Long running VI crashes about 30 days by Windows 7 bluescreen
Hi Everyone,
My background is as an Electrical Engineer with some programming experience, LV, C, VB etc, but nothing approaching a computer science type level of understanding.
I have a test system that contains two hardware cards, the PCI-6033E for analog input to read a thermocouple and the PCI-DIO-96 to toggle a cooling fan when a set temperature threshold is reached. There are up to 36 test stations that this program runs. Each station individually isn't complicated, but there are 36 of them.
The original VI has been around for quite some time. It was running on Windows XP and needed to be run on a Windows 7 PC. The VI was first written to use the traditional DAQ interface methods. For the drivers for the hardware to work on Windows 7 they needed to be upgraded to NI-DAQmx drivers. That meant a bit of recoding to implement the new style.
The VI and computers would run under XP for weeks on end without any trouble. The PC's nor VI was not routinely restarted. When the new version was placed on the Windows 7 PC's the VI would run for a period of time around 30 days and then a windows error box would pop up.
There are three of these same systems running this same hardware and same VI. Two of them had this error occur after 28 days and another was a few days after that.
Thinking that this could be a memory leak issue, the systems have been restarted and have been running while monitoring memory usage and there does not appear to be an increase in memory consumption over about a week's time.
I have attached the Desktop Execution Traces to this post also. I didn't see any perpetually increasing memory buffer sizes or anything. Though I do wonder what the trace means by the Handle: Entry, is that the memory location being addressed?
Also, being that this error takes about one month to occur, running repeated stress-test (noting if the duration between errors goes up or down with increases or decreases in program load) type of iterations is impractical.
Questions:
1) Does anyone know of any driver issues regarding the support of relatively old hardware with windows 7?
2) When using the Desktop Execution Trace toolkit I see Memory Allocate events, but no memory release events. Should I be expecting some type of release event to be logged?
3) What does the Handle: address mean in the trace log?
4) As mentioned above my expertise is more in the electronics and hardware arena rather than the details of memory management and Windows PC architecture. It seems to me a driver issues would likely cause an error to be thrown from windows itself rather than LabVIEW as is the case here. If there were a memory leak would that error come from LabVIEW or Windows?
5) To you, what does this evidence point to as being the problem? Bad driver, poor VI programming, other Windows 7 conflict?
6) Any advice in further tracking down this problem?
Thanks,
Brandon

In some cases Windows able to show in which *.sys driver an error occurred. This info should be also somewhere in saved minidump.
And also check Windows Event Logs - probably something happened shortly before Blue Screen.
That's kind of the problem. I looked at the "help" that was offered by windows at the time a bit, but I couldn't make any sense out of all the information that was there. There was a really long .xml file that unfortunately was mostly compuspeak to me. Some names and words were recognizable, but I couldn't get context so I didn't learn anything from it.
About the code itself. It is definitely not optimized in any shape or form. It appears to be hacked together by a lab engineer without much more than basic training in LabView. Kudos for them getting it to work when it was constructed, however now there is a problem. Unfortunately there wasn't time (budget) for a rewrite and cleanup so a quick swap of hardware related code was all that was done.
Did you ever run your new code on the XP machines?
Oddly, no. Not for any length of time. A simple functional verification was all that was done with the new code on XP. A long term run on XP will be done in the coming months.
We will need to know What version of LabVIEW as well as the DAQmx version. A simple screenshot from MAX>> Software would suffice. Is this occurring with a VI running in the IDE or a deployed executable?
The VI is running from an installer compiled from Labview 2010.
The MAX Screenshot:
Attaching your code would allow us to look for places the code could be optimized such as re-opening DAQmx Tasks or arrays built in loops (It Looks like you've got a few on a quad core machine and the compiler is loop expanding from the instances where a buffer keeps upping size by 4)
The trace has a number of memory resizes that increase the memory allocated by 8, up to a certain level, something like 804 or some number. This would occur many times and always stop incrementing at that same number 804 (or whatever it actually was). There would be a different handle for each of these sequences. The fact that it does not keep incrementing towards infinity makes me think this is not a big issue. In the trace log it is lines 1473 through 1572 and 1632 through 1731 for instance. That section of code is here:
Thank you all for being helpful on this one. I appreciate the time you have taken to offer advice and solutions. The top level VI is HILT36A.vi.

How to research a long running job from 3 days ago
Re: How to research a long running job from 3 days ago
Client called to say that a job that normally runs for 6 hours ran for 18 hours on 11/01. 11/01 was a Saturday, and end of month. The long running job writes to a log and I can from the log that that the problem started right around 10:43am. Every step
before 10:43 was taking the normal amount of time. Then at 10:43 a step that takes seconds hung for 12 hours. After 12 hours the step finished and the job completed successfully.
I looked at the SQL Log, Event Log, Job History (for all jobs). What else can I look at to try and resolve an issue that happened on 11/01/2014?It does execute an SSIS package.
Personally I feel this as kind of bug in SSIS package but I am not expert in SSIS so I would move it to SSIS forum. Please update your question giving complete information what SSIS package does.
Please mark this reply as answer if it solved your issue or vote as helpful if it helped so that other forum members can benefit from it

Ever since the systyem upgraded me to 3.6.6. I can not even run one eight hour day without firefoc either crashing or locking up which requires me use C/A/Deleate to close the program. I used to be able to run 8 to 12 windows at a time and NEVER lock up or crash with the older version. Is this problem being looked into and or being corrected. I use Firefox with Google and my system is XP Pro 32 bit. THIS IS REALLY making me MAD. My email is [email protected] and would appreciate a response to this ASAP. I have tried a couple of items from your help section and nothing works.

Windows Updates Causing CFMX7 and CF8 to no longer run.
My CFMX7 and CF8 developer's copy will no longer run on my
computer. The only thing I've done is install window's updates.
Now, every time I reboot, I have to restore to a date about 2 weeks
ago. Then it will run until I have to reboot again. Then I have to
restore again. I have no idea what to do about this. Any help would
be appreciated.
I have both CFMX7 and CF8 installed to run as stand alone
concurrent systems. CFMX7 is supposed to run on port 8500. CF8 is
set to run on 8501. And both DO run, but only when I restore after
reboots.
The only thing I can think of doing at this point is
uninstalling both CF servers and reinstalling them. This will be a
hastle, though, since I'll have to re-setup all my ODBC sources and
copy my wwwroot folders, hoping I don't forget anything else that
I'll have to reset in the adminstrators after I reinstall. This
would be my last choice of action, but I have to act soon as this
is interfering with my dev work with customers.
Anyone have any suggestions?Zy Forever wrote:
> Thanks Ian. Can you give me more information on this, or
tell me where to look to find it?
The exact location depends on what flavor of CF you have
installed,
server, multi-home, j2ee, etc.
But there are a collection that in CF 7 where all called
neo-xxx.xml. I
believe the xml file names are similar for CF 8.
If you copy the desired xml file from your old installation
into a new
installation and then restart the CF server all the settings
can be
restored.
If you are using enterprise or development license servers
you can also
achieve the above using the built in CAR (ColdFusion Archive)
feature of
the administrator. -
After installing the most recent iTunes update/version iTunes will no longer run on my PC (Windows 7). I receive multiple error windows with the Microsoft error code R6034. Microsoft's Help site states that this error occurs when a driver attempts to access the C++ library without a "Manifest". I do not know what a manifest is, but apparently any attempt to directly access the C++ library is not permitted. The site instructs the viewer to contact the application developer.

My MacPro 1.1 Keeps Crashing about 4-5 times a day
Can anyone give me an idea what to do.
My Mac Pro 1.1 12GB Ram connected to a 30 Cinema Dislpay keeps crashing about 4-5 times a day. I have a ATY, Radeon X1900 graphics card.
Not sure what to do?Normally I would say get rid of the X1900 if you plan to continue to use it.
You have been cleaning it every 3-4 months, as those cards are terrible on dust and heat.
Also get down to one good set of RAM or just pick up a 4GB kit 2x2 $25 from Amazon.
While at it, can't hurt and definitely a big plus to go with 250GB $139 Samsung EVO SSD.
Got a good older clone? should. Every freeze and crash is likely contributing to more corruption of ifles and directory making it worse. So good idea to start with new RAM, newly formatted drive, clean install of system. -
Since updating to LR5.5 it crashes about every 5-10 images while working in the development module. Computer is PC Windows 7 Home Premium. I have been using this computer for several years with zero problems. Is this related to the updating? What is the fix?
Do you get an error message? If so, what does it say?
Do you get a Blue Screen?
Does something else happen? -

Regards,Hi,
I suggest that you look at this line in particular:
TRUNC(((fcr.actual_completion_date-fcr.actual_start_date)/(1/30))*6) > NVL('&days',5)and consider whether it is asking the question that you want it to ask.
Furthermore, it looks like you are expecting to get time in minute from the following line, and this definitely does not return minutes:
TRUNC(((fcr.actual_completion_date-fcr.actual_start_date)/(1/24))*60) I recommend finding one or two IDs for concurrent requests that you know are running for a long time, comparing the start and end times, testing that information against the output of the above functions, and adjusting your query accordingly.

John P.

Does a long running process survive a server crash
Hi, I assume the bpel dehydration means that a long running process can survive a server crash, but I'd like some expert to confirm this.
Suppose I have a long running process which is in an infinite loop to keep invoking a web service. In the middle of it, the server is either stopped or crashed. When the server comes back, will the process continue from where it was left?
Thanks.Yes. Your understanding is correct. Give it a try. After restart, go to the BPEL console and click under the processes tab on the "Run Recovery Agent" link. -Edwin

Last week Firefox began "crashing" about once a day. Today it started not responding about 5 minutes after I sign in, no matter what site I am on. My son could not do any school work (online program) because it kept freezing. My computer is protected from malware and viruses (supposedly) I've downloaded the latest version of Firefox and ran a scan, nothing shows up. Please help. Thanks!

Last night I downloaded the latest Word update. Today the first Word document crashed and I lost 45 minutes of work in spite of having saved the document numerous times. Why is Word crashing the day after a safety update? I have Office 2008 for Mac
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
/private/var/run/StartupItems

Open Console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem & next startup for clues. -
Query on long running client import process
Hi Gurus,
I have few queries regarding the parameter PHYS_MEMSIZE. Let me brief about the SAP server configuration before I get into the actual problem.
We are running on ECC 6.0 on windows 2003, SP2 - 64 bit and DB is SQL 2005 with 16GB RAM and page file configured 22 GB.
As per the Zero Administration Memory management I have learnt as a rule of thumb, use SAP/DB = 70/30 and set the parameter PHYS_MEMSIZE to approximately 70% of the installed main memory. Please suggest should I change the parameter as described in zero administration memory guide? If so what are the precautions we should take care for changing memory parameters. Are there any major dependencies and known issues associated to this parameter?
Current PHYS_MEMSIZE parameter set to 512 MB.
Few days ago we had to perform the client copy using EXPORT / IMPORT method. Export process was normal and went well However the import process took almost 15 HRs to complete. Any clues what could be the possible reasons for long running client copy activity in SQL environment. I am suspecting the parameter PHY_MEMSIZE was configured to 512 MB which appears to be very low.
Please share your ideas and suggestions on this incase if anyone have ever experienced this sort of issue because we are going to perform a client copy again in next 10 days so i really need your inputs on this.
Thanks & Regards,
Vinod
Edited by: vinod kumar on Dec 5, 2009 9:24 AMHi Nagendra,
Thanks for your quick response.
Our production environment is running on ACtive/Active clustering like One central Instance and Dialog Instance. Database size is 116 GB with 1 data file and log file is 4.5 Gb which are shared in cluster.
As suggested by you if I need to modify the PHYS_MEMSIZE to 11 or 12 GB(70% of physical RAM). What are the precautions should I consider and I see there are many dependencies associated with this parameter as per the documentation of this parameter.
The standard values of the following parameters are calculated
According to PHYS_MEMSIZE
em/initial_size_MB = PHYS_MEMSIZE (extension by PHYS_MEMSIZE / 2)
rdisp/ROLL_SHM
rdisp/ROLL_MAXFS
rdisp/PG_SHM
rdisp/PG_MAXFS
Should I make the changes to both Central and dialog instance as well. Please clarify me,. Also are there any other parameters should i enhance or adjust to speedup the client copy process.
Many Thanks...

Iphoto CONSTANTLY crashes - about 1x an hour
Hi all,
Without fail, everytime I use iPhoto it will crash about 1 time an hour. This has been happening since I got my laptop, about 6 mths ago. Over the course of the past 2 days, I think it crashed 8-9 times during about 8 hrs of photo editing. I'm not even doing anything "fancy"... I'm simply cropping, straightening, adjusting some colors, etc. I will be working on it, and it will simply just "crash" and quit. After a few moments it will give me a message saying something like: "iPhoto quit unexpectantly and do I want to submit a report to Apple." I have sent Apple all of these reports in the hopes that they'll fix this problem in future revisions (as well as a few choice comments!)
I've done all my due diligence in trying to fix this problem myself, and you're my last hope.
Sometimes after a crash, iPhoto will simply boot up as normal. Other times, it'll suggest that I either rebuilt or repair my library. I've repaired & rebuilt my library at least 4x over the course of all the crashes. In fact, I'm writing this email now as iPhoto is repairing my library due to yet another crash.
There's a few threads on this forum that have iPhoto issues and I've read them and have tried fixing it using your suggestions but no luck. Just yesterday I went thru the each of the "iPhoto Library First Aid" steps. I Repaired Permissions, then after that was done, Repaired Library, and finally Rebuilt Library. Sure enough that didn't fix it. It crashed again after working on it for an hour or so.
I've brought it to the Apple store 3x and the geniuses never seem to live up to their name. Once the "genius" told me iPhoto could only handle about 10K worth of pics (which I thought was a ridiculously low # - i verified thru this website that indeed that # is far too low). During those visits, all they've done is repair and rebuilt my library. They also uninstalled and reinstalled iPhoto. None of that worked.
I highly doubt it's a virus as I don't download anything on this laptop. I've only installed 4 programs all from verified sources (Apple and Microsft websites). As the laptop is pretty new, all the data I have on it is photos and MP3s I've transferred over from my previous laptop (which worked fine but was old).
I'm using a MacBook Pro on OSX 10.8.2 and iPhoto '11 9.4.2. I have about 9,500 photos.
Sorry if this is kind of long, but i wanted to make sure you have all the info necessary to diagnose my problem.
I know I should include the first 50 or so lines of my last crash report but I dont know how to get that info. Please help me! It really is driving me nuts, and ******* me off to no end.
Thanks!Hi Larry, I timed how long it took from starting up iPhoto till the crash, and it was 23 min. I'm not sure if the crashes are happening more quickly or if I always just assumed it was about an hour (I think it's the latter). After the crash, when I restarted iPhoto, it did not suggest a repair or rebuild of the library.
Below is the report. I copied the whole thing but am only posting a portion of it. If you need the full report, let me know. Thanks for looking into this.

ITunes crashes about a minute after launch
iTunes has been crashing about 1-2 minutes after launch consistently for the past several days. This has occurred both before and after the recent Mavericks update (10.9.4) and regardless of rebooting my machine, reducing the type and number of other applications running, etc. So far I have tried the following:
Deleting iTunes .plist files
Reinstalling iTunes
Checking Apple Hardware Test for bad memory (I never could get this to run, either from my regular boot disc or from a bootable Mavericks USB)
Assuming I don't have a physical memory issue that inexplicably only impacts iTunes, what am I missing? I'm including the crash dump below. Apologies for length.

☞ Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Please let me know what the solution is.Matt,
A namesake of yours is my client for this issue.
Coming to the problem, the customer says there is proxy configured between HTTP server and WebSphere. This proxy server times out for long running reports. If the HTTPServer is bypassed, things work fine.
A colleague of mine opened a case with BOBJ. I can get you the case# if you need it. We got this reply:

Hi Matt,
I was away for the last two days, so I couldn't reply to you sooner.
Extending the timeout setting from Webi and Infoview in BOXI R2 will not
make the long running reports work as your proxy setting at the lower
layer than BOXI just allows 5 minutes and after that the connection will
be cancelled by the proxy. I'm not sure why this setting was effective
for https only or timeout out after 2 min. This is out of scope of BOXI
R2 and your network admin would be the best person to handle. You were
getting 502 error in Java Report Panel. I googled with "502 error and
ProxyTimeout", and I got the some articles returned which say when
backend doesn't answer on requests(because it timed out), it returns to
a client an error 502.
I'll close this thread as the n/w admin at the client are working things out.
Thanks for your support.
