Messages regularly hangs entire OS

My wife and I have almost identical machines: Mid 2009 MBP running 10.8.2. Several times a week, the Messages app causes the entire OS to hang until we force quit it. The second I force quit, everything is back to normal. I'm having trouble googling this because the word "messages" often brings up a discussion about the Mail app. I'm posting the errors here in case anyone can make heads or tails of it.

Hi,
That extended log just is too much and does not make sense.
One thing I did spot.
Parent:          launchd [139]
PID:             97262
Event:           hang
From very early in the log (the Messages bit)
It list the Process ID as 97262
That was by no means the highest number I saw when skipping through (before I lost the will to live)
Example
Process:         WebKitPluginAgent [97846]
Path:            /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/WebKitPluginAgent
I have Firefox, Messages app, Mail, Skitch and the Activity Monitor open and the Activity Monitor tell me the highest PID is only 4860
I launched iTunes and it went to 4728 with TuneUp starting up as well.
It would seem that you have many apps and items running and then Time Machine want to Back Up (that's in the Log) and then you seem to be doing something with Messages (it pops up first).
The Activity Monitor may give clues in both the CPU button at the bottom and the CPU column in addition to the list of PIDs about how much is generally running.

    Hi,
Please explain what you mean by "hang-ups"?
What type of application causes the "hang-ups"?
Did you make any hardware changes to your PC?
Did you do a clean Window 7 installation or just used the HP recovery disks?

  • How do I delete a message or an entire conversation in iMessage?

How do I delete a message or an entire conversation in iMessage?  I have tried "close conversation" and "clear transcript" in iMessage as well as deleting on the texts on my iPhone.
When I use "clear transcript", the conversation clears.  If I open another conversation with that same person, the entire deleted conversation reappears.
When I clear the conversation on the iPhone, nothing happens in iMessage, so I know that is not the correct approach.
So, does anyone know what to do?
    Thank you!

    Hi,
There are two things going on here.  (And the second is not dependant on the first)
The first is that Message Beta now stores all Chats by default and it cannot be changed.  (It was optional in iChat)
By Default this is in ~/Documents/iChats  (By date)
Separate from this the Messages Sync process seems to be continuously "On" meaning that any conversation is re-synced even if deleted in ~/Documents/iChats or cleared as a Current Chat (Using the small X in the name part of the Message window) or and Clearing the Transcripts and even deleting it on the Phone or iPad.
There is no way to change this behaviour currently as has already been discussed.
I actually have a Migrated User Account that contains old iChat transcripts that go back to 2004.
With some chats it is useful to have the History pop up  (How big you have the window dictates how much History shows).
I find it useful as some people come back to me literally years later to ask follow up questions.

  • CMSDK regularly hangs

    cmsdk 90422
    windows 2003 server
cmsdk regularly hangs with no meaningful errors in the logs around the time of the hangs, any errors that are in there can be ignored as I can access successfully when they are there. When it hangs I get a 503 error in the browser.
ifsctl status shows all relevant processes are up.
I need to opmn stopall, ifsctl stop, opmn startall, ifsctl start to get it back again.
metalink no answers, theyre asking me to do thread dumps on the hung cmsdk java pid but the thread dump utlilty aint working. Ive tried sendsignal and thdump
Ive 2 other environments with cmsdk working fine. software versions same. anyone came across this before, there 2 or 3 peice of software that could b causing conflict on this server which Im going to disable and see if issue repeats but hoping someones seen it before.
no firewall between cmsdk and db.

I would try to go through the following:
    1. Check OS log files (on Windows Server - event logs)
    2. Check database alert log file with trc files whether you see anything suspicious
    3. Check all log files in .../opmn/logs (it can be OC4J causing the issue)
    4. Search for sqlnet.log files to find any issue in them
If you find anything, let us know.

  • JDev 10.1.2 - JSF 1.1_02 - error hangs entire application

    Hi,
I'm building my first JSF application and an issue has arisen during testing which has us all stumped! Whenever an error occurs for a particular user, the entire application then falls over and all other users then see (different) error messages too.
Let me try to describe the scenario in detail.
    1. 10 users are using the main page of the application quite happily.
    2. Another user logs in and visits a different page in the same application. This page contains a bug.
    3. The application serves the error page to this user as an unhandled exception was thrown when processing the request.
    4. The other 10 users also get the error page even though they have not visited the buggy page! The application has fallen over and requires the container to be restarted.
Steps 1-3 are obvious, but I don't understand step 4 - why should the application fail to continue serving bug-free pages to all other users? Is this the expected behaviour for JSF applications? (Other platforms I've used don't behave this way.)
I can easily replicate this issue by introducing a typo to a component's EL binding. The initial error message is
javax.servlet.jsp.JspException: Error getting property 'thisisatypo' from bean of type com.mypackage.MyBeanAll other users then see a secondary error message:
java.lang.IndexOutOfBoundsExceptionOther applications on the app server are not affected.
Is there a way to configure or recode the application to better handle exceptions so that the application itself doesn't hang and other users can continue to use it? Is it a threading issue? Or is this an issue with the application server, which requires reconfiguration to fix it?
A thread on Sun's JSF forum mentions a similar issue, but no-one has answered it: http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=881&threadID=5049367
    My environment:
    JSF: v1.1_02 (Sun JSF RI)
    IDE: JDeveloper 10.1.2.3.0
    Java: 1.4.2_06
App Server: Oracle App Server 10g (OC4J 9.0.4.0.0)
(Upgrading to more recent versions of JSF or application server are not options at the moment - my organisation has already scheduled upgrades sometime within the next 12 months or so, but I cannot bring them forward!)

Hi Frank, thanks for your reply.
I did indeed manually configure JSF for JDev 10.1.2 & Oracle App Server 10g (OC4J 9.0.4), following the instructions provided by Oracle at [http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/howtos/10g/jsf_howto/jsf.html|http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/howtos/10g/jsf_howto/jsf.html]
I have just spent some time porting my application to JDev 10.1.3 & OC4J 10.1.3, as you suggest, and I can confirm that the issue does not appear using this platform.
However, my organisation does not have this version of Oracle App Server in production. As I indicated in my first post, an upgrade from 9.0.4 to a newer version (tbc) should occur sometime in the next 12 months, but we undertook this project on the basis that JSF would work on Oracle App Server 10g (OC4J 9.0.4), as per the "how to" above.
If this is not the correct forum to pursue this issue, where, or with whom, should I?
    Many thanks,

Hi BalusC, thanks for your response!
I am using try...catch blocks around my business & database code and I am already using an errorpage. My question is not so much "how to make errors more user friendly" as "how do I prevent the application producing errors for all users when a single user encounters a bug?"
I'm having difficulty in clearly explaining my issue, probably as I don't understand the JSF architecture sufficiently!
Let try to describe the scenario.
    1. 10 users are using the main page of the application quite happily.
    2. Another user logs in and visits a different page in the same application. This page contains a bug.

Steps 1-3 are obvious, but I don't understand step 4 - why should the application fail to continue serving bug-free pages to all other users? Is this the expected behaviour for JSF applications? (Other platforms I've used don't behave this way.)
When this app goes to production there will be 800+ users. Although I hope to have eliminated most bugs by then, I don't want the entire user base blocked from the app when a single error occurs for a single user.
If you know what I might have done wrong or what I'm missing, please let me know!
    Thanks.

  • SQLITE_ERROR message; Aperture hangs

Getting the following error message (visible in Console) regularly now. I recently imported a large batch of photos (over 1,500) and edited many of them. Aperture would periodically crash and hang while editing. Now I've finally finished the editing and am backing up to a vault; Aperture appears to have hung part way through the backup and for the last three hours has been regularly reporting the following (every ten seconds):
6/14/10 10:11:09 AM Aperture[172] NSExceptionHandler has recorded the following exception:
    SQLITE_ERROR -- sqlite3_step
    Stack trace: 0x7fff844eaa2c 0x7fff8863f0f3 0x7fff887bab47 0x7fff887baad4 0x10042facc 0x10026d268 0x10047f540 0x100479f30 0x100237688 0x100234b70 0x10146ea77 0x10147a5d1 0x101475170 0x101473579 0x7fff83458ead 0x7fff842308b6 0x7fff84230769

You may want to cancel the Vault operation, quit Aperture, restart Aperture while holding down the OPTION and COMMAND keys, and selecting the options sequentially to Repair Permissions, Repair the Database and Rebuild the Databsae (won’t take as long as it sounds). Hope then all goes well. If you didn’t get everything imported, import again but check the box “do not import duplicates on the right side. Good luck.

  • Sync of iPad (1) to iTunes after iOS5 upgrade, getting "waiting for items to copy" message that hangs sync, lasts forever

I've seen this same problem in other posts, but the solutions seems suspect to me. People are seeing this on both Mac and Windows syncs. The "data" that is being sync'd seems to change for each person, and in fact is different each time I try. Sometimes it is "data" that is being sync'd, sometimes it is "Genius Data", sometimes something else. The common problem across platforms is that somewhere in the iPad sync process it gets "stuck" with the message "Waiting for items to copy". In my case, I ran this overnight -- for over 12 hours -- and the problem did not resolve.
Here is my situation: iPad1, just upgraded to iOS5. MacBook Pro just upgraded to 10.7.2. itunes 10.5. When I connect the iPad, iTunes does a synchronization automatically and seems to succeed up to the last step, in my case 8 of 8. Then, it "hangs" during synchronization. Sometimes it says it is Syncing Genius Data, sometimes it says something different. But, it always says "Waiting for items to copy" and then sits forever.
To terminate this I just eject the iPad and things seem to be working okay, but it is troublesome that the sync does not complete normally.

    Hi TD,
You solved my problem awhile ago and I didn't post a thank here.  So thank you!  I was having a problem with a PDF that kept rechecking itself.  It was not the User guide.  Anyway, I posted your solution on another discussion board and it has solved the issue for several people. Here's the link. My post is on the last page.  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3391000

  • FF hangs entire PC apparently loading Flash content. I have 3.6.6 and latest Flash. Computer is totally locked for 45 seconds. Is this really the intent?

I have FF 3.6.6 and Flash 10.1. When I enter a site the entire computer hangs. The mouse operates but I cannot go to another site, leave the browser or even bring up the Task Manager. The entire PC is hung. This lasts 45 seconds of course and then everything is fine. Is this how the plugin containment code is really supposed to work?
== URL of affected sites ==
    http://www.aol.com

Make sure that you allow the plugin-container process access to internet.
You can set the prefs dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.* to false on the about:config page to disable the plugin-container process to see if that helps.
    dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npctrl.dll (Silverlight)
    dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npqtplugin.dll (QuickTime)
    dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npswf32.dll (Flash)
To open the ''about:config'' page, type '''about:config''' in the location (address) bar and press the Enter key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.

  • Modal message popup hangs parallel model in Teststand 4?

    Hi:
I'm having a problem using the 'Make Modal' option on message popups. It is hanging the user interface.
    Here is what I've done:
    * created a sequence with just a message popup in it (using Teststand 4.0 editor)
    * set the popup to be modal
    * set the sequence to use the parallel model
    * recompiled Full Featured CVI User interface for teststand 4.0 (using CVI 8.0.1)
    * run sequence in the recompiled user interface
    * popup is displayed
    * after acknowledging the popup, the popup and the user interface freeze
If I change the sequence to use the batch model, everything works.
If I don't recompile the user interface project that came with Teststand and just run the exe, everything works.
What am I missing? Sequence file attached.
    Thanks,
    Dave

    Hi dseel,
After I copied over your version of modelsupport2.dll, I see the attached error message for every test socket, basically saying that TestStand can't find a certain function in modelsupport2.dll.
What modifications did you make to the dll?
One thing though, I notice the same error message even with the Simple OI... Where are you putting modelsupport2.dll? In the same folder as the CVI Executable, or in <TestStand>\Components\NI\Models\TestStandModels?

I have just purchased a new iMac and cannot import my mail messages. It is hanging on 920 of 14000 each time. Does anyone know how to overcome this problem? • IOS 8 messages app hangs at random

It's a new iPhone 6, pre-installed with the latest and greatest iOS. The messages app appears to crash or hang at random, and I have to use the "double-click the home button, kill the app" approach to get it working again.
Anything specific I can check for?

Try a reset. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. If that does not correct the issue, after killing the app as you refer to it, then create a backup of your device and restore from the backup. If that doesn't do it, then restore as new, not from a backup.

  • How do I route an extension to a recorded message, then hang up?

Here's an easy one for somebody...
I rec'd a request to setup an extension that calls can be transferred to internally that does the following:
The caller will hear a prerecorded product information message. then the system should hang up.
There's no requirement for a voicemail box or a physical phone.
Would anyone be able to provide detailed instructions or refer me to a website that has the procedure?
Thanks in advance for the help...    BTW, we're running Unified Call Mgr version 6.1.2.1113-2

    Hi -
If you have Unity or Unity Connection it is really easy.  Assuming you have one or the other:
    1.  In CUCM on the directory number config forward all calls to voicemail.  Include the voicemail profile on the DN config.
    2.  Create a call handler with the same extension as the extension number that is forwarding to voicemail.
    3.  Set the schedule to All Hours.
    4.  Record a greeting you want callers to hear.
    5.  Set the After Message action to Hang Up.  The default is to take a message.
    6.  Test and you should be OK.
    Hope this helps!  Ginger

  • Why does file picker unexpectadly closed by Windows message keep hanging Firefox 4 when trying to browse destination folder for download?

Whenever I try to download a file, Firefox 4 asks me to choose a destination folder, then when I browse and choose the folder for the download, Firefox just hangs, and I get the file picker unexpectedly closed by Windows message. I end up having to use task manager to close Firefox.

The post I was responding to said,
"Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps. "
Somehow, I think that means Windows...
I've tried Firefox in Safe Mode - it makes no difference.
