MacPro Intel IDE drives to SATA ??

I have a MacPro that I purchased new in 2008 with 2.8 GHz Xeons and GeForce 8800 video cards with SATA hard drives BUT with IDE optical drives and I want them to be SATA also for my BluRay burner rather than have to put the BRD in my Windows machine which I want to sell.
So can someone give me advice on the quick and easy way to convert my MacPro from IDE optical drives (two bays) to SATA?
Thanks in advance to those who respond.

PCI-X is an old PCI specification
PCIe or PCI Express is what you have to have.
Most people use PCIe cards for external drives, not internal. There are exceptions like SSD drives people often put in that lower optical bay, and go with external BR.
My PC, I use Intel RAID Storage Manager for the hard drives. The Mac Pro uses the basic Intel Skulltrail platform reference design motherboard wtih its support for dual Xeon and such. Wouldn't be impossible to have RAID via motherboard, though software RAID0 is fine anyway as it is.
OWC is the best place to find your way around. That way takes the worry out and they have install videos for most major items. They have your BR and SATA optical drives and most (but not all) hard drive controllers.
Why not SATA? Did they provide better performance in late 2007, when the system was being engineered? had IDE hit a roadblock and DVDs needed more bandwidth than available?

  • Cannot use IDE drive with SATA drive

I just installed a 60GB Maxtor Serial ATA hard drive in VIA port 1. However, when I install my previous Maxtor 20GB EIDE hard drive in IDE1, bootup hangs at the "Serial Ch. 0/Ch. 1 device" detection screen.
Is there a trick to this??? I really need the data off my IDE drive. How do I get an IDE drive to exist along side a pre-installed SATA drive?
And does it matter if the IDE drive is set for Master or Slave?

The IDE drive should be set to "master" or "slave" depending on which connector of the cable you're using.  The IDE cable included with the board clearly labels which is which.
You didn't say but I'll assume you have a K8T Neo.
If you still cannot get it to work, you should try the Promise controller.

  • Installing IDE drives into MacPro

I'm in the market for a MacPro. I have 2 IDE 3.5" drives, currently connected via FireWire in their own cases, that I'd like to use in the MacPro. I realize that the DIY HD install documents say I need a SATA drive, but is there any way to install my IDE drives into the HD drive bays (not the optical drive bay)?

    You are welcome.

  • SATA + OLD IDE DRIVE=BSOD

I bought a new SATA drive and need to transfer files to it from my old
IDE drive. The IDE drive doesn't have any OS on it, it was previously a
slave drive used to store files.
I hooked up the SATA drive, installed XP, everything works fine. But,
when I hook in the IDE drive--as either a master or slave--the system
loads all the way up till I can see the desktop, and then immediately
    crashes with a B.S.O.D.
Before the SATA drive was installed, the IDE drive in question was a
slave drive and worked fine (another IDE drive was the master).
What is causing this problem, and how can I fix it?

Also include the powersupply specs including the max amps of the 3.3v 5v and 12v rails. This info can be found on a sticker on the side of the psu.

  • New SATA drive showing as IDE drive in Bios

Just wanted to hear from some of you guys...not sure if this is right but seems weird for the bios to say my SATA drive is IDE..when its going through bios or if your selecting which drive to boot to first its listed as an IDE drive..could someone please tell me if this is correct...

    This is correct.

  • How many IDE drives & CDrom can be installed with SATA drives??

How many IDE drives & CDrom can be installed with SATA drives??
i have 2 IDE hard disks & 2 CDROM drives: can install SATA hard disk added to these drives or do i have to remove some???
& if it can be added, can i install 2 SATA drives???
    THX in advance

The 3 versions of this board that are available are:
    875P Neo-FISR (PCB 2.0)
    875P Neo-LSR (PCB 1.0)
    875P Neo-FIS2R (PCB 1.0)
All of these boards will have the following ports provider by the chipsets ICH5R south bridge.
2 x SATA (Supporting 2 SATA HDD drives)
    2 x PATA (Supporting 4 IDE devices)
All 6 of these can be used at the same time (provided you are using win XP or 2K) you just need to make sure yor BIOS is set right.
    ->INTEGRATED PERIPHERALS
    ->ON-CHIP IDE CONFIG
ATA CONFIG: S-ATA ONLY or P-ATA ONLY
    S-ATA/P-ATA KEEP ENABLED: YES
    OPERATE MODE:
If you set to "legacy mode" S-ATA are set to channel 1 and 2 and P-ATA to channel 3 and 4. If you set to "native mode" P-ATA are channel 1 and 2 and S-ATA 3 and 4. You can only use the raid functionfon SATA in native mode.
If you have the 875P Neo-FIS2R (PCB 1.0) you will also have the following ports provided by the Promise PDC20378 PCI controller:
2 x SATA (Supporting 2 SATA HDD drives)
1 x PATA (Supporting 1 Master IDE HDD drive)
The PATA port is limited to 1 Master HDD by the lite BIOS. This can in theory be upgraded to the full BIOS supporting a master and a slave, but this may obviously void your warranty.
So the answer to your origional question is:
    2 x SATA HDDs and 4 x IDE HDD/CDROM if you have 875P Neo-FISR (PCB 2.0) or 875P Neo-LSR (PCB 1.0)
    or
    4 x SATA HDDs, 1 x IDE HDD (2 if you modify the BIOS) and 4 x IDE HDD/CDROM if you have 875P Neo-FIS2R (PCB 1.0)

  • [Athlon64] -(RS480M2) - Best choice: SATA or IDE Drive ?

Yesterday I orderered a above mentioned MOBO and today I am reading some posts to see what the subjects mainly are.
And I am a bit confused about the choice I made for the HD...it´s a SATA Maxtor diamondmax 10 200G (no other HD).
There seems to be a solution for bad performance with SATA, but is it still is a good choice working with this solution (concerning performance and trouble) ?? Or is it better to change it to an IDE drive while it still can...

Go with the SATA Maxtor, they are fast, quiet and good value. Just make sure you install it in the BIOS and Windows correctly.
I have updated my post to include HD Tach measurements for a Samsung IDE drive alongside a DiamondMax 10 SATA https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=86831.0
I intend to give the Samsung to the next member of my family that runs out of disk space and get another DiamondMax 10 for my system. Will have to get another SATA cable as well 'cause MSI only give you one with the motherboard.

  • RS480M2 sees IDE drive but not SATA drive

I had never had any problems with my computer until now. I installed a Samsung 250GB IDE drive internally besides my usual Samsung 80GB SATA drive but the BIOS does not see the SATA (which is connected to IDE Controller), it only recognizes the new IDE (connected to Channel 0 Master). I also have a LiteOn CD connected to Channel 1 and it is OK. The SATA drive was working normally before as the only drive and I also know the new IDE drive works because I used it on an external enclosure as a backup. Any ideas?

You may need to try cable select instead.

  • KM4M-V + SATA Drive, Hangs at Boot, Tried IDE Drive and During Setup, Powers Off

I bought 2 KM4M-V boards to upgrade my ailing 1880+ systems. Then realized I needed DDR as well so went back for that and also decided to update CPU's to Sempron 2600+. Also picked up Seagate 80Gb SATA and a 350 watt PSU (Alaska ATX 350 P4) which was recommened for this board by the dealer.
I am having so much trouble I am about to throw in the towel. Since I am 'upgrading' everything in the system except the CDRom drive I should have just started all over with 64-bit systems but now I am kind of stuck since it is over 30 days ago I got the MB's.
    Problem 1:
Using only the single SATA drive I never could get past the DMI Pool data line in Setup, it would just hang there. I read all about how to deal with SATA drives with this or similar boards here. SATA is enabled in BIOS but I can never get to the F6 load drivers step to try that. If I remove the SATA cable Setup will procede so it is something with the Seagate possibly? No jumpers needed and no preparation done to the drive. BIOS does not see the drive but the setup RAID utility does see it but says I cannot set up single drive as RAID of course, but it does report proper data about the drive. Never can get past Bios POST with SATA drive hooked up (channel 0 or 1)
Finally gave up on that and ran into Problem 2:
Put an older IDE drive in as only HD and XP Windows setup gets cranking along coping files then the system just dies. Like some pulled the plug suddenly. Happen every time. I checked for heat problems. Even ran through memory tests (SIMMTESTER), tried swapping cables, plugs and wall circuits. It dies every time no matter what.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

DMI pool data? When changing mobo but keeping hard disk one should do a repair install of Windows and install the mobo drivers for the new mobo.
I originally wanted to keep the Windows install but decided to remove original C drive and save for eventual D drive use. A repair install warns you that your 'My Documents' folder 'may' be deleted and I didn't want to risk it as I have years and years of photos I didn't want to risk losing.

Addit: Seems something isn't right in the IDE configuration, or what Windows think is the config.
Bios is happy with WD drive as single master on one channel and CDRom as single master on the other (No jumper on Drive- osnavi). Windows install starts out just fine with my intention of creating a new partition but then it just BOOM, power off. My preference is to use the new SATA Baracuda as system drive and my old IDE C drive as D drive...

  • Added Hybrid SATA drive to ThinkCentre - does not recognize old IDE drive - Suggestions?

I added a 1TB Seagate Hybrid drive to my old ThinkCentre 808532U.  I removed the jumper from the old IDE drive so it would be considered the secondary.  I installed Windows 7 Professional 32 bit on the hybrid SATA.  The old IDE had Windows XP.  I want to use the old IDE drive as the secondary so I can access the data, pictures, etc.  I do NOT want to boot XP. The system boots up fine with Windows 7.  However, the system does not recognize the old IDE drive.  I have gone into BIOS and changed the Parallel ATA to Secondary.  The system still does not recognize the old IDE drive.   Can someone provide recommendations? Thanks,Napp

I finally experimented enough that I found the solution!  I tried putting all the IDE drives into Startup even though none showed any hardware assigned.  I set Parallel ATA to Both.  My machine  would start up but not show the Logo screen or any screen for that matter.  I put a Windows 7 install disk into the DVD ROM and got the Logo screen.  I F1'd back into BIOS and suddenly two of the IDE entries in Startup were populated with the DVD drives.  I set the order I wanted in Startup and saved the configuration.  When Windows started it installed drivers for two devices.  I looked into Computer and all the drives were listed!!!!!!!!!!!   So now after several long nights I have my system configured properly for all the drives and all Windows 7 updates applied.  I am waiting for delivery of a 256M graphics adapter and a gigabit ethernet adapter to see if I can increase performance.  Time to sleep now..............

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum - Is the MSI IDE Driver required to run SATA RAID

I am using Windows XP and am booting from an IDE Disk.
I then added 2 x SATA Disks for RAID.
I changed the BIOS, Configured the Striping RAID Set and booted from the IDE Disk.
The PC detected the RAID Controller and I loaded the Driver.
Whatever I do the PC will only recognise the two SATA Drives as single drives not a RAID Set.
I did not load the MSI IDE Driver because I had read some threads that suggested there were problems with this.
I think the thread was related to problems with the errors in the Event Log related to the RAID driver.
    Thanks

  • Sata and ide drive troubles

I tried searching on this, but didn't find what I was looking for.  If my sata drive is plugged in on it's own, everything boots fine, but when I hook up my ide drive, windows won't boot.  It goes through the Nvidia boot utility and tells me it can't find a boot disk.  Even if I go through and manually select the sata drive as the boot drive, it still doesn't work.  I've tried the ide drive on my primary channel with a cdrw on the secondary, and vice versa.  I know it will work, because it worked previously.  Had to format and reinstall and now it's a no go.  I've tried the sata on channels 1 and 3 with nothing different

I must say I had similar problem.   While swapping IDE cables back and forth among different hdrives, the computer would not boot, would not even recognize the WD or Maxtor hard drive in any master/slave configuration.  In fact in the POST,  it would see my SATA Hitachi, but would refuse to boot from it.
The solution was a new replacement IDE cable.  I guess, after several dozens of swaps, if not careful, some of the tiny cable strands in the IDE cable will be damaged permanently as a result of pulling on them while trying to connect/disconnect them.   The evidence of a damaged IDE cable is not apparent.  This happened to the red MSI supplied cable that came with my mobo.
After struggling with this problem for a day, I did come up with the idea of just trying and replacing the cable, and voila - problem was solved, and puter booted up no problem.
    Hope that helps.

  • K8n Neo2 Plat Sata Raid 0 and IDE drive - Board won't detect IDE

I have my K8n Neo2 Platinum board configured just fine for 2 WD raptor sata drives in raid 0.  However, I need to add more space so I went out and got a Seagate 180gb IDE drive.  I plug it into the primary IDE slot and the board won't detect the new hard drive.  I have 2 DVD-ROM drives working fine in the Secondary IDE slot.  Why won't the K8n detect what is plugged into the primary IDE slot?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Jeff

    Okay...
First, remove both of your DVD Drives and try connecting the new HD to the Secondary IDE Interface as master.  Use 'cable-select'.  If the drive then works, leave everything set to cable-select, and try installing the HD as master, and one DVD drive as slave, on the primary channel.   Next, set the other DVD drive to cable select, and install it on the secondary interface as a slave.
If the drive is still not detected after removing both DVD Drives, then try installing the DVD Drives onto the primary interface.  If they work, then you've most likely got a bad HDD.  If they don't...  your mainboard may be bad.

  • Existing IDE drive into a new G5?

I'm considering buying a new G5 (intel Mac) or getting a used G5 (non-intel) and wondered if I can simply put my exising IDE drive from a G4 into either the intel mac or into a late-model G5? That would save me a lot of time re-installing software into a new machine.
    Thanks.

One way would be to get SATA-ATA power and data adaptor cables, since the G5s only accept SATA drives.
Here's one example; you might be able to shop around for a cheaper deal.
Or, you could just pick up a relatively cheap 3.5" ATA enclosure and use it as an external Firewire drive.

  • Need help installing Intel Lan Driver on a Satellite A100-011

I have bought Toshiba Satellite A100-011 notebook with Windows Vista. Now I downgraded the os to Windows XP. The problem is how to install Intel Lan Driver. I would really appreciate any help, because there is no .exe file and I have no idea, what to do with those files.

    Hi buddy,
the files which are in the zip file are really the drivers but you have to install them manually which means you must go to the device manager, search for the LAN device which probably should have a exclamation mark and then right-click on it. After clicking a wizard should appear which leads you trough the installation process. When the wizard asks for drivers (if not already automatically found) then point on the folder where the driver files are located.
Then everything should be fine. :)
