I had orignally thought of using Ubuntu 12.0.4 LTS as the OS and KVM for virtualization. As I read through the supplied docs and attempt to do just that I have some concerns. First is the Embedded RAID controller. According the quick start guide:
"VMware ESX/ESXi or any other virtualized environments are not supported for use with the embedded MegaRAID controller. Hypervisors such as Hyper-V, Xen, or KVM are also not supported for use with the embedded MegaRAID controller. "
I went into BIOS and checked the settings for the Embedded RAID controller and saw that there were two options: MegaRAID and Intel RSTe.  I could not find any thing in the documentation about the difference between these two settings and what would happen if I selected one over the other. I tried both controllers with the two installed drives as a RAID 1 pair and as non-RAID disks with the same results.
The second issue I ran into was that the Ubuntu installer did not recognize either of these two controllers and failed to install. Based on the published documentation, I saw that RHEL 6.4 was supported, so I downloaded and installed CENTOS 6.4 . The installer did detect the Intel RSTe controller as a "Firmware RAID" and installed what I believe is OS level RAID configuration. I say that because when I check the Intel RSTe bios, is still shows two non-raid disks.
So with this background, I am re-grouping to see what is the best way to proceed and have the following questions:
1) Will I be able to run a virtualized environment at all with my current hardware config?
2) What is the difference between the embedded RAID options: MegaRAID and Intel RSTe?
3) Can I just ran both my drives as bare drives without any RAID? Will that deal with the virtualization issue of not being supported with the embedded MegaRAID controller?
4) Do I have to order hardware RAID controller?
5) I have read about the Flexi-Flash disks having the ability to slip-stream Linux drivers during the install but no procedures on how to do that. Where can I find them?
6) Has anyone had any luck installing Ubuntu with this hardware configuration? Is it supported? Or should I just press on with CENTOS?
7) Related to CENTOS, I installed the basic server option and added GNOME desktop with X-Windows to get some GUI Admin tools. When I trying using startx to initiate a session, it appears that the X-Windows server attempts to start, the screen goes black into Graphical mode and drops back to the CLI with a message that server terminated successfully. Anyone know what is going on here?
Sorry for the long message and I appreciate any help that you can provide!
Thanks!
Dave

Hello David,
If you're going to load ESXi on these servers, there are a few things you need to consider when  ordering them. For instance, you cannot boot from ESXi using a software  RAID controller. So, even if you have some local/internal hard drives  and even if you can install the ESXi OS on those hard drives, you will  not be able to boot from them if you have the software RAID controller.  "VMware ESX/ESXi or any other virtualized environments are not supported  for use with the embedded MegaRAID controller. Hypervisors such as  Hyper-V, Xen, or KVM are also not supported for use with the embedded  MegaRAID controller" (source: Cisco USC C220 Server Installation and Service Guide).  If you're going to use a SAN and you don't even need the internal hard  drives, I recommend using what Cisco calls the Flexible Flash Card. This  card is basically an SD card that comes pre-configured with four  virtual drives. The first drive is the Cisco UCS Server Configuration  Utility, the second is the HV or Hypervisor, the third contains the  Cisco Drivers, and the fourth is the Cisco Host Upgrade Utility. The HV  drive is where you can install your ESXi server and can be made bootable  from within the CIMC. This is much easier than worrying about which  kind of RAID controller to get, and I believe it is a little less  expensive than getting local drives with a hardware RAID controller.
Here is a high level  overview of the steps to follow from racking to booting ESXi.
To configure the CIMC:
Install the Flexible Flash Card in the server.
Rack the UCS server and plug a network cable into the management port.
Power it on.
Press F8 to configure the CIMC information (IP address, password, etc.).
From a computer on the same network, open a browser and connect to the CIMC using the IP address assigned in step 3.
Go to Servers | Inventor | Storage to see the Flex Flash Storage Adapters.
Click Configure Operational Profile and then put a check next to the virtual drives you'd like to enable (i.e., the HV drive).
To install ESXi:
Click Launch The KVM from the CIMC.
In the KVM window, click Virtual Media.
Click Add and browse to where you've downloaded your Cisco Custom  ESXi .iso file and then put a checkmark next to it so it's mapped as the  Virtual CD/DVD.
Click back to the Monitor tab and then click Macros. Select the Ctrl-Alt-Del macro to reboot the server.
Press F6 as the server is rebooting to change the boot device to the Virtual CD/DVD.
Install ESXi as you normally would, but make sure to install it to the HV drive (not to the local drives).
When the install is complete, unmap the Virtual CD/DVD and reboot the server using the macro again.
Press F6 to change the boot device to the HV drive, and it should now boot to the familiar yellow and gray ESXi screen.

Shahzad

  • Linux 2.6 kernel VM problem on UCS SP with linux KVM

                       Hi,
IHAC who configured  3 service profiles running the Linux-KVM virtualisation solution (ubuntu serveur 12.04 LTS).
He migrated Linux VMs from HP servers running the same Linux-KVM version to the service profiles.
Everything is OK with all linux VMs running a kernel version 3 (Freebsd 9.0 ou Ubuntu 12.04).
All VMs with a linux kernel version 2.6 (Freebsd 9.0 ou Ubuntu 12.04) have network problem on the Service Profiles (but work OK as-it on HP servers).
These VMs can only ping the VMs on the same Srvice Profile and the Linux-KVM server they are tied to.
They cannot ping the VMs on other SPs or machines out of the UCS solution (arp resolution problem)
If the customer updates a such VM to a kernel version 3 it works fine.
Unfortunatly he cannot do this update for all the VMs he's got.
    Any idea ?

I assume since you mentioned 'SP', you are using Service Profiles and this is some UCS B-Series or C-Series integrated solution.  Advise your customer they are implementing unsupported OSes and most likely denied supported from TAC.

  • Problem with the new server UCS C220 for set IP to CIMC

    Hi
We’ve a problem with the new server UCS C220.
We bought two servers UCS C220 M3 for CallManager 8.6 with High Availability.
When we turn on the server during the boot and when it tells us, oppress F8 to enter at the CIMC and set the IP. But it never enters at the CIMC.
Then, we configure our DHCP server and our switch, we connect the three gigabyte ports to our switch to give him an IP to the CIMC, so and then can enter via browser, but neither works.
Note. The dedicated management NIC does not link, the other two ports do make link.
What do you suggest to put an IP to CIMC and start installing our applications?
    regards

You may have noticed that there is no DVD rom on the c220. What you need to do is:
Login into the CIMC from your browser
    Luanch the KVM
Insert the VMware DVD in your machines drive
On the KVM pop up there should be a tab to mount the drive, after mounting it click on Macros and choose ctrl_alt+delete to restart.
After the VMware OS installs press F2 to enter IP.
Browse to the VMware ip to download the Vsphere client
Open the Vsphere client, enter the ip of the vmware and the username will be root and no password if you did not set one.
You can now upload OVA templates or manually create virtua machine from this enviroment.
    Hope this help

  • Reset UCS C220 Root Password

Is there a way to reset the root password on a UCS C220 VMware ESXi Hypervisor? The instructions I found online apply to a C200 and they dont appear to work for this.
For those wondering we acquired the hardware through an acquisition and our server team had no use for it so I am going to try to create a lab for our group.
    Thanks

    Alex,
If what you want to do is to change the password of CIMC, then you need to restart the server, press F8 when you see the Cisco logo and then configure a new password (reason why you need to keep your servers away from ppl that can reboot your server and have access to it).
If by any chance you are looking to have the ESXi password changed, then you need to re-install the OS:
    http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1317898
"Reinstalling the ESXi host is the only supported way to reset a password on ESXi.  Any other method may lead to a host failure or an unsupported configuration due to the complex nature of the ESXi architecture. ESXi does not have a service console and as such traditional Linux methods of resetting a password, such as single-user mode do not apply. "

  • Migrating User from MCS 7828 H3 to UCS C220

            Hi All
I wanted to can someone tell me what is the process for migrating users from a MCS 7828 to a UCS C220. A associate of mine called me about doing a migration from the MCS to the UCS series and he wants to know how does he get the users over to the new platform. Thanks in advance for the help and have a great day.

    Hi Scooter817,
There are a few options depending on what the customer has today and what will be the end state.  Below are the most common scenarios:
1st Scenario - Customer is on older SW releases (8.x, 7.x, etc..) on MCS server(s) without UCSS wanting to move to new SW releases (9.x)  on UCS C220.    The most cost effective way is to buy $9 upgrade per user per application SKUs (ex. UPG-6K-ENH) with UCSS for 3 years.  There is more information on the BE6K product page under the partner section around migrations  BE6K Product Page - http://www.cisco.com/go/be6000
2nd Scenario - Customer is on older SW releases (8.x, 7.x, etc..) on MCS server(s) with UCSS wanting to move to new SW releases (9.x)  on UCS C220.    Since they have UCSS, they can go to PUT with thier contract number request updated SW and licensing, then re-host licenses to the new server.  PUT link: http://tools.cisco.com/gct/Upgrade/jsp/productUpgrade.jsp
3rd Scenario - Customer is on older SW releases (8.x) on MCS server(s) with or without UCSS wanting to move to same SW releases (8.x)  on UCS C220.   They can re-host licensing to the new server via SWIFT.  Here is the link to the process.  https://tools.cisco.com/SWIFT/LicensingUI/lookupLicenseForRehost

  • Cisco UCS C220-M3 Server doesn't boot after adding Intel I350 Quad Port NIC

    Hello,
We have purchased 2 Cisco UCS C220-M3 rack mounted servers (Single Processor) that have a dual port I350 LOM. We also purchased two Intel I350 Quad Port NICs to expand the available ports on each server from 2 to 6.
The problem we are facing is that the server will not complete the boot process unless we disable either the LOM or the Quad Port NIC. We have tried numerous settings in the BIOS area but we haven't managed to have them both working.
The I350 Quad Port NICs are from Intel and not from Cisco and we are running the latest FW/BIOS on the Servers as of March 10 2015.
We have followed the steps described in the installation guide to install them.
Could you provide some light in this situation please, what are our options?
P.S. Although the LOMs are I350, the MAC Address Vendor is Cisco, is it possible that Cisco servers accept only Cisco Branded Expansion Cards?
    Thank you,
    George

    Hi Shawn,
At least I'm not the only one having the same problem!
You are trying to use the cards with the LOMs enabled?
Which screen are you referring to in the first paragraph of your message?
Mine sits in BIOS POST for about 10 minutes and then resets itself....
We are also waiting for an answer from Cisco, so any findings/news will be posted here.
    Thanks,
    George

  • UCS C220 not recognizing LSI 9266 MegaRaid card

I just received a new UCS c220 with a seperate LSI 9266 MegaRaid card. I have installed the card adn connected the SAS cables and BBU.  When I start the server it doesn't recogize the card.  If go into CIMC the card is not listed.  I have changed the SAS cables and resetted them all several times. I have resetted the card several times.  I have not changed any of the settings yet so I may be missing something there that will make it recongize the card but I have followed all available instructions as well.  Any thoughts on what I could be missing?

Yes I have it installed in PCIe2 per the instructions.  It won't fit in PCIe1 anyway .  I have also looked up the LSI card specs to make sure I have the cables correctly attached.  See attached images for configuration in BIOS as Robert suggests and evidence of cabling and PCI location.
    Thanks for the assist.

What firmware are you running on this server?
Did you buy this raid controller direclty from cisco or from a partner.
Based on the screenshot you provided the firmware on your controller looks very old,  I recommend that you use the HUU to upgrade the firmware of the adapter to the same level as  your server. Use link below to download the firmware package for your server.

  • VMware ESXi on UCS C220 M3

    Hello,
I have two UCS C220 M3 servers that host CUCM, UCCX etc.
The servers were built with the standard VMware 5.1 U2 ISO (VMware-VMvisor-Installer-5.1.0.update02-1483097.x86_64.iso) rather than the Cisco custom ISO (ESXi-5.1.0-1483097-custom-Cisco-5.1.2.2.iso)
VMware ESXi seems to be working ok but I cannot install VMware tools on the virtual machines and guess that this might be because they were built with the standard ISO file.
When I run utils vmtools status on the CUCM VM I get a message stating:
The VMware Tools ISO is not mounted in the CD/DVD drive
Please ensure that you have selected Guest  -> Install\Upgrade VMware tools -> Interactive Tools Upgrade by right-clicking on the VM from your VI client
I guess the standard VMware image does not contain the tools ISO - is there any way to get around this short of trashing everything and starting again?
    thanks

    Hi James,
You still have to make VMware tools available to the guest.
ie. Using the VI Client, right click your CUCM VM, then select Guest  -> Install\Upgrade VMware tools -> Interactive Tools Upgrade
Then in the CUCM CLI, enter "utils vmtools upgrade"
    [It will reboot your node!]

  • Long beep sound in UCS C220 Server

    Hello All,
We have recently upgraded our CM server from MCS to UCS C220. All is working well since 3 weeks. However, since the past three days the UCS server is giving long beep sounds. In the CIMC console its showing as Severe Fault and in Storage Slot 1 and physical Drive 2, the status is "Foreign Configuration" and Health status is "Moderate Fault". However, when we check the status of the light on  the physical drive, its still green and not amber. So is it there a problem with the Harddrive?
    Pls find the screenshot attached.

Hey there. I don't think you'll get a reply on this forum because it looks like this is a fault on the UCS server itself, and not on the Unified Communication application that runs on the UCS server. Please re-post this discussion to the board which discusses UCS servers. You'll get a reply there.

Hi, I have the same issue, I just install a new clean CUCM 9.1 and CUC 9.1 in UCS C220 with pre-installed esxi 5.1, I leave the clients site the last Friday and today say to me that the servers is down, just turn on the server and everything comes back, in the vmware logs the only error that show is "2014-05-18T15:31:00.802Z [3DAE2B90 error 'SoapAdapter.HTTPService'] HTTP Transaction failed on stream TCP(error:Transport endpoint is not connected) with error N7Vmacore15SystemExceptionE(Connection reset by peer)" but I saw that error in the log before I installed this site the last May 5, anyone have a clue of what I have to look. Of if this error could do a crash or reset in the system.
    Thanks in advance.

    Udupi,
As Dan stated, it might be an issue with your RAID. In the past, I have experienced similar beeping when there was an issue with the RAID group. Except for the LSI controller, I'm not aware of any other componentt that would continuously beep on the server during operation
