Limited Transitions

I just upgraded (MAC) to CS4 and while everything seems to be running smoothly I am disappointed by the limited number of video transitions that are available - many less than on CS3 for example.
Adobe tell me that it's all you get on a MAC which seems strange to me??
Anyone got any advice?
Thanks.

  • How to Use iMovie Projects in Final Cut Express

I just upgraded to Final Cut Express because of the feature of being able to start a project in iMovie and then finish it in FCE. The steps look simple in the manual File / Open / etc. But when I do it, it tells me File Error: Wrong Type. Is there something I am doing wrong or some other format for the iMovie projects to make them work?

FCE 4.0.1 is the current version of FCE. There is nothing newer.
A new version of Final Cut Studio was released last year; perhaps it can import iMovie11 projects. You would have to try it to find out. If there is an Apple store nearby, copy your Movies folder to a portable hard drive, take it with you, and ask to try it out with Final Cut Pro on one of the Macs in the store. Most stores will let you do this.
Be aware, however, that even if the import works, there are many limitations: Transitions become cross-dissolves. Cropping, Ken Burns effects, color adjustments, titles, green screen clips, PiP clips, voiceovers, sound effects & music tracks are not exported in the XML file.

  • Flash Album Creator

After reading some posts it looks like iWeb '08 can support flash by using the HTML snippet feature. The problem is I do not know how to write in flash. Thus, I am looking for a program that will create a SWF of a photo album. I see a lot of programs for Windows but nothing for MACs.
    Please help!

Apple's Keynote presemtation software in iWork can export a slideshow to Flash (with limited transitions).
Also to HTML: "Save presentations as interactive slideshows that allow viewer participation. By embedding hyperlinks in next and previous buttons, you can let a viewer move effortlessly through a presentation."
And: "To reach a wide audience, export your Keynote presentation directly to YouTube, send it to iTunes, or post it on your website with iWeb. Or use GarageBand to include your slides in a video podcast."

  • Encore crashing

I prepared an Encore burn with nine chapters. First couple of times it crashed, possibly because CS4 is creating some confilct with my external HD, and no it DOESNT DO IT IN ANY OTHER PROGRAM. This time, it just spent 90 minutes transcoding the data, and WHOOPS, i crashed right at the beginning of the burn. Then I relaunched, hoping it will sense its own ten folders with god know what files inside them, but no, it starts the transcoding process from scratch all over again.
Congrats, Adobe, real impressive. I burned 12 DVDs a couple of months ago on the same computer in IDVD, Guess that's where I'm headed back to, or a purchase of DVD studio PRo, cuz this thing is a mess. At least now I know the only good thing about CS4 production premium is after effects, pshop (if you havent ruined it) and Flash. My impressions of your company have collapsed since I bought this.

I'm gonna give this another go now that its updated.  But I'm running a dual 1.83 macintel MacMini - yes, guffaw, but it runs 24-track audio and every other multimedia app I've needed, so if it can't run, then bloatware is the problem. iDVD Is running without a problem. Encore's got more control, as far as I can tell. I know it'll get better. and AE is the shizznit...I really think Adobe should offer free upgrades to CS5 from CS4 considering how many glitches there are....especially on the mac. and the limited transitions in Premiere is a disgrace, considering what FCP offers....but then FCP doesnt come with AE or PS....
Ah - so you're on a Mac, and you just updated the Max OS X to it's latest incarnation then?
And suddenly Encore doesn't work right any longer?
Welcome to Mac OS Update hell - I have a lot of mac user friends who keep having this problem and not just with Encore.
Every time an OS revision comes out, it is probably a really bad plan to immediately install it on a working system as Apple have a history of breaking even their own applications with these updates (ask any Logic 8 user) so what chance do third party companies have here?
If I were you, I would immediately contact Adobe Support & make certain this OS revision is actually supported.
    It might well not be.

I had same question you had ... example is not all of us do slide shows to be shown on T.V. sets ONLY. I find viewing DVD via normal television set to be very poor quality - and so, I don't bother.
Primarily, I am a photographer who makes presentations via digital projection @ 1024x768 - with the choice to make a DVD later as a back up.
I have noted when you do a slide show in iPhoto the presention via my monitor (1024x768 setting) is absolutely perfect .... but when saving to QT with the limited res of 640 x 480, the outcome is horrendous - even with High Quality is activated in QT - i.e dissolve transitions set in iPhoto are terrible when viewed via QT .... especially when you have images showing lots of sky. You get the 'solarization' effect ... regardless of images that are initially imported at high res or not. (I normally import RAW images @ 300 dpi).
Here is the solution that works for me and use .... what I have found to work well so as to have the option to choose resolution to give me full screen, and save to a DVNTSC PRO as one option, I use iMovie and use iPhoto ONLY as a pre-production preparation to set up story line, test out music, etc ...
Too bad Apple just chooses to dictate how their software works - sort of caving in to the status quo, I suppose - much easier and no doubt cheaper for them ... I too would rather have the choice to choose many things, same as done in iMovie - that is, include other QT resolutions for exporting a slide show full screen, etc. - they do allow you to choose resolution when exporting from the library .. but with limited transitions time-wise. Exporting a 'slide presentation' is different. Why?????
My .02, and I seriously doubt iPhoto will ever have this added option ... it is after all consumer level software, not pro level. Yet, iMovie is also same level ... go figure.

  • Slideshow Export to DVD Studio Pro

Is there a way in Aperture to export a slideshow that displays the file name at the bottom of an image so that it can be imported into DVD Studio Pro to be made into a chapter on a DVD?
I really need to do this! HELP!!!!
    Kevin Hawkins

First, export the shots you want to use.
From there you can import directly to dvd studio pro and title them as a dvd slide show if you like. You can also do this with idvd.
The dvd slide show format is limited to 99 shots, though and has some other limitations, (transitions), as well. You can break these by turning the shots into a movie, using something like imovie or final cut pro. Both also support titling.
There are several stand alone programs for doing this too, including photo2movie, and still life, both of which have relatively low price tags.
Search the dvdsp or fcp forms for more on this. Also search for "ken burns effect", which you may want to consider if you do this much.

  • Is there a way to extract the transitions from the trailers in iMovie '11 to use in my own movie?

I want to create an iMovie, and I'd like to use bits and pieces from the different movie trailers templates. Is there a way for me to extract just the transitions from these trailers.
I don't want to use the trailers themselves as they are now because the options are too limited in respect to how I can create the movie. For example, there are times where I only want two words on the screen, but I am forced to use three instead. Also, I would like to delete such things as "cast" and "credits," but it doesn't seems like I can do that either.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Cheers.

    No there is not.
You could create a trailer, share it and then re-import and cut out just the pieces you want, but I don't think that's what you're looking for.

iDVD does not care about file aize, only length.
    iDVD encoding settings:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1502?viewlocale=en_US
    Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
That was for single-layer DVDs. Double these numbers for dual-layer DVDs.
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced two-pass technology to encode your video (The first pass determines which parts of the movie can be given greater compresson without quality loss and which parts can’t.  The second pass then encodes those different parts accordingly) , resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned about the time taken.
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.

  • Limited ken burns effect and exporting out the slide show

im trying to create podcasts of photos ( perhaps 50 )
with OPTIMAL ken burns effects panning and zooming
with my own musical scores using garageband. Using transitions and Voice overs and eventually uploading to a web account with iweb.
Is it better to create this all in imovie?
Iphoto is too limited with its very limited KenBurns effect.
I also dont see the individual time setting option for each image. where is that in iphoto. It seems that every photo has to be the same duration.
some have recommended iphoto then garageband
but i see too many limitations with iphoto.
    anyone have similar experiences?

Yes you can do this with vertical photos.
Click on the little icon at the top left of the photo thumbnail in your project. This will bring up the photo editing panel.
If you want the vertical photo to show up full screen, click crop, and pick which portion of the vertical photo you want to show.
If you want to see the entire vertical photo, click "Fit" and the entire photo will be shown, but there will be black space on either side.
Now click on "Ken Burns" to add the motion effect.
    When finished click "Done".

  • My transitions aren't applying correctly. With video explanation!

I've set the default transition as dip to black. I select some clips and apply default transitions. Only some transitions get dip to black applied to them. I have to manually drag dip to black to the other transitions. When I manually do this the transition still works.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39qBzSXwwg0&feature=youtu.be
Another video. I have dip to black set at 2 seconds, center at cut. The first transition applied correctly. The second only applied for 1;16 (why?) and not centered at cut. I have to manually adjust this and it ends up working. The third transition is only 0;28 and start at cut (why???). When I manually charge it to 2 seconds center at cut it actually does become 2 seconds centered at cut. There's nothing stopping the 2 second center at cut from working, but Premiere just doesn't apply it.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LBomt489cs

I know it is an older post, but I'm experiencing the same issue. Having to adjust 168 transitions manually is a p.i.t.a and I would expect a professional programm as Premier to handle it better. Ann wrote: If a transition does not have handles it will duplicate still frames (diagonal strips) or set it off center. That is fine, if it would be possible to set the default behaviour to duplicate still frames. This is what would be needed. I understand the concept behind the implementaion, but dip to black doesn't fit the usage of other transitions, therefore it is a weak implementation that doesn't address the different needs of Dip to Black. So the main question is, can the default be set to duplicate frames resp. "Center at Cut" for Dip to Black?
Adobe's explanation in Ann's link states:
The pointer changes to indicate the alignment options as you move it over the cut:
If both clips contain trimmed frames at the cut, you can center the transition over the cut or you can align it on either side of the cut so that it either starts or ends at the cut.
If neither clip contains trimmed frames, the transition automatically centers over the cut and repeats frames from the first clip, or from the second clip, or from both clips, as needed to fill the transition duration. Diagonal bars appear on transitions that use repeated frames.
If only the first clip contains trimmed frames, the transition automatically snaps to the In point of the next clip. The transition uses the first clip’s trimmed frames for the transition and does not repeat frames from the second clip.
If only the second clip contains trimmed frames, then the transition snaps to the Out point of the first clip. The transition uses the second clip’s trimmed frames for the transition and does not repeat frames from the first clip. The default duration of a transition, for either audio or video, is set to 1 second. If a transition contains trimmed frames, but not enough to fill the transition duration, Premiere Pro adjusts the duration to match the frames. You can adjust the duration and alignment of a transition after you place it.
Therefore using Ctrl+D never places the transition in the center if there are not sufficient frames after the trim. I need to click in the effects control panel and set the clip to center at cut. I normally use an AutoKey macro just to go from cut to cut using the Arrow Keys and then sending Ctrl+D to place the Dip to Black transition. Therefore I would like to have the default behaviour set to "Center at Cut". Is there any way to do this?
I found out that clicking the Ctrl key changes the duration of a left or right placed transition to the full default duration instead of limiting it to the flesh of the clip. I didn't find any key combination that forces the tranistion to be placed centered.

  • Secret for using Cross Dissolve transitions

Based on my limited experience, the most useful transition is the cross dissolve. It is pretty much the only one I use since it is doesn't draw attention to itself and bears repeated deployment for smooth scene changes. But it has a problem: If you simply make a clip split and put the transition in, it won't work. And it appears even high level people at Apple technical support don't understand what is going on. Based on the apparently incorrect background information they gave me, I have always been extremely careful about making the split precisely where the scene changes and then chopping off a small number of frames in order to make the transition work. But recently I discovered that cross dissolve transitions will always work (regardless of whether the frames on both sides of the cut are similar or even identical) if you delete precisely one frame, and it can be from either side of the split. When you do that the edges of the clip go from squared (right angles) to rounded. The cross dissolve transitions will never work between two clips that have squared edges. They will always work when the edges are rounded. And all it takes to get the edges to be rounded is the deletion one frame. The edges get rounded and cross dissolve transitions work and if you remove more than one frame, and/or do if from both sides of the split. The point is that it will work with as little as one frame. But if you don't sacrifice at least one frame, cross dissolve transitions will never work.
Of course, I am assuming that my experience with iMovie '09 and '11 is not idiosyncratic. Also: I would be interested in knowing if anybody else knew this "secret"--and whether it is widespread knowledge or in any of the books on iMovie.

When one splits clips, don't split close to what will be the beginning or the end of a shot. That's why you should always start the camera BEFORE the action begins and run AFTER the action ends. It only needs to be a 1/2 second to 1 second. Now before you add a cut or a transition you will automatically trim the end and the beginning of the two clips.
I start with a two-hour clip that includes hundreds of scenes, some ending abruptly, some not. If scene one suddenly ends and scene two begins, the natural place to make the cut is where the scene changes. If it happens that there is stuff immediately on each side of the cut that is of value, you would might prefer not to lose even one frame. Usually on one of the two sides the loss of one frame is not so bad. And if you sacrifice that frame you have almost everything you want. But it turns out that the situation is better than that. Since you can also add frames (I now realize), you can end without losing any frames at all. Of course, if you happen to be in a situation where there is plenty of useless stuff on both sides of a cut, the problem the solution is trying to solve does not come up. But I wouldn't change my filming habits just to avoid this problem of adding cross dissolves, since once you know what to handle it, it's not much of a problem. As to whether it is good practice to aim to have extra footage on both sides of a shot, sure. That seems like a good rule of thumb to me. But there are many situations where you don't have that opportunity. Say you were filming John Kennedy in Dallas or life among the Taliban or your kid falling off a horse. Life may not give you the chance to put useless footage at the end or beginning of your shot. In my case, I have hours of amateur home movies that stop at all sorts of odd places. I can't go back and reshoot it.
I suspect Apple simply expected you to do this. This will inherently eliminate what may be a tiny bug that you overcome by trimming 1 frame.
Most transition types don't require the removal or addition of a frame. When I called Apple technical support about this, the person I talked to was surprised by this feature too. And he found it happening with at least one other transition, I think. He handed me over to a specialist. That specialist gave me a complicated theory for why this was happening. He said that the frames on both sides of the cut had to look fairly different for the transition to work. And sometimes when we think we have made the cut exactly where the scene changes, we haven't in fact. So we need to cut away until both sides are definitely different. And you will notice that often the thumbnail for one side will be an image from the other side. This lead me to think that I was required to make sure that on either side of the cut there was definitely a significant change of image. But all you have to do is get the edges of the clip to become rounded. And you can do this by adding or subtracting a frame at any location. Of course, if you are going to be chopping off multiple frames for any reason, you will also solve or avoid this problem. So, if Apple was thinking what you suggest, they haven't given any guidance about it in print. And the tech support people don't seem to know it.

Strange, my friend on the latest Firefox could not see the search bar, but when I asked her to load into Safari, the webpage loaded up fine (on a Powerbook). I then tried to load up the page on Safari with my Powerbook, but no dice.
I then booted up into Windows XP and tried viewing my webpage via IE 7, Firefox 3 AND Safari, and the search bar STILL does not show up. The search bar is not limited to Mac OS X and Safari (on a Mac) right?
