Mail quit-erased account info and emails

When I was trying to send an email, Mail quit. Didn't think much of it...just a gliche. When re-opened, I noticed ALL my emails were gone and upon further investigation, noticed that my account info had been replaced with a .mac account that I have never opened. Also, there was some weird "delivered" folder that showed up in the mailboxes, but had nothing in it.
Since then I've restored the accounts and working on trying to import my emails...
I really have no idea what happened, but if anyone has figured this one out, please let me know....I can't have this happen again.
Mac OS 10.4.4, Mail 2.0.5

What is your hard drive capacity and available free space?
If you don't have adequate free hard drive space required for OS X to function properly, corruption or loss of application preference files can occur and all account information and general Mail.app preferences is stored in the Mail.app preference file.

  • Mail erases account info and now requires a new port number to send mail

well like the topic said, my mail tends to erase all my account info, and when I re-enter it it says I cannot send or receive mail.
I somehow now got it so I can GET mail but it still won't let me send mail citing that the port number is wrong and now asks for an IMAP path prefix... sheesh...
    any suggestions?
    thanks!

OK...OK I think I fixed it... sorry for the crazed post
i was trying to change the port in the wrong window... i did the old 'change to port 587 trick' ...whew

  • HT4519 after setting up a new account to my SMTP server and saving info how it goes to the account info and not to my mail. ta suzie

After setting up a new account to my SMTP server and saving info how do I open it? When I touch on my new account bigpond.com it goes to the account info and not to my mail

To read your emails you need to come out of Settings and go into the separate Mail app from on your homescreen :
The Settings 'app' is for defining settings for various apps and for the iPad as a whole.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
If you are unable to remember your password, security questions, don’t have access to your rescue address or are unable to reset your password for whatever reason, your only option is to contact AppleCare(or Apple ID Support), upon speaking to an operator you should explain that your problem is related to your Apple ID, this way you will not be charged for assistance, even if you don’t have an AppleCare plan.

I purchased a song on itunes and when I play it, it says my computer is not authorized. A window pops to authorize my computer so I type in my account info and hit authorize. After that a window pops up saying it is already authorized but still won't play. None of this happens with any other songs on my itunes. I would just purchase the song again but I can't because every time I try to purchase it, the song says "play" next to it instead of "buy." When I hit play no music plays it just goes back to saying my computer is not authorized so I authorize it and it says it is already authorized then I click it again and it says my computer is not authorized. It's a never ending annoying circle. How can I get the song to play?

If you live in a Region that allows re-downloading Music...
    Delete the Song(s) and re-download...

I have some money from a card still on my account that I would like to use.

This has been an issue with some users for close to 24 hours now. I've been getting the error for the last 5 or so hours myself.
Having problems is understandable, it happens. and if this is related to the iCloud hack reported yesterday it is good to know Apple is trying to fix the issue.
But it sure would be nice if there was an official statement from Apple concerning this.

  • Ive gotten 3 responses from you guys. But still no help. Can't believe it's taken this long for apple to respond to this issue and I'm very disappointed that all I did was take precaution from left to my account info and my account has been disabled since

Sad that we can't do any updates to equipment I've spent so much money in. Hope this is resolved real soon.

If there is something you would like to ask - user to user - please do so. Otherwise, you are wasting your time complaining about Apple, since we are not Apple.

  • HT201272 trying to download purchases and it says"you do not have priveldges to access this network. Please check your network connection." This computer is authorized and I checked my account info and it is correct. Any help?

I am trying to download purchases made from my Iphone4 and it says "I do not have privledges to access the network. Please check your network connection and try again." I have checked my account info and it is good. I have made sure my pc is authorized and it is. Any ideas? I am on a gateway with windows 7 with all updates. Running Itunes 10.6.3.

I also have a new iPad and am having the same problem. I have tried all the apple troubleshooting tips and changing the DNS server, as well as setting up a new Apple ID. I already had an ID and it has worked for a year with my iPod. It works on the iPad with apps but not with Facetime or iMessage. I have changed router settings, added Google DNS to my PC as a DNS....nothing. I am at my wits end

  • Account Info and gMail

When I access "Account Info" in Mail (command-i), my gMail POP accounts show zero messages. This doesn't happen with Yahoo POP mail, or with my local ISP's mail. Is this an issue with Mail, or with gMail? And, is there a workaround?
    Thanks,
    Dave

Open Mail. Use the key combination "command-i". A window called "Account Info" will appear. At the top is a pulldown menu listing your various email accounts. Pick one. Then, pick the button that says "Messages on Server". Below, a list of messages will appear. If they have not yet been downloaded by Mail, they'll have a blue, "unread" icon in the first column.
I use three different email carriers - I can see read and unread messages in two of them. I can see nothing in my gMail accounts. I'd like to fix that.

  • Syncronization: How can i store mail for different accounts remotely, and copy most important mails manually to local folders on two devices?

Hello. I have two devices and two accounts, so what i want is this:
I only want to store mail from both accounts in a remote place and copy most important mails to local folders.
(I will be grateful for any ideas as to where/how this "cloud" can be - specially free places)
    * Can I have a copy of these local folders in both devices and the remote storage?
    * Could i synchronize devices so that: when i move a mail to a local folder in any device, its copied to the same folders in
the other device and the remote storage place?
    * The remote storage place will have many other folders. When I open Thunderbird, I also want to see these and the mail
inside, and also be able to move mail from the inbox to these folders.
    * One of the accounts is gmail. In Account Setting tool, there is an option for synchronization. If there is no easier way, I can have mail for other account copied to gmail, and just syncronize gmail mail. For this, how will I copy my present folder structure to gmail. And how can I syncronize the local folders on the two devices?
    Thanks in advance.

The first awkwardness I see is that there's no obvious format in which to store messages remotely such that you can work with them in an email client. It may be possible to set the "Local Directory" option in the account in Thunderbird to point at some remote folder (DropBox comes to mind) but I have never tried this and I'd be nervous about what happens if connection can't be made, or if you happened to access it from two different places simultaneously. The other concern is that mail stores get big, quickly, and you'd be forever uploading and downloading large (multi gigabyte) files. Thunderbird stores what looks like a folder containing many separate messages as one big file, so there's no simple opportunity for incremental changes to be up/down loaded.
The whole idea of Local Folders in Thunderbird is to detach messages from servers, so they don't track what happens on servers. I say this to point out the distinction between files stored locally and permanently ("Local Folders"), versus cached copies of online files ("synchronized"). It's not safe to regard your synchronized folders as permanent.
So, synchronized folders on an IMAP server are "mirrored" in Thunderbird so you do have a local (albeit temporary and transient) copy of messages; this is done mainly to avoid repeatedly downloading messages if you re-read them, and it makes searching faster an more efficient. But these "synchronized" message track what's being done on the server, and so if they are deleted anywhere, all synchronized devices will at some point also see the deleted messages vanishing. (Unless you made a local copy in the Local Folders account.)
I use a gmail account pretty much as you have described; I copy or move messages to that account so they are visible in my phone, my tablet, my own laptop and my works computer. It's free, and it's "in the cloud"; the only reservation I have is its privacy. There are other providers (e.g. 1&1/gmx) who don't seem to have the data collection fetish that google thrives on.
It's fairly simple to create filters in Thunderbird to automatically copy messages to your "cloud account"; even better is to set up forwarding rules on the other accounts' servers, so your messages are automatically sent on and waiting for you when you next login, already in the cloud account.

  • Mail quits when i exit an email

When i'm reading an email and i want to go back to my in box by x-ing out(clicking red x) mail quits completely taking me back to my desk top. When this happens and i open mail up again it no longer defaults to my in box. I have to select a mailbox the inbox to see any emails. This only started happening a few days ago. Any thoughts?

I suppose that you could try trashing some files in the ~/Library folder. I hope that you have a backup of everything so that in case something goes wrong you can restore things.
Try deleting some of these files one at a time and see if there is any difference.
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
This will delete your mail configuration settings but not the actual mailboxes.
    ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book
This will delete your entire address book. Perhaps you can export all your contacts beforehand and later reimport them.
    Finally if nothing else works:
    ~/Library/Mail
This will delete all your offline emails.
I'm not a big advocate of deleting files to solve a problem without knowing which one is the actual cause of the problem because it takes too much effort to restore the original state of things, but in your case it seems that this would be the quickest solution. However I still cannot guarantee that it will have the desire effect, but I sure hope it does.
    Good luck.

  • Security Question: Is A Clean Install Enough To Erase Account Info?

    Hi,
I'm selling my eMac. I performed a clean-install of the OS to completely erase the hard drive. Will this be enough to prevent a hacker from accessing my bank account info, etc. that was in my Quicken?
    Stew

depends on whose looking i would say. If you can boot into the OS, why not run the secure erase empty space feature. It should overwrite the "blank space" 7 times with 0's. I think its in disk utility. This is probably enough.
But dont sue me if you identity gets stolen (just kidding)
