Linking captivate to excel sheet?

Is there a way to link captivate to an excel sheet - where if a person puts in an identifying number; captivate jumps to a set slide?
What I'm trying to do is the following:  I have an excel sheet with the 2 columns:  Column 1 - EE ID and Column 2 - another number from 1-30.  When the person puts in their EE ID (and is validated by Captivate), Captivate 'reads' the excel sheet and looks at Column 2 and jumps to a set page in the captivate project.  Is this doable?

If I understand correctly, you want a person to jump to a particular slide depending on the ID they type into a box. Each ID corresponds to a specific Captivate slide, which no overlaps. (ID #1 and ID#2 don't both go to slide 4.)
Normally I'd use an Advanced Action. Instead of thinking of things as related information in columns that Captivate has to look at, think of it as instructions telling Captivate to make a series of decisions based on whether or not certain conditions are met. The person types their information in a text box, clicks a button, and Captivate executes the Advanced Action and goes through the process of deciding what to do: "If the EE ID entered is 1, go to slide 4. If the EE ID entered is 2, go to slide 5. Etc."
For more information about Advanced Actions and variables, check out Lilybiri's blog: http://blog.lilybiri.com/
Of course, I did say I'd normally use an Advanced Action. From how you've explained your scenario, it sounds like there would be many, many decisions to combine in one Advanced Action. (At least 30.) These days when things become that complicated I start thinking of ways to use JavaScript to make my life easier, either alone or in conjunction with an Advanced Action.
Anyway, first things first. Did I describe what you want to be able to do correctly, or did you mean something else?

  • Linking Captivate to Excel?

    Hi All,
    We have developed an IT dashboard using Captivate 5.5 where systems are all in individual boxes and either showing as a Red, Amber, Green based on how much capacity is available on them. To update these right now is a manual process each month.
    I have been asked whether or not a changes made to an excel spreadsheet can be directly linked to Adobe Captivate.
    For example, if someone changes a system field in an excel sheet to RED, then can it be setup so that the corresponding box in the Captivate project also automatically change to RED? Is there a way to have linking between excel and captivate like this?
    Any help would be most appreciated.
    Cheers
    Greg

    There is no standard Captivate functionality to make this happen. However, you could probably pay an AS3 developer to create a widget for you that did this.  No idea about costs.

  • PDF Links in Excel Sheets - Adobe Prof. won't open

    When i try to open a pdf document which is embedded as a link into a excel sheet, Adobe Professional 7.0.0 pops up for a second a close itself again instantly.
    I could figure out that the problem lies somewhere in the .pdf file extensions which are managed by the OS (Windows XP in this case). So what im doing is deleting all the WinXp PDF File extensions and creating a new one.
    This "hotfix" works as long as i don't reboot the PC. As soon as Windows starts Adobe Professional starts some kind of startup and the problem occurs again.
    Anyone a idea ?
    Thanks in advance

    Have you tried right clicking on a PDF and selecting open with by default, and select AA?

  • Session problem in excel sheets

    Hi.
    I am using JDeveloper 9.0.3.3 and Excel 2002. When I try to open a JSP page in a excel sheet the session data can not be received. Is there a way to avoid this because I need that data for authentication issues.

    I do not get session id neither by cookie or by URL rewriting. Here is the code of the page which contains the link to the excel sheet where the session id is lost:
    <%@ page import = "java.sql.*" %>
    <%@ page import = "java.text.*" %>
    <%@ page pageEncoding="UTF-8"%>
    <HTML>
    <HEAD>
    <TITLE>Phone call history</TITLE>
    </HEAD>
    <BODY>
    <%
    try {
    String userName = (String)session.getAttribute("username");
    if(userName == null){
    %>
    <jsp:forward page="logon.jsp"/>
    <%
    String p_user = request.getParameter("phoneuser");
    %><a href="<%= response.encodeURL(request.getContextPath() + /chief_detail_excel.jsp?phoneuser=" + p_user) %">">This page in excel</A><%

  • Create link to excel sheet from ssrs

    Hi!
    I,m trying to create a link from SSRS to an excel sheet that is placed on a server (in my case the same server as Sql is running)
    \\csedb30\BusinessWarehouse\VDC\Actual\exceltest.xlsx.  I have made links to url sites and to other reports within reporting services, But this time i would like to use a
    textbook control in a report and when the user click on the texbox it should open up the excel sheet in the same way that a hyperlink works in excel. The problem seems to be that i have to link to a source on a server not a URL adress.
    Is there any solution to this.
    Best regards
    Arne
    Arne Olsson

    Hi Arne,
    In this scenario, you just need to put    file:\\csedb30\BusinessWarehouse\Linktest.xlsx in the Go to URL expression. Don't put "=" in the expression,
    and the path will be underlined. And you need to redeploy the project to make it work. After you click the textbox, the path will be shown in the browser.
    If you have any question, please feel free to ask.

  • How to link output page to output excel sheet?

    Hi,
    I have written a program where the output is downloaded as an excel sheet.There are 2 option in the output
    either we can display the output in the form of a ALV or we can download it into an excel sheet.
    Now,I want to know how I can link that excel sheet to the ALV display output,which should finally display
    the alv as the first page and the downloaded sheet as the next page.
    Regards,
    swain19

    Hi,
       You can link output type to your zprogram through NACE transaction.
    There you need to select the 'Application' and click on the 'Output types' push button.
    for ex:
      go to txn NACE and choose V3(Billing) then it will take you to the next screen there you can provide
    your ZOutput type or choose a existing one and double click on it.
    Now it will take you to the output type, there you will find 'Processing routines'.
    In processing routines you can link your program to corresponding medium of processing like Fax or Print output.
    If you want anymore help, you can always get back to me.

  • Acrobat X - Word with linked Excel-Sheets is blank

    Hello Acrobats,
    the following problem occurs using MS Office 2007 on Win XP with Acrobat X PDF-Maker:
    A MS Word document has a linked Excel-Sheet inserted.
    The PDF maker is used to create a PDF with no tags or PDF/A specification.
    With Acrobat 9 no problems occured.
    Now, with Acrobat X the following happens: The part, where the Excel sheet is positioned, only a black frame is shown with a "play"-button (as shown below).
    Does anybody know how to avoid this problem?
    Thanks in advance
    mannikaltz

    Hi ,
    This is a known issue and this will be fixed soon in the next sub-release of Acrobat X . Till then ,as a workaround , you can copy paste the contents of the 'linked' file to your word file ,instead of linking the file , this will produce an equivalent PDF .
    Thanks for your feedback .
    Thanks,

  • Linking to a specific sheet within an Excel file

    Hi-
    I'm using RoboHelp for Word and generating a WebHelp help
    system. I'm using the the "ExecFile" macro to link to an Excel
    workbook. This works fine, but I'd like to automatically link to a
    specific tab (sheet) and cell within the Excel file. Does anyone
    know of a way to do this? Is there perhaps an argument that I can
    pass along with the macro to Excel to do this? Thanks!
    -Chris

    Welcome to the forum.
    In Snippet 84 on my site there is a method of doing that
    using RH HTML. Maybe you can figure a way of tweaking the webhelp
    output to do what you want.

  • LINK Excel.Sheet has issues with Non-English Office

    In non-english office when we issue
    LINK  Excel.Sheet.12 command, the range parameter is causing "Error! Invalid Link" error (¡Error! Vínculo no válido in spanish).
    Example if we do:
    {LINK  Excel.Sheet.12 C:\\Temp\\Text.xlsx  Test!R1C1:R2C2 \a \f 4 \h}
    We get invalid link error (in spanish).
    But when we remove the range parameter:
    {LINK  Excel.Sheet.12 C:\\Temp\\Text.xlsx  \a \f 4 \h}
    It works. This of course by default links only the first sheet by default. Anyone knows if this is a bug in Office for non-english? We are using Office 2010.

    Hi V.C.A,
    Based on your description, it seems that your issue was related with the field link feature of the Word, and this forum is mainly discussing about the Word development questions related to VSTO, VBA and .etc. For your issue, I will recommend you going to

  • Open excel sheets in separate windows by clicking link.

    Hi,
    I have a web page which has a link. When user clicks on the link, a servlet is invoked that creates an excel sheet and opens it in MS-Excel. I used "res.setContentType("application/vnd.ms-excel");" to achieve this.
    But every time I click the link it opens up the sheet on the same MS-Excel window. It doesn't open up the excel sheet in new other window.
    Now here is my requirement: Whenever user clicks on the link, a new MS-Excel window should open up containing the excel sheet. So if user clicks the link 3 times, then 3 separate window should open up each containing its own excel sheet.
    Can anyone help me out in achieving this?
    Thanks in advance...

    Hi, try this
    In JSP/HTML
    Export To Excel
    In Servlet
    response.setContentType("application/vnd.ms-excel");
    response.setHeader("Content-disposition","attachment; filename=MyProjectExport.xls" );
    In web.xml
      <servlet>
        <servlet-name>excelservlet</servlet-name>
        <servlet-class>myPackage.ExcelServlet</servlet-class>
      </servlet>
      <servlet-mapping>
        <servlet-name>excelservlet</servlet-name>
        <url-pattern>/MyProjectExport.xls</url-pattern>
      </servlet-mapping>Assuming I haven't made any typos obfuscating the real packages, it
    should work. I think the step you are missing is to add the servlet
    mapping so that the servlet name is MyProjectExport.xls
    In the example above, I've made my servlet name match the filename in
    the Content-disposition, though in my real application it deosn't seem to
    matter that they don't match. In the html, you link to the name of the
    servlet, rather than the filename, but if you name them the same, I
    guess it won't matter.

  • Dont know how to add or embed a word document or an excel sheet in a Captivate 8 slide

    I am developing a Captivate 8 elearning module. I have been trying to embed a word document in a slide and an excel sheet in another slide of this Captivate elearning module but I could not see any option to do this. Please help!!

    If the content is online you can use the microsoft office online viewer. Make a web object interaction and put the url below in and add the URL of the document to it, so just replace the URL in the example below.

  • Linking excel sheet

    Hello All,
    i have generated a report where in i get the glcode and the gl description
    from the cube into my report.
    now i dont want the description which has from the r3 to cube.
    i want to maintain an alternative description for the glcode at query level,
    not cube level nor r3 level.
    Ex. Report is as follows
    glcode gldescription
    531   salaries
    532   distribution
    i want to change salaries to salaries hr department
    i want to change distribution to distribution hr department.
    that means i want to maintain alternative description, the very important
    point being, at the query level.
    How can i achieve this.
    Plz suggest solution.
    Regards
    Santosh

    Hi
    You can maintain alternate description at the query level through a VBA Code
    In the excel sheet, lower pane...right click -> view code -> write code here to replace your old description with alternate description
    This will happen in runtime
    Assign points if useful
