then i want to Carrefour Laval, they took my powerbook for 1 week time to check it ; they didnt see nothing. So i proposed them to photograph and to film all my problems, after they had changed my macs memory. One week later i had 6 photos of kernel panics that i took in 2 weeks time + 4 to 5 black out screens filmed. I went back to Carrefour Laval to the genius bar and now they believed that there are problems on my mac and they want to replace hardware and many other things on my machine?!!!! What are the solutions? My applecare finishes july 2008, i am a graphic designer, i cant sell this useless machine like this, but i need to buy a new one. Do you think applecare could replace my machine? Are they other persons who has had the same problems with a Powerbook G4 bought in october 2005? Are they persons who has had their computer replaced by the applecare? Thank you very much!designerj:
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You should not be having the issues you are having, and, in any case, if you have Apple Care the issue should have been resolved. I believe that you have done all that you could be reasonably expected to do.
I suggest that you call Apple Customer Relations and tell them exactly what your have detailed here. Offer to send documentation of your issue. And tell them that since your issue continues and you need your computer for your work, that you would like to have them resolve the issue by their replacing the computer with a new one. Be very polite. If you run into an agent who is unresponsive or rude (and I have heard reports of such), thank them politely, hang up, and call back later and hope to get someone else. If all esle fails, send a letter to Apple detailing both your technical issues as well as the difficulties you have experienced getting help.
Good luck.

Mid 2010 Macbook Pro Keeps Restarting due to Kernel Panic. Ideas for how to fix?
So my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro keeps randomly restarting, and giving me a screen that says something like "your computer restarted due to a problem."
Looks like it as a kernel panic, but I have no idea what this is. Seems to be no pattern for when it crashes. Used to do it maybe once a month and now this is the 5th time in two days.
Any idea what might be going on? Looked at past threads but nothing seemed to apply.

Looks like it as a kernel panic, but I have no idea what this is. Seems to be no pattern for when it crashes. Used to do it maybe once a month and now this is the 5th time in two days.
Any idea what might be going on? Looked at past threads but nothing seemed to apply.

I have a 2010 macbook pro currently running 10.6.8 that has served me very well over the last 4 years, except in recent months it has been getting frequent kernel panics. Started every few weeks, now happens multiple times a day. It seems to happen more frequently when I'm doing something like playing a game which makes me think it might be related to the GPU or the computer overheating, but I can't find any specifics on how I'd go about troubleshooting from here. A typical report after a kernel panic is below:

You may be able to use gfxCardStatus 2.3 to switch to using the other GPU instead which should stop the frequent panics until you get the motherboard replaced or buy a new computer.
Of course don't dismiss the possibility that the software you have installed has installed extensions that are not compatible:
com.cisco.nke.ipsec 2.0.1
com.quark.driver.TetherBerry 1.0.0d6
com.parallels.kext.prl_vnic 7.0 14922.693916

com.parallels.kext.prl_usb_connect 7.0 14922.693916
Try running in Safe Mode to see if the panics stop. If they do, then you need to completely uninstall the software responsible for the above extensions: Cisco, Quark, and Parallels.
