Line saver tariffs - take a second look at the fig...

Having done the maths on BT's "line saver upfront paying of rental", the deal is not quite what is portrayed, at least not for me.  ! currently pay a line rental of £13.29 pm, but get a paper-free discount of £1.25 pm, effectively reducing the line rental to £12.04 pm  ( or £144.48 per year).  If I change to "line-rental", the monthly fee works out at £9.99 pm (or £119.88 per year).  However, on changing to "line-rental saver", I would loose the paper free discount of £1.25 pm, resulting in an effective rate of £11.24 pm.  The bottom line saving being only 80p per month (or £09.60 per year, and not the advertised annual saving of £39.60 per year).  Hardly an incentive to pay upfront to BT !!  P.S. the figures are also pro-rata when the vat increases 20 % in Jan 2011.

Your logic and maths is flawed.
Without Line Saver Rental, the total monthly charge for line rental is £13.29 less the paperless billing discount of £1.25, making £12.04 as you correctly state.
With Line Rental Saver, the monthly charge is one twelfth of £119.88 which is £9.99, meaning that you are saving £2.05 per month or £24.60 per year.
Your logic is flawed in double accounting the paperless billing discount.
What is advertised is correct for new customers who cannot get the paperless billing discount as it has been generally removed for new customers.
Their saving is hence £24.60 plus twelve times £1.25 which equals £39.60 for new customers.

  • Save screen takes 30 seconds or more to open

I've been having a problem recently where on any program, whenever I click Save As, or Save for the first time, it takes at least 30 seconds to open the finder window to choose where I want to save the file. I just have the beach ball, and it finally loads up, sometimes taking as long as a full minute. This has only been happening for about a week or two, and nothing else on the Macbook Pro lags. Any ideas what could cause this?

Right, sorry, I was thinking Terminal for some reason. No errors come up while the beach ball is spinning. I do all system updates as soon as they come out, and there hasn't been one since June if I remember correctly. I haven't installed any new software in the past couple weeks. I haven't tried Safe Mode yet, but I will try that soon.
The thing that makes this more tricky is that it doesn't do it 100% of the time. It seems like it will be fine for a while after I reboot, and then it starts doing it. However, it definitely isn't an issue of running out of resources since my Macbook Pro has 8GB of RAM, 40GB hard drive space empty, and the latest processor before the i5 was released.
Another thing to note is that once the save dialog window finally comes up, if I close it and then press save again, it opens normally. However, if I close the application, reopen it, and then try to save, it will hang again.

  • Quick Tip of the Week: Take a Quick Look at the files in Trash

I ran this Quick Tip which was emailed to me today, but noticed that the Quick Look icon demonstrated isn't on my Toolbar, instead there's something called a Path icon, and Finder>View>Customise Toolbar is greyed out, so I do not appear to be able to change it. Quick Look works when I press the space bar, so it is on my iMac.
Does anybody know why Quick Look isn't on the Toolbar, and how to change the Path icon for Quick Look?

To open a Finder window, click a clear space on your Desktop. You'll see the word Finder top left in your screen. You can press command Command N on your keyboard or use your mouse and from the Menu Bar (top of screen) click File/New Finder Window.
Migration Assistant will transfer all your files and important settings for you.
To see exactly which Mac OS version you are running, click the Apple logo top left in your screen, then click, "About This Mac". The version number will be displayed in that pane.

Is this what you mean? The size will depend on the size of the window. I made it small to fit here.

The desktop image is fine, taken from the exact same pool of jpg photos.  However, as soon as the slide show screen saver comes on, the images are scrambled.  What is it about the apple screen saver algorithm that scrambles the pics?

  • How can I take a photo on my iPhone then save it into a second Album, not Camera Roll?

How can I take a photo on my iPhone then save it into a second Album, not Camera Roll?

All photos captured or saved with the iPhone are stored in the Camera Roll which cannot be changed.
You can create an album to place photos in that are in the Camera Roll which does not duplicate the photo. It creates a pointer to the original photo stored in the Camera Roll. If the original is deleted from the Camera Roll, it will be removed from the album as well.
Import the photos from the Camera Roll with your computer as with any other digital camera followed by deleting the photos from the Camera Roll after the import process is complete. Create an album or albums for the imported photos on your computer followed by transferring the albums from your computer via the iTunes sync process which is selected under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes.

  • [Solved] File "Save As" takes more than 20s before dialogue box opens

Whenever I use File "Save As" in any non-kde application (eg firefox, medit, kino), the dialogue box opens immediately but then takes more than 20 seconds to display the contents of the initial directory, after which I can then save the file. Alternative directories can then be selected instantly without problem.  Starting File Save As again, causes the same long delay, so its not a caching issue.  This occurs in XFCE4, LXDE & KDE.
KDE apps, however, list the contents virtually immediately, indicating that its not a disk or filing system problem.
The XFCE4 theme (under Appearance > Style)  is Foresight, and the icon theme is Nuvola.  Changing these does not make any apparent difference.
This is on a SATA drive with 84 GB free running Arch 64.
Can anyone suggest how this can be rectified?

Many thanks for that - problem solved.
The file contained 323 lines pointing to a single directory with multiple subdirectories, none of which was a removable device.
Moving the file to another location, resulted in the File Save As operation functioning properly.
Not sure if I actually use gtk-bookmarks as it hadn't been modified in over 6 months.
Anyway, thanks again - its made a big difference.

  • Looking for the best route to take in setting up dvd

I'm new to this, and don't have time to make many mistakes... SOO I'm looking for advice.
We're setting up a DVD (duh) and it's rather complex. I'll try to explain it as clearly as possible:
1 - main menu - that links to 5 'sections' and a play all button.
2 - within each section, there will be a play all or 'clip' selection option. Each section will have approximately 5 to 12 clips ranging from 30 seconds to 7 minutes each.
    My questions are:
-- how should i set up each section? Do i keep all the clips as seperate clips? or do i create one big movie from the clips for each section and use chapter markers? or should i create stories for each section out of the individual little clips?
I guess i don't quite get how to do a play all in each section AND do a play all of ALL the sections -- the easiest.
Am i giving enough details for anybody to help me out on this?
Thanks for any help in advance!!!
    Powerbook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Let's start again
1.) Add all the video clips to ONE track
2.) The first clip will AUTOMATICALLY have a marker added at its beginning
3.) Add a Marker at the Beginning OF EACH clip (but default it will be Chapter 2, then Chapter 3 then Chapter 4 then Chapter 5. You do this by clicking Above the time line
4.) take a look at this picture it shows these steps http://dvdstepbystep.com/STORIESDETAILS/03_SD.jpg, IGNORE the green and orange JUST focus on the Blue (the Green is audio so you should have one Green)
5.) Highlight the Track which is in the Green Folder in the Blue section here http://dvdstepbystep.com/layofland.php (the menu is highlighted in that image, you will have to move down)
6.) Click Add Story which is in the Red Section (also the green icon 6th from left in this picture) http://dvdstepbystep.com/STORIESDETAILS/03_SD.jpg
7.) You will see a story added in the track, the little green icon beneath the track icon to the left hand side here http://dvdstepbystep.com/
    STORIESDETAILS/05_SD.jpg
8.) Click on the story Tab at the bottom of the window as show here http://dvdstepbystep.com/STORIESDETAILS/06_SD.jpg
9.) Then drag the markers from the left hand side to the right.
If you drag Marker 1,2,3,4,5 into the right the Story will PLAY ALL
10.) If you just drag Marker 2 in for instance, that story will ONLY play section 2.
11.) Create a PLAY ALL story with all 5 markers.
12.) Create a Story for each section by ONLY dragging the marker for the section
13.) If you want to play from chapter 2 on, target the jump from the button to the Play All Story::Chapter 2

  • T400 WiFi: Lenovo immediately connects, but Microsoft takes 60 seconds longer

    I'm running Win 7 on a T400 with an Intel 5300 card.
When I boot-up, the Lenovo Access Connections immediately connects to the WiFi network. However, the Microsoft wireless indicator in the notification panel indicates that I am not connected to the WiFi network. It takes almost 60 seconds for the Microsoft Win 7 indicator to show that I am connected. (I've confirmed the behavior by opening the Network Connection and Sharing Center.)
Why does the WiFi immediately connect in the Lenovo Access Connections but take much longer in the Win 7 Network Connection and Sharing Center? Shouldn't they work simultaneously?
    Thanks!!
    T400, X220

Good question.  I had to try it myself just now.  T400. 5300. Win 7 Pro 64.
I don't see that behavior.  The Windows wifi indicator takes a little longer while the tool tray is being populated, and does spin briefly, but not for 60 seconds.  I don't know what's happening during the time it takes me to log in.
Do you see the same thing with a different router?  Or are you using an access point with a router behind it?
It may be that the Lenovo wifi thingy lights up when the wifi radios are associated, but the Windows indicator doesn't show a connection until the DHCP address is assigned (and whatever else goes on) or fails.
[edit] it could even be an artifact of whatever network security you are running.
Just total speculation on my part,
    Z.

  • Line saver rental costs & complicated bill

I paid £141 in advance for Line Saver Rental in Oct 2013.  This is still being advertised on the BT site at that rate for 12 months.  My latest bill is overly complicated with charges being amended back to Oct last year.  However from what I can make out from this bill is that the Line Rental saver charges have changed.  Why? If the 12 month rate is still the same as when I paid in October  surely there should be no adjustment.  Is it not fixed for 12 months anyway?
This months bill, because of the changes to the BT tariffs has no end of credits and recharges itemised. How on earth is anyone supposed to know if it is correct - far too complicated.

The recent bill I received would confuse most people -  However all three line entries for my line rental are for £0.00 which is correct overall as I have paid it in advance for the year. However it does appear that they haven't bothered to explain on the bill why all the lines are there (presumably due to standard monthly  line rental increase that occured on 4th Jan).  The other charges on my bill are properly explained .... ie they refund the advance charges from 4th Jan to your bill date that you paid on your last bill and bill you for the period from 4th Jan to your bill date at the new charge rate that applied from 4th Jan pro-rata.

  • Line saver and Monthly line bill

    Hi
Just had a bill for a months line rental and charges because no one at BT thought to notify me that last years line saver contract was about to expire. A little note on the last bill or a simple e-mail would have been enough, but nothing.
So now after renewing the line saver contract they are going to take the months rental as well as the line rental I have paid for in the renewed contract, I have been told they will credit my account next month. What a cheek, so BT get a cheap loan at my expense, what I want to know is how can I get that amount paid back into MY account where it belongs?

I have to say that my experience was exactly opposite to yours and exactly what it should have been. I was both reminded on my bill and sent a reminder email.
Here is an extract from the reminder email:
"Your Line Rental Saver is ending on 19-10-2011
Stick with line rental saver, and you'll carry on saving £46.80 a year. Just pay £120 for your annual line rental upfront - which is the equivalent of £10 a month.
You'll need to visit www.bt.com/rentalsaver after 19-10-2011 to renew."
    and from the bill:

  • Re: cooL, it takes 14 seconds to insert 721 records to SQL Server 7.0

I'm always a little worried when someone is concerned about performance and then asks the question(s); how can I make this faster? or Is this normal?
There is no standard that can be applied to performance (although you may find limits and constraints published by vendors). I'm connected to a SUN 15000 with 16 processors 32 gigabytes of memory and several terabytes of storage spread across several hundred disk drives I'm guessing I could do inserts "faster" then what you are stating. But that doesn't really matter. What really matters is; how fast do you need the inserts to be? Answer that, and now you have a goal. Without that goal, performance tuning is a complete waste of time. So, what's your goal (and what are you willing to do about it)?
There are some general coding guidelines that can be used to make sure you are not hurting performance; things like using PreparedStatments, batching together inserts, using efficient string concatenation as described by a previous post, using multiple threads when inserting into multiple tables. There may be specific database procedures you can try, for instance, If you are inserting these into a table for the first time (an initial load), some database allow you to turn of logging which can increase your performance significantly. As mentioned, there may be 3rd party drivers that allow for enhanced performance of inserts. I don't know of any specific API calls that will categorically help insert statement performance, but that doesn't mean there isn't something there.
There are other things that can be done, usually from within the database itself, mostly to do with memory utilization, changes in checkpoint frequency and optimal logging that can also enhance insert performance, but that is probably beyond the scope of what you are asking and definitely out of the scope of this forum.
Once you know your goal (i.e. 200 inserts per second, or complete the process within 10 second ...) Then you need to determine where you are spending your time. Do you know how much time you are spending in the database vs. reading from the file system, or in the processing in between? Wouldnt it be awkward if you spent time optimizing the code for inserts only to find out later that it was 2 seconds for the inserts and 12 for reading the records off the file system?
It's possible that someone may read this and say, this is ridiculous and way too much work, why would I do that? The answer is, if performance and tuning is too much work, then you simply don't require the additional performance so let it go. If you actually need better performance, and you always know when that's true, then these suggestions and the suggestions of the other posters are not nearly so onerous and may be helpful.
When talking about application performance, I sometimes say that people don't know how good it could be, and I think that results from people not setting and working towards specific performance goals. To be clear, faster, normal and optimized are not practical performance goals, "x% faster" and "less then x seconds and x inserts per second" are.

    MartinHilpert,
You said that my response was not really nice, I guess implying that I was wrong or my reply was not of any value or maybe you just meant it wasnt nice. Im not really sure what you meant, I dont know your background, and I mean no disrespect, but I disagree with what you wrote and I do have a couple of comments.
I do believe that working on performance initiatives without goals (as you described) can teach you a bit about performance and performance tuning techniques, but I do not consider an ungraded learning initiative to be an effective methodology for the tuning of an application.
but if it's just a little slow ...
they won't complain but just talk behind the backsI disagree that paranoia is a reason for looking at performance. If for some reason you are worried that performance is slow all you have to do is ask the users, there is no reason to assume anything. Ive found users in my world to be very forthcoming about their perceptions of performance, and given the opportunity to voice their opinion, very willing to complain on even the smallest concern. I would be surprised that your users would not do the same unless you or your group is unusually unapproachable or perhaps intimidating for some reason. But I cannot imagine why that would be; we all serve at the pleasure of the users.
So, when your app works and you are finished and you
have time, try to improve performance anway. So when you are finished, you are not really finished? Sounds like you are using a consulting project methodology; the source for most never ending projects (please don't get prickly, I'm a consultant). To me this philosophy sounds a bit impractical and not at all trackable from a project management or funding perspective.
So, when your app works and you are finished and you
have time, try to improve performance anway.Your company has time and money to spend on never ending performance initiatives (without goals, they are by definition never ending), but no time to determine if the performance initiatives save money or enhance the user experience or more formally, moves application performance into SLA compliance?
That doesn't sound correct to me, and I doubt if a company would want to be perceived this way.
In retrospect, it is possible that yours is my dream company with my dream job, one without funding or time constraints, and no one holding me statistically responsible for the performance of my applications. Although I must admit I would not like people talking behind my back. :)
    Regards.

  • PSE 8 Organizer take 60+ seconds per task

Most everything I do in the PSE 8 Organizer seems to take 60+ seconds to complete.
When I move a tag from one sub-category to another, 60+ seconds.
When I delete a picture from the catalog, 60+ seconds.
When I add a new face tag in a photo, 60+ seconds.
It doesn't seem to matter if I have 940 photos or 140 photos in the catalog.
What is PSE looking for with each task it does?
The only error indication I get is a 'dunk' sound when the Organizer starts up,
(like the sound you get when you click on something you shouldn't click on),
but no error dialog or warning shows up.

John, I have a total of seven people tags and thanks for the advice.  It's not a keyword tag issue.
But, hallelujah, I have found the problem!  It's the 'Folder Location View'.  Stay out of it!  It turns a face tagging from a half second task to a 65 second task.  It appears that, when in the Folder Location View, after you complete a task like face tagging PSE will then go off and re-read (for 65 seconds) all your Windows folders and regenerate the folder view.  When you switch to the Thumbnail View and do the face tag then PSE comes right back immediately.  I was able to recreate this scenario several times.  Each task I did in Folder Location View took 65 seconds or more.  The same task in Thumbnail View takes half a second tops.
