MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-85J Problem, help appreciated

I have been trying to burn an I Movie through I DVD on the Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J. The program seems to work correctly until right at the last minute. The burning process gets to Multiplexing and burning and suddenly the disc ejects and says done. The disc when reinserted still is blank. I am fairly new at this and was wondering if I am doing something wrong or is their a problem with my drive? Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I too am having a similar problem. Whenever I burn a Memorex DVD-R through my drive, SimplyBurns stops the operation immediately, saying "disc not writable." I read somewhere that resetting PRAM fixes some problems; that didn't work. Furthermore, here is what System Profiler reports:
MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J:

  • Issues with Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J

I have a (pre Intel) 20" screen iMac (PPC) with isight. My OS is 10.5.8. I purchased the computer in 2006 and it came with the Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J super drive. I used it frequently but not excessively, and 3 years later it quit burning. I took it to an Apple certified repair center  in 2009 and they installed a new one (same type). I have used it  some over the past years and now it is not working. I have read the old articles (301551 and 25402) on optical and disc drive burning and write speeds and have tried all of their suggestions, including different speeds and nothing seems to work. I have tried both TDK and Memorex 80min. 52X discs. Here is what happens: I put in the disc, then go to burn the disc. I see a gray bar that says Preparing Disc...I see the songs above the bar as they load up. Then the bar says "Burning disc- initializing"..candy stripe bar and then gray bar...this seems to go quickly...then I see burning disc - finishing with a solid gray bar..the finishing does not last long and then the disc ejects.
Then I see a message that says" the attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry".  What are the problems with this Super Drive?!!!!! Perhaps, I need to get an external burner. I have checked to see what the Apple Store offers and found a LaCie. Do any of you have the LaCie 22xd2DVD+RW with LightScribe external burner? Is it working for you?
Do you have any suggestions for another type of external burner? DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR FIXING MY MATSHITA, before I spend a hundred bucks.

  • IMac Intel 24" with MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-85J

    HELP...!
My drive will recognize some CD's and DVD's that my Macbook Pro 17" will read all
of them and my iMac will only read or mount a small portion of them,
I find if I write on a CD, DVD with a CD/DVD Marker Pen the iMac will not
Read or mount the disc, when I open Toast 8.1 and go to Recorder: Disc Info.
It tells all about the disc, and the disc isn't mounted on my desktop though ?
I've read where this is a major issue and some said to go out and buy a
external DVD Burner/Drive I don't think so I paid Apple for this one
And I expect it to work. I have the Apple Care Plan, but I'm disabled and at this
point can't drive to go to take the iMac in for service
?? Will come out to me ???

  • Optimizing dvd playback quality (macroblocking problems)- HELP!

Nothing is quite so frustrating as spending countless hours editing, encoding, and authoring a DVD and then discovering that the video has playback issues (macroblocking, digital artifacting, sometimes so serious it halts playback altogether) at some point in the stream.
I feel sure others must have some idea what I'm talking about, and yet I haven't found a thread on this forum or any other that addresses what is really the root cause here. As I figure it, there are a number of factors (variables) at work:
    1. the media itself
    2. the software used to create the disc (in my case DVDSP 4.0/Compressor usually at the "Best" quality encoding)
    3. the hardware used to burn the disc (in my case the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-815 superdrive in my powerbook)
    4. the DVD player used for playback
In my experience, a disc might do fine on one player but then have significant playback issues on another. On one occasion I even saw playback perfectly through an hour of video, and then the next day on the same player and the same DVD I got significant macroblocking through parts of it.
What gives!? Are there some DVD-R media that are way better than others? Or do I need to invest in a better drive to burn them? Or is this just the growing pains of emerging technology? Is there some other thread anywhere in cyberspace that addresses this issue?

    Hi John
So you're saying that your mpegs are clean and clear of any macro blocking, and this is only introducted once you burn to DVD, and then only on some players, but also a disc that played fine one day on a deck, plays back bad the next day on the same deck.
Man, you've got some serious gremlins at work in your office. Before you pull your system apart, chack you mpegs again. If you're using Compressor 2 with any of the VBR presets you're going to get macro blocking because C2's VBR is not very good - I've not had one successful mpeg out of it. If your project is under 1hr try CBR at 7.5Mbps, that's been working fine for me.
Now, are you encoding your audio to .ac3, or .aiff. If you're using .aiff you might be hitting wall with your bitrate. Your .aiff will have a bitrate of 1.5Mbps, and if your using using a high max bitrate on your vision and you get a bitrate spike which Compressor is also known for then you could be blowing your bit budget (max of 9.8Mbps for vision and audio together), which could result in stuttered playback and freezes.
Next, are you burning out of DVDSP or are you using Toast. Some users report problems burning at higher than 2x speed (personally I burn at the limit of the media and haven't had a problem). As you can't control the burn speed out of DVDSP you might want to try just building in DVDSP and burning in toast at a low speed.
If you're burning from data on an external FW drive try moving it to the HD and try it again.
Try a few different brands of media. Keep it clean and out of the sun.
That's about all I can tell you at the moment - these are all the obvious things , maybe somone else can chime in with some more obscure causes.
    Cheers
    B

  • Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J DVD burning problems - drive going bad? replacement?

I purchased a couple spindles of TDK DVD+R DL discs from Newegg last week; got them yesterday and stuck one in my iMac to start burning some of this stuff I've got backed up (using Toast 10), and ran into a problem... it failed almost immediately with a "medium error."
I tried Disk Utility and it quit in a similar fashion on several discs, never actually burning anything to them.
I've stuck with TDK in the past because they seemed to be the most compatible, but now I was thinking that maybe they changed something in the manufacturing process that caused them to not work anymore.
Fortunately, I have access to a pretty new MacBook and tried using the discs in there, and they worked just fine with the same data and the same version of Toast.
About an hour ago, I pulled out a stack of TDK single-layer DVDs I bought a few months ago (and that worked with no issues in my iMac at that time), and slipped one into my iMac to burn a smaller set of files, and it failed in exactly the same way as the DL discs did yesterday.
Since then, I've been searching everywhere for information on this (including firmware updates and a place to buy a replacement drive) and found very little.
What I did find suggests that the drive might be going bad (or at the very least choked with dust).
I can't find anything solid on what drive I could buy to replace it myself, though.
And I'm not very optimistic about taking it to the Genius Bar, as I don't have AppleCare and it sounds like they would just put in an equally failure-prone Matshita drive that'll be dead within a year.
I'll try cleaning it as soon as I can locate one of those brush discs and see if that helps.
I've also noticed that it will occasionally stop mounting discs until after a restart.

I have a 24" iMac, Approx 2 Years Old, Mine was having the same problems as yours, I had Memorex DL DVD + R and half the time it would spit them back out and the other half it would fail at 50%, when before it would read and write fine. So I figured it was hardware when i was having the same problem on the boot camp side. So two days ago I took it in to the apple store in plano, they looked at it, said they'd put a new drive in, And it was free thanks to the apple care plan I had with it. Just picked it up a few hours ago and I just burned a DL DVD and it worked. So my suggestion is visit your apple store and maybe they'll replace it, ive heard amounts as high as $450 for replacements without the protection plan, maybe you could go firewire/usb external drive?
By the way, I can't remember what drive I had on my machine, wanna say it started with an "O", but they replaced it with a Pioneer, very quiet and seems fast.
    Good Luck

  • MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J

    Dear Readers,
I have 1 year old MacBook Pro, I rarely use the optical drive. Now that i want to burn a CD, DVD or DL DVD using Roxio Titanium 9 i get errors.
    One of those errors was:
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
    Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03
After that i get a "The disc failed to be written" message.
I tried Imation & Sony media still i got the same error.
Is there a way to know if this is a software or hardware fault?
    Appreciate your help.

You could try Verbatim discs, they seem to be the most compatible blanks. Have you managed to successfully burn even one disc? If you haven't try repairing permissions and/or running the hardware test from your install discs. If this doesn't improve your situation call Applecare. If, however you have managed to burn some discs all Applecare will offer is the usual run through of tests. We have three machines with Matshita drives in them and all of them are so temperamental that we now use external Pioneer firewire burners. The Matshita drive on the MBP I am using now has a 90% success rate with burning cdrs with iTunes but an equal rate of failures when burning dvdrs and I've given up trying to fathom out why this is. The Pioneers have 100% success rate of burning anything we have chucked at them and we have been using them for 9 months now. There are plenty of reports on the web of the Matshita drive's performance failures, here's one recent thread.
Hopefully the use of Verbatim blanks and repairing permissions will solve your woes.

  • Moving iTunes Problem(help appreciated)

Ok. My computer's disk space was almost full, so I bought an external hard drive and simply cut and pasted the iTunes folder on my computer. I then simply added all the files(from the external hard drive) into iTunes. The problem is that it's registering this library as a new one and I have to erase and sync. Is there anyway to undo what I've done? Help is much appreciated !!

  • A Bit of an Odd Problem (Help Appreciated)

Or at least I assume this is the problem...
I have windows 8 and Skype came as an app on my laptop; that's fine, it worked really well. But several weeks ago I bought a Student edition of MS Office 365 and installed it on my laptop, and the package said that a skype account was needed (or something like that, I think because you needed a microsoft account), and I was like "Okay that's fine".
When activing Office account it required a microsoft sign in, and while trying to sign in, what I thought was my account didn't work so I though that I was mistaken (didn't make the connection between MS and Skype at that moment) and that I didn't have one. Now the Student edition only works if you prove you're a student,  so I used my college email when signing up for a microsoft account.
And next thing I know my skype is screwed up. Not just that it won't connect, but it won't call anyone, I can't answer incoming calls, and (going by the sounds) it doesn't know whether I'm signed on or trying to call someone.
I think the problem is that it's registering two different accounts and doesn't know which one to go with - the one already set up on the laptop, or the one MS Office 365 is supposed to be signed in?
Does anyone have any suggestions for what I should do? I'm afraid of uninstalling it incase that messes up my other apps (since this laptop came with Skype installed as an app), even if I re-installed it. I was also thinking about leaving it and just not touching it, while installing Skype on the desktop... but how much confusion could that cause?
I could really use some help with this.

you need to contact skype support (this is just a user forum)
log on to the skype webpage on a computer
    klick help
    scroll down
klick "get more help" almost at the bottom
there you'll find how to get in touch with them

  • Color Saturation Problem (help appreciated!)

    Hi.
I'm in Spain and making DVD's from footage shot on NTSC cameras (a bad idea in the first place, I know).
At the moment I have no way of verifying my results on an NTSC tv, so.... My question is that the majority (but strangely, not quite all) of the DVD's I've produced, when watched on a normal PAL television, have EXTREMELY over-saturated colors. They are so saturated that they're flattened and bleedy so that subtle textures aren't discernible.
Aside from that, the image appears stuttery and jumpy. This makes sense to me, being an NTSC DVD on a PAL tv, but should the COLORS be so drastically affected also?
I've done five project here. 4 of them look stuttery and with bad colors, but 1 of them looks fine. This is the mystery. Is there some encoding setting that I'm overlooking that can reduce the problem?? Is this a normal symptom of NTSC seen on PAL equipment?
I've tried on various different PAL tv's and players. no change.
(this problem occurs with both 24p and regular NTSC footage. I use DVDSP4 and FCP4)
    THanks for your time!!

    any ideas anyone? thanks

So, now we're sure the connection is broken. Let's analyze the problem this way.
There are 3 components in this connection:
    1.The 2520's console port
    2.rollover cable
    3.The 2509's line ports
If one of the above components have any problem, it will cause a broken connection.
First let's check the 2520's console port. Can you login to the 2520 by directly conecting the console port to your PC? If so, this can be excluded from being a probable cause.
Second, change the rollover cable. Is it improved then? If so, the rollover cable you were using is bad. If not, the rollover cable can be likely excluded from being the probable cause.(One possibility is that all the rollver you have are bad, but not likely)
Third, plug your rollover cable to line 2, then type "telnet 10.101.1.1 2002", and see whether you can login to the 2520. If not, repeat the process on line 3, line4 ,...,and line 8.
If all the 8 lines cannot be used, there is the last chance. Remember your aux port? It's your line 9. Before repeat the above process, add some command lines in your confiuration:
    line aux 0
    no exec
    transport preffered telnet
    then type "telnet 10.101.1.1 2009
    Good lucks

  • Very unusual LCD display problem, help appreciated

First post, I want to thank anyone who can help me in advance. I just took over my sister's MBP Unibody, and she has been having an issue where there is about a 1.5 inch wide strip of complete distortion on the left hand side of the screen. Everything in that strip is completely color distorted with constant screen tearing and flickering. I suspect there is something wrong with a wire in the lcd screen, as this problem only starts after using the computer for 15 minutes, and goes away initially by tapping the screen or adjusting the screen. After about half an hour of use however, it does not go away. In a completely unrelated incident, the glass panel cracked yesterday (This problem has been going on for about a month and a half), and i ordered a replacement, so I will be "under the hood" on Thursday. If anyone has any recommendations of what I might do to try to fix this, I would greatly appreciate it.
    3 pictures of my screen:
    http://i771.photobucket.com/albums/xx356/basicallydylan/IMG_0179.jpg

Well its 70 dollars vs 600 dollars and it wasn't me who bought the applecare. And I would gladly bring it in to an apple technician instead, however my only problem with that is its not like they can just take off the glass, take a look at it and then tell me how much it costs. i mean the glass is shattered, you take it off and its going to be in pieces. Likewise, they very well might say that they can't do anything about it because the broken glass is clearly accidental damage and immediately attribute it to the lcd problem even though it has nothing to do with it. If the glass wasn't broken, I would never have even posted and immediately taken it to the apple store. Please, tell me I'm wrong and I will take it to them right away to tell me exactly why the screen is the way it is, and it will probably be covered seeing how it started out of no where. My understanding of apples policy however is that with the glass cracked as it is, they will have no choice but to immediately charge me for a full repair. But like I said, if I'm wrong please tell me and I'll take it in tomorrow

  • ERROR on  MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-85J

this what i get when i was finishing a movie on toast 9
    The Drive reported an error:
    sense key = hardware error
    sense code = 0x09,0x01
    Tracking Servo failure
and on idvd it said an error with drive too !

You're about to equate a solution to your problem with voodoo, but this actually worked for me. I was getting the same drive errors and tried everything short of replacement, but the following trick worked:
    open system preferences.
    go to international
under languages: drag any of the other languages to the top, then drag english back to the top.
make sure "order for sorted lists" is set to enlish
make sure "work break" is set to english(united states, computer)
    then restart
Yes, it sounds stupid but what do you have to lose.
    Good luck

  • After Mountain lion upgrade MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-85J  does not recognize disk

I just installed Mountain Lion on an older MacBookPro,after install my DVD is no longer listed. when I insert a program disk it gives me a message that the disk is blank. does anyone know why this is

Welcome to Discussions - You have posted in the PPC iMac forum, I'll ask that your post be moved to the intel Forum. iMacs are notoriously picky about the media you use, one brand might work perfectly, another not. I use Phillips and TDKs, so you might simply have had a dud disk. Have you tried another TDK disk from the same batch? Or, as suggested above, another brand?

  • Difficult problem, help appreciated.

    Hi,
    I have the following tables:
    1.assessments
    2.meters
    3.meter_readings
    assessment : meters = 1:M
    meters : meter_readings = 1:M
Now, I need to calculate "meter usage" which is a sum of a usage field in meter_readings for certain period for each meter, and "assessment usage", which is the sum of those "meter usages" for the each assessment.
So I would like to have something like:
    assess_num meter max_date m_usage a_usage
    1 1A 1/1/00 100 160
    1B 3/1/00 50 160
    1C 4/1/00 10 160
    2 2A 5/1/00 12 32
    2B 6/1/00 20 32
Now, in disco admin, I have done the following:
    1. On the meter readings folder, created
    - max date on date item
    2. Joined assessments folder with meters folder based on meter ID.
These 2 steps will give me everything up to meter_usage.
I'm wondering how I can get the assessment usage. I tried using a function that takes in assessment number in the workbook, but it altered the meter_usage figures and gives unexpected/wrong assessment_usage figures whenever the function is used.

I figured out a work around but it would be nice to display GROUP Calendars via anonymous. The workaround is to create a calid (useranem) for every calendar you want to group together. Then on ww command line you can call or calids that you want grouped and it will group them into one calendar ie. http://mycalendar.com/command.shtml?calid=username1;username2;userndame3;username4&view=weekview

    Anybody have any ideas?
    Thanks.

Well, the simplest way to do this would be:
    public class MyClass extends HttpServlet {
      public void doGet(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) {
           String buttonName = request.getParameter("myButtonRequestVariable");
           if ("update".equals(buttonName)) {
               request.getRequestDispatcher("UpdateToCompAccount.jhtml").
                             forward(request, response)
             } else if ("delete".equals(buttonName)) {
                  request.getRequestDispatcher("DeleteCompAccount.jhtml").
                            forward(request, response)
             } else {
                  request.getRequestDispatcher("ErrorPage.jhtml").
                      forward(request, response)
      public void doPost(HttpServletRequest request,
} But that can get unwieldy if you've loads of buttons. Have you studied the concept of Model View Controller (MVC)?
