Leaving PC/Cubase to Logic/Mac

Has anyone been able to send midi from the OS X side to the windows side through Parallels (or other way) to use standalone PC only Virtual instruments.
i understand i can send Audio from PC to Mac through Parallels using Soundflower but i'm not sure how to trigger those machines in the first place.
Basically i don't want to leave behind a large collection of windows only vsti's when i switch to Mac. But i'm very eager to get Logic Pro on the Mac.
any insight would be appreciated.
thank you.

If you're switching from a PC, I'd keep the old machine and use it as a secondary box, either by sending your midi and audio over ethernet using various apps, or just using interfaces and cables. In addition to being able to use the old instruments, it will ease the load on your mac.

  • Recording songs on my PC laptop and importing to Logic/Mac?

I have a Mac desktop and have started using Logic for my recordings. I have a very fast laptop that is unfortunately a PC.
I was looking at this software called Mixcraft which looks like a pretty nice GarageBand clone for doing some recordings when on the road. The only problem is that there is no easy way of importing the project to GarageBand (or Logic), the solution being exporting every song file as AAC/MP3/etc and loading them back up in Logic/GB. This is, obviously, very annoying.
    So my question is twofold:
    1. Is there any PC software out there that will allow me to transfer its projects over to Logic and GarageBand?
    2. and if not, is there a good recording software that works on both PC and Mac? I've heard good things about Ableton Live.. would purchasing a license for that allow me to install it on both PC and Mac and have the opportunity to transfer my projects back and forth?
I realize this is the Logic discussion thread but I couldn't think of a better place to ask this in the Apple discussions and you guys are without a doubt the most knowledgeable bunch I know when it comes to this stuff!
Any help would be greatly appreciated

You can buy an old Logic version for example 5.5.1 which was the last one for PC ( hope you can find someone on Ebay ). This will do the job I guess...

There are many DAWs on the today market which are based for MAC & PC, so it is your opinion what to get...

  • LogicPro synchronization with Cubase on one Mac?

Anyone did it? With IAC driver?
I would like to use CubaseSX only as MIDI sequencer - I do dnot need any sound to come out of Cubase...
My goal is to import a MIDI drum track to Cubase and edit it here within Cubase Drum editor, while audition the sound from Logic.
I had a success with sending MIDI to Logic through one of IAC BUS. In Logic enviroment I routed the cable from the IAC BUS on the Physical input to Audio Instrument object where some Drum sampler plugin like DFHS or BFD is inserted. Easy and fast, MIDI data from MIDI track in Cubase are "travelling" to AU Instrument in Logic fine.
Ofcourse there has to be another IAC BUS MIDI port used for synchronizing the playback of the two DAWs. And this is where I was not that succesfull. I tried MTC, also Midi Clock but I never get smooth playback in sync. The tempo started to drift always after playing back song a while and it sounded like a broken Tape deck :))
I choosed Built in audio as a CubaseSX audio driver while Logic was using my mLan network. Maybe I should try to share my mLan audio/midi network between Logic and Cubase?
Anybody tried to do something like that?

I'm using Logic regularly as slave synchronized with MIDI clock via IAC to other applications as master (also Cubase SX). But in my experience it works perfectly only if both sequencers are set to the same tempo beforehand. So I'm using MIDI clock just for start/stop synchronization.
Btw, you don't need a separate IAC bus for transmitting MIDI clock.

  • Sostituzione gratuita scheda logica Mac Boook Pro 15" metà 2010

    Buonasera,
    Cordiali saluti
    Giovanni

I think you have to make your case in person at your nearest Apple store and find a kind manager - otherwise, as you note yourself, it is now too late.
    Via Google Translate
    Good Evening,
in July 2010, I bought a Mac Book Pro 15 ". All was fine until two months ago (October 2014) when the Mac has started to reboot itself.
Nonostate I have initialized the disk and installed all the programs and updates manually (ie not using the back-up copy of Time Machine) after two days the problem is repeated. I then decided to take it to an Apple Premium Service Providers to understand that the problem had.
They told me that it is to replace the logic board for an amount equal to 508 €. Browsing the Internet and talking on the phone with an operator Apple I learn that I would have been entitled to the free replacement of the piece as Apple itself has acknowledged the problem in the Mac Book Pro mid 2010.
Now I wonder why I have to pay that amount to a manufacturing defect, after making a big expense for the purchase of computers actually defective maleauguratamente that has manifested his problem too late to be replaced free of charge.
What solution do you propose to fix all'inconvegnente arrecatomi?
    Waiting for your feedback
    Kind regards

  • From Cubase to LOGIC PRO.

I use Cubase to record music. I want to switch and become a LOGIC PRO user. Can I open a Cubase song in LOGIC PRO?

    Not directly no...
However, you could save out your Cubase material as Stems (Audio Bounce Down Tracks) and then add them to Logic...
    And/Or... (For Midi/Software Instruments...)
You could export any Midi tracks from Cubase and import Midi to Logic so long as you have AU versions of the same VST's you used in Cubase..

  • Suggestions for leaving a rarely used Power Mac on?

I have a ~6-year-old Power Mac G5 (running OS X Server 10.5.8 with two 1.5 TB drives) that is used only as a back-up for a RAID5 NAS once per week. The total amount of data on the Power Mac is under 2 TB. (And, if it may be important, the machine has its original 500MB RAM plus an added 2 GB for a total of 2.5GB RAM.)
Because I do incremental back-ups across my wired network from the NAS, this back-up is usually quite fast, perhaps 10-20 minutes.
Other than this back-up, the machine is not used.
My question is about leaving the machine on. I see the options as:
    1. Should the machine be left on 24/7?
    2. Should it be left on 24/7, but let its disks sleep?
    3. Should it be allowed to sleep all week and just awakened once per week for the back-up?
    4. Should it be left off all week and just powered on once per week for the back-up?
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi-
I, personally, would allow the machine to sleep.
The savings in electricity and wear and tear would be tremendous, I would think.
Of course, sleep forgoes the startup process.
The Wake from sleep can be automated for convenience.
In System Preferences/Energy Saver, you can schedule wake in Options/Schedule.
Selecting "Wake fore ethernet network administrator access" may be all that is necessary to automate the process.

  • Leaving project comments in logic

I have always put a .rtf file or used comments under 'get info' of my logic file to type comments, is there somewhere inside of logic now where I leave comments about a project?

Yes, each marker is a text note, containing a complete text editor.

  • Importing cubase into logic

I have just been given a rough mix of a few tracks by a friend to have a look at. They are all Cubase SX 4 files. I have heard there is a easier way to convert the session into an alternative DAW, in this example Logic. I was asking if anyone knew much about this.

Yes.Your friends should export the file to .OMF,then you can import into any DAW.

  • Where dose Logic/Mac Pro store its audio units?

    Hello,
dose anyone know wich folder AU (audio units) are stored on a Mac Pro? they are usually in Library>Audio>Plug-ins>Components. but there is nothing in that folder and i am trying to get one of my plugins (Atmosphere Intel Mac Wrapper) to find its AU, its in that folder but the program is not finding it. so i thought if there was a diferent folder that AUs are stored it might find it there.
    thanks!

  • 3 Logic / Mac BookPro / HD Questions

Folks, a few questions for you.... Thanks in advance.
I currently run the latest version of Logic Pro on a Dual 1.8 G5 and am about to purchase a Macbook Pro 2.16GHz, 2 Gig Ram in order to run Logic 'on the move'
Firstly, are there any compatability issues between running Logic on my current machine and then on a Macbook Pro? I've heard that there's an upgrade needed to run the software on a Macbook Pro?
Secondly, am I able to run my Logic Pro software on a second machine - are there any issues re. this? Never attempted to run any software on more than one machine before. What are the logistics involved?
Thirdly, I want to buy a fast, external HD to help with running Logic (A seperate Audio Disk if you like) on the laptop and have been looking at the Lacie 80gig, triple input one (orange / silver / rubber clad thing!) It's a 5400 rpm one that can operate as a USB 2.0 OR Firewire 800 HD. Is this sufficient speed in your experiences for Logic / Audio, or would a higher rpm HD be preferable?
Any info on the above points would be gratefully received. Apologies for the length of this request and thanks again.
    Cheers.

oh boy, don't trust those reviews of 'rugged' triple interface lacie d2 drives.. I've opened them up before (with a technician friend authorised to do repairs) and I can tell you, it's all cheap componentry crammed into a 'designer' looking case. noeq is right though.. they perform well enough, and as long as you always maintain a good, consistent backup routine you will be safe. but really, those drives are marketed as something more than what they really are. I've had 6 lacie d2s over the years and all but one of them has had a serious, fatal problem after a period of time. the 2nd last one I got no longer works on FW400, the port has become sort of loose and you can tell the shoddy connector inside it has broken or is no longer stable enough for it to work. and more recently it has started making that 'tick of death' sound, so I've migrated all of my important data off it. the earlier 4 d2s I had all failed eventually.. sure you could say this is guaranteed to happen with any drive after a certain period of time, but these ones didn't last long enough IMO. and one of them just died over night with no warning, it just wouldn't mount anymore. another one fried it's own power supply. my latest one, the 500GB extreme, is still going fine.. but I've relegated it to the backup role for my new g-tech because I don't really trust it.
of course I could just be one of those people that has had a bad run with a product and just slams it from then on.. but, as I said, I don't know anyone that works in music that doesn't cringe when you mention lacie drives, from their own personal experience of a meltdown. so, go ahead and get one if it suits your budget, 7200rpm for sure. but be sure and remain consistent and religious about your backups just in case you fall in to the told ya so category. this applies to any drive you buy of course..

  • Instruments for Adobe Audition CC

    Hello everyone,
is there a way to use instruments in Adobe Audition?
    Thanks

adobe isn't a music company, so not really. any other daw should do music, support vsti, midi, and many other standard features not in audition. pro tools is the industry standard and is releasing a free version but im not sure what limitations it will have. studio one, reaper, cubase, and logic(mac) are just a few of the many others... find one with the price and features you need.

  • Cubase User, thinking of Switching to Logic 8

    Hi everyone,
Just wanted to let everyone know that first off, I have been an avid user of Cubase SX3 for quite some time now, and it is all I have ever known (aside from Reason).
I bought a mac a few years ago and realized that it didn't run as smoothly as I wanted it to with Cubase. I tried taking the jump into Logic 7 last year and test ran it for a few months before i realized it was probably not something I could get used to. It seemed like the transition was too rough and learning curve was steep. Overall, it just seemed counter-intuitive. I wasnt quite sure if it was really because it was much steeper, or i was not comfortable leaving the comfort zone.
Anyhow, to make a long story short. I am interested in giving 8.0 a shot to see if there is a big difference. For the past few years, i have been using Cubase's step designer plugin to randomize midi notes. This is when i have writers block and need some inspiration.
I found that in 7.0, i simply couldnt do this effectively. Is it true that you still have to "build environments"? I found that to be so confusing when i first started. I thought it would be just turning on a midi track and inserting a VST plugin and away I go.
Anyhow, to make a long story short, i assume that logic will run smoother on my mac than my cubase sx3 would. Also i have an unused Mackie C4 that i cannot use with cubase due to incompatibility issues.
Overall, to make a long story short, does anyone know if there is really a huge difference between 8.0 and 7.0? does it have a midi step sequencer that can randomize notes for me? Do i still need to build environments? Is it generally more user friendly than previous versions?
    Thank you!!

I can say that in comparing to Cubase 4 Logic 8 is a lot easier to use and more intuitive. I had bought Cubase 4 and returned it after 30 days because to me it was just too convoluted to get around in it. My other issues with Cubase 4 had to do with the fact that the plugins available simply didn't work with it, and Steinberg was still holding onto the VST 3.0 spec and therefore vendors could not take advantage of the new features, and everyone needed to update the plugs to 2.4 spec. Don't know how true that is anymore, I've long since stopped looking.
With Logic 8 I gained the fact that I get a one window environment. Before, you had to have multiple windows going at the same time, and to me that was too much clutter while I worked. I got 2 screens because of it, and it was still too distracting. With the single window to do everything I need I can work a lot quicker and hence it is a lot better for me to use it than Logic 7. Now I'm looking to sell both my 23" screens and replace them with one 30" screen.
Naming convention changes in logic also helped me. Funny how a little thing like that can help. The fact that I don't have to go to the arrange window, or the audio window to create new audio objects helps a lot. Another HUGE thing for me, and again it's a time and efficiency thing, is that with ever channel strip you see on the left, you will have 2 faders. One for the channel itself and one for the bus or aux it uses. If there are multiple buses simply click the bus above the fader, and the second fader will change to reflect that setting. Very quick, very visual and intuitive, very Apple. Logic 7 was not very 'apple' like when it came to usability and user interface IMHO.
From a feature standpoint, comping is amazing, I love it. Midi-wise the piano roll is more readable, but I don't do midi only work, so randomization and all those things are not features I can answer on. I just use the midi to lay down basic keys tracks and drums.
Last but not least, most, if not all, available plugins work in Logic 8 (I think there are very few exceptions due to deep changes in how multi-channel plugs are handled in logic, so BFD for example is busted right now), which means no real surprises if you want to use an AU version of a plugin you might already have as VST. Most plugs I think come with both, so there shouldn't be any re-buying for you.
Like Rohan suggested, if you know someone who has a copy of 8, you might be able to install it for a day or so and just try it. Of course I don't know that apple would be happy with us suggesting such a thing, but the ULA does allow for 2 installs of logic 8 as long as they're not running simultaneously (one on desktop and one on laptop), so technically you're not breaking the rules.
You might also want to consider Logic Express. Take a look at the feature sets of both and see if it doesn't cover the things you need. I discovered the express has almost all the features of 8 but less bundled apps. It used to be that express was pretty limited in aux and buses but not anymore, and it includes some of the sample synths. If its price was not the same as my Logic 8 update, I would have likely considered it.

  • Cubase SX4 on Intel Mac

    Hi
I just wondered if anyone has started using Cubase SX4 on an Intel Mac?
I can't get any of the plugins I used in SX3 to even show up in SX4. I have seached the Cubase forums and tried all kinds of possible fixes to no avail. eg remove blacklist, select path in plugin info, fix privs etc. To no avail. Any ideas?
Also I would like anyone to use this thread to talk about anything related to Cubase on Intel Macs. Except the boring old vs Logic stuff.
    Cheers All!
    Gor

    Hi Andy
They are all VST PPC. The one Universal plugin I have loads ok.
I just read your thread on the cubase forum. Just for the record I am running SX 4 on an Intel Mini1.66. I posted here as I thought most Cubase users would be using Macpro.
In contrast to the Pro, When SX4 is started up on the mini the cpu use is only 2 clicks on the performance meter about 5%. With 4 universal plugins playing ( the ones included in SX4) the cpu useage is about 35%. With plugs turned off 10%
In SX3 startup cpu is more like 20% and I can use only three instruments. Coure this is all down to Rosetta which I thing does a pretty good job under that load.
I hoped that I could run the host in Universal use universal plugs as much as possible and the odd PPc plug where ness thereby getting more options.
I was thinking about getting a Macpro and running SX3 hoping the shear brute force of all those cpus even under Rosetta would be pretty awesome.
Did you ever try SX3 on the Macpro?
    Cheers!

  • Logic express vs Cubase ?

I'm a guitarist doing fairly basic multi-track recording at home. I used to use Cubase on my PC. Now on the Mac, I use Garage Band, but would like an application that is a bit more powerful.
Regarding Cubase vs Logic express, are they similar? pros and cons? are they compatible?
    Thanks

Logic and Cubase are fairly similar as DAWs. They do same things actually. And they are not entirely compatible (one cannot swap projects between these two programs). As a guitarist you'd find LE9 an awesome DAW. And it's actually cheaper than Cubase.

  • Upgrade to Cubase 4 or get Logic Pro 8?

Apple makes Logic. But does that make Logic any more CPU/RAM/System efficient than Cubase 4?
I own Cubase SX 2 which I cannot install on my Macbook Pro -not intel compatible and I'm trying to find out whether I should upgrade to 4.1 or sell SX 2 and get Logic 8.
I've been using Ableton Live for a couple of years and still is but I am considering a more full featured sequencer since I never really finish anything In Live 6. I have many old Cubase arrangement files but they don't mean that much to me. Is Cubase running efficiently on a Mac? I don't mind learning how to use Logic and if I buy it I'm also getting Soundtrack Pro 2 and I do need an audio editor.
Is Logic Pro 8 that much better as a sequencer than Live's arrangement view/time line sequencer?
What should I choose, Logic 8 or Cubase 4? I'd like to hear your opinions. Thanks

If you use a lot of MIDI, or own a multi-port MIDI interface, you would be better off with Cubase. For some still-unexplained reason, Logic merges all the MIDI ports into one, forcing you to re-assign each port to a different MIDI channel. This is rather annoying. It also means that you cannot record more than 16 MIDI tracks at once with Logic (Cubase allows you to record an unlimited number of MIDI tracks at once). However, Cubase limits you to 99 software instruments at once. It is also very easy to open a MIDI port on a track in Cubase. Logic has a complicated method of re-assigning channels.
    Logic 16. Cubase 99.
The audio editing is also much better in Cubase. Plus, Cubase has 32-bit (true-tape) recording capability.
As far as your question about CPU/RAM/System efficient, Logic would win in that category. You would need a very fast computer to use Cubase effectively. If you are using a laptop, or a slow computer, Logic might be a better choice.
    To answer your other question:
Why would you choose Cubase 4? Less limitations. Better MIDI and Audio features. Easier to use interface.
Why would you choose Logic Pro 8? No Dongle/encryption to slow performance. (Better system/CPU performance.) Better support. High-quality audio engine (almost as good as Cubase). A better alternative to Cubase than DP.
