LCD Panel not supported (acpi brightness)

Hi all,
This is my first post, Hello!  I have used several distros but this is my first time using Arch.
I have a dell d420 (dual core / intel graphics).  I have installed Arch with lxde / compiz.
Things have been going pretty well so far, I really like the distro.  However, I am having problems with laptop-tools and adjusting the brightness of my lcd on AC acpi events.
Basically, I have /etc/laptop-mode/conf.d/lcd-brightness.conf configured as follows:
# Should laptop mode tools control LCD brightness?
CONTROL_BRIGHTNESS=1
# Commands to execute to set the brightness on your LCD
BATT_BRIGHTNESS_COMMAND="echo 20"
LM_AC_BRIGHTNESS_COMMAND="echo 70"
NOLM_AC_BRIGHTNESS_COMMAND="echo 100"
BRIGHTNESS_OUTPUT="/proc/acpi/video/VID/LCD/brightness"
Further, laptop-mode is running and set up as a daemon.
The problem is when I plug/unplug the power cable the brightness of the panel does not change in the way I would expect it to.  Sometimes it does not change at all, sometimes it gets brighter on battery than it does on AC!!!  The brightness keys on my laptop work fine (however, they are I believe prgrammed into the bios and rely on no software to adjust the panel.)
Things I have installed / setup:
acpid
acpi
laptop-tools
I have noticed that there seems to be a problem recognising my panel, when I do a
cat /proc/acpi/video/VID/LCD/brightness
I get the response:
<not supported>
Also:
cat /proc/acpi/video/VID/LCD/info
device_id: 0x0400
type: UNKNOWN
known by bios: no
I think this is the problem, as laptop-tools and acpi seem to be configured correclty apart from this issue.  Any thoughts?
Many, thanks.

OK, it looks like others have had a similar issue with the NVS 3100M adapter. I found this prior post:
I followed the advice there and installed the 32 bit A08 driver that I found here:
Now the backlight works fine on startup. Unfortunately my system has lost some other small functions and seems a bit slower, however, at least I can now work while I travel.
It's a bit disappointing that newer drivers seem to break my computer. I'd very much like for that not to happen.
Some steps of this, like updating the BIOS and installing the driver were a bit complicated, so I'm happy to give advice on how to do that if anyone needs. In the meantime if anyone has a better way to fix this, I'm keen to find out.

  • MacBook Mini-DVI to VGA - Samsung 32" LCD - Mode Not Supported

    I followed the instructions on Apple's site to use the MacBook with the lid closed and an external LCD. It worked perfectly the first time I tried it. (I believe in 1920 x 1024). It seemed a little hard to read so I changed the Display resolution, then encountered the "Mode Not Supported" on my LCD. I unhooked and used my MacBook to change the settings back, but the MacBook seems to revert to the "Mode Not Supported" resolution when I close the lid. Any suggestions? Can I reset the Display Preferences on my MacBook?

    I think this procedure should work, but it requires an external USB keyboard.
    - Shut down the Mac.
    - Have all the following connected:
    - MacBook power supply
    - External display
    - USB keyboard and mouse
    - Open the lid on the MacBook and hit the power button.
    - Immediately close the lid on the MacBook and start holding down the Shift key on the USB keyboard.
    - Release the Shift key once you see the spinning gear on the gray screen on the external display.
    The above procedure should cause the Mac to start in Safe mode and hopefully will finish booting into a useable screen. If that is the case, go into Displays preferences and select a known working resolution different from the one the Mac started up in under Safe mode. Now restart normally. Hopefully the newly selected resolution will persist through the normal restart and you will have a working external screen again.

  • K8 T Neo Does Not Support Acpi 2 With Current Bios.. No Chance Of Cool N Quiet

    Hi guyz
    If you read the Readme that comes with the Athlon64 driver from AMD, let me quote: "This driver supports processor performance control via the processor objects defined in the ACPI 2.0 specification."
    Well check ACPI verstion in Sandra, the current BIOS and board only support verstion 1.. no wonder the CPU is not speed stepping as it should with CoolNQuiet.
    Any one here ever see there CPU speed step? If so give us all the specs and details.
    Hope MSI will fix this, I don't get it.. they have a page http://www.msi.com.tw/html/e_service/techexpress/tech_column/6702/page11.htm where they show how to enable it.
    BTW don't try to tell me I have a CPU that doesn't support it cause I do.. checked today, gt an AO ending on the model string and that one supports CoolNQUiet.

  • Window 7 is not supported (screen brightness issue)?

    I called Lenovo tech support to find out if they had a solution for the inability to dim the screen in Windows 7.  The suport person told me to load the latest drivers.  I did, then called back with my case number.  I told them that the suggestion didn't work (I knew it wouldn't).
    The guy then asked me if I had received the Win 7 update from Lenovo, and I told him "No, I bought Windows 7 and installed that version".
    Eventually, when he realized he couldn't help me, he told me that they couldn't give me any more help because I had loaded "unsupported software".  Apparently, they consider Windows 7 (if not received from Lenovo) "Unsupported Software"!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Thank you!  That worked.  Someone please tell Lenovo tech support about this.

  • Cleaning An LCD Panel

    While installing an SSD in my iMac, I accidentally got a couple of finger prints on the LCD panel (not the glass covering it). I've read about using a vinegar/distilled water solution to clean it but would like to hear from someone that has done it. I'm scared to death about damaging the panel.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3226#portables
    To clean the screen on your MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air, first shut down the computer and unplug the power adapter. Dampen the included cleaning cloth with just water and wipe the screen. Do not spray liquid directly onto the screen.

  • "Mode not supported" Mac mini connected to LCD TV via HDMI

    Hello, new mac min owner here (2.5) (September 2011).  I followed the instructions in the "hello" booklet, including attaching peripherals, such as mouse and keyboard. I also connected a Samsung LCD TV via HMDI cable - as I propose to use this as my monitor. I then switchedn on the macmini, as directed in pages 11-16 of the macmini 'hello' handbook. Unfortunately I cannot even progress to the setup assistant as my TV just tells me that the "mode is not supported" through the HDMI cable. I assume that some output settings need to be changed in the macmini to accommodate the LCD TV output range.
    My question is, how do I change these settings if the only screen I have is the screen that the macmini will not output to? Isn't this a massive oversight by Apple, given that a major selling point is the macmini's versatility?

    What you are seeing, where you can't see the edges of the image, is known as "overscan".
    This is something TVs have done forever to avoid seeing weird stuff at the edges of the transmitted frames.
    The display control in System Preferences lets you turn overscan on or off (it is a checkable item in the "Options" panel). You might need to have this checked to display video, but you sure don't want it checked to use the TV as a computer display.
    Although I have overscan OFF on my older Mac Mini, I've had the problem where sometimes after a restart the display is in overscan mode. To fix this, I can "guess" where the apple menu is off the top left of the screen, get to system preferences, check overscan to be on and then uncheck it to turn it back off. If you can't guess where the apple menu is successfully, you might try accessing the Mini from another Mac by using screen sharing. The shared screen looks correct even if overscan is on.

  • Mac mini on a LCD TV which does not support interlace mode

    Dear all,
    I am going to buy a new Mac mini and I wish to connect it to a Samsung LCD TV 37A656A1F (serie 6.
    The TV manual says that it does not support the interlace mode. I then deduce that it supports progressive mode only.
    My question: Does it mean that this LCD TV model cannot be used as a monitor for a Mac mini?
    Please give a help to me

    All computer monitors are progressive mode displays. Therefore all computers, including the mini, are very comfortable running progressive mode. It is their natural state. It is more a problem when a computer has to run interlace mode in order to support a display. That is when there is trouble. So I think you have nothing to worry about if your Samsung runs in progressive mode.

    In case you did not find it, the following is a copy/paste of the Announcement on Premiere Elements 19/NVIDIA GeForce
    that appears at the top of this forum.
    Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA Video Card Driver Roll Back
    If you are a Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer uses a NVIDIA GeForce video card and you are experiencing
    Premiere Elements 10 display and/or unexplained program behavior, then your first line of troubleshooting needs to be rolling
    back the video card driver version instead of assuring that it is up to date.
    Since October 2013 to the present, there have been a growing number of reports about display and unexplained workflow
    glitches specific to the Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer has a NVIDIA GeForce video card. If this applies
    to you, then the “user to user” remedy is to roll back the NVIDIA GeForce video card driver as far as is necessary to get rid of
    the problems. The typical driver roll back has gone back as far as March – July 2013 in order to get a working Premiere
    Elements 10. Neither NVIDIA nor Adobe has taken any corrective action in this regard to date, and none is expected moving forward.
    Since October 2013, the following thread has tried to keep up with the Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA reports

  • Samsung LCD TV  "Format not supported" error message?

    I have been using my Samsung LCD TV Model number LC320SS9-A for years via a HMDI cable.   As of a couple of weeks ago I now get the follow error message,  "Format not supported" on the TV.  Running 10.8.2   2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 with 4GB DDR3 memory.  I know this is really a Samsung issue but I am wondering if anyone else is getting this new message.

    Could be related to the reducing of supported types that I just noticed the following today posted on their blog:

  • Server does not support remote panels, server overwhelmed

    After an unknown amount of connections to remote panels, I recieve the "server does not support remote panels" error.  Often times it will further say server is overwhelmed.  It seems like sometimes we can have almost 100 succesful connections without the error and sometimes just only 10.
    Ive combed over all other similar posts regarding this error and most others seem to have an issue with the initial connection, not after numerous succesful connections.
    This error can be resolved by restarting labview; however, restarting means interupting some physical processes that are running in our warehouse.  Is there a way to locate and empty this log that appears to be overwhelming the server?

    Thanks for the reply.
    Using Labview 2013 Full Development on windows server 2008.  IO communication done through compact field point modules.  All remote computers used to access remote VIs have been loaded with the correct runtime engine.  The issue seems to happen on the server end because once it happens, all remote computers get the same message, instead of one isolated computer having an issue.
    There doesn't really seem to be a pattern to this error occuring(to my knowledge).  Sometimes we can go a week or two without seeing it, other times, a few days.  We upgraded to labview 2013 and the new server almost a year ago.  This error didn't start happening until after about 4 or so months of use.
    I came across this knowledgebase earlier this week and have verified that all of our settings are correct.
    Thanks again for the reply!

  • Not supported: Air + Ajax + (flex-ajax-bridge) + LCDS

    I'm building an application Air (Flex + extjs) and offline synchronization with LCDS. For sure I need the flex-ajax-bridge.
    But the experiments failed on Air runtime container, when ajax tried to communicate with server end data services.
    And I checked the source code of flex bridge file (FDMSBridge.as):
    import bridge.FABridge;
    import flash.display.DisplayObject;
    import flash.display.MovieClip;
    import flash.events.Event;
    import flash.external.ExternalInterface;
    import mx.core.mx_internal;
    use namespace object_proxy;
    [Frame(extraClass="FakeFlexInit")]
    public class FDMSBridge extends FDMSBase
    private var gateway:FABridge;
    public function FDMSBridge()
    super();
    if (ExternalInterface.available == false)
    return;
    ExternalInterface.addCallback("createObject", createObject);
    private function createObject(className:String, cArgs:Array):Object
    From the source code, we can tell the bridge rely heavily on the flash.external interface; AND look at this link -
    http://livedocs.adobe.com/labs/air/1/aslr/flash/external/ExternalInterface.html
    where it says -
    Note: Adobe AIR currently does not support the ExternalInterface class.
    which leads to the conclusion that:
    Air + Ajax(HTML) + LCDS solution is not supported by AIR currently.
    The ExternalInterface class environment:
    Browser Operating System Operating System
    Internet Explorer 5.0 and later Windows
    Netscape 8.0 and later Windows MacOS
    Mozilla 1.7.5 and later Windows MacOS
    Firefox 1.0 and later Windows MacOS
    Safari 1.3 and later MacOS
    Can anyone tell me what's the version of AIR built-in browser (squirralfish)? or, will AIR support FDMSBridge soon?
    Thanks!

    I agree, it would be nice to have gzip encoding support in
    AIR's browser component. But, I looked at what my AIR app sends
    when it requests a web page, and it's not claiming to the remote
    server that it can support gzip. If the server is sending the
    content gzipped anyway, it's almost certainly broken. Web servers
    aren't supposed to dictate encodings. Clients say what they're
    capable of receiving, and servers send the data in that format if
    they're capable of sending any of the requested formats.
    I see only one exception in the spec.
    Section
    14.3 says the server is allowed to send what it likes if the
    client doesn't say what it wants (true for AIR) and it cannot
    support the default, which is to say, sending the raw data as it is
    on disk. So, is that the case? Can this server really not send raw
    data, to anyone, ever? If so, it's violating the spirit of the web,
    to the point that I'd say it's broken, even if the spec does allow
    it. And if the server really is capable of sending the raw data,
    it's
    really broken for insisting on sending it compressed when
    the client hasn't told it that it can handle it; this would
    actually be against the spec, not just against the spirit of the
    spec.
    It would seem a more sensible use of your time to fix the
    server than to go and learn another technology just to work around
    its brokenness.
