Leopard Upgrade Issue (Fixes Don't Work)

Hello all,
I have a 1Ghz Powerbook G4, and have never had OS upgrade problems before. I finally decided to upgrade to Leopard and am sharing in the Blue Screen o' Death fun that so many have experienced.
I have read through the many posts on this. I have done the APE removal stuff, repaired permissions and hard drive, and rebooted while standing on my head -- but I always come back to the BSoD.
There isn't enough room on my HD to do an Archive & Install, because I was going to dump a bunch of old files on DVD-R after I upgraded. I DID do a complete clone of my HD before I upgraded, so most everything is there but:
1) I did some logo/vector work this morning and was stupid to not at least ZIP it all up and email it to myself. I would really like to get this folder back out of my documents if at all possible.
2) Although I have a clone I have never had problems, so I have no idea how to use it. Do I restart holding down C, and use the DVD menu to restore the hard drive?
- If I do that will it be just like it was when I last backed it up?
- If I go this route, can someone tell me if I can possibly get that folder out of my documents first?
- Is there a better way for me to approach this?
Thank you all in advance for your help!
Jason

Is there a better way? Yes, but unfortunately you didn't do it the first time around which is why you are now having problems. So here's what you need to do:
1. Boot from your Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from theUtilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives.
4. Select the startup volume (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will may take several hours depending upon the drive size.
7. After the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Finish the OS X installation.
8. After the computer restarts you will be in the Setup Assistant. Be sure to create the new admin account using the save shortname and password as you are using now. The shortname is the name that appears under your Home folder.
9. You can then use Software Update to update the system software. After you complete the updating process I suggest opening Disk Utility and repairing permissions.
Once you have Leopard running you can begin the process of reinstalling your third-party applications and copying your personal files from your backup clone.
I strongly recommend that before reinstalling any third-party software that you obtain versions that are compatible with Leopard. I also suggest that you repair permissions after installing any third-party software that uses an installer (as opposed to drag and drop installing.)
From time to time perform some maintenance to keep the computer running properly:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.6.1 is Leopard compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that presently AppleJack is not compatible with Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
2. Toast
3. Impression
4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

I believe fixes was made in Reader 10.1.5+ to address protected mode in Citrix.
Can you give that a try?
If you are using Citrix Provisioning Services or SCCM/SMS to deploy out versions, every version of Reader/Acrobat in the farm should be uniformally deployed.  You can see the verison in the "Help" menu... "About..."
If you are using PDF through browser, you can still bring up the preferences via "Control K" when the PDF is viewed in browser context.

  • Since the iOS7 upgrade my iMessages don't work all the time.

Since the iOS7 upgrade my iMessages don't work all the time. The will work for for a few days, but then all of a sudden they stop working. They are still activated in settings, but not sending. If I turn on and off my phone they work again for a while and then stop again. I'm not sure if turning off and on my phone again is re-activating the iMessages which is why they start to work again for a while. But it's a pain having to turn off and on my phone each time, and when sending an iMessage not knowing whether it's going to send this time or not is a bigger pain. Also everytime I turn off and on my phone (which i think is re-activating the iMessages) a text is sent to the following UK number: +447786205094 - so it's costing me each time!
Is there a fix for this?

Turning off and back on or hard reset seems to work for a day or two.  After resetting I am occasionally losing messages that were there before reset.  In addition, I have had 3 messages that I received a notification for when they came in but go into messages and not there.  Message incon still shows 3 unread messages but when I open messages I have no unread messages???  Power on-off or hard reset does not seem to fix this.  At least a reset gets imessages working again.  Hope fix is out soon.  This is a PIA.

  • Since upgrade my ringtones don't work

ringtones don't work on my iPhone since upgrade.  It shows them on my contacts, but I get normal ring when I get a call.

hello, make sure your ringtones are still in your itunes library under the "ringtones" area.
Then if they are in your library, try dragging them again to your phone... especially if you are missing you music too!
    That should fix it!
For some reason, some of the music/ringtones ddn't make it on the upgrade of iOS 5.
    Good luck!

  • Login loop - Apple fixes don't work - HELP!

My iMac 20" (Core Duo) which had been running fine under 10.5.3 has suddenly died.
When I power it up, I get the login window, with my users. Logon as a user, it goes to blue screen, then goes back to the login window.
I've tried the solutions in Apple's note on recovering from the login loop after upgrading to Leopard (although my computer has been working fine after upgrading to Leopard the day after the new OS was released). Nothing works.
I am unable to force it to boot from the Install DVD - holding down 'C', 'option', or 'cmd-shift-alt-delete' are not effective in getting the iMac to boot from DVD.
I am unable to enter into safe or verbose mode at login using either cmd-S or cmd-V. Either combination simply gets me eventually to the login window, where the loop starts.
Zapping PRAM did not make any difference. In fact, I did not get the usual double-chime at all.
I was finally able to get a terminal prompt by entering ">console" as the 'other' user at login. Once there, I attempted to carry out the steps in Apple's note. However, while I am in the console mode, there is a constant stream of error messages, even as I type. By ignoring the error messages and typing, I was able to login and enter my password. I was also able to execute 'mount -uw' (without a / at the end) per Apple's note, and thereafter keyed in the launchctl and ls commands as listed in Apple's note.
However, when I key in the 'dscl....' command as listed in Apple's note, I get stuck. Error messages continue to scroll on the screen, but I do not get a further console prompt.
Seems like my iMac is hosed. Any suggestions/solutions? It's still under AppleCare so I can bring it back to Apple, but I'd like to try and solve it myself so I can safeguard the data on my harddisk.

Phew, being able to login to the other user account on the Mac was the solution. Once I managed to login to that account (had forgotten my wife's account password), I did an Archive & Install of Leopard, per this Apple support document: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1413?viewlocale=en_US
The funny thing is that the Apple document was to remedy a login loop after installing Leopard on an aluminium iMac, whereas mine is the older iMac 20" Core Duo (bought in March 2007). It had been running fine after installing 10.5.3, and I really have no idea what triggered this sudden failure.
    Anyway, working fine now.

  • AE upgrade now presets don't work?

    Hi adobe community,
Just recently upgrade my AE via the desktop ap (I have full CC) and now my animation presets won't work? I get an error box
    ( 0 :: 1 )
After Effects error: Can't import file "Fade Up Characters.ffx": unsupported filetype or extension
    AE 14.1.1
I am trying to get the presets out of Bridge - do I need to also upgrade bridge? I can't see an upgrade for it on my desktop ap.
Any help would be great thanks
    Pat

Phil, a specific bug was fixed in After Effects CC 2014.2 (13.2) that prevented application of animation presets from Bridge on any OS. I can confirm that this bug was fixed on both Mac OS and Windows.
You're likely seeing a different cause of the same problem. Two questions:
    1. What version of Bridge is installed on your computer?
    2. In Bridge, go to Preferences > Startup Scripts. In this dialog is After Effects CC 2014 listed, and is it enabled? If it is not present or enabled, that would explain the problem. A reinstall of Bridge and then After Effects will usually restore the proper scripts, though if you've already done so then I suspect that something may be failing with your install configuration. If you are using custom permissions on your student machines, that could be interfering with the script either being installed or initialized as expected. You'll probably want to contact technical support for help with that.
One further note: although browsing animation presets in Bridge provides a larger interface, it's not the recommended method. The Effects & Presets panel inside of After Effects is the recommended path for browsing and applying presets. Bridge does provide animated previews for the presets included with After Effects, not user-created presets; therefore it is of limited utility. The Effects & Presets panel is faster to use and easier to search.

  • Leopard upgrade issue printing to Xerox Docucolor 5000

We recently upgraded to Leopard and have come up with an issue printing to our Docucolor 5000. When printing multiple copies of a page set up for landscape from AI CS3 or CS4 the first page prints okay. On subsequent pages the paper has flipped to protrait, although the are remains in landscape. Any thoughts on how to overcome this?
Has happened to all of our Macs (all identical) with the upgrade. No other changes to our hardware or software.

Hello Terry. We had the same problems with our Canon printers that use the Fiery print controller. After blaming Adobe for the problem EFI, the makers of the Fiery, released a patch and updated driver that resolved this orientation problem. So I suggest you contact your Xerox support to see if they have these same fixes for your model of Fiery. Or you could check the EFI web site for any updates.

  • Ipad mini (iOS 6.0.2) wifi fixes don't work

please don't reply to this with the fixes that are already posted a zillion times in these forums.  they aren't working for me (and it looks like a lot of other people).  my question is what to do once we're beyond all those.  i received an ipad mini for xmas, and it's running iOS 6.0.2, which is supposedly better than its predecessor (how that can be, i'm not sure).  i love this device enough to continue to put up with the issues, so returning it is not an option.  however, i'm hopeful that someone out there has talked to a mac genius and discovered some trick to keep the wifi connected for longer than a second or two intermittently.
if that's not the case, then when can we expect 6.0.3 or 6.1 to actually resolve the issue?  or (gulp...) is it hardware related?
    thanks,
    Michael

Since the vast majority of iPad mini users are not having WiFi problems then, if you are having consistent WiFi problems on all networks, you very likely have a hardware problem with your iPad mini. This probably cannot be fixed by any iOS software update. The iOS 6.0.2 software fix likely was for a bug that only showed up with certain access points or network configurations. The only way to get your problem fixed is to get your iPad mini replaced by Apple. The fastest way to do this is via the Apple store but you can also arrange for replacement if you contact Apple support.

  • WRT610N - intermittent wireless access for all wireless clients; standard fixes don't work

My network had been working fine for over a year, and now I'm getting intermittent wireless access.  Everything will be ok for a day or two, and then all of a sudden nothing wireless will work (the wired computer will still work): 1 Vista desktop, 1 vista laptop, 1 XP laptop, wireless printer, and iPod touches.
Vista computers will either say "the network has denied the association request" or the "network key is incorrect" (it isn't).  On XP computers, I can get to the point where the computer is trying to acquire an IP address, but it just times out.
    So far:
    - Made sure signal strength is good (most have full bars)
    - Upgraded firmware (worked for 2 days)
    - Made sure all drivers were up to date
    - Changed the broadcast channel (most recent fix, everything worked for 2 days)
I've never had default configurations; my SSID was enabled and set up from the beginning.  I recently moved from WEP to WPA because a new Vista laptop refused to work with WEP.  The clients do not pick up any other network signals from neighbors.
A router reboot sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.  Like everything else I've done, if it works, if it's for a day or so.
Everything worked for a year until about 2 weeks ago (a week after I switched from WEP to WPA - coincidence?).

After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch.  If you have not done this since your last firmware upgrade, please do this now and see if it corrects your problem.  If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
To reset the router press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • Blue screen (Yes Apples posted fixes don't work for me)

I am tired tired... I can't get rid of the blue screen delay at startup in 10.5.2 or 10.5.3. I've tried the fixes. No go... I even tried wiping a drive and doing a Clean Leopard install. After adding the .5.3 update the long delay returns.
My delay is about 4 very long blue minutes. ( After a long gray screen with spinning gear. )
Could there be a hardware issue related to firewire brought out by the .5.2 & .5.3 updates?
I traced the 4 min. delay in my console log. see below.

Panther boots like lightning... Leopard 10.5 is slower but livable. The issue shows up after I do the .5.3 update... even on a clean install.

I was almost certain (from the logs) that there had to be a device incompatibility!
One suggestion: if this was compatible in 10.5.2 - make sure that you post feedback directly to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html/
Include the clipping from the log files - and the fact that you have resolved the problem by removing the device. Presumably the problem recurs if you plug the device back in?

  • Mac Book RAM & Snow Leopard Upgrade Issues

My daughter in law upgraded her MacBook memory to 2 GB and installed Snow Leopard.  She has iPhoto 2008.  Since the upgrade, any movies imported into iPhoto will not play in iPhoto as they had before.  Also, since these changes, any videos she's downloaded have a "jerky" or hesitating transition between frames so people or animal movements are not smooth.
Any thoughts as to what might be wrong and how I can fix these problems?

[Try what is suggested here|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1440?viewlocale=en_US]. No luck? Then I would try installing Sno over whatever is there as if doing an upgrade install.

  • Still any Tiger to Leopard upgrade issues?

For reasons far to boring to explain I purchased Leopard when it was first released (so its a vanilla 10.5.0 disc) but never was able to install. My Macbook Pro (15" 2.2) has an up too date Tiger install and finally I have time to upgrade. i know at the start there were frequent reports of people having real trouble upgrading (a friend of mine, after a week of stress did a fresh wipe and install to fix his errors) and I wanted to know if this is still the case with a 10.5.0 version?
    {I will be superdupering a backup of my current set up just in case.}

  • Snow Leopard upgrade issues

The optical drive on my Macbook Pro no longer reads DVD's. That includes the Snow Leopard install disc. Is there any way I can upgrade to Snow Leopard without a functioning optical drive?

Thanks for the info. I've tried everything you mentioned as well as following the instructions in the article you sent and for some reason, when I restart the computer (with the bad optical drive), the only option I have is to startup with the existing startup disk.
The remote installler on the good computer says I should either have the Mac OS X disc image, or the option to choose a wi-fi network, depending on how I initiate the install. But each time, I don't have any other options to choose from.
I think we may be nearing the end of our rope. If you've got any more suggestions, I'd gladly accept them.
    Thanks again.

  • Mac OS X 10.5: Unable to log in after an upgrade install fix does not work?

    Hello:
After running Software Update, I am unable to log in.
I found the following support article:
Mac OS X 10.5: Unable to log in after an upgrade install
    Article: TS1543
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1543?viewlocale=en_US
However, upon step 8 of the instructions, the following error appears:
    delete Invalid Path
    <dscl_cmd> DS Error: -14009 (eUnknownNodeName)
This is actually after an update (not an "upgrade"), so I'm not even sure these are the appropriate steps.
This is the second time that I have been unable to log in after an update. The first time, I attempted to reset the password with the installation DVD; however, this resulted in "No LDAP Master" errors and I installed Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Server on a second internal drive and configured everything again. After setting everything up on the second install, I was going to reformat the first boot drive. Unfortunately, I'm just back to where I started after running the updates. I'm not sure if having two volumes with Mac OS X Server installed makes a difference in the instructions in the article mentioned above or not.
Another question: Is resetting the password with the installer DVD the same as using the Single User approach ("launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist", "ls /Users", then "dscl . -delete /Users/username AuthenticationAuthority")?
If so, I'll just do that; however, I am hoping that the Single User approach might somehow avoid "No LDAP Master" errors again.
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
