The font in the preview(I can vouch for this quality, it looked really good on my old Arch box, now it's sort of choppy and not smooth.

  • Need help identifying why my fonts look horrible

I reinstalled Arch on my desktop, but forgot to backup my font configuration files.  I had Monaco set up very nicely before, but now it looks horrible on my new install, and I can't really see what I'm doing wrong. As far as I know, I was just using the ttf-monaco, freetype2-infinality and fontconfig-infinality (w/ osx2 style) packages, and then modified the infinality.conf file (with emboldened Monaco) and Xresources.
This is what it looked like before:

Also, bold isn't showing up in termite but does in gvim? Not sure why that's happening.

grepping for "font" in the termite git log, I stumbled upon this:
    commit a05fdcd4d15316f258175e9a526058bad2c8e7ea
    Author: Simon Gomizelj <[email protected]>
    Date:   Sat Nov 23 20:37:18 2013 -0500
        better warning for no browser
    ...skipping...
Config option to enable/disable bold font
which suggests that a feature to do exactly that (disable bold fonts) has been introduced to the termite codebase. I haven't used termite myself, but either reverting to an older revision than a05fdcd4d15316f258175e9a526058bad2c8e7ea or just enabling bold faces through the said config option could be a solution to your problem.

  • JDeveloper11g - code editor font looks horrible

Why is it that my preferred coding font (Consolas - fixed-Width font) looks like sh.t in JDeveloper 11g? And is there any way to improve that?
    I'm using Java6
    -J.

    Frank,
It would be nice if JDeveloper team can add support for additional nice looking fonts in the next release. The default fonts in Micorsoft Visual Studio in Vista looks really great. If the above is not possible, I would appreciate if you can add support for "courier" font (not courier new) since that is one of the fonts that I think will be used by a lot.
    Thanks
    Bala.

  • Help with exporting. Video looks horrible after export, but great when in premiere pro

Hey guys, looking for some advice on exporting.
When I finish a video, the color and everything looks great while in premiere pro, but after exporting it, the color ends up looking dull and the whole video looks blurry.  I'm filming with a canon vixia hf200 at 60i. It imports as a AVCHD file, I deinterlace it, and then export at the Vimeo HD settings. What can be causing the video to look horrible after exporting? What settings should I be exporting under? Any help would be appreciated!

It looks like you're coming up against some of the colorspace handling issues that the Premiere pipeline has.
Since your source is 60i AVCHD it's HD and thus rec709 colorspace. If it gets encoded with the standard rec601 colorspace (SD sizes are this) then all the colors get crushed. Look for a "709" and "601" radio button in your export settings. If it's not there you're out of luck.
The "blurry" is probably a poor quality de-interlacer. If Vimeo permits interlaced vs progressive do that instead. it's always cleaner to stay in the same video format all the way through.
    TECHNICAL ASIDE:
rec709 is a triangle of possible colors that can be expressed by mixing of ratios of 3 emitters (the R G B corners of the triangle). (they are the RGB phosphors of a CRT and now LCD pixel elements)
rec709 is a bigger triangle than rec601 so it's capable of more colors. but if you accidently map that triangle's corners to the coordinates of rec601 it gets crushed.
In photography the "sRGB" uses the rec709 triangle. A bigger triangle that that is "Adobe RGB". So if you work in Adobe RGB and export to sRGB without conversion the colors get crushed because sRGB in inside the triangle of "Adobe RGB".

  • On Google Chrome the Adobe edge web font looks fuzzy and broken-up. Is there a way to fix this?

I have created a website with Adobe Muse and I am using an adobe edge web font that looks great on all browsers except for google Chrome... On chrome the font looks fuzzy and broken-up. Is there a way to fix this??? Thanks.

    Thank you Sanjit,
I have redone the site using using the font TREBUCHET. The font that I was using that was giving me the problem was EXO which is an Adobe Edge Web font. I'd rather use EXO... Here is a screen shot of a sample page, areas where the type looks especially messed up are circled in red.
This only happens when opened in Google Chrome on a Windows PC. However it looks fine with Chrome on my MAC.

  • Saving as PDF: fonts look crappy?

I have a small test .psd image with just one piece of text. When I save this as .pdf from Photoshop CS4 (using Save As and choose Photoshop PDF format) and open the .pdf with Acrobat 9, the font looks pretty messed up. Here's an example of what I mean:
    http://i26.tinypic.com/5flp2p.jpg
I have attached the example .psd (and saved .pdf) here.
Now the strange thing is: it doesn't happen *always*, sometimes the PDF looks all right. I can't seem to detect what it depends on. I have plenty of available RAM and harddisk space, that's for sure. It seems to occur especially when I already have another PDF open in Acrobat as well. For example, if I copy the test.pdf from above zip to test2.pdf, then open one in Acrobat, then the other, the first may look all right (not always) and the 2nd usually looks messed up.
What's going on? I'm not sure if this is a problem with Acrobat rather than PS, but it happens ONLY with PDFs I save from PS. Never with PDFs from any other source.
Thanks in advance if someone can clear this up!

Font embedding rules, for sure. If a font is considered "locked" and thus un-embeddable, any program is required to convert it to contours as per the PDF language ruels. By keeping a document open under the same name you may just trigger that weird behavior and PS is just not good at it. On the other hand, you could just use a wrong PDF preset and it flattens things to a low quality. As a third possibility, PS could jsut embed the font name reference and then for some inconceivable reason it doesn't get associated in Acrobat. Hard to tell. I'm just not in the mood to do any deeper investigation after a hot, long day full of work, so maybe someone else has a better answer for you...

  • Exporting PDF format for web viewing, fonts look bad

Hey everybody I'm relatively new to indesign so sorry if this is a simple one. I'm doing a newsletter in indesign, which will be used stricktly for web viewing. Whenever I export the file as a pdf the body text fonts look a bit off, as though they are slightly pixelated around the edges. This is not as noticable in the artcile titles with larger font, but any smaller font (i'm using size 14, and futura book) and it gets this pixelation, it is even more noticeable in the thinner type sets of the font. Another odd thing is the first page of the newsletter the fonts are more messed up looking than the following pages where the same font types and sizes are used, the only major difference is the first page has a photo on it, but the fonts that look weird are below the photo not overlaying it or anything like that. I turned off all the compression on the pdf export, also tried it will varying amounts of compression but still have the same issue. And I am viewing this in Mac's Preview program, not acrobat.

Ok, just checked through all the flattening preview highlights and everything looked fine in that. Since my exported document looked perfectly fine in acrobat, but sort of pixelated in mac's preview, is there any way around that?
If you are serving the PDF via a web address it will very likely be viewed in a browser (not downloaded and opened in an app like Preview or Reader). All of the browser displays have slightly different anti-aliasing, which you can see if you zoom in on a screen capture of the text. Here's a line of text from your PDF at 100%, magnified to 400% in Photoshop. From top to bottom Safari, Chrome, Firefox:
There's nothing you can do about the anti-aliasing quality of the different browsers and apps. The PDF you posted has live transparency, so it isn't a flattening issue.

  • I created a brochure in pages and exported it to a pdf format. The pdf looks and opens perfectly using preview but when opened in adobe reader (which my printer uses), fonts look odd, transparencies don't display...etc. Tells me error exists on page?

I created a brochure in pages and exported it to a pdf format. The pdf looks and opens perfectly using preview but when opened in adobe reader (which my printer uses), fonts look odd, transparencies don't display...etc. Tells me error exists on page?

Does this essentially mean there is no way to fix this problem on my end? It's a pity because the design and branding of my brochure will suffer if I remove transparencies and use different fonts. It also concerns me moving forward because it means the quality of print on my pieces will be significantly lower because most commercial printers use Adobe products.

  • MY FONT LOOKS DIFFERENT IN INDESIGN PAGES PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Hello, I have a majo problem here. I have all my pages written in one font, Arial Narrow, however the width of the font looks different from page to page, it looks bold on page 1 and 2, and on page 3 it looks fine,  is there any invisible setting applied to the whol page? why does it look bold? I did try toprint them, they do look different, also, there is no stroke  set, i checked, and color is set to black not registration. Is there anything else I am missing???? Please help!!!!

Transparency isn't something you would adjust, per se.
Imported art may have transparency in it (like a transparent background), or you may have applied an effect like a glow or a drop shadow, or used a blending mode (all of which are transparency effects) on an object on your document page, or even adjusted an object's opacity in the effects panel to make the background show through (this is true tranparency inthe classic sense). Any of these things will result in ID redrawing the page and "emboldening" the type on that page.
There is no way to remove the eefect other than to remove the transparency from the page (if you are showing the icons for it in the pages panel, whcih you set in the panel options, you'll see a small checkerboard next to the page icon in the panel if there is transparency in use). To assure that all pages look the same if you are going to use transparency on any page, you can add a transparent object to the master page.

  • Samsung SyncMaster 245BW Looks Horrible in Lion

I finally upgraded to Lion and while I like the features, my display looks quite a bit different and frankly, quite a bit worse since the upgrade.  I have an early 2008 Mac Pro.  I discovered that Lion changed some things in my System Preferences Display settings and so I had to go through the manual calibration - but the results are still underwhelming.  Fonts look poor (and pixelated - such as in the url bar in Safari), colors are somewhat washed out, etc. I have checked that Font smoothing is turned on (but when I turn if off/on, it makes no difference - is it only on restart that smoothing changes state?).
I also made the fateful choice to download and try software from Samsung called MagicTune but that was a huge mistake as it took away my manual adjustment capability with the 245BW display.  It installed but didn't run and I am not sure if I got all the files uninstalled as the uninstaller did not work with Lion.  I trashed the app package then restarted but until I power cycled the 245BW display I could not manually adjust.  I have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB video card installed (upgrade from original).
Maybe it's time to upgrade to a new monitor.  My wife has a new Syncmaster SA300 on her Mac Mini and it looks pretty good.  The 245BW was considered a fairly good monitor a few years ago when I got it and while it's never been as good as an iMac display (IMHO) I was happy with it until the upgrade to Lion.
Any tips from the gurus on how to make the most out the 245BW with my Mac Pro / Lion?

I should have titled this post something other than Syncmaster Samsung...
I now am starting to wonder if I have a problem with my video card or driver.  My Mac Pro is early 2008 and a couple of years ago I had to replace the stock video card with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 and I wonder if the upgrade to Lion somehow messed with the driver settings for this video card.
I found a driver upgrade available from NVIDIA site but am hesitant to try it as I would have thought that Apple would have included any driver updates for this card as part of the Lion upgrade package.
I have to do something as my display is barely usable.  Signals seem overdriven - lots of sharp contrasts and ghosting of fonts.

  • Just bought the best mac mini, but Netflix looks horrible.. Why?

I bought a mac mini 2.6 ghz, late 2012. I'm using it on a Samsung 40 in smart tv with an HDMI cable. When I get on netflix the videos look horrible, and I'm wondering if there's something I can do to fix the quality of video (other than downloading sliverlight and placing the quality to high on netflix). Thanks for the help

Sorry for the confusion, I meant that I had already done those things and am wondering if there's anything else I can do. I think I solved the problem, though. The quality is just taking a little longer than my last mac to buffer into HD video.
I'm also wondering if I should just use the HDMI adapter that came with the mac mini, things like brightness control and volume control can no longer be controled straight from the keyboard because it assumes I'm not lazy and will grab the controller! Also, web pages and just the overall all look is a bit distoreted because it's trying to push it to 40in..I guess.
    Thanks for the comment!
