Mac Pro refuses to establish a vpn connection

Hello out there...
I have a 6 month old Mac Pro. Unfortunately this computer refuses to establish a reliable vpn connection to my office. All the other gear I have (powerBook, iPad and iPhone) does it.
The Mac Pro is erratic. Sometimes he connects but then all of a sudden after two or three minutes the vpn connection is beeing closed. The other day it works for hours....
He did so before the system upgrade and does it now after the upgrade to 10.6.8
I am realy desperate to get a solution for that....
All the best
Peter

Hi Kris,
The ASA supports different kinds of VPN, i.e. SSL (aka SVC for Ssl Vpn Client), IPsec or L2TP/IPsec.
For IPsec it suports both IKEv1 and IKEv2 (as of version 8.4).
On the client side,
the legacy Cisco VPN client uses  IPsec with IKEv1.
Anyconnect 2.x uses SSL.
Anyconnect 3.x can use either SSL or IPsec/IKEv2.
So the Cisco clients do not use L2TP, but L2TP functionality is built-in in some OS's, like Windows and Android.
Personally I have not had the opportunity yet to lay my hands on an Android device to try this out, so I hope Michael or the people in the other thread can help you out if you need more details.
As to what's different, that's a short question with a long answer
One important difference between SSL and IPsec is that at some places IPsec may not work because the network provider blocks UDP500, while SSL uses TCP443 which is usually not blocked because it's the standard port for HTTPS.
Another one is that for Anyconnect, you need a license on the ASA (it does include a free license for 2 concurrent users).
Just a few pointers:
And probably Wikipedia is a good place to start reading as well if you want the full picture

  • Why can't I establish a VPN connection using my iPhone 4's personal hotspot?

    Hello everybody,
I want to access our company's network with my Mac Book Pro using my iPhone 4's 3G connection, but unfortunately it simply won't work. Here is what I can do:
    - I can establish a VPN connection from my MacBook Pro using my home (or some other) WiFi and access the company network.
    - I can establish a VPN connection on my iPhone 4 using 3G and access the company network on my iPhone 4.
    - I can use my iPhone 4's personal hotspot (sharing its 3G connection) with my MacBook Pro and surf the Web.
    what I can't do is:
    - establish a VPN connection on my MacBook Pro when connected to the internet via the iPhone's personal hotspot. (connection times out)
    - access the company's network on my MacBook Pro using the personal hotspot, when the iPhone's VPN connection is ON.
The VPN is an encrypted PPTP connection, with username and password.
Is this a known issue, and, if so, is there any way to solve this?
    Thanks in advance!
    Cheers
    Diego

  • Cannot establish a VPN connection in Lion

I have followed the instructions in this support article but cannot create a VPN connection:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/9010.html
I've tried the steps outlined in this article, and successfully completed everything but still cannot create a VPN connection:
    http://anders.com/guides/native-cisco-vpn-on-mac-os-x/
I have all the correct credentials for my VPN network (vpn address, group name, shared secret). I always receive a server time out error.
I am able to successfully connect to my work VPN using the Cisco VPNClient. But unfortunately it only runs in 32-bit mode. I prefer to boot in 64-bit mode and would prefer not to reboot everytime I want to establish a VPN connection.
I have been working on this issues for three days straight and am getting nowhere. My work is an unsupported IT environment, and the IT support subscription service we use will not handle any Mac issues.

Hmm, no changes. Still the same issue. I deleted the files described, rebooted and reconfigured the network.
hmm, Finder still remembers his old server connection settings, maybe i should delete those, too. Any idea where finder stores his server connections?
In my perception the message that no secure connection can be established comes up immediately after sending the connect command. I don't think that there is network traffic, there is no noticeable latency...

  • I am unable to establish a VPN connection. My certificates are installed, but I receive error : ssl_error_bad_mac_read

I just bought a new IBook Pro to replace an old unit.
I assume you mean a new MacBook Pro correct? From Apple, a brand new machine, not a recently bought older model Mac?
    I loaded Microsoft 2008 office.
Some reports of issues "fresh installing" Office 2008 on a Lion (OS X 10.7) equipped Mac (all new ones have this)
    http://roaringapps.com/app:2533
    I am getting an error
“Unable to establish a secure connection to pop-sbc.mail.am0.yahoodns.net because the correct root certificate is not established”
Could be a issue with yahoo, or your ISP, or your new machine.
I would try again later and see if the issue clears itself up. Make sure your computer is updated via Software Update, this should give you the updated root system certificates.
Also head over to Keycahin Access>Preferences then Certificates and set Best Attempt, Best Attempt and Require Both for the three settings. This will make sure your certificates are well checked before using.
If your using a older machine, like 10.5, then there are no longer any root certificate updates from Apple.
I have all the same settings as my old Mac which worked fine but the new computer is giving me this error.
So it works fine on the older machine and not the newer.
Well it could be that becaue you installed Office 2008 (same license) on another machine that there are security issues at play to prevent a cloned machine from intercepting emails.

  • Mac Pro kernel Panic with Cisco VPN Client

After Having to rebuild my new Mac Pro 3 times I finally found that it was the Cisco VPN Client that was released for Intel in Feb. of this year that does not play nice with the new machines. Don't install or if it's too late boot into Safe Boot mode by holding your shift key during startup and then follow the instructions at the link below.
    http://itinfo.mit.edu/answer.php?id=8171

    Just a heads-up;
the new Cisco VPN Client has now been released and fixes this issue.
The version 4.9.01.0030 specifically resolves the following bugs:
CSCsd51113 feature unity nonwindows set mtu vpnclient.ini field
CSCsd51126 unity mac ppp intel fails with mismatch log message 10.4
CSCsc56445 unity mac rebranding volume name voids rebranding files
CSCsf19841 unity mac does not support 64 bit mac pro platform

  • Occassions where Mac Pro refuses to Shut Down/Restart

I have a Quad 2.8 Mac Pro (Early 2008) and have been frequently running into a problem where both Leopard (and now Snow Leopard) refuse to close my programs and shut my computer down when I ask it to.
This started roughly 4 months ago and started as just a minor nuisance. Since I use Boot Camp and run two operating systems I tend to restart often. I also always shut my machine down when I go to bed.
When I click shut down or restart the window for the logout countdown shows up. I go ahead and click to have it do it instantly and the machine will just sit there. Usually it will come up with an error saying a application refused to be shut down. What's odd is it is usually a program I don't even have open anymore. I can force quit every application I have open and it will still sit there.
Anyone seen this before? I don't even know where to begin.

Check on Activity Monitor if there is a process that is hanged or something... there is got to be a process that is not responding to the kill signal and you might have to force it to die for the shutdown to end...
once you find what process is hanging you can start working out why is it not closing and fix that problem...

  • New Mac Pro: What are You using to connect your eSATA external drives to you nMacPro?

    Hi,
I have some eSATA external HDs that I would like to use with my 2013 New Mac Pro.
I was just wondering what other  have been using to connect their nMPs to eSATA devices and how well it has worked.  I have seen a USB3 to eSATA cable from NewEgg.... which seems like a good idea ... if it will work.
    Thanks!

LaCie TB HUB has two TB ports which is good for daisy chain. Has two esata ports also. I connect a Voyager bought from OWC to one sata port and that's where my bare 2.5 and 3.5 hard drives reside when I need them. The other sta port has a Pioneer 207 blu ray drive. When I sleep my 2013 Mac Pro I turn off the power to the Voyager and the Pioneer. All work flawlessly.

  • Mac pro left USB port can't connect to iPad

    Hi,
I just got my new Mac Pro days ago and I really love this new gift, except that when I plug in my ipad air to the left USB port, it gets connected then disconnect instantly after a few seconds, then detected... This happnes over and over. I tried different cables, it sill doesn't work. But for my iphone 4, which requires a different kind of calbe, it works fine. I think it is the problem with my Mac.
Does anyone have the same problem? Can I change my Mac with a new one? Thanks!

  • Mac Pro refuses to boot after new drive instalation...

    Hi
Could anyone shed a bit of light on my problem - Ive just got a new 500gb seagate drive, - when I load it up in order to format, im faced with a blank screen, and os x refuses to even think about booting up - there is also an odd click which Im guessing is the boot drive trying to start.
The new drive slots into place fine, and I made sure I was earthed out before touching it...
When the new drive is taken out, the system starts up without a hitch.
Do I have a duff drive? - or am I missing something blindingly obvious?
    Thanks for any help
    Maxine.

    Hi,
Funny that I saw this message, I am the person that had the exact same problem on the 20th of December.
After trying to install the HD, I had the problem as well. I ended up taking the computer in to my local Apple store, and they kept the Mac Pro.
It is now January 5th and I still do not have the system. Called them an hour ago and they said that the part (they didn't mention what it was) was on BACKORDER, so they had to decide if they were going to wait for the part or give me a brand new system. Hmmmm.... Could this be a NEW hidden problem for the Mac Pro now?
I wanted to purchase an iMac, but was afraid of the lock-up issues. I am starting to regreat my choice and wish I had got an iMac, at least I would have some kind of file server for my network
All I can suggest is to take it in to your local Apple store and let them check it, and then ask if they could fix it right then, or you two could have a system that's not able to be workable.

  • MAC: Uml290 & vzw access manager, IPSec VPN connections don't work

So, my vpn connections work if I use my UML290 on windows using verizon access manager
I am now using the new verizon access manager on my mac, and my VPN connections do NOT work. It tries to connect then immediately stops the attempt at connecting and fails (i can access other websites etc OK, I have connectivity!)
This is a huge problem for me

    Hello,
I have been having the same problems. When not connected to VPN, things work fine. When VPN connects, all traffic stops passing, even though there is a successful connection. When I disconnect VPN, all traffic resumes.
I have gone through this with technical support even to the point of doing a trace during the problem and they confirm that the traffic drops, but do not feel it is a network issue. This problem does not happen with any other network adapter I use (Wi-Fi, T-mobile 4G laptop stick).
I've put together links of articles I have found online describing this problem and probable cause - which I think is an IP address conflict in the 10.x.x.x space. No resolution has been offered to me. I hope these articles help others or if they are having the same experience they might post here.
http://delicious.com/stacks/view/SL8rGb - "Verizon LTE problems with VPN using Pantech UML 290" - Link Stack
If anyone comes across a resolution or knows if there will be an update of any kind to fix this, I would appreciate it, thank you.

  • Mac pro locks up when ipod is connected

I have a total of four different ipods connecting, recharging to my mac pro. Only one of them causes a problem - the moment it is connected, my system freezes up. No mouse movement, nothing. All I can do is push-hold the power button to shutdown and turn it back on. Anyone know of a help article to point me in the right direction?

After re-installing iTunes, and doing a full restore on my iPod, I have determined that it was some album cover art that seemed to be causing the problem. The iPod would start to sync, and then hang on one song. Deleted that song, and it synced a little more, and got hung up again on another song from the same album.
I deleted the entire album from my iTunes library, and the iPod synced just fine. I re-ripped the CD in question, this time with out adding ablum cover art, and it worked perfectly.
Now I wonder why iTunes is getting stuck on certian album cover art. The CD in question is Eric Clapton's "Crossroads". iTunes was unable to retreive the album cover art when I ripped the CD [perhaps because iTunes has it listed as "Crossroads (Box Set)"], so I just scanned the cover of the CD and added it that way. I have done this with other CDs, and had no problems what so ever. Anyone have any clue as to why this would happen?

  • Mac Pro refuses to sleep on it's own.

My Mac Pro used to be able to go to sleep by setting the Energy Saver settings to automatically sleep after so many minutes. It no longer sleeps at all on it's own. Lemme explain.
If I put my computer to sleep with the Apple Menu, or Power Button or any other manual method of sleeping my computer, it works but, if I leave it to sleep on it's own only the screen will go black. When I move my mouse, the screen will instantly come back on as if only the screen was sleeping. I know what a normal sleep sounds like... I'd hear a few clicks and hard disk spin downs and then my screen would go black but, it does not do that.
To prevent a bunch of people asking the "Have you tried...?" questions, I'll go ahead and list the things that I have already tried and failed.
    1. Repaired permissions
    2. Unplugged any external gadget (USB and FireWire)
    3. Tried a brand new user
    4. Tried Restarting (Hey, couldn't hurt to just Restart)
    5. Checked for weird login items (Only EyeTV Helper which has been there the whole time even before the sleep problem)
    6. Made sure my software was up to date (latest security and OS Updates)

    8. Checked Activity Monitor for any strange processes running
    9. Checked for scanner software (Couldn't find it)
    10. Tried switching the Mighty Mouse to the right keyboard USB port
    11. Tried un-mounting all hard drives (except for boot drive)

  • MAC PRO REFUSES TO BE CLOCKED BY EXTERNAL WORDCLOCK!

I used my Apogee Rosetta 200 as AD/DA and Wordclock going direktly into optical input on a G5 ...
    worked perfectly together for years.
pretty much what i loved macs for.
alas! those times are gone. with my new built mid 2010 machine and os 10.6.8 running, i get these
tiny clicks all the time, whatever they mean now... in the past on G5 and Tiger that meant: forgot switch to external clock in
the AMS (audio-midi-setup), done it, and ::: wow!!!
nowadays: total fail! i can set the Rosetta or the mac to whatever settings there are offerd, i ALWAYS get these clicks
and the sound is dull ...
i wonder, what has happenend here ... and after a month of research i´m getting really angry, too ...
Apogee claimed that Apple is known for changing the specs of the built in internal soundcard
every now an then. (not much help from there, either, but still better than no help at all from Apple)
Dear all: please,  i don´t need any of those "get a firewire-card/new interface, sth with a driver" - comments.
I just want the mac pro to live up to it´s name. and i need someone at Apple to tell me, that i really have to
completely rearrange my trustet & expensive equipment and spend another 2000 EUR to let a MAC PRO
sound as good as a 5 year old G5 machine ... (or be as fast, talking about 32 Bit modus!!!)
this whole development scares the **** out of me .. we surely do
not want to change the plattform, but one gets the notion that not before long they just want us to ...
    sorry for bothering ...

    Hi louie!
thank you so very much for caring!! I´ll try to provide as much information as possible:::
    sorted it into ABCD
    A: THE MAC
Machine is a MAC PRO5,1 built mid 2010, Quad Core Intel Xeon 2,4 Ghz
System is 10.6.8   (had the same issues under 10.7.x, too)
i get those clicks every 10 - 15 Seconds, some left, some right,
i get them in every audio, e.g. quicktime movies., itunes songs ... no so frequently, but they are there ..
Sound is otherwise ok, no fuzz or other artefacts than the clicksies ...
borrowed a Fireface UC just to be sure ... no clickies at all.
    B: AMS
in AMS i created a "Hauptgerät" (Main Device or whatever its called in the US System)
    it shows:
    DIGITAL INPUT (with a Clock-Icon)
DIGTAL OUTPUT (With a wave icon)
With MAIN DEVICE highlightes, the puldown menu on the right says: "Source for clock : Digital Inpit (inegrated)"
In the list of audio-devices below Digi-Out and In boxes are checked, AMS puts a checksign into the "resample" of Digital Output ... don´t know why ...
If beneath MAIN DEVICE i highlight the "digital input" it shows on the right:::
    Master stream
    source: Internal Clock
    Format: 44100,0 kkz 10 Channel, 24 Bit
But AMS crashes everytime i highlight "digital input" (thats a new "feature"!)
    C: ROSETTA 200
says Wide/Narrow , meaning "clock locked"
    Sample Rate 44,1
SRC is not on, neither on DIGI nor ANALOG outputs
WC/IO ist not set to external
(i don´t know the rosetta so well, it just always worked, so i never had to dig deeper)
    D: LOGIC
as far as i know and reseached there is no place in Logic where you would talk care of
    clocking (apart from MTC)
I/O Buffer is 256 Samples, but anyway, i have the clicks on every audio from every application
so, thats all i can offer you ... can you think of whats going wrong here?!?!? i do hope so ...
thanks for offering your help ,,, much appreciated!!!
    best

  • My 2009 mac pro won't communicate with the connected monitor

my mac pro desktop was bought roughly in 2009.its running the latest os that this model can run with tiger.the problem used to be intermittent, now it is very hard to get this thing to communicate with the external monitor.the led on the mac shows that its on but it won't chime as it starts up.whenever it did cut on,it would stay on for a moment then a dark tint would scroll over the screen desktop from top to bottom and everything freezes.i then have to turn off the computer from the button.A side note:This computer never functioned properly from day one when i was using it to run my protools music recording DAW.i could barely complete songs as it would run out of cpu and processing power.the computer has 14 gigs of ram,and quad core processing.i took it to apple store for tech support but they found nothing.now i am solely trying to run my serato dj software with it.based on these symptoms, what is wrong with my computer? is it software problem or is it a bad graphics card, bad cpu,is there any parts i can buy to inexpensively overhaul this computer?

it won't chime as it starts up.
Then it has a Hardware problem. Macs run a Power-On Self Test, and the chime is generated in software when the first part of the test has passed, and if a suitable source of software can be found, booting is likely.
Is the power light flashing in a pattern? That indicates "not enough working RAM to start up."
