Location, keywords and geotagging

I've read that many people don't recommend to use keywords for location, since the IPTC location fields are for that.
How do you people use that? The reasons I ask are two:
1) Adding a location, city, state/province and country in the ITPC fields means I have to type in all those four, whereas if I have those in a keyword hierarchy entering the location is enough as the parents are added automatically.
2) When exporting to Flickr, Smugmug etc., how do people find photos by location if there are no tags for location?
The other question is how you geotag your photos? Picasa for example has a way to open selected photos in Google Earth to set their location and save it to the metadata. Do I need to use an external application to set these coordinates?
Thanks!
/Daniel

Sverre, yes that's why I think entering location data to the IPTC fields require more work than I am ready to put into it (or I will get more and more behind with keywording my photos because of the time it takes...).
Dorin, that's great that Flickr automatically creates tags from some of the Location fields. Unfortunately Smugmug doesn't seem to do the same...
I'm thinking geotagging might be the way to go, that is using Google Earth to set the coordinates for the photo, as it then will show where on a map the photo was taken. Works with Smugmug for example, as well as PicasaWeb if Lightroom users use that (I do, since it's so easy for newbies to navigate galleries).
But that requires me to open the folder with the exported photos in Picasa and set the longitude and latitude in Google Earth from there. I guess there's no easier way to add those data from Lightroom?

  • How do I import Bridge keywords and metadata to CS6 from CS4 so that I don't lose them if CS4 is not

I have hundreds of keywords and metadata including Ratings and Labels using CS4 and Bridge CS4.
It is time to replace my PPC Mac with a new Intel Mac.
I am going to install CS6 on the new Intel Mac without installing CS4.
By default.... this eliminates ALL keywords and ratings and labels from my Bridge browser. The keywords will still be present on the files but Not present in Bridge keywords list and all ratings and labels will be lost.
Making a copy of Bridge CS4 metadata to another computer is quite simple.
Simply copy All of the Bridge CS4 application support folder to the other computer.
The question then becomes.... can I aslo do this with CS6 without introducing an incompatibility?
    1. incompatible due to CS6 application support.
    2. incompatible due to transfer from a PPC (APM) to Intel (GUID).
This concern results from an Bridge CS4 export problem I experienced.
Bridge CS4 will export all of your keywords and you can import them from a text file but it has some odd troubles. (try it and you will see)
This does Not mean that CS6 has the same troubles.
What do I require to preserve existing metedata and keywords that exist on a PPC using CS4 and import them into CS6 using Intel?
    Sound simple?
    I doubt it.
    The points are.
    1. CS4 not installed.
    2. CS4 source is PPC not Intel.
    3. Ratings and Labels are metadata that Are Not part of the file metadata and unique to Bridge only.
    4. Keyword Search and keyword Use requires that Bridge have keyword list, otherwise Finder is the far more useful browser and the new version of Bridge will require hours of keyword listing.
I don't want to spends hours retyping keywords lists in Bridge.

Ratings are NOT placed into the file under CS4 Bridge and neither are
    Labels.
That depends on your file type and settings voor Camera Raw.
Like Curt stated usually metadata is written in to the file itself. Only Raw files can't be written to and by default they create a XMP file, also called Sidecar XMP files (and do have the same filename, only a different extension called .xmp). These files are also by default hidden in Bridge but If you use Bridge to move files they travel along with the original.
If you move or copy them using finder you have to be sure these XMP files are also copied with the originals to the new location.
Using the menu View / show hidden files should reveal the XMP files.
An other option for the Camera Raw prefs is to set metadata to the Camera Raw database instead of written to sidecar XMP files ( to my knowledge using sidecar files has been the default since about CS3).
Now here it becomes a bit tricky and I only can tell you my findings, not to be confused with true facts. (and mind you, it is at least 5 years ago I was on a PPC and not even remember which OSX 10 was able to work on it, I just present the acting of CS6 on an intel Mac Pro with OSX 10.7, but I don't believe the difference in location is that much)
Having written the Metadata to the Camera Raw Database your image settings get written to a file in the user library preferences folder called logically "Adobe Camera Raw Database". But also some info gets added to the Camera Raw Cache folder (User library / Caches/ Adobe Camera Raw) in a file called index.dat.
Also not having set metadata to xmp sidecars stores the ACR settings in a new .dat file with a unique number (not to be traced as a corresponding filename. And also the default maximum is set to 1 GB of space and when full the oldest files are overwritten with the new ones.
Personally I use converted DNG files that are capable of writing metadata to so all info and settings are in the file itself and I don't need to bother about central storage that can get lost. The downside is that changes to a DNG need to save the whole file instead of a small xmp file and probably reading cache takes more time then getting info from central storage but I like to be on the safe side and speed is not really needed to be nailed down to split seconds in my workflow.
Keywords are stored as a file in the Bridge preferences but Like Curt already stated exporting the old list first and then via the same route import again to CS6 should solve your problem and they will be back as persistent, otherwise the files in the content window show as italic and sadly enough have to be made persistent one by one with right click mouse menu, so that is not really an option for you.
Exporting the list does create a text file that can also be altered manually with a simple text app and as said, again be imported in newer versions as Curt described earlier.
Making a copy of Bridge CS4 metadata to another computer is quite simple.
Simply copy All of the Bridge CS4 application support folder to the other computer.
Well, in fact it is true to call copying this folders a simple task but replacing the existing new CS6 would not be my method. The biggest change for Bridge CS6 was the transition to 64 bit and I lack the knowledge for this but also cache format for thumbs and previews has been different for every version.
But if you have located the CS4 folder for Bridge in your PPC user library / application support / Adobe / Bridge CS4 you should find a file called 'Adobe Bridge Keywords.xml' and it is fairly safe to replace this CS4 version with the new CS6 version.
Also custom settings for the output module can be copied (however to my memory the option for custom settings in Output where introduced in CS5) and collections can be copied.
So for your keywords the copy option might work, rating and labeling for Raw files they will be read in CS6 if they are stored as XMP. ACR settings idem but CS6 ACR has a new (2012) conversion mode that has different settings that do not work with previous settings (unless you first choose to use the 2010 conversion as default Raw setting.
If it is in the Central Data Base I would start trying to replace the CS4 with the CS6 edition (after back up of existing CS6 version) and see what happens. If it works your out of trouble.
You can also open the Camera raw Database as a text file but there is a lot of data in. Maybe scripting would be able to reveal those data and transfer to XMP but you have to visit the dedicated Scripting forum for this.
And while you state to have not installed CS4 anymore it might be wise to reinstall it (but first make a proper back up of the previous mentioned folders and files to be on the save side.
This gives you the opportunity to export keywords properly and if needed you can use Show Items from subfolders option with filter and set preferences to XMP sidecar to refresh the rating and labels to those XMP files. Just an escape route that might not be as painstakingly as it looks at first sight, just use the options for Bridge to filter.

  • Exporting keywords and comments?

Is there a way to export keywords, or comments?
Basically my iPhoto library is getting too big and running slow, so what I want to do is move all of the "older" photos onto an external drive and be able to find the pics using a spotlight search, but not keeping them in iPhoto.
    Thanks,
    "D"

    Dana:
Spotlight can find keyworded images in an iPhoto library located on an external HD. One way to do what you want is what Lori suggested, copy your library to the external, open it and delete those photos you plan on keeping on the boot drive library. Then open your boot drive library and delete those that are in the external drive library. To make it easier you can create a new keyword for those destined to the external drive.
The paid version of iPhoto Library Manager will let you easily move between your multiple libraries and copy single or multiple files from one to another while keeping the keywords and other information intact. iPhoto Buddy is another application that lets you quickly change libraries but does not have the file copy capability. For best results turn off ownership on the external drive by selecting it, typing Command-I and then find the ownership part of the Info window where you can click on the "ignore ownership" checkbox.

  • Keywords and comments from Canon Zoom Browser EX

My digital camera is a Canon Power Shot S2 IS. Before buying PS Elements 6, I organized photos using the Canon-supplied software, Zoom Browser EX. Many of the photos have keywords and comments using the Zoom Browser formats.
Is it possible to get these keywords and comments attached to the photos once they are in PS Elements 6? Have any of you folks successfully done this? I've looked in the usual help locations, but so far I have not been able to do this. PhotoShop Elements does not seem to know how to look into the Zoombrowser metadata or thumbnail files that go with the Jpeg picture files in each folder.
    I use Windows XP.

    Dennis,
A quick Web search finds other people asking the same question. The various postings suggest that the Canon Zoombrowser probably stores keywords and captions in a properietary format, rather than in the industry standard metadata sections of the photos themselves (the "EXIF" data) that most other programs, including PSE 6, use. So you may be out of luck.

  • Altering the linkage between Keywords and sub keywords

I have a master folder that contains a series of folders with several thousand images, all with keywords. Things seem to work when I try a FIND, etc. However my old keyword structure needs to be fine tuned. I created a new structure and some of the old image keywords stored in the file metadata do find the corresponding keyword in the new structure. But some images bring in the old structure as a temporary/italicized entry into my new keyword structure. For example, I have an image with the keyword “Calumet”, that’s all I see when I look at the keyword list. My new keyword structure looks like:
    Location (keyword)-Houghton County(sub keyword)-Calumet(sub keyword)
When I select the image rather than turning on the check in new structure Bridge creates an image of the old structure:
    Locations (keyword)-Hghtn Cnty(sub keyword)-Calumet(sub keyword) in italics.
Other images with other keywords work but unfortunately there is a series of keywords that continue to bring in the old structure. I can’t visually see how Bridge knows that the image’s use of ‘Calumet’ was originally linked to Hghtn Cnty to Locations when I first added the keywords. I unfortunately assumed that all that was saved was the sub keyword ‘Calumet’ and that Bridge would search my new structure to find a match, “Calumet” to “Calumet”, wherever Calumet appears in the new list. Does anyone know how Bridge saves the links between sub keywords and keywords and how to change that link? I have several thousand images to alter or should I just stick with the old keyword structure?

Indexing is the key here as you probably have folders that have not been re-indexed under the new scheme.  The search works only on indexed folders, but don't believe it is automatically re-indexed just becasue you made changes.
My best guess is that you have to dump the cache and let it rebuild, and then re-index your folders.  You could test this by purging the cache for one problem folder (tools/cache/purge cache for xxx folder".  Visit the folder and let it rebuild then do a search on that folder to see it the search now works.
Rather than dumping the cache you can also try a Find starting at the 1st folder on your drive (it searches from start down directry tree) and check the box for "search non-indexed files" as this re-indexes everything it searches.  That is why it is so slow.
    Hope this solves the problem.

  • ORA-30648 - missing LOCATION keyword

    All,
I am attempting to import via datapump an exported file (2 tables) from our lab to our production database.
The job is submitted and fails within 15 seconds due to the following error:
ORA-31693: Table data object "MYDATA"."TABLE1" failed to load/unload and is being skipped due to error:
    ORA-30648: missing LOCATION keyword
This repeats for both tables selected for import.
The tables do NOT exist under the schema where they are being imported. I attempted to use both the "Entire file" option
and the "tables" option, selecting both tables that are in the file. Either option produces the same error.
I granted read and write to the user of the directory so it does not appear to be a missing location relative to the directory on the server.
    Ideas?
    Gerry

    All,
The issue IS related to having a dba_directories entry where a lower-case value is used and perhaps with a "-".
I successfully loaded the data by migrating it to a directory that was defined as upper-case (within the data movement options of the GRID).
The value is defined in dba_directories. Though permissions were granted to the user by enclosing double-quotes (") around the value I think there
is a problem when using lower-case values as directory names.
Anyway, dropping and re-creating the dba_directory entry as BACKUP-BACKUPS (formally lower-case) and re-granting resolved the issue.
    Thanks
    Gerry

  • Savings Keywords and GPS with RAW/JPEG mixture

I am going through my honeymoon photos that me and my wife took around 5k photos with needless to say a mixture of my RAW photos and her JPEG photos.  I am going through and geotagging and keywording all of them.  I would like to create an exportable file that she can have since she doesn't use LR. Is there anyway to do that for all of her JPEGs, my RAW (and jpeg duplicates of said RAWs) so she could import them all into say iPhoto or picassa?

I suppose if you knew how to program in SQL, you could create such a file. But other than that you would have to let LR write this information to XMP (in other words to the JPG files or to sidecar files for your RAWs) and see if your wife can make use of this information ... which brings up an interesting question, what is your wife going to do with that information? If she is going to make use of it in another photographic application, this may be all you need, an "exportable file" from LR would be no help in another photographic application.

  • How do you use keywords and info?

I'm new to iphoto and wondered what keywords and info are intended for.
How do other people use them?
    Thanks

I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums exensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 25k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
Keywording takes time to set up, there's no doubt about it. I use Keyword Manager as it's much more powerful than the inbuilt system, and adds the possibility of nested keywords. So, for instance, if I add John to a photo it also adds 'Family'. Now I can add many keywords to a pic quickly.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.
    Regards
    TD

  • What is the difference between Topic Keywords and Index File Keywords?

What is the difference between Topic Keywords and Index File Keywords? Any advantages to using one over the other? Do they appear differently in the generated index?
    RH9.0.2.271
    I'm using Webhelp

    Hi there
When you create a RoboHelp project you end up with many different ancillary files that are used to store different bits of information. Many of these files bear the name you assigned to the project at the time you created it. The index file has the project name and it ends with a .HHK file extension. (HHK meaning HTML Help Keywords)
Generally, unless you change RoboHelp's settings, you add keywords to this file and associate topics to the keywords via the Index pod. At the time you compile a CHM or generate other types of output, the file is consulted and the index is built.
As I said earlier, the default is to add keywords to the Index file until you configure RoboHelp to add the keywords to the topics themselves. Once you change this, any keyword added will become a META tag in the topic code. If your keyword is BOFFO, the META tag would look like this:
    <meta name="MS-HKWD" content="BOFFO" />
When the help is compiled or generated, the Index (.HHK) file is consulted as normal, but any topics containing keywords added in this manner are also added to the Index you end up with. From the appearance perspective, the end user woudn't know the difference or be able to tell. Heck, if all you ever did was interact with the Index pod, you, as an author wouldn't know either. Well, other than the fact that the icons appear differently.
Operationally, keywords added to the topics themselves may hold an advantage in that if you were to import these topics into other projects, the Index keywords would already be present.
    Hopefully this helps... Rick

I have the same problem on my iPhone4. It is obviously a bug in the software. Once it pops out I am locked out of my phone. I can't even begin to describe the frustration this causes. All that stuff about holding down the buttons is useless. the phone won't even shut off. I can take a screen shot like that or go to voice control. Even when I got to a wifi connection, I can't get on. This app blocks everything else. This is a serious bug and can have serious consequences. The only thing my phone would do is go to voice control and let me play iTunes or phone people. Some smart phone hey?
