Using VS2005 & CR XI R2
I have a graphic with square edges, that I want to round off, So I thought it would be easy to overlay it with a rounded box, But I can't seem to get this box on top of the graphic, I can get some text on top but I can't give that a rounded boarder. (This sort of layering is easy in MS Word, I will be surprised if I can't do it in a tool designed to produce nice reports).
Have I missed something or am I going to have to get my graphic changed?

This might be a long time since you posted, but can you past a snippet of what you did to overcome the problem? I am facing a similar problem where I have a JLayeredPane to which I want to add a JTree component.I also want to draw background rectangles behind the tree's nodes, so I over-ride the paint(Graphics) method of JLayeredPane and use g.fillRect(...) to draw them. The JLayeredPane instance is then added to a JScrollPane, which in turn is added to JSplitPane. The result is that I only see the background rectangles and not the tree. any ideas how to show both the background rectangles and the tree?

Multi-layered graphic

I'm having a problem using imported multi-layered photoshop graphics (720 x 480 72 dpi) After importing one to the browser, if I drop it into the timeline, it looks great. When I double click on it and it opens up to show the layers, it still looks great. But if I do anything to it, including rendering it untouched, stagger the layers so they dissolves in on top of each other, change the size of any layer or apply motion, the quality of the graphic is compromised. You can see the pixels of the text and the objects become blurred.
I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. Any suggestions??

There are five layers, transparent. I did bring them all in together. I'll try bringing them in separately.
The only resizing I've done is scaling them down, not up. I just changed the field dominance to none but that didn't help. (Do I need to change that back for future projects??)
I have been looking at it fully rendered.

REMOVING files / layers / graphics from Indesign

Hi, I have used 100s of photos and graphics in a book production but now I see that many of them were not used in the book. If I delete them from the Indesign file, they keep coming up as missing files and links. Is there a particular way to remove files from an Indesign work? thank you

What I mean to say is that I go into Finder where all the TIFF and PSD file used in the Indesign project are sitting and those that are doubled up or created at some point but no longer needed, I then remove them. I do not wish to delete files that are sitting on the Indesign pages since they are final. I am referring for example to file that I created with a graphic which I now no longer need, a photo that I saved as psd but created the same one as tiff etc.
I have removed some of those in past because they just take room for no reason and increase the size of the indesign file. But when I reopen the Indesign file I get a pop up message that links and files are missing, referring those I have deleted and asking to find them and reinsert them.
The project I am working on is a large coffee table book with over 1500 photos and graphics over 457 pages (13" x 13"), so in the process of producing the book, obviously many psd and tiff files are created which I dont want to use anymore. All my other final graphics and photos which will show in the book are safely stored and backed up. So how do I get rid of those that I no longer need?

IMac dual for graphic design?????

Considering getting and iMac dual intel based computer with 1gig Ram running OS10.4.
Currenly running PowerMac - System 10.3.9 - 450 MHz with 768 Ram Bus Speed 100 MHz.
Software: QE 6.5, Illustrator and Photoshop CS as well as MS Office X
Use PS moderately, mostly to adjust photos.
I understand these programs will be running using Rosetta and therefor slower. BUT, will they run at about the same speed or maybe even faster than they now run on my older PowerMac G4 PowerBook Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I'm about to seriously upgrade from a G3 imac and OS
9.2.2----(yeah, I've been slow about these things).
I'm starting to create more large and layered
graphics/illlustration files and have read that one
needs a dual core processor, extra hard drive, and
plenty of RAM to get enough power and speed, and that
means a PowerMac tower. However, I love the new Imac.
My question is, is it possible to get enough if I get
an Imac intel with it's duo core processors, put in
two GB RAM, and add a couple of external hard drives
for storage and scratch disk? Or am I putting off the
inevitable, and should just bite the bullet and go
for the bigger gun?

Go with the PowerMac G5 because it will be more upgradable in the future. If you look now, there are companies that make processors for the PowerMac G4. The last and fastest G4 was a dual 1.42 Ghz G4 and now third party companies offer up to dual 1.8 GHz G4 processors. If you plan on keeping your computer for a long time, get a tower-based computer because those are easily upgradable and judging from the age of your G3 iMac, you like to keep your stuff for a long time :-D

HT4641 Importing graphics with with transparent backgrounds such as .psd or .eps

I want to use this for an art project for my sons class. Can I import .psd files with transparent backgrounds as per Word, to retain the clear cut shape/opacity of background. Or can I import .eps illustrator files with transparent backgrounds? Thanks.

If you need transparency - as I stated - you need to convert the image to GIF. PSD is a layered graphic workspace file specifically for PhotoShop; EPS can be read by more applications, but is still basically a graphic print format. It might serve your customer needs, but wouldn't be the format I would recommend for general distribution. Typically you wouldn't embed EPS in another file, it would be the container for the print ready document (and the concern for transparency would be somewhat moot).
However, I'm not familiar with the intimate details of your project or customer needs, so take that for what its worth.

Apply Style or Favorites options in Live Type?

Hello, just trying to figure out live type, and I have a question.
I am using it to create info graphics on a dvd presentation, and I am wondering:
Do I have to manually format each different line of text, or is there a way that I can save a set of formatting parameters (font, size, drop shadow settings, color) and apply a style to given text, or do I have to format each line every time. I looked in the manual, and searched this forum and didn't find anything helpful.
I can't believe there isn't a way to do it, but I can't find it. Maybe saving it as a LiveType (even though there is no motion or effects)?

You've got a couple choices here.
You can always copy a text track...paste it on a new track and then change your text.
If you have a more involved and layered graphics you could also create a template.
To save your project as a template:
1 Place the project file (.ipr) in a folder in this location: /Library/Application Support/
LiveType/Templates.
2 Generate a short QuickTime movie of the project (with the same name but an
appropriate movie extension, such as .mov or .mp4).
Once you do this, the template will appear in the preview window of the
Template Browser.

I am having trouble previewing.

Ok to start with my problem --
I can not preview my video timeline at all when i have photoshop files on the timeline making it really hard for me create a video.
When i first purchased PS9 & PE9 about three months ago everything worked great i had no problems editing .psd files in pe9 just all of sudden it decided to quit. The very first thing i did was make sure my video card along with every other driver on my machine was updated this still did not correct the problem now 2 months later still the same problem. Can anyone help me please????

The #1 reason why love using premiere is because i can create my graphics in photoshop (at which i am very skilled) and import them straight to premeiere and use them on the video timeline with alpha channels already in place. I purchase PSE9 & PE9 as an upgrade from PSE3 & PE4 because my 64bit system was really not liking running the 2 older versions.

my projects are generally 3-5 minutes long and include edited video shot with a mini dv camcorder, a background layer under the main edited video layer and
1 -3 lines of layered graphics (usually photoshop files).

I am using Premiere Elements & Photoshop Elements 9.
I am working on a HP windows vista 64-bit system with 4GB of ram with....i believe 512mb of dedicated ram to a "ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics" video card running Catalyst software.

What do you see?
If nothing, then you need to double-check your video drivers and/or remove the BadDrivers file. If something used to work but suddenly doesn't, it usually indicates the need to update. (Or, less likely, you've installed a program that conflicts with a current program.)

Is there a red line above your clips on the timeline? If so, press Enter. When the line turns green, try to play your timeline preview and see if it makes a difference.

Tab 7.0 Update Issues / Findings

- Had two browser windows active, something already in 'Copy' memory, went to Copy again and it closed all the browser windows
- Scrolling is smoother but alittle more touchy. If a web page has an embede video in it, the video window lags way behind the scrolling until you release your finger, making it difficult to postion the page because the video window is blocking your view.
Additionally, similar delays occur on other sites that have layered graphics. You can see a good example of this problem on this site www.govoutreach.com
Another bad example I just ran into is scrolling an applications settings menu, All te characters hung & strechted when trying to scroll up or down. Took the screen about 5 seconds to clear up. App is called Marine Weather, and the problem occurs when modifying layer options of the mapping. I've notified the developer to double check w/them as well. I also checked the problem against Google's Layers, but nothing occured there.
- After update, Charging via usb, Battery indicator in upper-right showed a negitive sign. Also... Info/Status details describe current as 'Decharging' What is occuring?
- Sometimes the Task Manager lags abit when starting up
- Screen Off... When plugging in the charger, the screen would come back on, but then, go back off if you didn't enter your password (about 5 seconds or so). But after the update, the screen stays on, and now requires you to press th power button to make it sleep. On the same note, when the battery fully charges, the screen comes on (due to notification), but doesn't return to its off state.
- Typing Text... When typing/using the (period,comma,question) button, each depression leaves an odd looking character until you press the space bar, which the reveals the true character selected. Additionally, if you touch the button, say for a period, wait a few seconds, then the odd character would go away, then the peroid would appear. The odd looking character appears like a period with a small dash under it. This issue makes it difficult when tapping to select, as your not able to see the true character until you spacebar away, or wait a few seconds before continuing to type.
- I'm experiencing more browser/application aborts as days pass.
- The browser does'nt respond as smooth as before the update. Slight jerkyness, Longer pauses before another actin occurs such as opening another browser window from clicking on a link.
- The New Highlighter/Text Selector w/the pop-up options is erratic, and won't let you select text accurately. It wants to jump to the left margine of a given paragraph, and trying to drag it back won't work sometimes, it still wants to snap back to the left.
- I'm getting the feeling my battery is draining alittle sooner? Does this have anything todo with the Decharging I noticed occuring after the update?
- First wakeup in the morning (from sleep state), seems to take longer for screen to become active, and to turn landscape mode
- Unless I'm missing a setting on my side, I've also noticed I ha n't been getting notifications for applications I have installed. I have to go into the Android Market, then view 'My Apps' to see if there are any updates.
- Built-in Calendar... Making changes to the settings, Time, you cannot modify the time zone without select Locking the time zone first, backing out of settings, going back in, only then will the time zone list be available to edit. / Also, option to add/delete email accounts is missing.
- Settings > Accounts & Sync, Ability to turn individual accounts is missing
- Week-plus of use since update. Getting less battery time over 8 hour period than before.
- Using Google Mapping, taking much longer than before to map out area, espeicially with Traffic activated.

If I can add another problem to the list: after the last update, my Tab is no longer able to access WiFi via my Samsung laptop running Windows 7 (I was able to, and did daily, before the update). Nothing has been touched on the laptop. Before, I had been so relieved to be able to tether onto my WiFi at home through my laptop because without it, my Tab will not connect to my Belkin wireless router, no matter what channel, what encryption method (or no encryption) used - **bleep** ANNOYING! Now, neither will work. I thought updates were supposed to fix things (like not being able to connect to Belkin routers), not make them worse!
Please don't respond saying something is not set up right on my end. The Belkin issue is well documented on blogs throughout the internet, and it has never been resolved. The only thing that changed for me was the firmware on the Tab - no other settings were touched, although after not being able to connect, I did try numerous variations to try to get it to connect again. Has Verizon/Samsung just given up on on the 7" (Belkin issue not being resolved, no Gingerbread...)? I haven't seen any EOL notice for it, so this flakey WiFi issue needs to be resolved.

Playback and Rendering issues when GPU acceleration is enabled

I'm using the new MacPro with dual AMD FirePro D300. When I enable GPU Acceleration (Open CL) I can no longer play through an entire sequence. It specifically has issues playing through any layered graphics or titles, but seems to play with those disabled. I have tried having "Composite In Linear Color" enabled and disabled, and neither seemed to make a difference. It's the same deal when rendering. If I have titles, and use GPU Acceleration it jumbles clips, cuts to black or static, all manner of weirdness. Is there something I'm missing?
An example of what playback looks like if I have titles and GPU Acceleration enabled.

This computer thing seems complicated enough that if your system works better with GPU accel off, that's you best performance. I understand they've been trying to sort out these sorts of issues but there's so many dang variables, and trying to build software that interlinks with other complicated software is something no other NLE or Grading program does. That throws even more kinks into the list.

Pan & Zoom multilayered PSDs. Help needed

I've got an edit I need to finish pronto then another one this coming monday and need to get some questions answered before then or in serious trouble!
Additional details: Running FCP 5
We have a client that wants to do an animatic (motion graphic add)
He want's to be able to import a multilayered photoshop image WHILST keeping the original image quality, if the dimensions are above 720x576 (I edit in UK therefore PAL pixel dimensions), so you can pan and zoom across the image while simultaneous fading up and down and moving certain layers.
I was originally going to edit it on an Avid Adrenalin but found out that you can do some but not all of these things without great difficulty. SO am therefore going to edit on my FCP suite.
I tried last night to import a multilayered photoshop image and made it double the normal 16x9 PAL pixel dimentions (which are 1204x576) making it 2048x1152.
Doing this I hoped it would let me try and achieve a pan & zoom effect, but I found that it distorted the aspect ratio of the clip.
Making it squashed, even though my new project that I had set up was Pal DV Anamorphic (16x9). It dispalayed the newly created large psd as eveen more anamorphic - more like cinema scope!!
I looked it the motion tap and the distort aspect ratio in the motion tab was zero.
I then did a test:
flattened the psd, changed the image size to 1024x576.
I then imported that and all was fine, it imported it at the correct ratio.
Also major question.
Is FCP able to handle these graphics easily.
When I import them and insert them into the new seq I can set that seq to Unlimited RT low playback to see the move easily.
But when I open the nest that has all the layers it wont let me set RT settings, it only displays a few options, none that allow me to view in low res.
The client wants to edit in DV not lower so cant do motion jpg offline res.
He also needs the large images, eg we pan across a models hair only to fade up a layer of a product appearing in her hand.
I don't know After Effects well enough to attempt the edit on that, and I don't know motion at all.
The photographer/ client says he's done all his previous edits in FCP.
Is there an article I could read or is there any advise anyone can give me about approaching this project?
Minimizing render time, work flow etc
Has anyone used Lyric Media's Pan Zoom Pro?? (Or was that used by people with FCP 4 and now FCHD can acheive Pan & Zooms really well???)

very nearly sorted after breakthrough last night.
Just need to clear up one more thing:
An FCP editor mate says he keeps the graphics he's given high res i.e. 300dpi, he says you can zoom in and keep the quality.
Can fcp handle bigger image resolutions? I know it can only go up to 4000 pixels squared but what dpi can it go up to. I always thought it would only work in 72 dpi.
Before finding about about fcp being able to handle higher than 72dpi, after numerous tests and conversations with you, I'd come to the conclusion that:
If designing in Photoshop for Final Cut Pro
If you don't use photoshop's PAL DV presets take this into consideration:
In graphics for 4:3 FCP projects:
768x576 convert to 720x576
1536x1152 convert to 1440x1152
always divide graphics width in photoshop by:
1.06666666667
In graphics for 16:9 FCP projects:
1024x576 convert to 720x576
2048x1152 convert to 1440x1152
always divide graphics width in photoshop by:
1.42222222222
I'm not sure of the actual size of the images the client is going to give me & I desperately don't want to get into the problem I had yesterday of distorted aspect ratios when importing to FCP.
The only question is
If he gives me a photo that's 300dpi I'm going to have a problem with knowing exactly what size the image will be in photoshop regarding rescaling etc.
When he gives me the graphics, I'll check the dimetions in photoshop.
I should check if it's a rectangular or suare pixel doc first correct?
My thinking is that it'll be square pixel coming from a digital camera, and we'll prob work in 4:3 (i've just been given video rushes to combine with the edit at 4:3 res)
Regarding the graphics,
Should I work in a high res and keep the pixel dimentions as high as I need up to 4000pix squared or should I keep it at 720x576 and keep the res high?
FCP works better with images at 720x576 they don't need rendering regardless of the dpi?? ANd also when you step into the PSD nest it gives you an option of Unlimited RT, it even has a dark green line in Safe RT.
Whereas when I work in images over 720x576, (say double that at 1440x1152) the PSD seq FCP creates when importing the multi-layered graphic has a red render line and won't let me work in Unlimited RT or Safe RT, it just gives the option of: 'use playback settings' or 'full quality'.
would it be good to create a photoshop template, so that I can drop the graphics I'm given into that, then manipulate it accordingly??

I do not think that I am completely focused into this completely, so let us see if the following is going to help.
You are going to need a base for your button. When you mention "image" button, I am assuming that you are using that term to differentiate between a text button and a thumbnail type button.
The menus (main and scene) take their origin in .psd files on the hard drive and strict nomenclature and structure for Layers Palatte. And, the buttons on the menus trace back to the menu markers on the Timeline, main menu marker and order of placement of scene markers. The scene thumbnail will only appear when there is a scene marker on the Timeline to which it.
In view of all that
Where have you already inserted this "image (button)"...into the Layers Palette of a Photoshop document or other? Is this "image (button)" in a structured Layer Group in the Layers Palette with sublayer groups, text layers, graphic/background layer"?
Let me give you an example
If you have a button (with thumbnail) on the main menu and you want that to open to a specific scene in your movie, then you use a main menu marker on the Timeline at the spot that you want that button to target.
If I am getting closer to what you seek, then please further clarify the DVD navigational envisioned scheme.

Resolution problems exporting to DVD

I am brand new to FCP 5 and everything I have learned has been within the past two weeks. I have read MANY posts on resolution settings, square pixels vs. retangular pixels, iDVD problems, exporting problems, etc. However I have not found an answer to my problem, but many helped.
I am currently trying to project video from a DVD. The projection needs to be an EXACT size. After exporting and viewing with projection in QT Fullscreen, the video is exactly what I want.
However, when I burn a DVD using iDVD and project it from a DVD player, the projection is slightly stretched horizontally. Why is that?
The sequence is originally from HD and the export settings are -
-Frame Size: 640x480 (4:3)
-Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1440x1080
-Exported using QT Conversion NO COMPRESSION
(There are many other combinations of frame size and pixel aspect ratio's that also work initially, but they project with the same problem.)
I had to have missed something.
ANY suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The footage did come from an HDV from Sony.
I use QT Conversion because if I export it as an QT Movie, the video is distorted. However, when exported through Quicktime conversion/quicktime movie/no compression, the movie is exported in the correct dimensions, though the DVD play back issue still persists.
I am running off of iDVD v 5.0.1 and could not find a place where I could choose a 16:9 option, if that is what you meant.
The sequence does include a PSD mask which was imported as a Layered Graphic Sequence. That shouldn't have any impact on the burning issue though.

Difficulty exporting InDesign file to PDF

I am an InDesign newbie, using CS4 on a Mac. I have inherited a 16-pg InDesign document that was created by a graphic designer from his home (also using a Mac); he is no longer with our company and is not available for advice. We are trying to replace fonts he used in the document, plus some links are missing. The designer turned over most of his files before leaving but did not package the documents.
The problem: There are several instances in the document where a layered graphic element (with text on top) overprints when the file is exported to PDF, covering the copy. (I've tried all variants of PDF - from high quality to small - and it does it every time). When I check the file in InDesign, it looks OK, until I click the Overprint Preview command; then I see the way the image bleeds over onto the text, but I don't know how to tell it not to do this! I'm new to InDesign and am not sure how to change settings for elements. I have tried to click on this layered element to select it & find out its attributes and properties, but nothing happens when I click. I have been able to change the font for the top text layer, but that doesn't make any difference in the PDF export problem.
The designer created another 16-pg document similar to the one with the problem in it, using a very similar graphic element. (These docs are two versions of a sales kit -- one with prices, one without.) For some reason, this document does NOT overprint when exported to PDF. So far, I haven't been able to figure out what settings are different in this document.
I don't know if the layered image was created in Illustrator, which the designer used to create some of his graphics. I do have access to Illustrator and also am attempting to learn this program so possibly could make some fixes if need be. I have Photoshop but not Acrobat.

I don't fully understand your problem but I'd like to help.
By Shift-Command-Click, I think you are referring to selecting underlying objects. I'm on a mac, for me it's command control click. At any rate it's not related to locked objects, it's a method of selecting an object when other objects are stacked on top.
Possibly your text is on a locked layer. Window: Layers - check to see if any of your layers have a padlock icon.
Also it could be on a master page. View: Show Frame Edges. Master page elements will have dotted outlines, they can be edited on the master page.
Regarding images - there are two possible selections to make. One is the container, the other is the content. To select one or the other, Object: Select: Container or Content. There are also little icons in the control bar that allow you to do this.
With containers, you can select the bounding box, or you can manipulate the anchors. If you select the object with the Selection Tool (dark arrow) you get the bounding box. If you then switch to the Direct Selection tool (hollow point) you can change the anchor points. To be clear - if you select the box with the direct selection tool to start with, you will select the contents (if there are any), not the container.
With InDesign, a container object is one of 4 things - a text box, a graphic box, an unassigned box, or a mask for other containers. Sometimes it is hard to tell what you have. Learn to distinguish text boxes from other types by looking for the small white boxes in upper left and lower right when you select them.

Can USB act as a video output??

*As far as I am aware:*
you are able to utilize USB ports as video outputs.
With a basic graphics card you can only output either:
2 separate signals for split screen from the 2 standard dvi provided outputs.
OR
2 separate signals for split screen from the 2 USB ports.
NOT BOTH providing 4 outputs.
QUESTION
Does the USB port output video via the 2 graphics cards...thus providing only 2 outputs?
What are the ins and outs of dual layering graphics cards to provide further video output options?
is this expensive? does it require a new graphics cards? can i just add a further graphics card to provide 3 output for an extended screen display??
I hope I have provided enough food for thought.....Im very confused with how this all works

Im looking to extend my split screen arrangement to a further screen. making a 3 screen set-up.
