Mailbox Database Backup in Vhdx format
Dear All,
I am new to Backup world and that too for Exchange.
I have a Exchange server 2010 in visualized Environment installed on Windows server R2 Std. Edition.
I backed up one of the database using Windows Native Backup Utility. Backup went successfully ,logs got purged.
When I verified the again I figured out that there is no .edb file all backup files has vhdx extention.
is it normal?
TheAtulA
Yes. Windows native backup writes files to a VHDx, or a virtual disk. You can mount this disk (in Disk Manager) to find the files it has backed up. Did you want to access the raw EDB file from the backup for some reason?

Oracle Database Backup in ASCII format
Hi All,
I want to know,
1. Is it possible to have oracle database backup in ASCII format
Please let me know
Thanks
ArjunNo, it isn't, as a proper backup is a physical copy of a database.
As Oracle doesn't store data in ASCII, the backup also can't be ASCII.
Why are you asking this? What is the business requirement?

Mailbox database size before & after backup
Hi there
i recently made a similar thread and someone told me that i should do it here so here is my issue :
i've been assigned to do a specific report related to exchange and its backup
so what we want is a report that would give us the global size of all our mailbox databases before and after the backup ( even the size of the logs before and after)
(example : we have a mailbox database X: , we need to go inside the data folder, and retrieve the size of the .edb
then do the same thing with the logs, go inside the logs folder, and retrieve the logs size )
i was wondering if anyone ever managed to pull a script that does similar things, given the fact that i ve never worked with powershell and my knowledge is kinda limited in that area
ThanksHi Amassuo,
for finished scripts that do things, check out the
gallery. If you want to learn powershell (I might be biased, but I highly recommend it), check out the
learning center.
Regarding your specific issue, you can check the free space on a specific disk by running this powershell command:
Get-WmiObject win32_logicaldisk -Filter "DeviceID = 'C:'" | Select -ExpandProperty FreeSpace
Comparing before/after will get you the space differential (adapt drive letter in filter as needed).
Cheers and good luck with your script,
Fred

Get-Mailbox -Database and Format-Table questions
Hi,
I've written a script that will get the number of mailboxes on each database on our exchange server and then create a report and email it to everyone. This is the first script that I've ever wrote so I'm fumbling around and don't really know what I'm doing.
I want to learn though so any advice is welcome. It is working but it still doesn't look as nice as I'd like for it to and I was hoping someone could look at my code and tell me what I could do to make it better. Here is part of it and then below shows the
output text file as it is formatted. I'd like for it to be all one one table instead of each being a separate one but I don't know how to do that. I was reading that you can use $obj but when I was reading it I was completely lost about what was going on.
Thanks.
Get-Mailbox -Database DB0 | Group-Object -Property:Database | select name,count | Format-Table -Autosize > M:\Scripts\DBcountreport.txt
Get-Mailbox -Database DB1 | Group-Object -Property:Database | select name,count | Format-Table -Autosize -HideTableHeaders >> M:\Scripts\DBcountreport.txt
Get-Mailbox -Database DB2 | Group-Object -Property:Database | select name,count | Format-Table -Autosize -HideTableHeaders >> M:\Scripts\DBcountreport.txt
./DBcountreport.txt
Name Count
DB0 167
--- I want these spaces removed basically
DB1 167
DB2 174
DB3 169Hi Belthasar,
try this:
$temp = @(Get-Mailbox -Database DB0 | Group-Object -Property:Database | select name,count)
$temp += @(Get-Mailbox -Database DB1 | Group-Object -Property:Database | select name,count)
$temp += @(Get-Mailbox -Database DB2 | Group-Object -Property:Database | select name,count)
$temp += @(Get-Mailbox -Database DB3 | Group-Object -Property:Database | select name,count)
$temp | Format-Table -Autosize > "M:\Scripts\DBcountreport.txt"
What this does is not write 4 tables to a text file, but combines the four tables and then writes the resultant one to the text file.
Cheers,
Fred

Power outage Mailbox Database won't mount
Hello,
We have experienced a power outage, when we brought the server back the Mailbox Database wouldn't mount.
After that i ran Eseutil /mh and was on dirty shutdown, the i did /r and finally /p
Database is now on Clean shutdown state but still doesn't mount, error in event viewer:
failed. Error: The database action failed. Error: Operation failed with message: MapiExceptionCallFailed: Unable to mount database. First time dealing with this problem, have i missed something?I'm still unable to mount the Database, i've moved the logs out of the path and tried to mount with the same error.

Restoring deleted emails from a mailbox database edb file.
hello all.
i have done some reading up on this subject and also covered it off in my MCSA 70-341 training. ( some time ago)
i dont deal with the exchange server often and would like to be clear before i delve into the exchange server.
a user has lost some emails, and they don't appear to be recoverable as there not in the recover deleted items either within outlook.
i cant find any trace of them on the exchange server.
sadly (1/2 my fault) the previous exchange admin never had audit logging or single item retention enabled on the mailbox so i am finding it hard to find much in the way of information to point me to the cause of the problem or recover the emails
its their "sent items" folder and oddly its only the last 2 years worth of sent items that are gone as from 2012 previous are still there
i do have an up-to-date full database backup that is currently downloading off our backup system.
i am forgetting the best method to process the recovery, can anyone point me to a guide or give me a few steps on what to do?
it is only the emails form the sent items that need to be recovered so i am thinking i need some sort of granular restore method??
many thanks

HI all,
I ran into a problem with one of the servers in my DAG. Due to a backup failure, the log partition filled up and the Exchange database went offline on this particular server. The DAG continued to function on the other server. So this particular
DB01 had only some test accounts in it so I removed the database copy. Unfortunately the removal must not have completed correctly.
After recovering the needed space in the partition, I tried to recopy the database and it failed. So I deleted the entire database from the active server and it successfully removed it from the active server. Now on both the servers the database
is not showing, however I'm receiving the error below which indicates to me that the service still thinks the database exists. I am also getting event 4113 Database redundancy health check failed for the database copy as it shows there is only one copy
of the database (failed redundancy) but there should be zero copies.
This database no longer exists in AD as I have verified this with ADSI so it must have something on the exchange server that is still telling the service the database exists.
Can you point me to the location to clean this up?

</Event>Hi
This error occurs because the MailboxReplicationService (MRS) currently caches Mailbox Database information past the lifetime of some databases.
Restarting the service will clear the cache.
Maybe it is the simplest way to solve it.
If it doesn’t work, you can try cmd to check it.
Get-MailboxDatabase : Can you find the database which you delete?

Best practice for default location of mailbox database(s) / logs
Hello,
I don't recall seeing any options during the Exchange 2013 install, to specify an alternate location for either the mailbox database or log files. I've reviewed the commands for moving the mailbox databases, but before reviewing the options for setting a
location for the log files, I thought it best to see whether it's still advised to separate log/mailbox databases away from the OS, with our Exchange server being a virtualised instance?
Also, I'm assuming that Exchange still requires the usual backup of transaction logs, for them to be cleared?
Many thanks.Hi JH,
here is a link to storage options and requirements for the Mailbox server :
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee832792(v=exchg.150).aspx
By default when installing New Exchange server With mailbox role,it will create default database and log path.
Recomended is to have Database and Log files on seperate disks.You will have to attache those disk first,then you can create New database using ECP.
Please look at my Gallery With full guide on how to setup New Exchange server.
http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Install-Exchange-server-b5cce9e4
Also for future use you might need to clean up log files to free up Space on Your Exchange server:

Hope this helps

Overview of the architecture
We have Site (Primary & DR)
2 Database copies in primary site and 1 Database on the DR site (Primary site 2 copies one mounted and second healthy & on the DR site one healthy copy of Database)
Recently Due to Network Problem the DR copy got in to the easyncronous state and was removed from the DAG.
As company does not want the downtime we have followed the below steps to Restore Database at DR site.
1)Stopped the backup to Not trucate the log file
2)Took Full backup and in the restore mode we shipped the full backup to the DR site.
3)As the above process needs 2 days, manually copied the some Logs to the DR site (IN some drive as much possible to reduce seed time)
4)Added the mailbox database of the DR site back in the DAG as its seeds from the start, we manually suspend the process post the Database folder hierrachy gets created
5)Added the EDB and logs files in the recently created folders
6)Resumed the Database seed, so only the remaining logs were copied and seeded from primary site to DR site, In some hours DR site databse became healhty with no copy queue and replay queue.
7)trucated the logs which synced using DAG
Now Dag has copies as initial setup but the since we followed the above process the primary site healthy copy is acting as the seed-source and logs not truncating for the database
When restarts the Replication services on the Primary site server with healthy the state becomes healthy but again after some time it becomes seed- source.
Wanted to know when DR site copy is in healthy state why its acting as a seed-source continueously
Need Experts advice in manage Database copies in healthy state...
Thanks in AdvanceHi,
Based on your description, sometimes the content index state of passive database copy in primary site is healthy, but sometimes the state is crawling.
You can use the following command to reseed the catalog only to check result.
Update-MailboxDatabaseCopy -Identity Database -SourceServer EX -CatalogOnly

Belinda Ma

Hi,
I have DAG enabled Exchange Server 2010 installed with three mailbox databases having sizes 282GB,162GB and 129GB respectively. I have started with a total of 250GB in 2010 and now it has reached a size more than 650GB.
It has become very difficult to take the backup of such huge database files now and restoring it in case of a DR.
Presently I have not enabled online archiving in any of these mailboxes mainly because most of the PCs are installed with outlook 2007 which doesn't show online archive.Of course OWA is another candidate to see those mails.
Please suggest a best practice to reduce the size of these mailbox databases without losing any of the mails.
Thanks
ThomasAs mentioned above, Exchange database files do not shrink.
If you do a defrag, then since you have copies of this DB in the DAG then you have to reseed. take a look at this

I have had several failed backups using Symantec Endpoint protection of my exchange server, currently the issue stems from the transaction logs being corrupt because the database log files were completely cleared to make sure the exchange server continued
to have space and wouldn't crash. The current solution I would like to try is to do a reseed of the mailbox database on the server that is causing the issue, however I want to know if anything can go wrong from running the command Update-MailboxDatabaseCopy

MahmoudDear Mahmoud,
In the SMTP server settings below you need to replace with your HUB server FQDN if its 2010 or Mailbox server FQDN if its 2013 and after that i think it should work.
<SMTPServer>webmail.domain.com</SMTPServer>

Daily database backup runnig on RAC 10.2.0.3 with two Solaris nodes & ASM
Hello,
I'm confused about making daily incremental RMAN backup of a database runnig on Oracle RAC 10.2.0.3 on two Solaris nodes and ASM.
Databases cannot be stopped for backup and point in time recovery is needed.
Please correct me if I am doing wrong:
1) Backup must be Weekly database Level 0 and Daily database Level 1 is appropriate.
2) Is best to use a Flash Recovery Area (FRA) - I've setup one on a separate ASM volume. I have enough space to do the backup on FRA.
3) I am confused about the number channels I need to use. Do I need to use separate RMAN backup channels for each node or I can just leave the default:
CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 1 BACKUP TYPE TO BACKUPSET; # default
4) Below are the RMAN scripts I plan to use for
- Weekly database backup Level 0:
#!/usr/bin/ksh
echo BACKUP FULL: $ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target / nocatalog log ${LOGFILE} append
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target / nocatalog log ${LOGFILE} append << eof
run {
backup incremental level 0 database TAG bkp_level0_200906010;
SQL 'alter system archive log current';
backup archivelog all;
delete noprompt obsolete;
exit;
eof
- Daily database backup Level 1:
#!/usr/bin/ksh
echo BACKUP INCREMENTAL: $ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target / nocatalog log ${LOGFILE} append
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target / nocatalog log ${LOGFILE} append << eof
run {
backup incremental level 1 database TAG bkp_level1_20090611;
SQL 'alter system archive log current';
backup archivelog all;
delete noprompt obsolete;
exit;
eof
I'm I doing things wrong?Show also the parameter I have set for RMAN:
node1:oracle$ rman target /
Recovery Manager: Release 10.2.0.3.0 - Production on Tue Jun 9 23:46:05 2009

Database backup problem in DB13
Dear All,
<b>When we take backup from the command prompt using Brbackup or Brarchive it executes the backup process successfully, but when I schedule the same thing in the DBA calendar it shows that job finished but it actually does not take the backup. I have given all parameter required for the backup in the DBA calendar like eg, the scheduled time, the tape generic name, archive type.</b>
Can anybody guide what is going wrong ...because of that I am not able to schedule backup using DB13 tcode.
At present I am using Brtools( Brbackup) to take the backup.
Thanks in adv.

Cannot add mailbox database copy to DR site - .edb file not getting created
I have a DR site setup that I want copies of 4 of my mailbox databases. 3 of the mailbox databases copied over successfully but the last and largest one which is really not that large 69Gbs keeps failing when i Update the database copy. Seems
to not be creating the .edb file. Is there another way to get the .edb file over to the server, possibly manually copying it then doing and update database copy? I have my backups turned off on all the servers that have the mailbox role on it now
thinking that was causing some issues with the database copy? Any suggestions is appreciated, thanks.
Michael DuhonYes manually copy the edb file and paste them in the DR server . Then try to update with for the incremental of database copy. Verify the database is clean shutdown that you are moving to the DR site.
What error message it throws when you performing update the database copy
