Mac FREEZES constantly and screen is distorted!!! HELP.

It's getting to the point where I can't use it anymore! GRR!! I have to restart it manually at least 4-5 times to get it to work for a few minutes before it freezes again. It's a brand new computer, what is going on! THIS IS NOT A PC, WHY IS THIS HAPPENING! HELP! I've work to do. I must solve this soon.
ty

I don't have the screen issue, but I have had CONSTANT freezes all day. I had not been logged off overnight, and had no problems or installs between yesterday and today, yet today I'm having odd freezes. They last from 30 seconds to 1 or 2 minutes, and then the system seems to catch up. I too need to get work done!! I was told to do an "archive and install" by apple support, but also warned to back up first... though chances are slim that data would be damaged.
What I tried before calling support:
- software update
- reboot
- ran disk utility
- ran disk utility from install dvd
- install and run tech tool pro which came with my apple support, yet does not fully support the system I had purchased -- how handy!! A special thanks to Apple for that.
I have not yet taken support's advice and done the archive and install. I'm waiting to see if there are more obvious patterns in the problem.
I also have a G4 powerbook, and that does not seem to have the same issues.
So Mikey09: have you tried waiting a minute or three before restarting to see if we have a similar issues?

I have to go into Firefox and actually quit the application to continue. Any help is very much appreciated.

are you backing up files, or doing a Time machine backup, either way, the Time machine will STOP when finished and show "last backup at XXXXXX"  meaning its done...... OR if when transferring files, it will show a progress bar on your desktop and vanish when files are copied.
Open up the Hitachi drive (your G drive is made by Hitachi, and the best made by the way).....and see if the files are there.
a MORE VISUAL way is to open the hard drive file, and drag and drop files INTO the Gdrive and you can see them visually be copied there as you do it.
To see your HD on your desktop GOTO  FINDER......PREFERENCES....then GENERAL TAB.........check the box marked HARD DRIVES.........then your Gdrive will appear on your desktop........open it from there,  and DRAG and drop files from anywhere INTO the Gdrive....... easy visual way to see the files being copied into the Gdrive.

  • Brand new iMac freezes constantly! Updates aren't helping!

    Hello everyone,
This past Sunday I bought a brand new iMac intel Core 2 Duo with a 250 GB HDD and 1 GB of RAM. At home I set it up with my SAMSUNG 1080p 22" monitor, Apple bluetooth Keyboard and mightymouse, and a Western Digital 350 GB HDD hooked up via USB. I was excited to finally jump on the intel-based Mac bandwagon, as well as experience dual monitors for the first time.
That was Sunday. Tuesday evening I was watching "Rome" on itunes on my Samsung monitor while surfing the web with Omniweb on the iMac monitor. All of sudden, everything locked up. I was able to move my cursor, but nothing responeded to my clicking. I hard booted the system and loaded everything I had going again, and sure enough, it locked up a few moments later. I ran system update, updated everything, then restarted. Time went by and although not immediatly, later that night it froze up on me again.
Fast forward to last nite, and the freezing reached and all time high. 5 times. Each time was when I had a browser open in my iMac window and I had Quicktime playing in my Samsung monitor. I was watching a sports program, with the player fit to the screen.
I have read many posts about intel iMacs freezing late last year, but there was a firmware update that evidently fixed that. I have this update installed, and I have had no luck. I have even contacted Apple Care via phone where I got instructed to unplug everything, plug it back in, start in safe mode, and delete cache. That didn't help me out at all. Am I right insuspecting I have a faulty Video card? I just ordered 4GB of RAM, could this be a RAM issue?

When diagnostics are run on a freezing computer and nothing shows, I'll put the program into a testing loop because this means one of two things: the issue is heat related so running the diagnostics several more times will bring on the heat so that the issue shows up or the installed RAM is marginal, just flaky enough to show up now and again but not so far off that a run through of the memory test catches it on the first run.
As I said in my original post, memory is always a suspect in a freezing or kernel panicking computer. And it does tend to top my list. But from what you describe I'm not quite willing to say, "Why don't you just wait until the RAM upgrade arrives?"

  • My Ipod classic freezes itunes and wont work anymore. help please

I also had this problem last week.  in the meantime,  I have upgraded Itunes in Maverick.  when i connected this am -  it took about 15 minutes for the connected iPod to show in itunes with message " ITunes cannot read the information on this IPod"   there was an "OK" button underneath the message.   select OK.   the iPod will show as empty onscreen and a prompt to reset to factory settings.   I reset to factory settings - ejected iPod - restarted computer - connected iPod - ITunes then treated my iPod as "new" - for setup.  now after sync - ALL IS FINE AGAIN...

  • Mac Freezes on Blue Screen After Installing Updates! Help!

    hi
Have just done the updates that were available for my wifes mac mini. All went well and it said restart to complete. I did this but when it restarted it would not get past the blue screen, the mouse cursor is there and moving but thats all.
Now my problm is i haven't got a clue about mac's, the wife is away and don't want to tell her that i've managed to trash her Mac as she has got quite a bit on there. If it was windows it would be fine as am happy with that but it isn't and i am stuck!!!!!(read dead if i can't sort it out before she gets back!!)
Now what i want to know is how can i basically get it back to where it was before installing the updtaes or can i get back to a state of working without deleting anything progs installed etc? With windows you can use there system restore after booting in safe mode. Is there a way i can do it with the mac or something along those lines.
i know this is probably a pain post but i am stuck
Cheers in advance for any help
Mac Mini 1.66GHZ INTEL Dual Core   Mac OS X (10.0.x)

The only way to get back to a state before the updates is if a backup was made.
As for booting in safe mode, you can try holding the shift key.
If that works, it says that some attached peripheral needs an updated driver. Remove all third party peripherals, and see if it boots.
If It doesn't boot, it is likely the directory is damaged, or the hard drive is very full, or the hard drive might be dying. You can also try zapping the PRAM:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
Unfortunately there is no way to tell the difference between the above possibilities, and if you use a directory repair utility on a dying hard drive, it may speed its death. How valuable is her data to her, and is it backed up anywhere?

  • Mac freezes, shows grey screen then starts back up

For the past two weeks I have had the issue of my iMac suddenly freezing for a few seconds and then it turns to a grey screen for a few more seconds before it starts back up on my user area.
All programs get shut down (which is annoying as I do graphic design so I'm usually on PS or AI and lose work I've done since last save). Programs which are set to start up automatically upon login do not start up. Thankfully firefox will start back up when I click it and continue from all the tabs I had open.
I cannot seem to find a source for this to be happening... The programs which are always running when this has happened previously are: Mac Mail, finder, Messages, Spotify, Wacom Desktop Center. This morning it happened when none of my adobe programs were running.
Has anyone had the same issue or knows what's up?
I tried to go to apple support but it said I need to pay £35 for someone to answer my question.

  • Imac freezing up and screen dissolve issues

    Hi all,
My imac intel keeps freezing up for no reason and then won't let you force quit anything.
It still seems to do things in the background like import cds to itunes and download items.
Sometimes it also freezes and then the screen slowly dissolves to bright white and then restarts itself.
Has anyone come across this before.
The imac is about 6 years old.
    Thanks in advance.

If your Mac ame with an Install Sisc, AHT hw test should be on one of them.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

  • Firefox Crashing/Freezing Constantly and Resetting to Defaults

For the past few weeks, I have been having a lot of issues with Firefox crashing. Every time I try to open up a new tab or load a web page it will freeze. Sometimes this is only for a few minutes, while other times this lasts up to an hour and I have no choice but to close the program out using the task manager, as any attempts to close it normally fail. This is most prevalent within the first few minutes after I launch Firefox, and the program has been slow in this regard for quite a while, though usable after waiting a few minutes for it to fully load. As I stated though, for the past few weeks it has been completely locking up and crashing when this happens, and it continues to happen after I have already loaded web pages and try to open new ones.
I tried a complete fresh install, and the problem was fixed for a few days, however, after going for a couple of days without internet access and trying to get online again, the problem returned even worse than before. More than that, now from time to time my Firefox completely resets to default settings, clearing out my "New Tab" page's pinned tabs, as well as removing whichever theme I had applied.
This glitch has rapidly made Firefox unusable for me, which makes me very upset as I far prefer it to Google Chrome. While I don't know that it would help discern the issue, below is also a list of all the extensions I have installed as well as the plugins I have that are always active, (with all my other plugins either being disabled or "ask to activate"). With the exception of "Adblock Edge", I have had all the extensions installed for several months with no issues. "Adblock Edge" itself I only installed after uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox to try and fix my issue. My current Firefox version is 35.
    Extensions:
    Adblock Edge 2.1.7
    DownloadHelper 4.9.24
    Private Tab 0.1.7.3
    Adblock Plus 2.6.7
    Plug Ins:
    Shockwave Flash 16.0.0.296
    Unity Player 4.6.1.51269

  • Macbook Pro is slow, freezes constantly and I'm forced to hold down the power button to turn it off.

    Hey all,
This is my first post/discussion so hopefully I'm posting in the right section and all. Anyway, as of recently (few days) my Macbook Pro 15" (model previous to the one just released) has been been slow + lagging, also when this happens my computer freezes, but its kind of different: I can still move the cursor around and stuff, but for instance, if its google chrome that freezes I won't be able to close it, (tried force quit), after this, my whole computer kinda freezes and I can't close any of my programs, I can't click on the menu's at the top to shut down or doing anything really, eg. change internet connections. Closing my macbook, like shutting the lid doesn't solve anything, only turning it off by holding the power button for a few seconds, which I'm almost certain isn't a good thing. I've had to do this like 3 times today and its getting pretty frustrating.
Something tells me that it might be because of memory usage, but I'm not entirely sure, I only say this because when looking at the available/free memory using iStat sometimes, its really low, like 12mb, 30mb, etc.
Anyway, I know that's quite a lot of infomration but hopefully its useful, if there's any additional information you require that may be of help to you, please tell me and I'll do my best to provide it.
    Thanks,
    Roshen.

    Roshen,
There are a couple of things you can try, but it sounds to me as if it's a problem with your hard drive.
First, open Activity Monitor in your Utilities folder and see how much of your CPU % is being used by any one application (you can sort by %). If any one application/process is taking up more than 15% or so of your CPU, try killing (quitting) the process.
Second, since yours is a 2011 model, it will have come with Lion installed. Shut down your machine and boot up while holding down the Command and R keys. Open Disk Utility and verify your disk. If it comes up with errors, click repair.
If neither of these work, take your MBP into your local Apple Store. You should still be under warranty, even if you didn't purchase AppleCare. All beforehand and make an appointment.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Slow to connect to Mac share - file and screen

I have a few Macs on a network, with wired and wireless connections. I'm finding that I can connect to some of the machines quite quickly - from time that I click on the machine in the Shared area of the sidebar to when I see disks appear, or from when I click on screen sharing to something appearing, is fast. This is true for a PowerPC Mini running 10.5.x - takes 1 second for disks to appear.
At the same time, I have a MacBook Pro, 2.8 GHz, running 10.6.6, where it takes as much as 15 seconds for disks to appear or screen sharing to start. This happens with wired or wireless connections to the machine - I can be wired through a gigabit switch between that machine and another fast machine and still takes 10-15 seconds. This has been occurring for some time, and was present before and after the 10.6.6 patch.
Once I am copying data between machines, things seem to run quickly. So it seems mostly to be at the initial connection. If I go to sleep on a machine that is already connected to this MBP, wake up, then click on the MBP again, even though have mounted shares it still took 15 seconds to re-display the shares.
Any idea how I might diagnose and fix this?
    Thanks,
    Alex

There is no external drive on this machine - and I verified that the disk is awake. Not the issue.
The wired test was done between Macs on the same gigabit ether switch.
Another clue - I've found that when playing Starcraft 2 on this machine, this machine is the last to load vs others in multiplayer. I'm playing side by side with another machine on an older MacBook Pro, slightly slower, and that one always loads faster.

  • My Mac is constantly adding screen shots to my hard drive

I have discovered that my Mac running OS X v. 10.7.3 is storing a screenshot about every 5 minutes while the computer is actively used.  I cannot find anything in the Activity Monitor that looks out of place.  Why is my computer doing this?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” (without the quotes) and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Every video streaming site (except youtube) freezes constantly and I cannot update flash

This problem started randomly happening around two days ago.  I don't know what changed but the last time I tried to watch a stream on twitch.tv the player kept freezing even on the very lowest quality setting.  Everything worked just fine on a different computer and twitch works well on my PS4 (which is wireless no less) browser and the xbox app.  I also tried watching something in vimeo and it would play the video for a few seconds, skip to another video and repeat.  First thing I tried was deleting my cache and cookies etc. with the program ccleaner.  Second thing I tried was uninstalling and reinstalling flash player but when I try I always get "lost connection trying to reconnect" at around 40% into the download.  So the next thing I tried was using a different cat5 cable, using a different port on my router (again, everything else works fine) but no luck.  I've also tried downloading the flash installer from IE and Chrome  After that I tried doing a clean install of flash as instructed here How do I do a clean install of Flash Player?
I've also tried doing the direct download link but it's still the same issue.
    http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/support/install_flash_player.exe
I am officially running out of things to try next.  If anyone could help I would much appreciate it.  I am running on Windows 7 64-bit and my browser of choice is Firefox.  Need any other info, please ask.

Won't make a difference.  It has to be something on my end because my antivirus hasn't updated in two days.  Tried doing a manual update but it kept starting over near the end.  So I'm running a virus scan in safe mode and if that doesn't work then the internet port on my motherboard is probably going bad.  Still doesn't explain youtube.
