Mail keeps populating server info

Okay, I want to reinstall Mail... wipe the cobwebs out and freshly enter information.  Problem is, it keeps repopulating the information from somewhere before I have a chance to set it up.  I deleted the mail folder in the Library, the mail preferences in Preferences, even manually removed the mail keychains from Keychains.  Launch Mail, poof everything is repopulated back into the Mail preferences, passwords, server addresses, et al.  Where is it getting this information?  I want to do a fresh install of mail without any of the past info because I suspect that it may be corrupted in some way.  But I can't test that because it keeps adding the old information automatically from places unknown.
Anyone know how to completely wipe Mail so that it cannot create a new account without user input directly?  Like when you first bought the machine and it didn't know anything about you at all.

Try going to home folder> mail>mailboxes mail do the same thing, then try recreating the mail acccounts, if all is good secure empty trash of envelope indexes.  Hope this helps.  ATB

  • Mac mail auto populates server info and...

Once I go back and edit the server info, still getting error sending email. Can pull fine, just error when sending.
Yes, I have tripple checked all mail settings online and with tech support, they are correct.  iMac is working just fine.  MacBook is the issue, and I had to use my password for the wireless network so I'm on my network.

    Any ideas?

The Exchange server's autodiscover feature is probably the culprit.  Maybe try editing the hosts file or using Little Snitch to block access to the autodiscover URL.

  • Mail keeps saying "server rejected password

    Hi
Does anyone know why with increasing frequency, when I click "get mail" for my pop account Mail has started to say "server has rejected password" and asks me to re enter the password. I do so putting the correct password in and it keeps coming back with the same message.
Then for no apparent reason it just stops doing that and allows messages to download from my pop account.

I got this problem resolved yesterday with remote assistance from my Bell server. Apparently, my password entry in my Mail Account had been corrupted or changed, so even entering the right password continued to be rejected.
We solved the problem by resetting my email password with my server, then entering the new password in my Account info in Mail.
By the way, my webmail with Bell worked fine, so there was nothing wrong with my settings. That pointed to password problems.
The question remains, though, Why did Mail mess up my password Account entry in the first place?
Hope this helps the rest of you struggling with this really annoying problem.

  • Mail keeps crashing whenever it attempts to connect to .mac server

Ugh. I have been having some major problemos w/ my mac lately (if you're up to it, search my other recent posts -- all of which are still open and needing resolutions).
Anyway, this issue pertains to Mail. Whenever the app tries to connect to the mail.mac.com server, it crashes. I'm not sure why. I've been reduced to checking my mail online which isn't great... and I'm falling behind in productivity since usually my Mail auto filters most of my incoming email to certain local folders.
I'm not sure if it's related or not, but my keychain has erased (or at least I can no longer access) ALL my logins and passwords and it won't let me add any new ones. The reason why I thought I'd mention this bit of info is that there's a "Remember this password in my keychain" check box on the window in Mail that prompts me to enter my password for the mail server. When I enter the password and click "ok", I get an error box that says "Keychain 'login' cannot be found to store 'kingp.'
Also another thing worth noting... I submitted a post a few weeks ago (this one regarded all my addresses being lost) and 2 people replied to the post. I know this because I got 2 auto emails from Apple stating that someone had posted a reply. However, when I click on the link in each email to visit the thread, I get an error page. And even when I log in and look at my posts and responses, neither responses is there. I'm starting to feel like a PC user -- I thought I'd never say that about Mac!! (If you're a real mac user, you know how ****** off you have to be to say that).
Please help restore faith! ANY help is greatly appreciated.

Hi David... For the longest time, I could not see your post. I received the heads up email from Apple saying there is a new reply to your post, but when I'd go online to see it, it wouldn't show! Very weird. Anyway, I was able to see it now. Since this original post, I was able to get help for my Mail problems. However, I still had issues pertaining to my Keychain which I believe your recommened actions took care of.
After I did the keychain repair you suggested, this is what I got:
    Repair started
Checking keychain configuration for Peter King (user ID=501)
    Home directory is /Users/kingp
    Checked login keychain
Keychain ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain appears to be damaged
    Renamed /Users/kingp/Library/Keychains/login.keychain to /Users/kingp/Library/Keychains/login_renamed.keychain
    Created login keychain
User differs on ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.security.plist, should be 501, owner is 0
    Owner corrected on ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.security.plist
    Checked default keychain
    Checked keychain search list
    Checked contents of ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
    Checked contents of /Library/Keychains/FileVaultMaster.keychain
    Problems successfully repaired
    Repair completed
I like that it says "Problems successfully repaired" ;0) but I seem to have lost all my keychain data. Any ideas as to how to recover it?
    Thanks again...

  • I had a MobileMe account before... after upgrading to iOS 5, should I keep my account info under iCloud (settings) AND under mail, contacts and calendars (in Settings as well) or only keep the info under the new iCloud setting section?

I had a MobileMe account before... after upgrading to iOS 5, should I keep my account info under iCloud (settings) AND under mail, contacts and calendars (in Settings as well) or only keep the info under the new iCloud setting section?

That's not the correct port. It should be 993 for incoming.
If you signed into iCloud from the System Preferences, it should automatically create the iCloud account for you in Mail. Sounds like it is an account you already had set up for MMe in Mail.
Open Mail preferences, open the Accounts tab, disable that account in the advanced pane.
Open Sys Prefs, open the iCloud tab, and sign out of iCloud. Then sign back in and see if a new iCloud account is automatically created.

  • I have an iMac, and have a Verizon DSL account. Recently, my Mac Mail keeps requesting the passwords on my account every few minutes, and will not allow me to send messages using Mac Mail. I cannot edit the outgoing server; how can I send emails?

I have an iMac, and have a Verizon DSL account (3 email addresses). Recently, my Mac Mail keeps requesting the passwords on my accounts every few minutes, and will not allow me to send messages using Mac Mail (the message says that the outgoing server was rejected. I cannot edit the outgoing server, and the keychain will not save my passwords (the ports are valid). How can I change the outgoing server to send emails, and how can I avoid having Mail request my passwords every 2 minutes? Verizon, as usual, will not provide support to iMacs.

Is there an email saved in your drafts or outbox folder?  I suspect that Mail is continually trying to send it, and each time Google is rejecting the email message.
You can open the message and then delete it from your Outbox folder.  Then try removing all @gmail email addresses from it and seeing whether you can send to the other folks.  I suspect that will work.
With email, if an SMTP server *can* verify email addresses, sometimes it will and it will refuse to send messages.  If a message has to be relayed across servers, no verification is done, and you'll get a bounce if an email address is bad.

  • HT1277 all of a sudden I am not able to send out mail. I have checked and rechecked my account information including incoming and outgoing server info.

all of a sudden I am not able to send out mail. I have checked and rechecked my account information including incoming and outgoing server info. Does anyone know what the problem might be? Thanks

If you're having trouble sending mail, then either the SMTP (outbound) mail server settings — the server, the port, the user, the password, and whether SSL is in use or (unlikely) not — are incorrect, or the mail server is offline or has been reconfigured.
The SMTP (outbound) settings are in Preferences, but are buried rather deeply.  Select Preferences > Accounts > select the account > switch the outgoing mail server (SMTP) to Edit SMTP Server List... and then select the SMTP server from the list, and verify that the settings are correct with your ISP, and that your username and password are correct.
The required settings vary by your particular mail ISP; you'll have to check with the ISP for the server and login details.
To test settings, select Window > Connection Doctor > then (when the tests fail) show the details, and (if you can't sort out what happened) sanitize the settings and post the output here.
Caveat: do not repeat password tests with the mail server, as various mail providers can be configured to assume these are a password brute-force attack, and lock out repeated login attempts.
Caveat: never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever not-at-all enter a password when Mail pops up a dialog box with the "OMG YOUR PASSWORD IS WRONG!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE ENSURE YOU CANNOT LOG IN AGAIN!!!!!" dialog box.  (I'm paraphrasing that error dialog box slightly.)  The correct answer to that Mail.app password dialog box is almost always "cancel" button.  Passwords stored in Keychain generally don't get lost or corrupted, and trying random passwords as that dialog box encourages just gets you locked out of various servers, and...

I changed the outgoing and the incoming server info.  Did not change the port numbers.  Do I need to do this?  I was able to send and receive but now I have duplicate messages in my in box!  How do I change this?  Am I doing this correct?

I was having this trouble as well. Yesterday I disabled the MobileMe account in Mail preferences (mac.com is my only email) and duplicate messages have stopped. The sidebar changes back to what I was used to in the last version of OS X (all the mobileme gunk is gone). So far so good.

  • Mail keeps trying to use .mac server - help

This concerns my mothers iMac that we just put a clean install of Panther on.
In mail, it attempts to use a .mac smtp server to send the mail. I went to preferences>accounts and even deleted the .mac smtp account. I left her Charter account there as the only account visible.
Still, mail attempts to send the emails using the .mac smtp server. An error window pops up asking to verify server info. We called Charter and all our information is correct for Mail. In the error window, the only server it gives us to select to send the mail is .mac smtp

You may have tried this already, but just in case :
If you go into your Mail preference/accounts settings again, and into "account information", can you see a box at the bottom marked "server settings " ?
If so, you should be able click it, and then delete or modify the smtp server(s).

  • Mail keeps downloading the same message severytime iit logs into the server

    Hi,
I have several acocunts all retrieving mail from various servers.
Yesterday changed a configuration from one server to stop automatically forwarding e-mail to another server and, instead, just have mail retrieve the messages directly from that box.
Now, for some inexplicable reason, mail keeps retriving the same messages stored on each server everytime it logs in. I know have up to 4 - 6 copies of some messages in both mail boxes for these two servers. I have re-examined all my settings and they are as they should be.
I fanally trashed all old mail on the servers (there was over 1500 from the past week on one which was continuosly being downloaded.)
What could possible be causing it? How do I fix it?
    Thanks.
    G5 1.6Gz Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Never mind about the Junk Folder missing. I found out about that.
Still receiving the duplicate e-mails though.
Thanks for your help. Please read comments below.
    Hi Matthew.
For POP accounts, Mail uses a file within the
    account
folder to keep track of which messages have
    already
been downloaded. That file may have become corrupt
    or
the data stored there may have become invalid for
    some reason.
You may try deleting that file so that Mail
    creates
it anew, but that will also cause Mail to treat
everything still on the server as if new
    and
    try to download it again:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. In the Finder, go to the
    ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/
    account folder.
    3. Locate one or two files named
    MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded and move them
    to
    the Trash. Mail 1.x used
    MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded
to keep track of which messages had already been
    downloaded. Mail 2.x uses
    MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2 for the same
    purpose.
Alternatively, you may try clicking Remove
    now
in Preferences > Accounts > Advanced, which
should both remove from the server the messages
    that
Mail thinks have already been downloaded and reset
    MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded.
I tried both of these messages. No luck. I finally
jsut set one of the accounts to immediately delete
the message once it has retrieved it from the server,
though that takes away a certain piece of mind that
it exists in two places at least for a weel.
Anyway. Niw my Junk mail folder has disappeared. I
had it set to train and this morning when I opened
mai it asked if I wanted it to change to automatic.
I said yes and went about looking at new mails.
There qere a lot of junk mail not beeing tagged as I
began to use command-shift-j to mark this messages,
the first few turned brown as they should. The, all
of a sudden, messages started disappearing. When I
looked for the Junk Mail folder on the left, it was
gone! I still have no idea where it is. I spent the
afternoon backing up an d running Disk Warrior. But
Junk didn't return. Any clues? (Possibly this
    should be a new thread)
BTW, what are your Preferences > Accounts >
Advanced > Remove copy from server settings?
I had them set to be removed after a week. No I have
one removing them as they are retrieved. This
computer's been running like that for 3 years. Not
sure gremlin has gotten into the works but it's
    frustrating as ****.
Note: For those not familiarized with
    the
~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home
folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library
    folder
    within the user’s home folder.

  • TS3276 Mail keeps checking a pop server related to an account I deleted.

    Dear Friends,
A few months ago I upgraded to Lion and all Mail accounts were moved to the new version of Mail.
A couple of weeks after I deletes the pop account related to my company web server. All the messages not moved to different folder were deleted and the pop server and SMTP server 10.1.11.100 disappeared from the server list.
I realized from the "Activity" window that Mail keeps checking it for new e-mail.
I deleted Mail's preference file without success. I searched with spotlight for an occurrence of "10.1.11.100" in files and system files without any result.
Is there any further step I can take to stop Mail from checking this server that doesn't exist anymore?
    Many thanks in advance!
    Regards,
    lS.

Check the smtp outgoing server list and see if one still exists for that account. If so, delete it.
